Review: Astonishingly, a quarter of a century has now passed since The Prodigy released The Fat of the Land, the inspired rock-rave fusion opus that helped rocket the Essex combo towards superstardom and converted a whole generation of spotty indie kids to the joys of rambunctious rave music. It's certainly worthy of this limited-edition anniversary pressing, which comes on eye-catching silver-coloured vinyl. Of course, we all know the smash hits - the bustling, acid-flecked roll of 'Smack My Bitch Up', ultra-heavy 'Firestarter' and funky, low-slung 'Breathe' - but the set's lesser-celebrated moments, such as hip-hop jam 'Diesel Power', Meat Beat Manifesto-esque 'Serial Thrilla' and punky 'Fuel My Fire' have aged equally as well.

Review: Goldie must have known he had done something special when he made his masterpiece because he gave it the perfect tittle. Timeless is the sort of album that transcends genres, eras and scenes. A quarter of a century after it was first written it still has the same impact that it did back then. The man himself as gone on to become a genuine national treasure with appearances in Eastenders, conducting orchestras, making documentaries for Sky Arts and much more. But it will surely always this record that remains his greatest piece of work.

Review: A new Lone album from Matt Cutler represents an about turn away from the more mellow tones found on 2014's Reality Testing back in favour for the rave tropes that characterised his output circa Pineapple Crush. The nine tracks on Levitate are rife with the energetic fervour of hardcore and jungle, blending peppy tempos and nimble drum licks with the trademark graceful melodies one would expect from a Lone record. You should be familiar with "Backtail Was Heavy," already been premiered via a phone line service and "Vapour Trail" which formally announced Levitate and the other seven cuts from Lone show Cutler is at the top of his game.

Review: Ludvig Cimbrelius has many different aliases to exercise different musical interests, but his work as Illuvia really stands out thanks to its canny blend of jungle and electronica with ambient. Following plentiful digital releases for labels like Hypnus, this marks the first outing on vinyl for Illuvia, finding a natural home on A Strangely Isolated Place. The combination of raging but artfully submerged breakbeats and expansive drone pads is expertly managed here, sounding at once glacial and furiously kinetic. Like the concept of atmospheric jungle taken to the extreme, this is a unique approach to genre fusion that works beautifully.

Review: Those interested in the roots of UK bass music have been well-served of late, with a number of books and compilations focusing on the first wave of British dance music in the late 80s and early 90s. Soul Jazz's latest compilation is a superb addition to this growing list. It showcases music made in the post-bleep and early breakbeat hardcore period, where basslines got bigger, drum breaks faster, and ragga influences started to come to the fore. The selections are on-point throughout from the dub-wise rave rush of Babylon Timewarp's "Durban Poison" and the bleep-and-breaks-meets-proto-jungle shuffle of DJ Dubplate's "Tings A Go On", to the rave-rap goodness of The Freaky's "Time & Age" and the heavily edited darkcore/early jungle insanity that is Krome & Time's terrific "Ganja Man". In a word: essential.

Review: Hospital's place in the history of drum & bass is already assured. The mighty label has been there, at the front, for many many years. Next to a vital stream of red hot 12"s for Das, they have put out tens of critically acclaimed albums and of course endless numbers of compilations jam packed with heat. The latest is another fine once that marks 25 years of the label with all the family favourites old and new featuring. Logistics, Flava D, DJ Marky, Dillinja, Ray Keith, you name, it, they all appear here, remixing killer cuts and tuning the gamut from liquid rollers to soulful anthems to minimal steppers.

Review: The now legendary electronic music duo Chase & Status dropped their debut album More Than A Lot back in October 2008. It was a big success from the off and ended up hitting number 49 on the UK Albums Chart. It was re-issued again two years later with a bonus track and now it gets pressed up on pink marble wax. It is a great reminder of where this now stadium-filling live act has come from with standouts such as the collaboration with rapper Kano on 'Against All Odds' and single 'Pieces' featuring vocals from rapper Plan B.

