The Vision EP
Cat: PHUD 12003. Rel: 24 Nov 15

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Vision (6:15)
Heaven (6:19)
Stage Fright (4:29)
Square One (5:36)
Review: Following their reunion on Metalheadz earlier this year, the legendary partnership of Digital & Spirit return to their spiritual home Phantom Audio with four mammoth jungle gems... Ageless, uncompromised and galvanised with a certain sense of dark danger, each cut hits hard. "Vision" is the stepper for set with its Dispatch-style bass plucks, "Heaven" is a skippy, subby early 90s homage, "Stage Fright" is all drama and drums (think late 90s Doc Scott) while "Square One" is an amen frenzy laced with ghostly cries and bowel-battering subs. It's like they never stopped producing together.

Digital & Horrific James - "Too Much" (5:23)

Digital, Flava & Horrific James - "Lava" (6:27)
Digital, Flava & Horrific James - "Voice Of The Jungle" (5:19)
Review: Strident Trident business as Digital, Horrific James and Flava team up for a knuckle-dusting bass jungle orgy... Gritty, grainy and powered by drums rough enough to make a rogue bishop blush. Prepare to lose your hair with the distorted bass on "Friday 13th", expect your every bone to shudder and shake to the militant snare rolls on "Too Much", anticipate dark skank dancefloor action on the lean and funky minimal stepper "Lava" and look forward to making all sorts of awkward angular moves to the tribal-minded "Voice Of The Jungle". Heavyweight collaboration business, hopefully we'll be hearing a lot more from Trident Code in the near future.

Digital - "Zion" (5:57)
Digital, YT & Solo Banton - "Bad Bwoy Talk" (3:21)
Review: The mighty Digital introduces a brand new Function off-shoot Function Dubz with a focus on ragga/vocal based jungle. Naturally, it's a hefty launch release: "Zion" is straight out of 1993, all head-twisted amens, crazy-sharp edits and evocative dub vocals. "Bad Bwoy Talk" brings us back to the future on a sleazy bubbly halftime roll and full badman chats from YT and Solo Banton. A full jungle history lesson in two tunes; few artists do it like Digital.

Review: Now this is a powerful collection of talents and dons right here... OG grime MC 9er from Macabre Unit dusts off his mic to get real over some cold, cold rhythms from no-rules basssmith Nomine and jungle don Digital. The result is two tonne iceberg waiting to trickle down your ears. Stay spinning for more coldness; Slimzee & Boylan get busy with the breaks in a way only they know how, OG Macabre Unit member Nurve brings pure bassline science before Digital tags back in with DK for a solemn but jazzy trek. Concentrate.

Deaddial (6:04)
Revolution (6:02)
Review: Two stone cold dons of the game, Digital & Spirit continue to build on their new slew of collaborations with this epic two part EP. "Deaddial" is a mutant blend of Digital's "Deadline" and Spirit's "Dial-up/Redial" that fans have been asking about for what feels like dubplate eternity while "Revolution" is the Ipswich pair at their snakiest; rattled percussion, subtle soul and a lurking sense of restrained menace. Vive la revolution!

Phantom 2018 (5:43)
Small World (4:58)
Review: Ding ding, round two. Following the long-awaited "Deaddial" and "Revolution", Digital & Spirit's latest EP continues to shatter a second slab of wax. "Phantom 2018" brings their 1999 game-changing bleep hypno-hurter "Phantom Force" up to speed with a full rebuild on all the elements that punch with a perfect balance of modern weight but the classic Digital & Spirit wall of sound feel. "Small World" is a brand new construction laced with their signature fabrics. Pummelling breaks, treacle subs and a strident dubby synth hook that's tailored for 3am+ moments. No one does it like these guys.

