Review: Poitiers isn't often regarded as a contemporary music hotspot, but its against the backdrop of that small French riverside city that Kognitif creates the unique but familiar beats on 'Soul Food'. Informed by trip hop, experimental hip hop, tripped out soul and downbeat lounge styles, it encapsulates the impending summer perfectly, providing the impending summer comes with sticky evenings and crimson sunsets. Tracks like 'Letter To My Last Love' wouldn't sound out of place on 'Since I Left You', the seminal debut album from The Avalanches. Brash, bold and confident brass leads the charge on big beat-leaning 'Yeah Yeah Yeah', which comes complete with huge soul vocals. Then you have sultry and smooth fare such as 'The Message', the full-sounding R&B pop of 'Whatever', and the closing Ibiza chill of 'Walking On Sunshine'. Fresh and cool as you like.

Review: If you're unfamiliar with the name Phillip Sollmann it's important to lay out the land first. This is the real name of Efdemin, one of techno's most respected and revered players who calls Berlin's much-feted Berghain and Panorama Bar home, and the moment you know this the omnipresent rhythms driving this distinctly not-really-dance-music nine-tracker forward make perfect sense. Tracks like 'Rara' will be a joy for more adventurous DJs but also work incredibly well as standalone listening pieces. Wooden percussion mimicking the kind of top ends we associate with bouncy but tough club stuff, sans kick drums and bass. 'Micro', which follows, applies the same principle to layers of chime. Elsewhere, things veer into twisted pseudo-rave - 'U/O''s lengthy refrains and drones create the impact of a 5AM breakdown in some strange otherworld, while 'Mono' closes it out on a huge, smile-inducing high.

Review: This collection of rare recordings were first recorded as part of the legendary Prescription label's 1990's album series. They led to the Astral Disaster album, which was recorded during Halloween 1998 at the studios belonging to Iron Maiden and was known for having been a debtors prison back in Victorian times, with plenty of spooky chains, iron doors and manacles still left laying around. However, there was plenty of material that never made the cut for whatever reason. They are now presented here on The Astral Disaster Sessions, with all previously unreleased versions and alternate mixes included.

Review: When it was first released by Scape in 2006, Jan Jelinek's "Tierbeobachtungen" album never appeared on vinyl, hence this limited-edition reissue from Faitiche. While all of Jelinek's albums are worth a listen, this remains one of his most pertinent, in part because it grew out of live shows in which the loop-jammer created slowly unfurling epics out of little more than odd samples, effects pedals and a very small number of "miniature synthesizers". Musically, it's not as percussive and beat-driven as some of his work, instead sitting somewhere between classic American minimalism, music concrete, unearthly ambient and the similarly drowsy, locked-in hypnotism of some of krautrock's more cosmic, synthesizer-wielding pioneers. There's beauty to be found from start to finish, but also creepiness by the shipload.

Review: Tokyo-based duo Group A have been operating as outliers for many years now, self-releasing music and earning a reputation for their incendiary live shows. After catching the ear of Alessandro Adriani's mighty Mannequin label, they released a self-titled EP on the Italian imprint back in 2017, and now they're finally back to follow it up with a full-length. Being on Mannequin you should know to expect beyond the grave sonics with heavy notes of industrial and minimal wave, but Group A intersperse this with their own particular strain of sonic personality, from dismembered voices to American TV rips (on the excellent "Channel Surfing". It's an imposing listen, not to mention a captivating one.

Review: Hospital Records has decided to close down Med School after 13 years, an imprint it used to offer up a mixture of more experimental fare and tracks from fast-rising artists. "Med School: Graduation" is the label's last hurrah - a triple-vinyl set with bonus 10" dubplate containing tons of previously unheard material from many of the artists who passed through the imprint over the years. It's a fittingly impressive and expansive finale, with highlights appearing at a rate of knots. We're particularly enjoying the slick jazziness of Bop's "Magic.gif", the dubstep-goes-tribal insanity of Royalston's insane (and insanely good) "Mark's Shibari Groove", the soundscape D&B shimmer of Etherwood's "Nowhere To Go But Everywhere" and the punishing peak-time brilliance of S.P.Y's "Black Flag VIP".

Review: When breakbeat hardcore and "darkcore" were slowly morphing into jungle around 1992-93, few artists delivered quite as many revolutionary and mind-mangling cuts as Northampton's Foul Play. For proof, check out this must-have retrospective of their earliest EPs on Hypercolour. From start to finish, it bustles with proto-jungle gems, from the mangled rave stabs and boisterous breaks of "Dubbing You" and the warehouse-ready voodoo of "The Alchemist" (a kind of prototype liquid tune which also pays tribute to Nightmares on Wax's earlier "Aftermath"), to the blistering rhythms and bassbin-bothering sub business of "Screwface" and the early ragga-jungle brilliance of "Ragatere". If you have any interest at all in the development of UK bass music, then you need this in your life.

Review: Established in the early 1980s by Toyama-based musician Tsuyoshi Kawabata, Pale Cocoon was Japan's short-lived answer to musical fusionists Woo, Penguin Cafe Orchestra and The Durutti Column. The outfit's sole album, 1984's cassette-only "Mayu", has long been considered a cult classic, hence this first ever vinyl edition. Musically, the album is magic, with Kawabata and his collaborators offering up unearthly, mind-massaging soundscapes and pastoral, slow-burn songs crafted from effects-laden guitar textures, haunting flutes, quietly colourful synthesiser motifs, drowsy vocal passages, field recordings, occasional drum machine rhythms and chiming, off-kilter percussion. Wisely they've stretched the 60-minute album across two slabs of wax, too, meaning that every oddball sonic detail and picturesque musical refrain comes through loud and clear. In a word: superb.

