Review: With their spiralling synth melodies, bombastic rhythms and attractive pop hooks, Austrian duo Camo and Krooked are fast becoming one of drum & bass's biggest attractions. Their sound - bold, attractive, brash and shot through with electronic funk - is a perfect fit with Hospital Records' current fascination with festival-friendly drum and bass. This fourth album for Tony Colman's veteran imprint delivers more smile-inducing thrills, offering the kind of fare that should find wider appeal outside the D&B scene. Unashamedly dancefloor-focused, Zeitgeist oozes positivity, from the tropical jungle of "Aurrora" and darkside pomp of "Ruhepuls", to the cut-up white-knuckle ride that is "Vice".

Review: Matt Stephenson and Sean Kelly's wildly imaginative Machine Girl project should need no introductions, but we'll assume ignorance and cut to the chase anyway. "Fucked-up electronic punk" was the term used by Stephenson in an interview with Revolver magazine, a rather admirable attempt to explain what was happening under the guise he created as a soloist in 2012, before drafting a partner for live percussion three years later.
WLFGRL landed just a year before that embryonic expansion, and in many ways feels much more like a 'dance music' record than what would follow. Tracks hit the nose on the head in terms of where club sounds were heading in just a few years after this arrived, essentially post-genre fusions of sound that owe as much to rave's formative years as they predict the beautifully chaotic and impossible to pigeonhole noises of today.

Review: The Northern Front UK has very slowly but very surely built up a reputation for serious drum & bass sounds. It started two years ago and only now is serving up its fourth EP, but it has been worth the wait and then some. Label mainstays Response and Pliskin are responsible for the nine track double album and waste no time in getting you locked in with the opener's dark and heavy breaks. The rest of the tunes roam through shimmering and high octane rhythms, cosmic synth explorations and icy, stripped back and skeletal steppers. It makes for quite the ride.

Review: Well, here it is, the collab album we've all been waiting for. Drum & bass brothers Nu:Tone and Logistics hit Hospital Records hard with an LP the scene has been crying out for since their first work together a decade ago. A killer combination of Logistic's pure breaks and Nu:Tone's ear for soulful samples, there was little doubt that this album was going to be a huge release for the label, and for Matt and Dan too. Opening with the beautiful haze of lead single "Morning Light", the release heads down different courses to reach various points in the D&B spectrum. The sunshine in "Brown Shoes" is hard to ignore, and interludes like "Escape Pod" are sci-fi journeys into the unknown, an interlude to cast the hard-hitting drama of their follow-up tracks into sharp focus. This is an album as we know and miss them - a piece of work intended to be listened to in one greedy sitting. So find a quiet corner and put those cans on.

Review: Chase & Status ride a new wave with their sixth album, honouring their long-held time in the limelight as two of the UK's most powerful bangercrafting hitmakers. While still managing to nod to times past, this limited new LP also works in brand new UK sounds - drill MCs Unknown T and Backroad Gee, for example, make standout appearance on the tracks 'Run Up' and 'When It Rains', while still retaining elements of creativity that are endemic to Chase & Status only. Meanwhile, UK dancehall maintains its strong standing, with Popcaan and IRAH featuring regularly throughout.

Review: Drum & bass innovator DBridge has rarely done wrong in his long career. His last album was a perfect reflection of the times - dark and paranoid - and now he continues in that vein with a new collection of tunes on his latest album Weak Or No Signal. He draws on his 15 years of experience to pul together a range of rhythms from taught and tense like 'Dark Plains' to minimal rollers like 'HMT13' via gurgling, depraved, moody sluggers like 'Things Change.' Is as diverse a drum & bass album as you will get while also remaining true to his own unique style.

Peppered with big vocal appearances including Bobby Womack, Ella Eyre, Dizzee Rascal and Ed Sheeran, the album ranges from their signature shiny drum & bass to soulful house ("Go Far"), rare groove style funk ("Common Emotion") and all shades in between from sultry and smoochy to out-and-out festival unifiers.

Review: Bristol-based basssmith Binga comes correct with his debut long one: a tightly-stitched suite of beats, flavours, cultures and vocalists, it's an immense listen whether you come at this from a jungle perspective, a beats point of view or a straight-up D&B angle: from iced-out instrumental rollers such as "Dark Day" and the chubby-bass ridden "I Tol U" to twisted future dancehall like the title track "Wasted Days" and trippy turbo grime "Badman Skin". Complete with an all-star cast of mic caressers - TT The Artist, Rider Shafique, Warrior Queen and Binga's long-term compadre Redders - this is a heavyweight document that really showcases both Binga's capabilities and the creative potential of future genre smelting. Don't waste any more time.