Digital - "Uprock" (5:22)
6Blocc, Calculon & Shamanga - "Call Out" (4:20)
Fanu - "Machinedrummachine" (4:36)
Agzilla - "Tessellation" (5:08)
Review: Defrostatica's latest release features a veritable rogues gallery of new and established drum and bass talents. Chief amongst them is long-serving producer Digital, who kicks things off with the pop-gun synth-bass, intricate percussion edits and manipulated rave stabs of "Uprock". Speaking of razor-sharp, quick-fire drum edits, you'll find plenty more on the post-jungle madness of 6Blocc, Calculon and Shamanga's superb "Call Out". Turn to the flip for Fanu's fearsome "Machine Drum Machine" - think punchy D&B with added pots and pans percussion - and the hot-to-trot, early morning sub-bass pressure of Agazilla's dark and creepy "Tessellation".

Crater Face (6:01)
Force Field (5:26)
Inside The Mind (5:46)
The Shame Of Mankind (feat LJC) (4:15)
Review: Humanity's deadline soon come... Soundsystem basher and foundation junglist Digital tells it how it is with this storming four track darkness document. Covering his range in diligent, strong-arm detail each cut reminds us of our own greed-riddled mortality. "Crater Face" spits and sizzles with classic Bluenote badness, "Force Field" is space jazz from the year 2157, "Inside The Mind" is the hurricane stepper of the set while the title track takes us on one of his darkest trips of all time, all halftime and truth-mongering. Raw power from one of the scene's true dons.

From The East (5:12)
Review: The Ipswich connection runs deep as Digital returns to Commercial Suicide for two groaning system-shaking sessions with his protege Flava. As you'd expect, it's an inherently underground jungle affair. "The Test" is all about the crashing cymbals, demonic riff and air-raid urgency while "From The East" is enshrouded by big foggy coats of mystic atmospheres and hypnotic chimes. Dank, smouldering and guaranteed to prang your floor right out - save these for the darkest hours of the night.

Digital & Nomine & Theory - "No Sleep" (5:43)
Digital & Spirit vs Flava & Dissect - "Primal" (5:19)
Digital & Resound - "Shadows & Dreams" (5:35)
Digital & Sight Unseen - "On My Head" (4:34)
Review: The fourth and final chapter of Digital's fourth album Synthesis: here we find yet more titanic collaborations with creative compadres far and wide. Nomine and Theory join the Ipswich artist for some straight-up amen-slapping jungle fun, "Primal" sees Digital team up with his longest standing partner in crime Spirit for some sledgehammer dark roll business while "Shadows & Dreams" is a more contemporary jam with an acidic hook and rim shots so sharp they could cut through bone. Finally "On My Head" hurls us back down to reality with a bump as dubby textures and more head-twisting drumwork remind us why Digital is held in such esteem in the first place.

Need For Mirrors, Digital & Spirit - "Cool Vibration" (5:15)
Review: Strictly business right here: Need For Mirrors continues his most prolific year with another straight-up dancefloor jam "Acrobat". Hinting at the legacy of Die or perhaps early 2000s Zinc, there's such a timeless sense of funk to the bassline on this, it could make elderly relatives brock out. And if that's not enough, Digital & Spirit provide an equally shattering cut on the flip: "Cool Vibration" is anything but cool - dense, sweaty and relentless, it's created for soundsystems and built to last. Spotless.

The Pain
Downtown
Review: Hands up who loves Digital? Take that love and double it because this time on the legendary outsider label Ingredients he's taking us through his exceptional range of influences, picking inspiration out of the air and showing off all the exciting things drum & bass can be. "Red Tape"'s mixture of old and new vibrates happily through old dubby grooves, feeling exhilarating and familiar all at the same time. "The Pain" takes on a more experimental purposefulness, collapsing tricky, top-end percussion into deep, resonant bass. "Downtown" finishes off the trio with a look at the roots of the genre, stepping up with junglist mentality and a fresh underground sound.

Fire
Review: In 2012 PRPLX inaugurated Tempo Records, a label that's since released music from sometimes Lenzman collaborator Switch, R&S legend Pete Parsons as Voyager, and DJ Trax who's familiar to Paradox's Outsider label. Now Tempo debut Digital with a three-track dub-tinged 12" of percussive, tribal tipped drum and bass. On the one side "Logged In" is beat down and rolling, while the other is arpeggiated and laced with organic atmospheres. The title-track is where space-echoed vocals and swaths of dub chords glide across a face of bashing drums, while "Fire" is darker in tone and stripped back. Dope jams.