Review: World Standard is an alias of Suzuki Sohichiro, a prolific Japanese artist who started releasing albums in the eighties and continues to this day. His fusions of folk, world, pop, county and experimental ambient have defined his homeland's sound output and latest effort Asagao continues with that trend. Across two sides of vinyl he bewitches and beguiles with his widescreen sonic visions, deft oriental melodies and lullaby like sounds. This is one to put on, drift into and forget your worries.

Review: Although he's released tons of albums and singles, it's Calibre's long running "Shelflife" series that tends to get fans going the most. That's mainly because each volume contains sought-after cuts from his personal stash of productions that feature only in his DJ sets. As you'd expect, there's tons of brilliant fare to be found on volume six, which drops two years after its sold-out predecessor landed in stores. Our current favourites include the deep, warm and soulful roller "Years", the serious sub-bass pressure of the more skittish "Guide You Through", the futurist, mind-altering bass and hazy vocal samples of "Troible" and the dub-influenced weightiness of bustling deep D&B gem "Puppet". That said, all eight tracks are of the highest quality (as you'd expect given Calibre's record and reputation).

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

As this expansive reissue proves, Max Richter's 2004 album The Blue Notebooks remains one of the greatest neo-classical works of recent decades. The album was famously inspired by the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and featured narration from actress Tilda Swinton. Such was the record's impact, in fact, that numerous pieces subsequently appeared on a variety of high profile movie soundtracks. To celebrate the work's 15th birthday, Richter has bundled the album with a second disc of largely unheard material. This includes a couple of intriguing remixes by Jlin and Konx-Om-Pax, two archive tracks produced during the album sessions, and a handful of new recordings of key instrumentals. These are all excellent, of course, but still pale in comparison to the inspired original album.

Review: Kevin Palmer (Best Available Technology) and Gary James Geiler (Ovis Aurum) have been friends for 20 years, though it took until 2015 for the pair to make and release music together. Here they reunite for their first collaborative full length as BOA, a deliciously experimental, off-kilter affair in which classic and contemporary avant-garde sounds and techniques combine to create tracks that are truly magical and otherworldly. Some will hear elements of sound collage, Flying Lotus style glitch-hop, the industrial fuzz of Cabaret Voltaire and the post-punk dub of Adrian Sherwood, while others may notice nods towards weirdo ambient, drone, IDM and lo-fi noise productions. All of these things and more are in the melting pot, and the results are every bit as exciting and alluring as you'd expect.

Review: Brigitte Barbu sounds like French cinematic icon Brigitte Bardot, but it's actually the alias of Pepe Bradock. The same Pepe Bradock whose 'Deep Burnt' was one of the quintessential deep house tracks of the late-1990s, the guy who's subsequently been on a quest to explore any and all experimental definitions of 'dance' and 'electronic music', and the chap who promised us an abstract hip hop album following last year's sonic collage, 'What A Mess'. If you're looking for sophisticated club beats, alternative tracks for block parties, or any beats at all you're likely to come away disappointed, though. If, on the other hand, you want a vanguard producer to all-but throw away the rulebook with a collection of strange, otherworldly arrangements that involve a guitar mimicking machines and computers, then this is the place to be. To borrow from another French classic, the sounds of tomorrow, music of today.

Review: Steven Stapleton has made countless albums as Nurse With Wound, though few are quite as celebrated as 1988's "Soliloquy For Lilith". As this latest reissue of the lauded set proves, the epic album has lost none of its original allure or lustre. This edition expands on the original version, which contained six lengthy untitled ambient and drone compositions of breathless brilliance, by including two further pieces recorded during the same sessions (tracks seven and eight). Like the other meandering soundscapes, they're dark, avant-garde, intoxicating and exceptionally immersive. In truth, the album is a must-have for all of those who enjoy the more cosmic and atmospheric end of the ambient spectrum.

Review: More posthumous works by legendary UK electronics duo Coil. These rare recordings were recorded as part of the legendary Prescription label album series in the late '90s, which resulted in the album 'Astral Disaster'. For various reasons, some of the unissued material and mixes released on this album were omitted from the original. It includes a rare version of "I Don't Want To Be The One" that was only included on a 1999 promo only sampler CD, plus the 14 minute track "Cosmic Disaster" that was the original working title of the album. Remastered from the original tapes by by Denis Blackham.

Review: Thanks to Massive Attack's recent anniversary reissue of their touchstone "Mezzanine" album, trip-hop is back in the headlines. While we don't expect a full-blown revival just yet, it's always worth dipping into the style and its hazy, dub-flecked and sample-heavy sound. This triple-disc genre retrospective from Wagram should be an essential listen for both confirmed trip-hop heads and newcomers alike. It contains plenty of well-known classics - see the contributions from I Monster, Tricky, Smith & Mighty, Kid Loco, Moby, Boards of Canada, Kruder and Doefmeister, Tosca and Nightmares on Wax, for starters - as well as under-appreciated underground hits and lesser-celebrated selections (Sabres of Paradise's remix of Red Snapper's "Hotflush" being the undoubted highlight).
