Review: Response & Pliskin continue their relentless exploration of the darker side of d&b with this new drop for Tempo. Prior albums for Northern Front and Western Lore have been masterclasses in their cinematic vision for brutalist breakbeat science, and now they're bringing that scope to the always-essential Dutch label Tempo. There are snarling slammers, pad-soaked dreamscapes and oddly-angled experiments which prove how much the Manchester duo are capable of. Pressed up on three heavyweight slabs and ready for your shelling pleasure, this is what upfront d&b is all about.

Review: Dive headfirst into a unique sonic underground experience as Hospital Records proudly unveils the highly anticipated debut album, Streets, Love & Other Stuff, from the dynamic duo P Money and Whiney. This groundbreaking collaboration is a perfect storm, fusing P Money's totemic grime background with Whiney's futuristic drum & bass style, as the pair continue to break boundaries and push the realms of dance music. The collaboration is an energetic one, combining the driving force of drum & bass with the urban lyrical situation of grime.

Review: DJ Trax takes perfect stock his sonic journey so far across this superb new album, Break From Reality. It features everything we have come to know and love from the man - rolling breaks, jazzy licks, hip-hop stylings and cinematic synths - but all served up in new and highly compelling ways. Dons of the game like Goldie and Loy have already been digging it and we are too, from the mad and unrelenting drum flurry of the opener to soul drenched breaks like 'Flame' and the acid jazz/4Hero era throwback sounds of 'Long Rhode Home' and its lush broken beats. A richly rewarding drum & bass album from one of the best in the game right now.

Review: Wilkinson is a big name when it comes to the contemporary drum & bass scene. He is someone whose name you will find on all the line-ups of the major clubs and festivals around the world and is no stranger to bringing the noise to Ibiza, either. He has a multi-genre approach that finds him playing effective and eclectic sets that appeal to all manner of crowds. Back in 2013, he dropped his debut solo album Lazers Not Included on Ram - where else - and set all this success in motion. This tenth anniversary edition comes on yellow vinyl with UK number 20 single 'Dirty Love' and many more gems.

Review: There's just no stopping Coco Bryce, who casually drops his third LP of the year on MYOR like it's no big deal. As low-slung opener 'High Commander' demonstrates, this isn't a one-trick jungle dump, but an album proper with nooks and crannies to get lost in. There are of course plenty of dazzling breakbeat excursions to savour - this is Coco Bryce after all - but even then his style has a refreshing, dynamic quality which makes for listening music as much as shockout juice. The low tempo beatdowns are just as incredible, full of vibe and bursting with inspiration, proving, as we already said, there is NO stopping our bredda in Breda.

Review: Serial album crafter NIGELTHREETIMES makes his Astral Black debut with this limited LP. His third album in as many years, Metropolis N sees the Queens junglist bringing a little NYC intensity to mix with a vast array of instrumentals. Painting from a deep, cosmic palette, outerplanetary cuts like 'Sad Day Pass Xfer' and the poignant jazz feels of 'Early Morning From 103rd Street' rub shoulders with the much edgier grit of tracks like the hardcore inspired 'Road2Rails' and the gully rave skipper 'Phantom Shores' over a punchy and precision eight track saga. Each number sitting in that perfect sweet spot between dancefloors and daily life, Nigel's repping the US with authenticity, empathy and a timeless vision. Three thumbs up.

Review: After the success of the first volume, Fabio returns to curate a second round of Generation Liquid featuring the absolute pinnacle of the liquid d&b sound. As a genre which gave rise to a tidal wave of imitators and formula followers, it takes the authority of a legend like Fabio to sift through and present the real deal, whether it's widely hailed classics or hidden treasures that help paint the picture. Soulful, uplifting and driven by d&b's relentless energy, this is another testament to liquid's vital role in the story of breakbeat evolution, featuring legends aplenty from High Contrast to Calibre, DJ Marky to Alix Perez.

Sobriquet (feat John Elliot) (4:36)
Review: Berlin born Felix K is a music composer and producer with a sound perfectly befitting his hometown, as proven here on Nullpunkt. This is an EP of stylish techno for darkened basements - the drums are heavy but never lack funk, the synths are scuffed metal but full of soul and the whole ambience of the tunes is gritty, grey and lo-fi yet they are all hugely alluring and evocative. There is a spooky sense of unease in 'Earth' and real dub brilliance to 'Who Are You.' 'Sobriquet' is a more intense rhythmic exercise with many layers or interlocking sound while a Deconstruction By Forest Drive West of 'Earth' is late night techno minimalism par excellence.