Glue Tune
Review: Undiluted dark style business on vinyl-only imprint Horrific... Digital is an ideal candidate for the label. And, as with anything this man has ever put to wax, it's a sure-fire smasher. "Corrupted Soul" is a subby, dubby jungle original with tightly diced breaks and unpredictable bassline gurgles. "Glue Tune" grunts with a "Terminator"-style bass hook that slaps like a sheet metal boxing glove. Nothing short of heavyweight.

Different Style
Review: If you know Drum & Bass, you know Digital & Spirit need no real introduction, but despite 20 years experience of tearing down club soundsystems and appearances on many of the seminal labels, it's quite strange the pair have never appeared on V Recordings. That anomaly is remedied here in quite rude fashion with Garrison's Law, a fine double drop done in collaboration with rising Mancunian Response. V Recordings describe both "Garrison's Law" and "Different Style" as dancefloor juggernauts, and you'll find it hard to disagree with this statement after spending some time with the previews. Proper junglist vibes aplenty on both for a record the underground selectors will love to play out for some time.

Review: 2014 has had Digital sprayed and stamped all over it... The jungle don has returned and he's done so with serious creativity and muscle. "Damage" is home to a hundred basslines, each one vying for attention over a robust, rusty breakbeat. Watch out when the classic rips and sneers drop mid-way. Carnage. Flip for a slab of modern minimal mastery as Digital reconnects with Spirit and brings dubstepper Nomine into the fold. Steppy, stark and slinky with huge dollops of dub dynamic, fans of Exit and Cosmic Bridge will be all over this.

Come Again
Review: Soul quenching jungle juice from a veritable don on the Liondubnb label. Digital continues to kick seven shades of sonic shizzle out of the year with these two unruly shakers! "Sound Bizness" is a straight up power jam, all rusty amens, tight edits and even tighter twists on the drums. "Come Again" takes us back to the hardcore era with instant-impact detuned synths, bubbling basses and a snare that slaps so hard it needs an ASBO. Heaviness.

Got Ya (5:39)
Unrest (5:22)
Review: Jungle don Digital saddles up with newcomer Response once again, this time on Klute's Commercial Suicide imprint. In the past the duo have shown us a much lighter, jazzier side with 'Slip Away', this is a much darker document. "Riot" is a steampunk bulldozer, all pistons and sheet metal utensils while "Unrest" softens the blow with rolling dub techno motifs and techniques. Elsewhere we find Digital going solo... "New Breed" rips the centrefold spread from the Metalheadz playbook with its icy moans, groans and deep sea kicks while "Got Ya" whisks us back 20 years for an objective lesson in proto jungle with rusty amens and atmospheres so thick you need a cutlass to slice through them. Disgusting.

Digital/Audio Habitat/Mad Vibes - "Maintain" (6:20)
Review: Damn, it's motherhumping Digital! The Metalheadz member and d&b pioneer makes a rare appearance in this day and age on Dispatch Recordings and he's come through as pensive as ever with his sleek and contemporary take on the jungle variety. "Red Alert" is what you'd call a 'minimal' d&b cut, while "A Message" takes a half-step groove and adds in subtle waves of breaks to the mixture. Finally, the dude teams up with Audio Habitat and Mad Vibes for "Maintain", a meditative excursion into the deepest depths of neo-jungle.

Review: Their first original material together in many, many years, "Original Rockers" shows Digital & Spirit have maintained their fingers on the pulse with futurist attention to detail. The title track rides roughshod on a mean ghetto, almost jukey groove, all chopped up and sleazy. "Redo", meanwhile, looks back to look forward - a super-charged jungle breakbeat tear-up that growls with attitude and swaggers with cymbal-splashing fervour, it reminds us why the pair were so respected in the first place.