Review: Drum & bass's most unique gentleman Calibre plunders his vaults to compile a new collection of unreleased gems through the ages. As you'd expect, the end result is a timeless assault of lush grooves, soulful sonics and sweet skippy riddims. From the soft jazz insistency of "Honey Dew" to the hollowed harrowed bass tones of "Bellamee" via the harder, rave-referencing "Sagan" and the deep bass gurgles and DRS's reggae-style vocals on "Eschaton", the only issue here is the fact Calibre hasn't released them sooner. Unarguably incredible.

Review: This special anniversary edition of Squarepusher's debut album Feed Me Weird Things is released almost exactly 25 years to the day after the original. Back then it came on Aphex Twin's now defunct Rephlex label and has not been available on streaming platforms ever since. All remastered from the original DATs and with a new, original booklet filled with note and ephemera it is an essential cop for fans old and new. The record broken out of the tight genre restrictions of the time to pair complex rhythms with disarming melodies.

Review: There is no more iconic figure in the world of drum & bass than Goldie. In fact, he has pretty much transitioned to natural treasure in the years since he operated at the genre's bleeding edge as a DJ, label boss of Metalheadz and producer. His Timeless album, now a hard to believe quarter of a century old, was his big breakthrough and took d&b into new realms. The epic title track will always be the benchmark by which all others are judged by the whole flow the record, precision beat work and lush synth sounds have rarely been bettered.

The Welsh drum & bass innovator has been there since forever, and as a result is rightfully one of the most iconic names in the game. A master of melodic, melancholic jungle and hardcore sounds with a harmonic heart, he returns here with a mighty sixth album on his beloved Hospital Records. Notes From The Underground takes all his usual motifs and evolves them subtly with help from gusts such as Kae Tempest, Anita Blay, UK Apache, Ady Suleiman and more.

Review: Chase & Status ride a new wave with their sixth album, honouring their long-held time in the limelight as two of the UK's most powerful bangercrafting hitmakers. While still managing to nod to times past, this limited new LP also works in brand new UK sounds - drill MCs Unknown T and Backroad Gee, for example, make standout appearance on the tracks 'Run Up' and 'When It Rains', while still retaining elements of creativity that are endemic to Chase & Status only. Meanwhile, UK dancehall maintains its strong standing, with Popcaan and IRAH featuring regularly throughout.

Review: Having scaled the heights of global superstardom over the last decade, Chase & Status last year returned to their more roughneck D&B roots with RTRN II JUNGLE, their retro-futurist fourth studio album. Here they continue that trend via RTRN II FABRIC, their first contribution to the legendary London club's popular DJ mix series. Full to bursting with high-octane Amen breaks, bowel-bothering sub-bass, punchy rhythms and MC flows, the mix sees the long-serving twosome pack 44 killer jungle and D&B cuts old and new into just under 80, all-action minutes. As you'd expect, it's packed with exclusives too - not least a wealth of unreleased Chase & Status productions and 'VIP' dubplate versions. If you love jungle and D&B, you need it in your life.

Review: This ever popular album is back for another reissue as it remains as in demand as ever. Part of the reason for that is that Venetian Snares is an out there kind of guy. This record, his 16th at the time of its release, was catalysed by a trip to Hungary and a moment in time when the artist imagined himself as a pigeon in the grounds of Budapest's Royal Palace. In terms of musical content, this is the artist meeting Planet Mu head on - a cinematic approach to IDM, drum 'n' bass and experimental electronic music that's half dancefloor, half deep concept, and all great.

As a producer, he is no less on point and his debut album proves it. For the first time, it now gets pressed up across three slabs of coloured vinyl. It is part of the 30th-anniversary celebrations of RAM Records and was the record that really put Subby on the map. It mixes up underground jams like 'Deep Space' with his big classic cuts 'Rock It,' 'Timewarp,' 'Could This Be Real.' This limited pressing is a must-have for fans old and new.

Review: Slow and steady: LSB has been known to heads for years now but he's never hurried himself, he's never carved out identikit formulas for the sake of fans, he's never played the predictable games. In true Soul:r style (a label he's now fully signed with) he's focused on ensuring he only releases his very best material since day one. Naturally his album is no different; the gentle fades of "Lydian", the raw emotion of "Circle", the outright epicity of the 8-min "Blinding", the sad farewells of "Missing You"... Every second of the album has been considered and delivered with real thought and detail. Contented? You will be...

