Review: Just as they were likely originally intended, two of Calibre's said-to-be most coveted productions come remastered fresh from the vaults, and reissued on black vinyl via the sonic conservationists over at Signature. First comes the 2001 remix of Badmarsh & Shri's 'Signs', to which Calibre lends an extra rolling signification, its no-nonsense industrial break and tensing, two-note pads doing most of the legwork here. Review: Calibre's brand new drum & bass album Rudy comes in a minty-fresh contrapuntal breath, following hot on the heels of a new white label reissue of his earliest and most enduring works from the mid-to-late 1990s. The sudden time-warp back into the present day proves just how far he has come since then, yet also just how much he has retained what worked, too; Rudy begins in an orthodox liquid jungle fashion with the likes of 'Stunted', before breaking away into impressionistic vocal free-associations like 'The Game' (with Dominic Martin) and halftime reese-swellers like 'Heaven'. Review: Dominick Martin's Shelflife series takes us back into the very core of Calibre over the past 20 years, finally sharing tracks which were previously only aired in his DJ sets. It's testament to his rigorous approach to the music he released over that time, given how incredible some of these cuts are, but it's also a relief to finally be able to cop the likes of 'Breather', 'Home' and 'I Don't Care What U Say'. Review: The Underground EP marks Zero T's debut project on DLR's Sofa Sound Bristol. It finds the well respected jungle head and drum & bass don - who is fresh off his fourth album back in February on The North Quarter - in devastating form. The title cut is a nice and icy, stripped back and soulful cut steeped in future jazz, and 'First & Last' (with Molecular) is a tight, funky number with blasts of booming bass and fizzing synth tails. 'Only If You Want To" (with DLR)' then brings a soul vocal into the picture over slinky drums breaks while 'Jazz Tone VIP' (feat Steo & [KSR]) is another widescreen and atmospheric cut with an aching vocal placed well in the mix.

Review: Zero T's 4th album is a conceptual Drum n Bass marriage with legendary high-tech pianist ONJ, who has been on the cutting edge of music equipment for over 20 years. The 2 are returning once again for another release on The North Quarter, expanding the pair's 2 track EP 'Everyday Struggles' into a full-length project. Zero T pulls once again from Jazz influences, paired with his bright and expansive breakbeats. The amen breaks on tracks like 'Twenty Three' and 'Some Type of Way' meld with the jazz piano and saxophone riffs perfectly, broken up by lo-fi interludes, even a lounge piano portion on side D with 'Expendable'. Kilburn is an authentically British union of two polar opposite genres, and yet it just works so well. It's got to be heard to be believed.

Review: Zero T, DLR and Black Barrel all together on a super limited dubplate run from Dispatch. We don't really need to say much more about the high levels right here do we? Zero T's 'Sonic Bionic' gets the VIP boost it's always deserved while DLR tears up Black Barrel's 'Fabric' and tailors us a whole new suit. Meanwhile on the flip we're treated to some Irish/Russian fusion as 'Deep Inside' takes us to some woozy places before another VIP finishes the set and 'Fabric' gets another twist from the gun-toting, leopard-loving Black Barrel himself. What a crucial 12"!

Review: Jungle's revival remains to be of interest to fans old and new. And it is those sorts of sounds which colour this new one from Zero T and Steo, which is also well versed in silky and soulful liquid d&b styles. Particularly that is the case on opener 'Go' (feat Myth) which is a real heart wrenched with wide screen chords and a lovely heart tugging vocal. Then comes 'Can't Hide' (Visages remix) which is cavernous and a little darker before closer 'Stop/Start' has an old school feel with wooden drums and tightly coiled breaks loops.

Review: Is there a more consistently policy and famously high quality producer in all of electric music - let alone just drum & bass - that the universally respected Irishman, Calibre? The don of drums and baron of bass is by now a master of his art and the one going Shelflife series continually proves that time and time again. This seventh volume is once again jam-packed with silky rhythms, soulful sounds and meticulous craftsman ship across a wide range of tempos and moods. There are roomy steppers like 'Ready Beek' next to darker, edgier and more menacing cuts like 'Snoopy' signature emotive sounds like 'Nearly Nothing.'

Review: Finally... The vinyl has landed! Released way back in the summer digitally, Lenzman's The North Quarter are now able to drop the 12" of Zero T's dark and sleazy 'Off Broadway' EP. Focusing on those tense and spacious jazzy samples that characterised drum & bass in the mid-90s (think Peshay, think Photek), tracks like 'Drama', 'Fortune Green' and 'Off Broadway' hit with that timeless, gritty, burnt soul vibe while cuts like 'This Condition' and KILLSWSH's remix of 'She Moves' flex with more of a contemporary vibe. All of them rock and sound so much better for being on wax.