Review: Ready for a reload? Fresh from dropping his almighty debut album Firm Meditation on us earlier this year, Rupture roustabout Double O rewinds time on Nullpunkt for two hefty hits from his discography gone by. 'Love Of Jah' sets the tone. Last spotted around 2011, its soulful hurricane still hasn't died down one bit thanks to those pummelling drums and all-consuming pads. The 15 year old 'Niaibingi' sounds just as future, too. Originally released on Hidden Hawaii on his heartfelt 'For My Brother' EP, it still shakes all bones in a 20 mile radius whenever played.

Review: Around the world in 12 wubs; Alix Perez's superlative 1985 continues to dig deeper and deeper into our psyche with the third volume of their faultless Atlas VA series. As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electro funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Review: Kruder & Dorfmeister's Conversions mix album takes you right back to 1996, when the Austrian duo were taking inspiration from the UK d&b pioneers and giving the sound their own lounge-y twist. For the first time since the mix was released, it's being presented as a partially mixed double vinyl edition, giving you access to some of the seminal cuts which make the mix such an enduring classic. From the easy lead in of DJ Unknown Face's 'Dat's Cool' to the soulful vocal licks and skittering breaks of Omni Trio's 'Nu Birth Of Cool' on to the cosmic jungle of Space Link's 'Time Zone', it's a masterclass through and through.

Review: All hail King Krust, a true totem of d&b innovation from his earliest days right up to the present moment. The Irrational Numbers series on Wonder Palace is doing a sterling job of combing back through his monumental legacy as a key protagonist in the Bristol-rooted Full Cycle crew and there's so much heat a third double-LP volume doesn't feel anything close to excessive. On this edition we're getting treated to unbelievable workouts like his Gang Related production 'Rukus' and the widescreen scope of 'The Resister', a staggeringly visionary slice of hi-tech soul from 1993. There's just so much invention and expression on here, rightly confirming Krust's place in the d&b hall of fame.

Now available on this beautiful triple vinyl format, he's back once again to take us on a trip through his influences and widescreen musical vision. Buckle up and be prepared to roll from full-on technoid d&b ('Hard Times') to bubbling, twisted funk ('Werk It') via smouldering, unclassifiable dark soul ('Ride Or Die') and dreamy breakbeats ('Standing By') With many other sides to his sound revealed throughout, this is an exceptional and very impressive album.

Review: Is the d&b world ready for the return of Chase & Status? We think so, as the major label duo bounce back in double quick time to follow up on last year's What Came Before. As the title implies, Ruff Cuts finds Saul Milton and Will Kennard digging in for some rapid response bombs that build on their reputation as stadium-sized breakbeat bossmen. With big MC guest spots from the likes of Hedex and ArrDee and the drops that make you check you've not stepped off a cliff, this is the sound of top tier d&b from a duo who have changed the game like few others.

Review: Rejoice! Technimatic return with their fourth studio album For All Of Us and it's another stunning immersive trip into some drum & bass's most musical and soulful corners. Always keeping the perfect balance between dreamy and dancefloor, flavours range from the mischievous rave twists of 'Coming Back' to the hazy halftime swoons of 'You Call Me' by way of rich DRS-fronted soul ('Risk Everything') and rattling feel-good Creative Source style liquid ('Moment To Moment') With less featured vocalists and more focus on timeless drum & bass vibes that they first made themselves known with, this is arguably one of Technimatic's best albums to date.

When you get past the sheer volume of his released work, there's also the oceans of unreleased exclusives from his sets throughout a monumental career, which is where the Shelflife series comes in. As you can tell by the triple-vinyl heft of this eighth entry in the series, the man is sat on an incredible amount of heat. Running the gamut from soul-soaked uplifters to atmospheric dreamers and on to sharp-angled, techy monsters, this is Calibre quality through and through.

Review: The second release from Alex Egan's Utter sub label Quoth finds a link-up between Pearl River Sound and The Horn - two outlier operators with plenty to say when their machines collide. Pearl River Sound has been scattering outstanding releases on Further, Seagrave and Further Electronix amongst others, while The Horn comes from serious Devon techno heritage having cut his teeth on Evolution back in t'day. This is all about upfront material though, with a tendency towards microtonal braindance that veers from the self-explanatory collaboration 'Modular Grime' to solo forays into off-kilter, acidic electro funk. Nowhere near as derivative as a lot of current braindance, this is real freaked-out electronics for those with discerning taste.