Review: Beautifully presented on heavyweight clear vinyl with widescreen gatefold artwork, Technimatic's debut album is a heartfelt creative document from the off. Previously known as Technicolour and Komatic, since signing to Shogun as Technimatic, the duo has developed a stark liquid signature that's seeped in rich emotion and melody. Desire Paths is the zenith of their creative successes so far and is littered with highlights on every corner. From the swashing jungle breaks of "Beneath The Skies" to the resoundingly dark, twisted "Tectonic" via the slower, jazz-infused "Mucky Jeff", everything about this tingle with energy, passion and playability. Debut albums don't come any better than this.

There aren't many artists that have a veritable vault of back dated and in demand tracks, but Calibre is an exception to the rule. Review: In today's climate, the term EP is surely one of the most misused by record labels; we've lost count of the number of two track 12"s that arrive at Juno HQ labelled as EPs in error by thems that don't know. Dutch drum and bass troupe Noisia are fully aware that it means Extended Play as this Purpose EP demonstrates with a full grip of some eight tracks slapped across four 12"s! Housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring artwork from Nik and Khomatech, Purpose features collaborations with contemporaries Phace, Prolix and Evol Intent. Noisia Fans will probably already have soaked up the viciously ill opening track "Oh Oh" and the remainder of the EP doesn't relent one bit with "Running Blind" a particular highlight.

Review: Voraciously prolific, forever far-out, Montreal artist CFCF looks back to look forward on his eighth studio album Memoryland. An album that takes all his influences from early jungle and hardcore to shoegaze indie, chews them up and spits them back with wry, cynical 2020s energy, the album is a mystery tour around CFCF's tastes and inspirations from dreamy sing-along pop punk ('Punksong') to warm and grainy filtered disco house ('Self Service 1999') to bubbly trance-tinged house music ('Slippery Plastic Euphoric') and sugar-sweet two-step ('After The After') Nostalgic but also provocative and very forward-looking, this is arguably CFCF's most comprehensive and ambitious album to date. Thanks for the memories.

Review: Andy C's mega-label Ram celebrates the big 200 in style: triple vinyl in trifold sleeve with etched sixth side, each of the five cuts represent Ram's dark, start extremes. The touching depths of Culture Shock's long-awaited "Piano Dark", the Noisia-level antics of Audio on his June Miller, InsideInfo's deep throat bass on "The Truth" and the add bass fluctuations on Rene's VIP. 200 singles deep and still killing it, Ram have put together a serious package here.

Review: Given his status as one of drum and bass's true heavyweights; you'd expect this eighth Calibre full-length to be one of the most hotly anticipated jungle sets of the year. Certainly, it's a fine effort, packed with emotion-rich atmospherics, fizzing rhythms and intricate, occasional beautiful, musical touches. He seems to be at his best when concentrating on musicality, as the delightful "Close To Me', soulful "Wilderness" and summery "Do Not Turn On" prove. There are, of course, rawer moments (see the tech-tinged "Simple Things" and dubstep flex of "Start Again"), but these don't hit nearly as hard as his effortlessly soulful compositions.

Now, although it is only 17 years later, the record is getting a special 20 Year edition to mark two decades in the game for the producers behind it. This version has had an all-new 2021 remaster so that the visceral synths, fizzing textures and clattering percussion all cut through. Next to the still buzzing originals, a carefully curated mix of contemporary talents have all been tapped up to remix and bring their own sense of flair. It's a big package as a result.

Review: 15 years! Time flies when you're flexing the full spectrum of drum & bass. Friction's label has been one of the 2000s' best independent D&B label success stories, spawning two super-strong generations of the genre in the process. So many of today's most influential acts came through under the Shogun wing and dominate the scene and this album reflects why that happened. From the shattering soul of Monrroe's "Never Too Old" and DJ Marky & Pola & Bryson's deep tech-influenced roller "Into The Blue" to the brilliantly dark (and titled) "Smelly Button" from Skeptical and SP and Proxima's brutal "Limestone", this album - presented in full on heavyweight vinyl - "15 Years Of Shogun Audio" digs deep into everything that's made it stay so consistent over the years and remain future-focused. Here's to another 15 years.