Review: Wardown, the emotive and experimental project from Technimatic's Pete Rogers, releases its second LP on Blu Mar Ten Music. Where the debut Wardown album was a diary of smeared memory, musically recounting the author's childhood home and his subsequent feelings of dislocation from it, Wardown II expands on the themes of nostalgia and focuses on our collective reactions to a promised future that remains undelivered. Using aural scraps from that most optimistically futurist period, the 1950s & 1960s, Wardown weaves them into an uneasily dreamy, bittersweet commentary on postmodern nostalgia.

Review: Felix K's Hidden Hawaii comes correct with this immaculate sophomore volume. Delivered on beautiful hand-stamped green vinyl, it plunges deep into the furthest realms of drum & bass. From the precision fracturisms from Felix and Es Tereo's "Spartan" to Dave O's classical jungle homage "The Love Of Jah" via the infectiously funky clicks and whirrs of Muted's "Empty Valley", no sonic stone is left unturned as the Hidden Hawaii crew bombard you with their bass-bitten experiments. Review: Old school jungle lovers rejoice because this is some seriously meaty stuff from AKO Beatz. Vintage: Lost Jams From 92-95 is a collection of VIPs, unreleased tunes and a special remix from Tom and Jerry. Presented with the original vinyl artwork on black wax this is a real history lesson that any drum & bass fan needs in their life. Opener 'Nine & Fifty' is a flurry of drums and ping sub bass to get things going in fine style and from there things never let up. That said, next to the floor-facing rollers, there is also a couple of atmospheric interludes that give you room to breathe.

Review: Vemodalen means 'The fear that everything has already been done.' If that's not an enticing enough invitation to dBridge's album then we don't know what is. The music as relatable, too. Powerful, slow, sexy and vulnerable, it paints from a synthetic palette anyone over 30 has grown up with and will know intuitively from music and movies. Ranging from poppy motifs that are reminiscent perhaps of Roxy Music or Visage to more introverted electronica that nods at the Rephlex sound and perhaps Si Begg, all backed up by his history as Heartdrive and the Autonomic sound, this is dBridge looking back to look forward. Stunning.

Review: Two years after dgoHn delivered his second studio album, Undesignated Proximate - a gloriously far-sighted fusion of drum & bass, IDM and experimental electronica - that set has been given the remix treatment. As you'd expect, it's a more versatile and eclectic affair, albeit one that keeps the hazy, outer-space ethos of the original set. It naturally boasts a wealth of fine alternative versions and re-imaginings, from the reverb-heavy, dubbed-out brilliance of Meat Beat Manifesto's take on 'Daisy Takes Two' and Wisp's sparkling, piano-laden D&B re-wire of 'Electryon', to Scrasse's insanely weighty tech-step revision of 'Conty', Djrum's jazz-wise jungle spin of 'Ninnyhammer' and Skee Mask's grandiose, IDM-goes-jungle version of 'Robin's Windmill'.

Review: The third heavyweight 12" to be purloined from Dispatch's elephantine Transit 2 album, here we find Halogenix rejuvenating 2012's slinky roller "Raya" with a massive VIP. With added bass textures and serious attention paid to the drums, it's essentially a whole new tune. EBK's "Strength" is equally stunning; all jittery and breakneck, the frenetic rhythm is countered neatly with an innocent glock riff that's at once naive and naughty. Incredibly powerful stuff.

He's now up to his sixth studio album and it finds his airy, rolling, sweet flowing beats all present and correct. "Tomodachi Sessions" derived from a series of collaborations with close friends who have all played a part in his 25 year career. A quarter of a century after it was first written it still has the same impact that it did back then. The man himself as gone on to become a genuine national treasure with appearances in Eastenders, conducting orchestras, making documentaries for Sky Arts and much more. But it will surely always this record that remains his greatest piece of work.