Unified by groove, diverse in sound and texture, each of the four cuts tells a different story. Review: Dominick Martin AKA Calibre has made many fine albums in his time, but even by his standards Feeling Normal - his 17th solo set - is something special. While naturally rooted in the soulful, emotive style of drum & bass that he's become renowned for, the album's 13 tracks also incorporate rhythmic and musical elements drawn from two-step garage, the sub-heavy end of UK techno, ultra-deep house, dub techno and dubstep. As a result, the vast majority of the cuts on show neatly sidestep convention, delivering hybrids that gleefully celebrate the impact of soundsystem culture on the UK bass continuum while also offering something new, fresh, melodious, hugely listenable and exceptionally entertaining.

Review: Northern Ireland's Dominick Martin, or Calibre, to the drum & bass buying public, has a reputation for bringing new angles on this well-worn sound and these two new sides of vinyl are no exceptions. The VIP version of Falls To You sees his crisp, irresistible beats doing their magic but the piano, reflective vocal and minimal electronic flourishes lend this roller a spooky, eerie quality. The flip track End of Meaning has a slightly warmer, more optimistic vibe but is still reflective, the vocals being sent through echoey dub effects for maximum atmospherics. Definitely ploughing his own furrow, as ever, Calibre demonstrates here why those in the know will always check what he's up to.

Review: Calibre aka Dominick Martin pairs up with DRS, each taking one side of this 12" and each more than holding their own. Martin continues his current obsession with the pure sound of the real piano, a powerful antidote to the more synthetic sounds we're more used to hearing in the genre. Add a supreme male vocal in plaintive mood,. declaring "I've been looking for love in all the wrong places" and you've got something that really stand out of the crowd. Living For by DRS is more of straight anthem, with reggae influences and a hip-hop vocal giving it a proper lighters-in-the-air atmosphere, its conscious lyrics very much echoing the mood of Britain in 2020. Two very different tracks, for sure, but this package is strong in its diversity.

Review: Although he's released tons of albums and singles, it's Calibre's long running "Shelflife" series that tends to get fans going the most. That's mainly because each volume contains sought-after cuts from his personal stash of productions that feature only in his DJ sets. As you'd expect, there's tons of brilliant fare to be found on volume six, which drops two years after its sold-out predecessor landed in stores. Our current favourites include the deep, warm and soulful roller "Years", the serious sub-bass pressure of the more skittish "Guide You Through", the futurist, mind-altering bass and hazy vocal samples of "Troible" and the dub-influenced weightiness of bustling deep D&B gem "Puppet". That said, all eight tracks are of the highest quality (as you'd expect given Calibre's record and reputation).

Review: The Metalheadz train shows no signs of slowing down despite being well into its third decade. This tasty four tracker comes from the combined creative minds of Zero T and Beta 2 and they come through in style with a modern-day reproduction of the vintage Metalheadz sound we all know and love. Tough drums, sprinkled with plenty of future soul and devastating bass, "Misdemeanour" in particular is prickly yet emotional stuff while "In My Head" brings a dose of joyful soul and "Dead Cert" ends on a more angsty tip.

Review: Calibre on Marky's Innerground - do we need to say any more? Once again the Belfast auteur sends us dizzy with his broad strokes across the D&B spectrum. "Typical Things" plunges us into his darker dancefloor side, similar to that of his killer "4AM" EP on 31, with a pulsating bass warp and stripped back architecture while "Simple Sa" dusts off the steel string for more of a sunset lullaby loaded with his own gilded dulcets. A match made in heaven.

Review: Calibre has been on fire this year, serving up two albums, a swathe of killer collaborations and a handful of fine solo singles. Here he rounds off 2018 in fine style with a pair of polished cuts on his own Signature Records imprint. A-side 'Taciturn" is as musically vibrant and expansive as you'd expect, with poignant piano motifs, sustained chords and breathtakingly beautiful, high register soul vocals rising above punchy breakbeats and warm but weighty bass. Flipside "Butter Love" operates along similar lines, with Calibre wrapping spacey electronics, melancholic strings and liquid synths around a snappy, bass-heavy groove. It's perhaps a little more sub-heavy than the A-side, though both tracks are equally as polished and glassy-eyed.

Review: Calibre on Digital's Function. Life doesn't get much better than this. The Belfast doyen has brought along his mate Jet Li for the ride and the results are every bit as golden as you'd expect. "Push Through It" is an immaculate string affair with that classic Signature poignancy while "Trees In The Wind" echoes with a marbled synth texture, sudden flickers of piano and yearning guitar twangs. A match made in soulful roller heaven.
