Review: Following on from the excellent "Scene In Mirage" reissue that broke O Yuki Conjugate to a whole new crowd, Emotional Rescue return to the archives of the over-looked Nottingham "dirty ambient" outfit. Their second LP "Into Dark Water", originally released in 1987, is just as powerful as the first - a hypnagogic journey fuelled by a global stew of sound, feeding into elegant, evocative pieces. Fans of classic Jon Hassell will find much to enjoy here, but equally those appreciating the exotic post punk undercurrents of 23 Skidoo et al will easily find themselves drawn to the likes of "Ba-makala". Stunning, borderless musings from a hidden treasure of the UK's post-industrial heritage.

  3. Diyi Mayo (live Jam extended mix) (9:32)
  4. Afrofunkjazz (extended demo mix) (8:31)
Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's latest round of spiritual and percussive dancefloor workouts were apparently "randomly selected" from the vaults of DJ tools and work-in-progress tracks tucked away under the floorboards at Sacred Rhythm HQ. Naturally there's nothing genuinely "half-finished" here, just a quartet of cuts worthy of your attention. He begins with "Elegua", a West African style workout that boasts call-and-response group vocals and a loose, languid tribal rhythm track, before moving towards heavy Afro-house territory via the deep, dark analogue bass, machine beats and densely layered percussion of "Makussa PT Three". Over on side B, "Di Mayo" layers sharp, spacey synths and lashings of special effects to a dubbed-out Afro-house rhythm, while the gloriously colourful "Afrofunkjazz" lives up to its title.

Review: When we first reviewed "Girl & Robot With Flowers" back in 2012, eight-piece combo The Greg Foat Group was still a relatively unknown quantity. Since then, they've gone from success to success, releasing a string of inspired albums. Even so, "Girl & Robot With Flowers" remains one of their most stunning sets, as this re-press proves. It boasts quietly beautiful moments inspired by classic film soundtracks ("Girl & Robot With Flowers Part 3"), straight-up late night jazz movements ("For Breath A Tarry", "Cast Adrift"), and breezy, vibraphone-heavy '60s grooves ("The Girl & Robot With Flowers Part 5"). Throughout, it's beautifully played and lovingly produced, with Foat's impeccable piano playing taking centre stage.

  1. Baby (4:05)
  2. Tonight (3:53)
Review: If you're stuck for a Valentine's day gift for the vinyl lover in your life, you might want to take a look at this limited, heart-shaped pressing of Donnie and Joe Emerson's cult 1979 cut "Baby", which has successfully been covered in recent years by Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland, and more surprisingly Ariel Pink and Damn Funk. Here it resides on the A-side, where the lovelorn brothers cut a heavy-hearted path through lo-fi blue-eyed soul pastures. B-side "Tonight" is a previously unreleased gem recorded during the same period. It, too, is emotion-rich and lo-fi in construction, with the pair adding their sublime vocals to a backing track rich in steel guitar solos, chunky bass and flanged guitar chords.

Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: February 2020 marks the tenth anniversary of the release of Gil Scott-Heron's final studio album "I'm New Here", a set that was later brilliantly reworked by Jamie XX in 2011 ("We're New Here"). To celebrate the album's tenth birthday, XL Recordings has decided to offer up "We're New Again", a fresh "reinterpretation" of the Richard Russell produced set by contemporary jazz hero and beat-maker Maya McCraven. His vision is loose, languid, deep and jazzy, with languid jazz drumming, tight hip-hop beats, soft-touch instrumentation, liquid jazz solos and funk-fuelled basslines combining beneath Scott-Heron's gravelly spoken word vocals. It's an inspired re-invention all told and one fully in keeping with the essence of Scott-Heron's own work. In other words, it's a must-have.

Review: 10 years after first starting out, June aka Tsampikos Fronas serves up a third full length on Mannequin Records that draws on all his years of musical exploration. The world that results is a dystopian one where machines have taken over and human life has long gone. Synths fizz with static electricity, drums and percussion automated by AI and the whole thing is like an exercise in cyber-transcendence. An arsenal of vintage analog synthesizers, drum machines and effect processors add retro-future textures that only serve to heighten the record overall.