Review: The latest collection from the mighty Soul Jazz draws together a myriad of different styles favoured by black British sound systems, not only reflecting the roots of different communities reaching these shores but also the UK twist that that music has received as result. Reggae forms the backbone of the collection, from the blissful consciousness of Pebbles' 'Positive Vibrations' to the more protest-orientated Brown Sugar's 'Black Pride' and Tabby Cat Kelly's 'Don't Call Us Immigrants'. But the presence of Shut Up & Dance, Ragga Twins, Ray Keith aka The Terrorist and Digital Mystikz helps show the uniquely British areas into which sound system culture evolved - rave, breakbeat, jungle and dubstep.

The former lays down the seamless flow while the latter delivers perfectly introspective lyrics in a heart aching falsetto and all the tunes are solely from The Northern Quarter associates. The liquid drum & bass grooves are soulful and soaring, with plaintive pianos draped over the silky sequences. It's a warm and emotive listen for days at home as well as once dance floors open up again. Favourites include Zero T & Unitsouled's frictionless 'Slightest Moment' and FD's deep diving closer 'Top2Bottom VIP.'

Review: Hospital drop the second Sick Music comp upon their incredibly loyal fanbase and the good news is that it's a real stormer with a really tasty range of songs from the mega successful D&B label. Some highlights include Muffler's "Pinball Fantasies", which rocks an interesting glitchcore/Planet Mu-style lead melody, an unusual sound for a Hospital banger. Another surprise is the slinky, tech-inspired vocal tune "Turn Up The Music" by Camo and Krooked, a tune that craftily keeps the listener on tenterhooks as it threatens to spill out into complete mayhem. Every bit as strong as the first time around, this is yet another chance to gorge on 22 unmixed D&B future classics from Hospital. Sick indeed.

Review: You can always be sure of a hugely affecting trip when you tune into something from Sacred Rhythms. And so it proves with this new one from Slam Mode. These are four hugely involving and atmospheric tracks steeped in ambiance. 'Ogman' is humid, dusty and spiritual with its late-night bass subtleties and sustained chords. 'Mientra Duermes' (Reimagined) has a celestial melodic feel over ramshackle house drums and 'Monopole' gets heavy on cancerous and dubbed-out drums with more cosmic chord work serve ing to expand your mind. 'Modus Operandi' is a lush and jazzy deep jungle workout to close.

Review: 14 years in the making! Krust's follow up to 'Hidden Knowledge' is every bit as diverse, uncompromising and explorative as you'd hope. Blurring the lines between jungle and techno, your brain and the dancefloor, time and space, across the collection the Bristol pioneer takes us to some strange and singular places; the tension and sci-fi isolation of '7 Known Truths', the swaggering space funk of 'Keter The Heavenly', the marching drama and powerful sense of foreboding on 'Negative Returns', the blitzkrieg amen-shattered opener 'Hegel Dialectic', the list goes on. Each cut building and merging to create a truly unique landscape that offers up something new on every investigation, it'll take another 14 years to unravel this album's many mysteries. Play it edge to edge.

Review: Having made a sterling name for himself and his Hidden Hawaii label since first emerging, Felix K finally makes his move to the long-player with this self-assured collection of engaging electronica that spans dry, melodically-bereft spaces, industrially-tinted beats, cavernous drones and dub techno robbed of its signature chord. It's an intense, at times oppressive listen, but with such masterful sound design and a refusal to over-egg any one idea, Felix has successfully created an album that demands attention. For all the avant-garde leanings in Flowers Of Destruction, it's actually not hard work to listen as one post-apocalyptic study glides into the next.

But this is the prolific magic of Matt Gresham, a man whose passion for melody, soul, grit and authenticity are balanced in such a way he consistently smashes it with every construction. Take the rattling jungle amens and choral soaring of "Icarus" or the weighty halfstep and Flume-style vocal trippiness of "Fight 4 U" or the hazy sunrise glimmers of the title track.... Each cut expressing weight, musicality, heaps of space and a range that's at once broad and highly defined. Impressive.

