Review: Bournemouth production unit Ulterior Motive have done nothing but go from strength to strength since signing to Metalheadz. Being very public about their aim for this album in interviews, they've explained how their debut album is 100 per cent drum & bass and pays respect to both the genre and Metalheadz. The result is a refreshing long player that doesn't dip into multi-genre territories, but rather explores the 170 genre and all its many sub flavours. From the growling, ominous roller "Inta National" to the tech steppy sci-fi weird-out "Short Circuit" to the Full Cycle-style jazzy badness of "Sideways" this is a love letter to drum & bass and a calling card for two of the most creative producers operating in the game right now.

Review: Jim Coles has previously spoken about this second Om Unit full length being "a nod to the sound" of his "teenage self". Given the fact that he's rediscovered his jungle and hip-hop roots in recent years, it's an accurate description. The fact that he's also mined Goldie's sample archive to help create the sound of Inversion is also telling. While it's not a straightforward jungle set - there are plenty of wonky moments, skewed downtempo interludes, footwork influences and trips into expansive IDMterritory - the skittish breaks, foreboding noises and murky textures all scream classic D&B. It adds a little spice to an already excellent set, delivering a range forward-thinking tracks with their roots firmly in the past.

Review: Cor blimey governor, this'll put lead in your pencil. Radio 1 broadcaster and all-round badman Rene LaVice teams up with early 2000s donny hitmakers Future Cut for this incredible EP on Metalheadz. "Nine Strings" is pure breakbeat venom. Thunderous bass, grizzly funk and severe amounts of evil in all the right spaces and places, this is real grown up stuff right here. "Eyes" on the B carries just as much weight and horsepower but comes with just a smidgeon of deep dream soul.

Review: Goldie's influential Metalheadz label continues to mark 25 years in the game with super special, one-sided 12". It arrives with Soul:r and Inneractive logos delicately etched into one side of vinyl and one of the label's biggest and best hits of recent time son the other. Goldie himself has described it as "one of the purest drum and bass tracks I've ever heard," and it sure is a super distilled but hugely effective cut from two powerhouses in Spirit and the late great Soul:r boss Marcus Intalex. The icy cold synths, minimalist drums and futurist sense of atmosphere all make this a truly timeless classic.

Review: After several years of real jugular-directed underground scuds, Survival & Script finally reveal the whole Scar picture with their debut album Orkyd. Stretching from velvet vocals to out-of-this-world drum textures (sometimes within one tune), the duo have created a collection that really explores the contrast and shades between subgenres in a style of its own. Like the foggy harmonica blues wrapping over the classic Headz wasp bass and thundering cymbals on "Omnipresent", the gritty top bass but juicy funk on "Renegade Kicks" or the rampant sci-fi thrust of "For A While"... Few D&B albums hold down such a widescreen view with such sharp focus. Contender for drum & bass album of the year right here.
