[Re:Jazz] - "Inner City Life" (6:40)
Review: Timeless is Goldie's most iconic and enduring album. In 2021, it is now an unreliable 25 years old. As well as it getting its own standalone reissue, the most famous single from it also gets a re-release alongside some big remixes from key contemporary players. The 2020 Remaster kicks off and immediately sends shivers down your spine. Binary State then go for a dark, twisted, deep version, DBridge's Sonic Nostalgia mix is a real stepper with a menacing bassline and he closing cut is a lush and lounge-y [Re:Jazz] that is pure perfection.

Review: After five years spent building his reputation via superb, in-demand 12" singles, Stefan "ST" Wust has finally got round to delivering his debut album. Made up entirely of untitled tracks, the set shimmies between sounds and styles at will, showcasing his deep-held love for numerous styles of electronic music. It variously touches on watery ambience, classic IDM, blustery percussion workouts, dubbed-out mood-scapes, Detroit-influenced club cuts, freaky Afro-acid, low-slung deep house, intelligent techno, jungle-influenced smashers, and sparkling, beat-less futurism. In other words, it's exactly the kind of eclectic - but on-point - album we'd expect, only five or six times better than we'd hoped for. Yes, it really is that good.

Review: It's the anthem that just won't quit. Having celebrated a decade of Gold Dust with a whole stack of remixes earlier this year - even though the tune is actually closer to 12 or 13 years old - the Bad Company founder-turned-popstar DJ Fresh now serves up this special gold vinyl edition for Record Store Day. Complete with the VIP and instrumental (which are still arguably the best versions out there) it's yet another way you can get blasted with one of the most iconic and euphoric hooks in modern drum & bass. You can't get enough of this style.

Review: Limited edition gold vinyl repress of Leviticus' monumental track, 'Burial', remastered for 2023 and back on its original home Philly Blunt. This release resurrects the original mixes alongside some iconic remixes from the 90s, encapsulating a significant chapter in the jungle movement. A landmark release, not only signifiying a pivotal era in jungle but also marking the inaugural release on Philly Blunt, kicking things off as they were meant to go on. Crafted in Dillinja's home studio under the collaborative genius of Jumpin Jack Frost, in turn operating under the moniker Leviticus, the original mixes appear in full force here - 'Madamoselle' and 'Lovers Rock' - resonating with rare groove and reggae influences that each propel the track to Notting Hill Carnival fixture status, eventually catching the ear of Pete Tong who facilitated a mainstream release on FFRR the following year.

Review: Only a week or two after dropping the second of two ambient albums in 2022, masterful sound sculptor ASC is back with another release. This one finds him embracing drum & bass on limited coloured vinyl for Past Inside The Present. The majestic Eye Of The Storm is a suspensory trip through the heavens with delicate drum & bass rhythms and lush swathes of synths. 'Reflection' is just as awash with smeared synth beauty over the floating drum breaks, then 'Low Tide' is a lo-fi workout from the depths, a vibe that continues on the more busy and dark 'Life Cycle.' Another exceptional bit of work form the one and only ASC.

Review:  Exactly two years since their debut album Desire Paths, Shogun duo Technicolour & Komatic dish up their sophomore and it's even slicker and consistent than the first. With a finely honed signature that's unmistakeably their own, no other act do liquid in this way. From the cloud-bouncing floatation session of "Parallel" and raw string power of "Clockwise" right the way through to the final salvos of the soulful mourns of "Hold On A While" and the halfstep dreaminess of "It Must Be", every track here has a purpose without so much of a hit being chased or a vocal being added for feature's sake. Authentic and unashamedly deep.

Review: Soul:R roll out this 12" accompaniment to Mid Mic Crisis, aimed to satisfy the needs of any DRS fans who prefer his music on vinyl and it's also a handy sampler for anyone that's not yet checked the collaboration heavy set from the Manchester MC. Given the sheer standard of artists that contributed, we don't envy whoever it was at Soul:R that was tasked with plucking four cuts for this 12" but the label have done a fine job. Most selectors out there will be happy to see the dark side crew cut "Bun Ya Too" here, whilst the skittering futurism of Calibre collaboration "Something To Believe In" was made for the vinyl format!

