Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated releases of 2020, legendary UK producer DJ Krust makes a comeback with his first release in 14 years, and rather surprisingly on Crosstown Rebels - of all labels. While we all know Damian Lazarus' established imprint is anything but drum and bass, it is well known that he was an early champion of the sound, long before his tenure at City Rockers in the early '00s when he embraced 'electroclash' - but that's another story. It's clear that Krust created some of the most seminal records in the genre throughout the nineties and noughties, and he is back in fine form on The Edge Of Everything, having explored radical new philosophies and creative processes. Minimalist arrangements as heard on tracks like 'Constructive Ambiguity' hark back to his signature sound of the aforementioned period, while he also explores more experimental minded beats as heard on 'Antigravity Love' and proper darkside rolling drama exemplified on 'Deep Fields Of Liars'.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

2020 marks the 30th birthday of Network Records, a label that did arguably more than any other in the early 90s to champion both US and UK techno. As part of their celebrations they'll be reissuing some key singles and albums from their catalogue, starting with this 1991 compilation of key Derrick May productions. Now stretched across two slabs of wax rather than one to guarantee a louder cut, "Innovator" contains a wealth of vital early Motor City techno classics, from the acid-powered insanity of "Nude Photo" and the rushing, piano-heavy rush of "Strings of Life", to the thrilling sci-fi futurism of "Wiggin" and the deep techno warmth of "Hand Over Hand".

Review: Taking off where his debut Sojo Soul album Futureland left us, Steve Perrett returns with another emotional and cinematic experience; The Nebulous Concept. Igniting the fire with the mellow washes of downbeat-flavoured work out 'Out In The Big', we're then hurled into a wonderland of beats that flex around the drum & bass axis. Ranging from full-on space aged disco ('You Are Beautiful', 'Open Spaces' to slower tempo and heavily ambient inspired pieces ('Platform') it's another album that tickles both the dancefloor and the home-listener. Fans of Kimyan Law or Kruder & Dorfmeisters brief but heavily acclaimed foray into drum & bass will be all over this.

This time out it takes on a Worldwide Sound suffix following releases on labels like Future Times, Bokeh Versions and Berceuse Heroique. The crew enlist some fine collaborators on this one with Roger Robinson as Papa Robbie on 'Kill-A-Milli', plus Second Woman aka Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv and Belong's Turk Dietrich, as well as the late DJ Wundrkut and wzrdyAV. The tunes are blistering, make no mistake.

Review: Last year, Abdulla Rashim took time out to develop his alternative Lundin Oil project, delivering two EPs of in-your-face noise and industrial techno textures for Northern Electrics. Here, he switches back to his main creative name for a second Abdulla Rashim set that joins the dots between intense, beatless ambience and modular techno box jams. Despite the general bleakness of his sounds and method, A Shell of Speed is surprisingly picturesque and melodious in parts, with the brilliant "Crossing Qalandiya" delivering the kind of trippy, delay-laden electronic soundscapes that recall the halcyon days of IDM and ambient. Even so, it's his more surging, rhythmically intense compositions - see "Red Pool" and "Ador Tracers" - that arguably stand out.

Review: Given the frequent appearance of new 12" singles from The Exaltics - the most familiar pseudonym of German electro/techno/experimental veteran Robert Witschakowski - it's a surprise to find that The Girl & The Chameleon is his first full-length for two years. Largely dark, intense, creepy and floor-friendly, it offers a range of thumping acid techno and electro workouts, interspersed with occasional ambient interludes and musical curveballs. It's arguably these surprise additions, rather than those dancefloor cuts in his tried-and-tested formula, which bring the album alive. Check, for example, the raw 303 lines, bold bleeps and breakbeats of the early Meat Beat Manifesto style madness of "The Chase", and the drowsy, pitched-down intelligent techno revivalism of "No Way Back"; both are superb.

Review: Eight slabs of chunky German dub techno coming up. After debuting on Delsin last year with the three-track Vortekz 12", Vril's second record away from the Giegling camp, the Dutch label have secured a prize release from the reserved German artist in his second album. It's a more club orientated listen compared to last year's Torus LP which suits the Delsin aesthetic just fine, and for techno bombs DJs will launch into clubs this year check out "Portal 6" and "Portal 7". For a cut in line with the vibes heard on his work for Staub see "Portal 1", while for something deeper and a little housier go to "Portal 3".