Review: There is no more iconic figure in the world of drum & bass than Goldie. In fact, he has pretty much transitioned to natural treasure in the years since he operated at the genre's bleeding edge as a DJ, label boss of Metalheadz and producer. His Timeless album, now a hard to believe quarter of a century old, was his big breakthrough and took d&b into new realms. The epic title track will always be the benchmark by which all others are judged by the whole flow the record, precision beat work and lush synth sounds have rarely been bettered.

Review: Shogun duo Technicolour and Komatic cut their third album to deluxe wax comprising two white 12"s and two coloured 10"s... And it sounds every bit as good as it looks. Soulful yet varied in its scope and range, it's the most confident and clearest LP the duo have given us so far as it ranges from the darker, gnarlier minimal twists of "True Believer" to the more signature flourishing orchestration of cuts like "Weightless (feat Lucy Kitchen)" and naked introspection such as "The Nightfall (feat Jono McCleery)". And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Potential drum & bass album of the year.

Review: Jim Coles' decision back in 2010 to implement a swerve in his sonic trajectory away from his hip-hop past as 2tall in favour of a more all-encompassing approach that touches on various strands of bass culture as Om Unit has paid off and then some. Subsequent releases on Exit, Autonomic, Civil Music, Metalheadz and his own Cosmic Bridge imprint have all shown Om Unit eminently capable of tempo shifting productions that appeal to fans of Bass music, Drum & Bass and footwork alike. The latter has been explored further while the Dream Continuum collaboration with Machinedrum on Planet Mu and his Philip D. All this and more is included on Threads, a debut Om Unit LP for Civil Music that deftly collates various strands (or threads) of his production career over the past fifteen years for a cohesive 15 track set that veers through of hip hop, dubstep, jungle and even house.

An ice cold web of tales and textures that digs deep into drum & bass music's most uncompromising and future-focused aesthetics, over 13 tracks they dig deep into a range of influences - techno ('Andromeda'), jungle ('Destro') and elements of grunge and trip hop on cuts such as 'Vermin' and 'After Dinner Coffee Face' are all in the mix but they forever keep the sonics tight and consistent. Metalheadz through and through.

Review: While Joker Records never achieved the cult status of early drum & bass labels such as RAM, Philly Blunt and Urban Takeover, the imprint nevertheless played a crucial role in the development of the style. Here, a clutch of productions from label founders The Dream Team gets a 21st century makeover. There's naturally plenty of tried-and-tested floor fillers present, from the bouncy jump-up stylings of Voltage, Malachi and Papa G's rework of "Sweetie", and the duo's own unreleased "96 version" of sweaty, bass-heavy roller "The God Father", to the bombastic jungle breaks, speedy ragga vocals and pulverizing bass of "Stamina (Bladerunner Remix)". Arguably best of all, though, is the throbbing jungle revivalism of Dj Westy's rework of "Lighter".

Review: Ras Demo relick! One of jungle's longest standing vocalists - whose discography dates back to seminal SOUR dispatches in 1994 - sees his album Frequency getting a reboot on this vinyl edition. Highlights include his rising vocal insistency on the steppy bubbler 'Jungle Buss Me', the powerful toe-to-toe lyrics of 'Protect The Life' with Sizzla Kalonji and the wobbled-out bass and soulful vocals of the final fire that is 'When You Ready'. Complete with a big remix from rave pioneer DJ Phantasy, the frequencies are high on this one!

Review: Astonishingly, a quarter of a century has now passed since The Prodigy released The Fat of the Land, the inspired rock-rave fusion opus that helped rocket the Essex combo towards superstardom and converted a whole generation of spotty indie kids to the joys of rambunctious rave music. It's certainly worthy of this limited-edition anniversary pressing, which comes on eye-catching silver-coloured vinyl. Of course, we all know the smash hits - the bustling, acid-flecked roll of 'Smack My Bitch Up', ultra-heavy 'Firestarter' and funky, low-slung 'Breathe' - but the set's lesser-celebrated moments, such as hip-hop jam 'Diesel Power', Meat Beat Manifesto-esque 'Serial Thrilla' and punky 'Fuel My Fire' have aged equally as well.

