Review: There's no denying the quality (or quantity, for that matter) of Tim Reaper's mid-90s style jungle workouts. His bounding, floor-friendly cuts have been everywhere in 2018, or at least a dizzying array of retro-futurist record labels. Here he provides more quality dancefloor ammunition, with four fine cuts stretched across a dubplate style ten-inch double-pack. Highlights include the intoxicating skank of "The General", where hazy toaster vocal samples and jumpy reggae riffs ride heavy dub bass and skittish jungle beats, the all-out sub-bass assault of "The Walls of Jericho" (another dub-powered peak-time blinder) and the slowly building jungle dub madness of closing cut "Jarreau Dub", which includes some seriously snare-heavy drums.

Review: Oceanvs Orientalis and Ilhan Ersahin first entered each other's orbits by chance at a performance at Turkey's Cappadox Festival in 2018. Orientalis is renowned for his fusion of Eastern musical motifs and traditions with cutting-edge electronica, while Ilhan Ersahin has long plowed a unique path uniting assorted musical strains from around the world via an exploratory jazz-improv sensibility. Following two tracks ('Mesta' and 'Pire') co-written by Ilhan and OvO and released as collaborations, as well as two more Ersahin / OvO co-writes ('Revenge Of The Wankers' and 'Television') released under OvO's name alone, a fresh and exciting new song, '1980', now heralds a full-length collaboration slated to land in Spring 2024. The track's title hints at a certain nostalgic bent, all while still keeping its gaze firmly fixed on the future as it evokes sun-drenched, bygone good times. The 10" edition adds several extra versions, one of which spotlights the multi-instrumental mastery of Darkside's Dave Harrington, and the other the mesmerizing vocal stylings of Gaye Su Akyol.

Review: For a project that has taken thirty years it would be totally inadequate to call the formation of Hypocritical Beatdown a lockdown-project. There's a deep history and psychology in these records by Violators Of The English Language and their spin-off groups Magnets (Rap Group) and ProVerbs, that combines stage-fright, loss, pride, creative-schizophrenia, racial inequality, surrealism, personal politics, brotherhood, artistic-constipation, better judgment, love, anti-love, soul searching and much more.
The one remaining untapped energy source here is perhaps FEAR, refreshing when used correctly, but never imposter syndrome. As maligned and mutated as this British Hip-Hop might appear to be, it could not be more pure. Each member of all of the Hypocritical Beatdown crew were committed to this cause as soon as the doors opened. They rapped on stages before they had even tasted beer or lost their virginity and the curse had already taken hold in the years when these youngsters still had to be back home before dark and it has never left their bloodstreams.
That's why this record NEEDED to be made. Completed, recorded, exorcised, committed to vinyl, rotated and liberated. Not unlike the VHS tape in a well known Japanese horror film, every listened copy, complete with its broken beats, old-school sensibilities and Marmite Mancunian accents, adds to the mystic circle... breaks the dream... some people might even like it. If you were given a chance to go back and meet your teenage self, wouldn't you?

Review: Iconic hardcore / jungle imprint Suburban Base return to the vaults once again for the latest edition of their Sub Plates series. Once again, it's all previously unreleased business but there's a twist... One of these tracks is actually brand new as Marvellous Cain links up with new producer Sound Shifter for the Good Looking-esque 'Light Source One'. Elsewhere we have Cool Hand Flex's signature choppage and funk on 'Get Down' (a tune which only he, Randall and Hype ever had on dub), we've got more excellent choppage on a very rare DJ Phantasy remix of Sophisticated Bad Boyz 'Feel The Magic' before Dead Dred's Asend digs out the badboy fire of 'Intelone', a track he only ever played once on Kool FM way back in 96, never to see the light of day... Review: Made using field recordings captured by Archiver on a trip to Japan in 2015, i&i Musik 002 is a two track Jungle release with layered breaks, 808 basslines & chopped up samples. "Jinja" meaning shrine in Japanese, uses recordings taken in & around the sacred Koyasan temple complex in Japan. A deep 808 sub bass backbone & classic breaks have been added to complete the picture on this unique amen roller. On the flip side, "Echo Park" combines snippets from a walk around Shinjuku Gyoen park in Tokyo, with it's echoed announcements & footstep sounds, together with recordings taken from some of Wakayama's temples & shrines. Layered classic breaks & an 808 bassline complete this distinctive track. Written & produced by Archiver & mastered by Loz at Fat As Funk. Individually lathe cut by Archiver & released as a limited edition run of 55 hand stamped & hand numbered 10" dubplates. An exclusively vinyl only affair, with no digital release.