Review: Following dope authenticity from the likes of Benny Ill and El-B, rising South London label GD4YA unleash another sublime session. This time courtesy of the anonymous SW2 (possibly an alias), the vibes are set just a few months ahead in sunnier climes as each sweet two-step groove shimmers with a sun-kissed jazziness. "New Park Bruk" struts like it's peaktime CoOp era at Plastic People, "3am" shuffles and pushes with a Detroit-like insistency while "All 4 You" (and its crucial El-B remix) will leave you swooning. Think Sun Ship, think Zed Bias, think bliss. Let the good times roll...

Review: While most editions of the "Many Faces Of" compilation series will be of little interest to electronic music fans, this volume should be essential listening to anyone with even a passing interest. It focuses on legendary synth-pop sorts Depeche Mode and gathers together tracks from spin-off bands, collaborations, little-known remixes by band members past and present and cover versions of their best work by other acts. While highlights come thick and fast throughout, our current favourites include Martin Gore's moody electroclash remix of Senor Coconut's "Smooth Operator", Vince Clarke's cheeky Italo-disco collaboration with West India Company (a cover of "Ave Maria"), Nouvelle Vague's cheery cover of "Master & Servant" (in which Martin Gore provides backing vocals) and Enrico Cacace's wonderful instrumental tribute to "Policy Of Truth".

Review: Emotional Rescue stride into the new year with a sumptuous reissue of a seriously high-grade project from the early '80s. Man Jumping took shape as an attempt to bridge the gap between rock, pop and funk and the minimal "systems music" of Steve Reich, Terry Riley et al. The result is a feast for the ears - all the pomp and splendour of the finest '80s MIDI-powered production interwoven with serious artistic chops, but sequenced and arranged with an almost avant-garde sensibility. It's a wonderfully wild, academic but refreshingly unpretentious thrill ride that slots in perfectly with Emotional Rescue's remit.

Review: The latest effort from British post punks Wire sets the record straight. And then re-emphasise the point. Having been the first word in the genre for five decades now (credited with its invention in 1976), 'Mind Hive' confirms that longevity hasn't killed creativity.

It certainly sounds like the band in question, but they are still looking for new reference points to further immerse us in their aural world. By that we're talking elements of dream pop, surrealist ambience, metal and psychedelia, resulting in an album that cuts through the noise and grabs you by the earlobes. Opening on the ferocious 'Be Like Them', only to close on the hugely atmospheric and, at times, meditative 'Humming', it's destined to satisfy long term followers while enlisting a new generation of fans.

Review: Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's hard hitting sophomore album Bandana has proven a real hit over the last five months. Now though, many fans get what they have been waiting for; an instrumental version that pairs things back to the essential beats. It makes for a record that covers plenty of grind - from sunny day and feel good instrumentals to much rawer, harder hitting beast that arm with attitude even without the explicit vocal deliveries. Plenty of the soulful samples remain in situ to help colour things and make this such a characterful record.

Review: Sign Libra's 2016 debut album was something of a slow-burn hit, with the quality and popularity of the initially digital-only album - a fine voyage through ambient and new age pastures - eventually leading to a vinyl release on Antinote. For the belated follow-up, the producer has transferred to RVNG INTL and delivered a concept album inspired by the moon, its various dry "seas" (check the track titles) and its relationship with earth. Musically it's a little jauntier and upbeat that you might expect, with 1980s style new age synthesizer sounds being used to create melodies that dance across soundscapes rich in echoing machine drums, choral vocals and dreamy, echo-laden chords. It's a formula that makes for enjoyable and highly entertaining listening.