Review: Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated releases of 2020, legendary UK producer DJ Krust makes a comeback with his first release in 14 years, and rather surprisingly on Crosstown Rebels - of all labels. While we all know Damian Lazarus' established imprint is anything but drum and bass, it is well known that he was an early champion of the sound, long before his tenure at City Rockers in the early '00s when he embraced 'electroclash' - but that's another story. It's clear that Krust created some of the most seminal records in the genre throughout the nineties and noughties, and he is back in fine form on The Edge Of Everything, having explored radical new philosophies and creative processes. Minimalist arrangements as heard on tracks like 'Constructive Ambiguity' hark back to his signature sound of the aforementioned period, while he also explores more experimental minded beats as heard on 'Antigravity Love' and proper darkside rolling drama exemplified on 'Deep Fields Of Liars'.

Review: 14 years in the making! Krust's follow up to 'Hidden Knowledge' is every bit as diverse, uncompromising and explorative as you'd hope. Blurring the lines between jungle and techno, your brain and the dancefloor, time and space, across the collection the Bristol pioneer takes us to some strange and singular places; the tension and sci-fi isolation of '7 Known Truths', the swaggering space funk of 'Keter The Heavenly', the marching drama and powerful sense of foreboding on 'Negative Returns', the blitzkrieg amen-shattered opener 'Hegel Dialectic', the list goes on. Each cut building and merging to create a truly unique landscape that offers up something new on every investigation, it'll take another 14 years to unravel this album's many mysteries. Play it edge to edge.

Review: Viva Brazil! DJ Andy updates V Recording's longstanding relationship with Brazilian drum & bass with this powerful VA of upfront D&B talent straight from the heart of the motherland. Vibes come courtesy of an exciting range of acts from long-established legends like BTK (who teams up with Gremlinz on the stinking bubbler 'Ganja') and the currently unstoppable L-Side (who delivers two weapons to the collection) to brand new talents like Acuna (who's on fire with the dancehall blaze-up 'Big Cheers') and LOPHIT (who darks us all out with the junglist tear-up 'Loose Ends') A much darker and heavier take on drum & bass than the original sound Bryan Gee imported via the likes of Marky, XRS and Patife over 20 years ago, but still just as exciting, energetic and impeccably produced, Brazil remains one of the most important countries in D&B outside of the UK.

Review: Luke Beavon & Delroy Pottinger aka LSB & DRS presented their full length opus The Blue Hour back in 2019 on Beavon's Footnotes imprint. Almost a year and a half later, we are now treated to an impressive three pack vinyl series featuring a who's who of the scene, all lending their deft hand to the art of the remix. Highlights come from Irish legend Calibre and Dutchman Lenzman who respectively turn 'Frozen' and 'Stop The World' into proper late night steppers in their idiosyncratic style. Spearhead Records' Bcee channels the intelligent drum'n'bass sound of Good Looking Records circa 2001 on another soulful perspective of 'Frozen', while Technicolour & Komatic aka Technimatic take 'Scarred' into life-affirming territory with their Reese-driven roller.

Stark futurism that smoulders at its coldest and will have you shivering at its hottest, vibes range from the shimmering Basic Channel style reflections of 'B1' to the more autonomically minded swagger of 'B3'. Trembling with echoes of his powerful techno work in the past, across this whole collection DB1 keeps one foot in the dance, one foot in the stars throughout.

Review: Bcee's Spearhead imprint celebrates a decade of velvet 170 soul with a collection of classics and exclusives. Having played a pivotal role in the careers of household D&B names such as S.P.Y, Netsky, Ten does well to remind us of the clout and influence it has on the scene by way of evergreen rollers such as "I Refuse" and "By Your Side". With the heavy presence of label mainstays LSB and Hybrid Minds, the label's gossamer remit and glossy output is represented with attention to detail, culminating in Bcee and Kubiks' first track in over 10 years... "Ten Years On". Fitting. Not to be missed.

Review: It's been a fair old while since Dennis "Dego" McFarlane last donned the Tek9 alias, a solo pseudonym he first used in 1991 on the bass-heavy, Bleep and hardcore influenced weightiness of "Kingdom Of Dub". This album - his first under the name since 1999's jazzy and downtempo "Simply" - is not entirely new, but all of the music is previously unreleased. The tracks were produced at various points between 1995 and 2019 and mostly offer warm, melodious, funk-fuelled takes on jungle and drum and bass rich in bustling basslines, snare-heavy beats, jazz-funk chords (something that has long been a feature of McFarlane's work) and picturesque melodies. There are some heavier, rougher and more ragga-influenced cuts present, but the prevailing vibe is warm and positive.