Review: Perennial East German oddball outpost Freude Am Tanzen can always be counted on to inject some colour and imagination into the house and techno world, and so it is on this new compilation. Metaboman in particular impresses alongside Large M with the uptempo, swinging freak-fest "G&B", while Monkey Maffia manages to come over both big room and loungey in equal measure on "Gladis". Mathias Kaden brings his more focused club style to bear on "Freakinme", and Douglas Greed works some coldwave synth touches into a playful romp entitled "Springtime In December". Whichever side you reach for, the ideas come on fresh and invigorating which is all too valuable these days.

Review: Future Fusion is the killer debut set from Streetwalker, the collaborative project of White Car's Elon Katz and Beau Wanzer of Mutant Beat Dance/L.I.E.S. fame. The DIY ethos of primitive Chicago house seeps into the pair's work as Streetwalker, with the material that forms Future Fusion recorded live in one take. This was subsequently recorded without any overdubs or MIDI to one inch tape, with the resultant six tracks resonating with a loose, primal energy. Sitting uneasily between house, industrial, synth-pop and EBM, Future Fusion is one of those records that you simply cannot second guess. This being a Cititrax release, the presentation is second to none too, with some superb illustration work from the well respected graphic artists Spencer Longo, but in truth the music should be the real focus of attention here.

Review: Circle Of Live is a collaborative electronic project led by the Swedish techno artist Sebastian Mullaert. It aims to reevaluate the structures of performance, linking artists and their machines for improvised jams. It debuted at Baskerville Hall as part of Wales based Freerotation festival, featuring a revolving cast of musicians, who in this incarnation included such big names as Mathew Jonson, Dorisburg and Johanna Knutsson, alongside festival and label co-founder Steevio. With artists like this linking up, you can just imagine what kind of magic they'd possibly conjure up and we can assure you it's absolutely sublime. These five excerpts from the live performance capture some of their most dynamic and spellbinding moments.

Review: Publicity-shy Japanese producer Ground first came to our attention earlier in the year thanks to the kosmiche-goes-deep techno hypnotism of debut single "Logos". Here, the Osaka-raised artist unveils a debut album that expands on that thrilling first missive, variously joining the dots between melodious, off-kilter lo-fi techno, attractive experimental deep house, hard-to-pigeonhole high-tempo ethno-techno workouts (see the bonkers but brilliant "Hanasai"), low-slung dancefloor weirdness ('Feel It", the insane jazz cut-up "Koot Works") and drowsy, sunrise-friendly brilliance (album highlight "Sunizm"). It's a curious set, all told, but one that wholeheartedly impresses from start to finish, with Ground supplying enough curious touches and aural textures to suggest that repeat listening is essential.

Review: Cititrax present the sinewy synthwave sound of Tornische, a project first showcased on label boss Veronica Vasicka's Resident Advisor mix from earlier this year. We don't know much about them, but neither does it matter when the music is this good. The reference points are clear, but Tornische don't sound bogged down by nostalgia. Their tracks bristle with energy, and the interplay between the vocalists is theatric and ineffably cool in the same breath. Meanwhile the productions are deceptively nuanced even as they stalk in the raw alleyways first traipsed by plucky '80s bedroom studio dreamers.

Review: On this expansive release, Zak "DVS1" Khutoretsky is not messing around. Over the course of two 12" records and a 10", the Minneapolis-raised producer delivers no less than eight late night techno workouts. With such a plethora of fine cuts to choose from, picking highlights is tricky. We're particularly enjoying the chiming, early morning roller that is "Decreasing", the Hoover bass-propelled madness of "Watchtower" and the bounding, rave-influenced stomp of "Coding", though the acid-fired wildness of "Rise" is also impressive. Arguably best of all, though, is "It's All About", an atmospheric, stripped-back techno shuffler full of delay-laden vocal samples and repetitive, dubbed-out electronic riffs.