The Horn Track
Review: Strap yourselves in for the return of Missile Vintage with a fifth transmission and this one is a track from the boss himself. Missile Records founder Tim Taylor crafted this banger back in 1992 and released it on the legendary FFRR imprint. It soon made its mark on the rave scene of the time and has remained influential to generations of DJs, dancers and producers ever since. Now it comes back to vinyl in original form, as well as next to a huge Foghorn mix from Micky Finn and a more physical and breaks-lead remix from Blade. A great package that joins the dots between then and now.

What I Was Doing When I Was Doing What I Was Doing (8:30)
Review: As Djrum, Londoner Felix Manuel has exclusively restricted his output to the 2nd Drop label - remember that immense debut album Seven Lies from 2013??? Absent from the shelves of record shops since April last year, Manuel resurfaces here with some much needed material, not for 2nd Drop but Geoff Presha's ever on point Samurai Red Seal endeavour. If you are a Felix fan this partnership makes perfect sense and hopefully we will see more Djrum music given the Samurai Red Seal! Premium beat science is evident on both cuts here, with the little graffiti can shakes on the epic 8 minute A side "Plantain" a nice touch. Hit the superbly titled flip "What I Was Doing When I Was Doing What I Was Doing" for a more abstract, dank basement affair.

Review: The future sound of dark has just arrived. Phace has re-written the rule book. We kick off with "Now", the opening tune to this four track EP of creepy, fearful soundscapes and lush hostile basslines. The sheer destructiveness of "Vitamin P" shows the damage Phace can do. "Species" is a hostile soundtrack of pure dancefloor destruction while "Oceans Of Emptiness" is a pure neo funk anthem. This EP is transporting us forward into the 22nd century.

Review: Although now better known for their respective solo work, and the latter's involvement with Sean Canty as Demdike Stare, Andy Stott (pictured above) and Miles Whittaker's Millie & Andrea project stands as one of Modern Love's more unique projects. Releasing a string of 12? singles on Modern Love sub-label Daphne from 2008-2010, the duo's music under the name experimented with various combinations of 2-step, jungle, grime, dub techno and footwork across five 12? singles. Now they return with Drop the Vowels, which makes complete sense given underground music's renewed fascination with all things revolving around the hardcore continuum. Just as wide ranging as previous material, with the LP covers the kind of tectonic mood pieces and wiry noise techno as Stott and Whittaker's recent solo material whilst delivering some of the most straight-up dancefloor material Modern Love has put out in years. Without doubt one of the albums of the year.

Review: Some of the biggest D&B cuts delivered so far this year, the digital release of "Until The World Ends" has caused so much havoc BSE can finally unleash the vinyl versions. And boy do they sound better for it on wax. From the savage roughage of the State Of Mind-co-piloted title track to the demonic, psy-minded techno bluntness of the riff on "Ego" via the planet-wide rips on "Bad", this is essentially a blue-print on how to creatively develop viciously dark, neuro drum & bass without compromise. Shucks, they've even got a tribute to one of the best actors of the past 50 years. Wave your white flags now.

Crackdown (6:29)
Review: Goldie's influential Metalheadz label continues to mark 25 years in the game with super special, one-sided 12". It arrives with Soul:r and Inneractive logos delicately etched into one side of vinyl and one of the label's biggest and best hits of recent time son the other. Goldie himself has described it as "one of the purest drum and bass tracks I've ever heard," and it sure is a super distilled but hugely effective cut from two powerhouses in Spirit and the late great Soul:r boss Marcus Intalex. The icy cold synths, minimalist drums and futurist sense of atmosphere all make this a truly timeless classic.