Review: Venetian Snares is nothing if not a pretty out there kinda guy. This record, his 16th at the time of its release (which in itself proves both relentless work rate and unfathomable levels of creative inspiration) was apparently catalysed by a trip to Hungary - hence all track names and the record title are in Hungarian - and a moment in time when the artist imagined himself as a pigeon in the grounds of Budapest's Royal Palace. Take from that what you will.

In terms of musical content, this is Snares, real name Aaron Funk, meeting Planet Mu head on - and if you're familiar with either the label or the artist you should know what that means. A cinematic approach to IDM, drum 'n' bass and experimental electronic music that's half dance floor, half deep concept, and all utterly masterful to say the least.

Long term fans of both Logistics and Hospital will immediately resonate with the 13 tracks here with Gresham signalling a return to the vivid, life affirming brand of drum and bass that helped establish the classic Hospital sound. Review: Etherwood re-confirms all the promise he has shown in recent years with this super new album on the legendary Hospital. It is his fourth long-player in all and shows off his knack for rolling drums and majestic melody while serving up some sweet vocal collabs. Next to the timeless drum &bas sounds come a wealth of influences from rock, indie-pop, techno and downtempo, with lots of lush ambient designs and plenty of hummable top lines. His own vocals also feature on tunes like the heartbroken Fall Awake, while legendary mic man DRS is in fine flow on 'The Current' where he muses on self-medication and more. Neon Dust is another complete album from one of the scene's finest.

Review: What a trip it's been for Spectrasoul; going solo with their label Ish Chat in spring 2016, they've assaulted us continuously over the course of 18 months. Taking us deep, dark, soulful, savage with abandon; never before has their melting pot been so fizzy or foundational. Naturally this third album is no exception as we glide and slide between the styles; the "Glimpse"-style space soul of "Move On", the Fracture-like hardcore references on "Push & Pull", the trembling chimes, sweeping strings and delicate vocals of "Wrong To Love You"(with LSB), the classic techstep movement of "Pinger" are just a handful of on-point constructions from a duo who are living the creative dream right now. Essential.

Review: "Black Lotus" is the long awaited Mindscape LP, out on Citrus. The first sampler was an instant anthem and had loads of support from all the usual suspects in the drum & bass scene. With the second sampler Chris Su teamed up with the Mindscape boys, and delivered a wicked vocal roller featuring MC Rymetyme. This album has a great diversity of styles and sounds - ranging from a dirty, noisy rave tracks to solo productions. Check it out.

Review: Andrea opened this sophomore album Due In Color mostly during 2020 and 2021. You may reverb that those times were slightly crazy due to the small matter of a pandemic which is what lead the artists to explore a world of more hazy and experimental jazz sounds. That in turn inspired him to use more acoustic sounds in his music and so this is a record that turns its back on dark and booming club spaces and heads instead towards blooming fields of expansive downtempo, textured ambient and dreamy soundscapes.

Review: Hospital Records is one of the most mighty in all of drum & bass and here it joins up with Soulvent who now join the family. It's a label founded by Joe Goss, Jack (Pola) Higgins and Liam Holyoak-Rackal that has been on top of its game since 2014 and at the forefront of the new generation. This fiery 14 track collection is packed full of brand new remixes of classics from both imprint's back catalogues. There is dream-like stuff from Nu:Tone, Hugh Hardie is in fine form on his take on Japan-based Mountains' 'I'm Free' (feat. Kojo)' and one-to-watch DJ and producer Vektah drops some real jungle heat.

Review: Jim Coles' decision back in 2010 to implement a swerve in his sonic trajectory away from his hip-hop past as 2tall in favour of a more all-encompassing approach that touches on various strands of bass culture as Om Unit has paid off and then some. Subsequent releases on Exit, Autonomic, Civil Music, Metalheadz and his own Cosmic Bridge imprint have all shown Om Unit eminently capable of tempo shifting productions that appeal to fans of Bass music, Drum & Bass and footwork alike. The latter has been explored further while the Dream Continuum collaboration with Machinedrum on Planet Mu and his Philip D. Kick alias where the link between Chicago's juke heritage and UK Jungle was explored. All this and more is included on Threads, a debut Om Unit LP for Civil Music that deftly collates various strands (or threads) of his production career over the past fifteen years for a cohesive 15 track set that veers through of hip hop, dubstep, jungle and even house.