Review: This classic set from the one and only The Rootsman takes us back to 1999 but has been newly edited and reimagined for this release on Partial. It was originally released on the Third Eye Music Label in 1999 and still hits hard today. There are jungle overtones to the opener 'We Come Rough' which brings the energy to kick off before things sink into a much more heady and psyched-out dub on 'Exodus'. 'To The Foundation' has a jazzy broken beat energy to it and 'Murder On The Orient Express' brings prance percussion and laid-back rhythms. 'Berber Bashment' is the standout on the B-side with its weird and wonderful vocal effects.

Future drum & bass specialists Western Lore serve up the third part of their Shadow Rhythms compilation series, channelling various hardcore-continual influences - breakbeat, dubwise, rave, ambient - through an eight-track set. Response, Denham Audio, Elkie, Eusebeia, Bluematter, Pod, Wrecked Lightship, and Low End Activist provide tribute. Less concerned with paying homage to the old-school, these ones come instead revel in the possibilties modern production can bring to jungle's round table - a few of them could have been made in the 1990s. Wrecked Lightship's 'Shell', Response's 'Tides' and Eusebeia's 'Turning Point' are our go-tos here.

Response & Pliskin continue their relentless exploration of the darker side of d&b with this new drop for Tempo.

Eusebeia is an incredibly prolific producer, with swathes of music released via cassette on his own Rebellion Electronics before being snapped up by the likes of Livity Sound and Western Lore. Now he builds on a burgeoning relationship with Samurai Music by delivering a triple LP of advanced yet delicate jungle variations in a style he's making all his own. Taking the brooding moodscapes of dub techno and ambient and fusing it with the deft programming chops of Photek et al, he's calmly positioning himself as one of the most inventive d&b operators out there. The quality just doesn't let up across these 12 tracks, spread out and cut nice and loud so you can lose yourself in the persuasive immersion of his sound.

Review: London-based producer Otik releases his first album Cosmosis on Martyn's label 3024. The 11-track LP signifies the fourth album on the imprint across its ten-year tenure, showcasing a more introspective side to Otik's musical output. The album leans into delicate melodies, hazy atmospheres and lush analogue sounds, often evoking blissed-out feels and ripples of brilliant colour. Produced three years ago during lockdown, Cosmosis comes after a period of spiritual struggles, where Otik questioned his faith, religious beliefs, and the concepts of right and wrong. While the pandemic allowed ample time for reflection, Otik translated these thoughts into music from his Peckham-based studio, later finding a home on 3024's evolving discography. Keen to release a body of work that explores the journey of enlightenment and the struggles to get there, Otik drew inspiration from the luminary filmmaker Terrence Malick and how Malick portrayed ideas and philosophies in films like The Tree of Life and Voyage of Time. As a result, the record conveys a compelling narrative of rebirth, told through exquisite sound design and a push-pull pace that oscillates across the album.

Hardcore Blips (Fanu remix) (5:22)
Review: Malaga-based producer Pablo Dread comes to Beat Machine Records for the eleventh edition of the special series Swinging Flavors, this time for the titular 'Hardcore Blips'. It's a limited edition 7" vinyl featuring swanging bassline kicks, shaking us to our core. This is a full-throttle journey hurtling towards uncontrollable euphoria with electrifying vibrations that magnetically pull us into a one-way ticket to ecstasy. The track's old-school rave sound, a hallmark of Dread's productions, immerses us ambiances typical of the 90s, with recurring piano chords that give way to a heavy and strict drum & bass drop. The single features a special remix by Fanu (Janne Hatula), known for his dynamic and evolving rhythms. Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, Fanu takes a departure from his usual thick chord-driven pieces, opting for a more minimal yet delightfully busy and slightly wonky approach. Drawing inspiration from Luke Vibert, this remix adds a playful and unique twist to the track.

Review: Re:st continues to be an incredible source of adventurous thinking beyond the structures of drum & bass, and this latest record from Ghost Warrior would be hard pressed to claim an obvious link to the genre. It's more of an experimental jazz offering, using hollowed out notes and whispers of instrumentation, and yet somewhere in the sampling-as-artform process it captures some of the mind-bending magic of Source Direct, Photek et al. Delicate and moody as hell, this is another realm of music opening up and it's one we hope we get to explore deeper on further releases.