Review: While once a prolific producer of melodious, far-sighted techno futurism rooted in the sci-fi sounds of Detroit, Aril Brikha has been all but silent in recent years. There have been occasional singles and collaborations of course, but nothing significant. "Dance of a Trillion Stars", his first album release for 13 years, is therefore a significant release. Given the title and his previous work, you'll not be surprised to hear that it's every bit as starry and intergalactic in tone as you'd expect, with the Swedish producer ambling through a fine mixture of gentle ambient soundscapes, melodious minimalist epics, Tangerine Dream style synthesizer workouts and blissfully colourful electronic compositions. There's little aimed at the dancefloor, but it's arguably better for it: this is Brikha at his most emotive and alluring.

Review: If you're not up for words like "lovely", "blissful" and "gliding" on record then this one may not be for you. Then again, we'd sooner recommend trying it on for size than skipping past outright, as Tennis prove themselves to be every bit as compelling and captivating as they are seemingly sitting - or more accurately lackadaisically couching out - on some fluffy cloud overhead.

It's perhaps unsurprising that Tennis is married couple Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, who wrote the nine-tracker while doing what some couples fantasise about, and others think of with fear as to whether it would wind up with one of them killing the other. Four months is a long time to be at sea with your partner, but in this instance it seems to have only united them. Balladry but of particularly exceptional quality, it's hard not to feel jealous at the ties that clearly bind this wife-husband duo.

Jazz
  1. Treta-Yuga (20:22)
  2. Kali-Yuga (17:19)
Review: Arguably slightly overlooked on its 2016 digital download release, the debut album from New York improvisers Amirtha Kidambi and the Elder Ones is undoubtedly one of the most inspired debuts of recent years. It's great to see Jazzman pick it up for a vinyl release, because its unique combination of influences - Indian and South Asian music, spiritual jazz, avant-jazz, modal jazz and freestyle improvisation - makes it one of the most remarkable jazz releases of recent years. There's something particularly arresting about epic A-side "Treta-Yuga", where squally, high-octane horn solos ride a metronomic, seemingly never-ending bass loop and wild drums, though it's the spaced out flipside composition - all droning Indian tones, echo-laden vocals and off-kilter drums - that makes the greater impression.

Review: When asked to cite examples of musicians that inspired the sound of his second album for Stones Throw, "Spiritual Sleaze", Rejoicer provided a list that included such disparate talents as Sun Ra, Aphex Twin, Eric Satie, Wu-Tang Clan, Ebo Taylor, Scientist and Steve Reich. It's perhaps unsurprising then that the collection of softly spun songs and off-kilter instrumentals that makes up the album is exceedingly hard to accurately describe. What's perhaps more surprising, though, is that it does have a genuinely coherent, languid, soft-focus sound that in many ways belies its multitude of contrasting influences. Don't just take our word for it, though - give it a listen and judge for yourself. Your ears will be amply rewarded.

Review: Katie Gately's second album "Loom" is a very different beast to its predecessor, 2016 debut full-length "Color". Deeply personal and recorded during her mother's ultimately unsuccessful battle against a rare form of cancer, it sees Gately reflect on grief and loss in a surprisingly confident and musically alluring manner. The assembled tracks make extensive use of both densely layered vocal textures and her own distinctive lead vocals, elements which she mixed with ear-catching melodies, woozy electronics and beats that were crafted in part from recordings she made of Californian earthquakes. You'd expect it to be tonally dark given the subject matter, but it's actually far more bold, beguiling and melodic, drawing just as much influence from more pastoral styles of music as Gately's usual experimental electronics and intricate sound design.

Review: On their hotly anticipated debut album, Passive Refraction invites us up to the "27th Floor" of an imaginary hotel in the heart of Tokyo, a place where you can gaze in wonder at the neon-lit cityscape. Musically, it's an immersive experience, where dreamy, slowly unfurling ambient chords and vivid synthesizer sounds reminiscent of Vangelis' "Blade Runner" soundtrack intertwine with sampled voices, hazy aural textures and quietly loved-up melodies. It's the kind of album that you can imagine being classed as a 21st century ambient classic 20 or 30 years from now, which we think you'll agree is high praise indeed.