Ivy Lab & Emperor - "Pepper" (Deft remix)
Review: Ivy Lab provides Critical Music with its first physical release of 2014 with a four-track double 12". To begin with there's the piano-ambient introduction of "Missing Persons", which in a way sounds like a highly sped-up Burial track combined with Frank Carter III's vocals full of a similar sounding soul heard in Storm Queen's crossover hit "Look Right Through". The drums remain super-quick on "Live On Your Smile" alongside warbled computer bleeps and melancholic female vocals, while "Sunday Crunk" is a hip hop-inspired, MPC-styled slow jam that may well take its inspirations from southern rap. Lastly on this deluxe package, Project: Mooncircle and 2nd Drop artist Deft touches-up Ivy Lab & Emperor's "Pepper" for something verging on heavy dubstep mixed with some growling, Fis-like effects.

Review: Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y has been in fine form this year, churning out the hits at a rate of knots. Here he serves up five more slammers to round off the well-received Alone in the Dark trilogy. Opener "Transmission" is undeniably one of his moth forthright tunes to date - a bombastic, riot-inducing anthem fuelled by thunderous electro bass and mind-altering riffs. There's also a tech-tinged feel to the rave-meets-D&B heaviness of "Transmission", while "Dominator Mode" contains some of his toughest drums to date. Elsewhere, "Lockdown" is a buzzing hum of throbbing energy and "Dreaming" tips a wink to the producer's liquid past via a wonderfully sauced-eyed fusion of blissful musicality and tight bottom-end pressure.

Review: Emotional Response is delighted to present Benoit B's new project 'Terra Utopia'. 8 tracks of atmospheric breaks that unfold across ambient and drum and bass.

This debut offers the artist a new direction, connected to feelings of an intangible warmth - where empty urban expanse and latent stillness meets a Mediterranean azure of sky and sea. Oscillating, ethereal.

The music was created in a short time frame; short pieces, linked around a laconic structure flowing as if across some imaginary astral void.

An invitation, where time slows, days stretch, cloudless nights lead to a romantic dawn, the narrative to allow the listener the space and choice to dream.

Fear no more, the heat of the sun.

Dirty Love (feat Talay Riley - TC remix)
Review: Last year's Lasers Not Included album confirmed what many had suspected; Wilkinson is a bonafide star producer with the capacity to drive Drum N Bass back into the commercial force it once was. It's been a rapid rise for the South West Londoner who used to spend his days potting plants in Ronnie Wood's favourite garden centre and the foundations laid by his LP are expanded on with this new 12" for RAM. "Dirty Love" sees Wilkinson team up with silky voiced UK vocalist Talay Riley and it's a partnership that should be explored more as the former's production is the perfect accompaniment to the latter's killer vox. Flip over for a remix from TC that lovingly adds some dirt to proceedings.

Following last year's "Until The World Ends" comes another quartet of hurters; The Audio-on-steroids "Thug" was the first to be unleashed earlier this year to rapturous response. It's now joined by the equally gnarly "Pull The Trigger", the Tiki-fronted punk-like "Skin Crawler" and the metallic techno odyssey "Kill That Noise". Violence never sounded so good.

Review: While Calyx & Teebee have been working together since 1004, 1x1 is their first collaborative full-length excursion for four years. Typically, it hits hard from the start, with the bombastic neuro-funk smasher "Nothing Left" setting the tone. There are plenty more big room bangers, of course, including the ragga-jungle revivalism of "False Alarm", and bowel-bothering heaviness of "Ghetto (feat Doctor)". It's not all straight-up dancefloor filth, though; check, for example, the Police-sampling vocal shuffler "Long Gone", the trap-step wobble of "Cloud 9", and the Hospital style, radio-friendly, festival drum and bass of "Takes One To Know One".

Review: Since he first landed on our radar via Vivid a few years back, Yosh has dished out enough high grade garage and breakbeat gear to fuel the scene on his own. Not only a prolific producer, he's also got a razor sharp flair which edges him in front of a crowded scene, and now he's back to Vivid to show us exactly what he's about with a 12-track double-pack, his biggest release to date. In one sense you should know exactly what to expect - elevated steppers and deft rollers, but the fundamental appeal of Yosh is all those ear-snagging traits which make his tracks sparkle, and you never know what they're going to be until the needle's tracking in that groove. Now you can enjoy that sensation 12 times over - a good deal if ever we saw one.