Review: It seems fitting that Suburban Base's 100th release should be a celebration of one of the legendary hardcore and jungle label's earliest and best-loved releases - QBase's 1991 rave anthem 'Hardcore Will Never Die', a sweat-soaked anthem written and produced by label founder Dan Donnelly. An early, stab-happy and previously unreleased 1991 version kicks off proceedings, then it's old and new remixes all the way. Amongst the highlights you'll find a tough, piano-sporting '92 hardcore revision courtesy of Shades of Rhythm, a bouncy 4/4 hardcore revision by Aston of the Freestylers, a fiendishly funky and weighty re-wire by former Prodigy man Leroy Thornhill, a skittish jungle mix by Pete Cannon, a genuinely rushing Dream Frequency rub and the small matter of DJ Hype's previously 'VIP' only 'Funky Hardcore' take.

Review: Did you know that Iceland had its own rather influential rave scene back in the 1990s? Whatever the answer to that question, you will want to check out this first-ever collection of anthems from that era which is now on vinyl for the first time. This collection came on Thule offshoot label TMT Entertainment as a CD in 1992 and features memorable and timeless tracks from back then, many of them now with cult status. It's called Alsaela, which translates as "ecstasy" and gives you some idea of what to expect from it. It features a non-stop selection of old school rave alongside some lost and previously unavailable classics by Agzilla & DJ L.S.K and some unreleased gems from AJAX. A great bit of history that still does the trick.

Review: Dutch hardcore label Sealand have tapped up legendary breakbeat antagonist FFF for a special 7' release which stays true to the rowdy, cut-up style both label and artist are known for. On the A-side, Tommy de Roos flies solo for 'Titan (Back On The Case)', a full-tilt raggacore explosion to set the dance alight in all the right ways. On the flip, we get a true insight into the hardcore culture from this part of the world as sealand's finest rapper KD and local scratch legend DJ Vindictiv jump on for a 'Dead City Version' of the track, marking the first time the old friends of FFF's have appeared on the same record as him.

It has been fully remastered and officially licensed for this reissue which is sure to win it a whole new raft of fans. There is a real lust for this sort of authentic old-school energy right now - barreling breakbeats, raved-up synths and brain-frying pads that cause utter carnage on the dance floor. Even all these years later it still sounds as good as anything in its genre.

Review: Waggle your wonga gang! DLR is hitting the town and he's stacking up the paper with his third studio album Money Till I Got None. Of course when we say 'paper', we actually mean 'fat greasy d&b grooves', when we say 'stacking' we actually mean 'rolling out', and when we say 'waggle your wonga', we mean 'listen up you lot because this is one the genre's tightest, brightest groove sculptors at play and he's dealing it out like Noel Edmunds in Deal Or No Deal'. Seriously, this is super timeless tackle that nods in all the right directions; heavy, techy, funky, bruised with gritty robotic soul and all the other good things Sofa Sound stand for. And when we say that, we really mean it.

He now makes a welcome return with a fourth instalment in his Irrational Numbers series on Wonder Palace Music, which gather together the glories of his 90s output which, at the time, were spread far and wide across many of the era's finest labels. It comes across four sides of vinyl and takes in his usual deft designs an innovative rhythms from the slick but jumpy minimal of the opener to the plug-in bass depths of 'Jazz Note II' via the tightly coiled funk of 'Not Necessarily A Man'. Another doozy from the drum & bass don.

Review: After nearly two decades' worth of releases on prominent drum & bass labels such as Creative Source, Soul:R and Paradox Music, Paris-based producer Naibu finally launches his own imprint, Minato Music, and so kicks things off with a fresh new solo LP, Sans Soleil, drawing inspiration from the very best of 90s drum & bass as it was heard in the Japanese anime of that period. Indeed, a vast array of anime spectacles, from Noiseman Sound Insect to Perfect Blue, make riveting use of the formative genre as an auditory driver of plot action; Naibu pays homage to this now established connotation, working in a 40-piece string orchestra, a Japanese women's choir, and the vocals of singer Robert Manos, blending the evocative beauty of the human soul with cold, synthesized sounds, deep subs and original, handcrafted breakbeats. A massive project, Sans Soleil took nearly 5 years to complete.