Review: 2014 seems to serving long standing Drum & Bass producer Steve 'Digital' Carr very well so far, with the "Mini Cooper" contribution to the fourth Platinum Breakz compilation from Metalheadz complemented by a 12" for the Rupture label and now this debut for Horizons! It's not hard to see why "Figjam" is the lead track here with a knee shattering combination of razor sharp reeeses, crisp amens and heavy basslines making it a contender for moody anthem of 2014. Don't sleep on the B Side though as Digital drops a sly 23rd century stepper with hints of Detroit hi-tech jazz on "Waiting" whilst "Therapy" weighs in with a more dub-focused sound that will appeal to fans of D Bridge.

Backlash (Digital & Spirit rework)
Review: Rewind: it's destination 1999 as Digital and Spirit dust off one of their biggest cuts and let Fracture go to town on it. One of the most exciting prospects in the half-step scene, his delivery is up there with Dub Phizix in the unique stakes. This trippy, spliced, slo-mo jungle mix being no exception. Digital and Spirit themselves get in on the action with their own remix of "Backlash"; a rich tapestry of industrial riddims and deep space hooks, it's like the Blue Note all over again.

Review: Synthesis is the fourth Digital album and it might be his most ambitious undertaking yet! The album's sixteen tracks see the UK producer working alongside a swathe of high profile contemporaries. The danger with projects such as this, is the lack of cohesion and binding theme but its clear Digital conceived Synthesis as a display of all that's good in the current scene. The first in a series of 12" samplers features Digital's Phantom Audio partner Spirit prominently; the pair team up for opener "Stolen Desire" and add the mighty Om Unit into the studio mixer on the deep and deadly "Skull". Flip it over and Nomine lands a hefty blow of junglist bliss alongside Digital with "Jungle Jaw" and the Niat collaboration "War" closes it out in style.

With tight, techy drums punching through the suaveness, this totally is a seductive little number. On the other side, "Mini Cooper" shows Digital's dubby side, teaming minimal production with a big bad set of rubbery tyres. Two totally different styles, one massive release from one of the scene's biggest labels. Get involved.

Review: Here's a match made in heaven: soundsystem smasher Digital on Ray Keith's seminal jungle imprint Dread. Naturally the results are every bit as weighted, authentic and rolling as you'd expect. The key signature of "Steady Eddie" is the stuttering drums and sudden drop-outs into murky pools of distorted bass. Looking for peak-time KO track? Review: Man like Digital has been on a roll in 2015 with some fine darkside endeavours for Function, Lioncharge and Dispatch Recordings since the turn of the year. The Catch A Fire EP sees the Ipswich badman return to Timeless Recordings offshoot Function and D&B fans will be most excited to check his almighty soundclash with Manchester producer Response. But don't sleep on Digital's solo cut "Rejection" which takes a grip of the A side in dramatic fashion, laying down some classic breaks amidst a tough production that feels like an alternate take on his Phantom Audio cut "Gateman". There is a real vibrancy to the Response collaboration "Light Years" whilst "Catch A Fire" sees Digital veer off into more explicitly abstract steppers territory.

Review: An album so heavy in collaborative and sonic proportions, Digital's given us a week to recover between sessions. Part two continues the same broad-screen vein of creative form as we glide from meanie heads-down rollers ("Lost Life") to digidub halftime ("Rise") to raw tech grit ("Lightworks") before climaxing with the immense jazz swing of "Catch". Penned with Total Science, it's one of the most striking collaborations from the album due to the fact it sounds like neither party could create solo. Easily Digital's biggest project over his 25 year career, make sure you check the whole 16 track project.

Review: Phantom Audio legend Digital returns with a demonstrative reminder of his heavyweight abilities and there's a unique vibe to "Shaka Zulu". A deeply tribal affair, it punctures with a dancehall drum arrangement that gives the groove heaps of space, allowing the dramatic bass textures to rip a clear riffy message. "Archive", meanwhile, is more like the traditional Digital you'll know from time: turbo-charged breakbeat science with icy pads and a bassline that slaps your chops so hard you can lose teeth just by holding the vinyl. For real.