The first, Tears, is a moody and introspective with that was penned while the artists was going through some hard times and personal tragedy. Heartbreak Beats has been put put previously as 'Raw breakbeat tracks 2019 -2020') and was catharsis for the artists. They were written quickly and have a focussed energy that really connects.

Review: You can always be sure of a hugely affecting trip when you tune into something from Sacred Rhythms. And so it proves with this new one from Slam Mode. These are four hugely involving and atmospheric tracks steeped in ambiance. 'Ogman' is humid, dusty and spiritual with its late-night bass subtleties and sustained chords. 'Mientra Duermes' (Reimagined) has a celestial melodic feel over ramshackle house drums and 'Monopole' gets heavy on cancerous and dubbed-out drums with more cosmic chord work serve ing to expand your mind. 'Modus Operandi' is a lush and jazzy deep jungle workout to close.

Once again, it's all previously unreleased business but there's a twist... One of these tracks is actually brand new as Marvellous Cain links up with new producer Sound Shifter for the Good Looking-esque 'Light Source One'. Elsewhere we have Cool Hand Flex's signature choppage and funk on 'Get Down' (a tune which only he, Randall and Hype ever had on dub), we've got more excellent choppage on a very rare DJ Phantasy remix of Sophisticated Bad Boyz 'Feel The Magic' before Dead Dred's Asend digs out the badboy fire of 'Intelone', a track he only ever played once on Kool FM way back in 96, never to see the light of day... Review: Given his status as one of drum and bass's true heavyweights; you'd expect this eighth Calibre full-length to be one of the most hotly anticipated jungle sets of the year. Certainly, it's a fine effort, packed with emotion-rich atmospherics, fizzing rhythms and intricate, occasional beautiful, musical touches. He seems to be at his best when concentrating on musicality, as the delightful "Close To Me', soulful "Wilderness" and summery "Do Not Turn On" prove. There are, of course, rawer moments (see the tech-tinged "Simple Things" and dubstep flex of "Start Again"), but these don't hit nearly as hard as his effortlessly soulful compositions.

Ataru Flip (4:59)
Creeps (Coco Bryce remix) (6:05)
Review: Long-standing collaborators Paul Bowyer (aka Quiet) and Ben Hudson (aka Brain Rays) are back once again and going forces to serve up some brain boggling new jungle sounds. First out of the blocks is 'Slacker' with its twisted synths and taught, bing drums all taking you ever high on waves of euphoria. 'Tigress Canisha' is a watery, aqueous cut with dripping droplets and minimal rhythms over popping drums. 'Ataru Flip' then pulse back just a little to a slightly deeper vibe, but still with relentless form energy and yelping vocal samples. 'Creeps' (Coco Bryce remix) is another glorious one from the always on form Dutchman.

Review: Nia Archives has burst through and made a gigantic impact that now stands her at the forefront of the latest jungle era, and pretty much has done since she first made waves in 2020. Her collagist soundscapes have brought an all new sense of energy and rejuvenation to the genre that has in turn brought in plenty of new fans. While some may label her a revivalist, she emphasises that that aspect of the genre has never really gone away. The 24-year-old's debut album has been much anticipated by fans who have fallen in love with her weightless jungle tracks and intense basslines and they aren't let down here as those sounds resonate throughout.

Review: The only bug you want to pick up this winter, Hospital's third Sick Music compendium is, quite possibly, the label's best one yet. Bulging with talent, you'll be hard pushed what to play first: Total Science's Orbitalesque "Now As It Was Then", Maldini's grunge-groove "Party Time", Netsky's technicolour flying groove carpet remix of Madeon or S.P.Y's absolutely monstrous rub High Contrast. The list goes on... This collection truly is sick.

Review: Hospital drop the second Sick Music comp upon their incredibly loyal fanbase and the good news is that it's a real stormer with a really tasty range of songs from the mega successful D&B label. Some highlights include Muffler's "Pinball Fantasies", which rocks an interesting glitchcore/Planet Mu-style lead melody, an unusual sound for a Hospital banger. Another surprise is the slinky, tech-inspired vocal tune "Turn Up The Music" by Camo and Krooked, a tune that craftily keeps the listener on tenterhooks as it threatens to spill out into complete mayhem. Every bit as strong as the first time around, this is yet another chance to gorge on 22 unmixed D&B future classics from Hospital. Sick indeed.
