Badmarsh & Shri - "Signs" (Calibre remix) (5:46)
Calibre - "Soul 80" (6:00)
Review: Just as they were likely originally intended, two of Calibre's said-to-be most coveted productions come remastered fresh from the vaults, and reissued on black vinyl via the sonic conservationists over at Signature. First comes the 2001 remix of Badmarsh & Shri's 'Signs', to which Calibre lends an extra rolling signification, its no-nonsense industrial break and tensing, two-note pads doing most of the legwork here. Then there's the original 'Soul 80', a unique fusion of dub-delayed chipmunky vox splices, modular synth piques, and a massive, untechy breakbeat.

Review: Calibre as we all know is a machine. The man has produced thousands of records, each one as exceptional as the next, across drum & bass, house and bass music. His latest album Rudy shows no dip in quality with another a masterful display of his signature sound making it another timeless classic. Each track is a journey into his famously lush melodies, intricate rhythms, and soulful vocal touches, all of which showcasing Calibre's unmatched skill in crafting emotive drum & bass compositions. From dreamy atmospheres to the pulsating low ends, heart aching samples and driving drums, every moment captivates with its depth and keen sense of musicality.

Somethin Heavy
Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. You've heard it in the dance, now get it on repeat.

Review: Calibre's brand new drum & bass album Rudy comes in a minty-fresh contrapuntal breath, following hot on the heels of a new white label reissue of his earliest and most enduring works from the mid-to-late 1990s. The sudden time-warp back into the present day proves just how far he has come since then, yet also just how much he has retained what worked, too; Rudy begins in an orthodox liquid jungle fashion with the likes of 'Stunted', before breaking away into impressionistic vocal free-associations like 'The Game' (with Dominic Martin) and halftime reese-swellers like 'Heaven'. All the tracks originate from the same aetheric stratosphere - imagine if drum & bass had kicked off not on a terrestrial, but totally gaseous planet - yet Calibre still gleans enough variation from this potent condensate to either pack both more vacuumy punches ('Cousin') or more laid-back but cerebral inhalations ('Dumb Bum').

Review: Dominick Martin's Shelflife series takes us back into the very core of Calibre over the past 20 years, finally sharing tracks which were previously only aired in his DJ sets. It's testament to his rigorous approach to the music he released over that time, given how incredible some of these cuts are, but it's also a relief to finally be able to cop the likes of 'Breather', 'Home' and 'I Don't Care What U Say'. The range of d&b on offer here is remarkable too, from moody, heads-down tech steppers to gorgeous, soul drenched swooners, with an unerring quality which lets you know it's Calibre at the controls.

Review: While Calibre's studio albums are invariably superb, his periodic Shelflife compilations of unreleased tracks and tried-and-tested dubplates are often even better. Predictably, this fifth volume in the series not only hits the spot, but also contains some genuinely grade-A material. Many will naturally gravitate towards high-class DRS hook-up "City Life" and the sought-after Marcus Intalex collaboration "Bluesday" (a typically warm, melodious and soulful affair), but there are plenty of other highlights amongst the 12 tracks on. These largely tend towards the more sun-kissed and breezy end of the D&B spectrum, though there are some tougher and darker workouts (see the low-slung sci-fi growl of "Jaboc") amongst Calibre's waves of dancefloor positivity.

Review: The fourth instalment in the exquisitely packaged Invisible series sees more D&B royalty flexing some serious heat across two slabs of heavyweight vinyl. The rugged, stuttering Icicle remix of Noisia & Phace's "Floating Zero" shares the first slab of wax with Zero T & FD's "After All". The second 12" features the moody, stripped back riddims of Sabre, Stray & Halogenix's "Askari" and Cause4Concern's menacing "Dead Weight". Don't sleep.

Fierce & SPY - "Fury"
SPY - "Bloodshed"
Review: Considered a true stalwart of the scene, Fierce has been a long time champion of the tech influenced strain of D&B. With the excitement bubbling about his brand new "Oblivion" long player, he harks back to the heady late 90's heyday of his seminal No U Turn label on "Fury", a moody beast with choppy drums and a rumbling bottom end. Meanwhile, man of the moment SPY contributes "Bloodshed", a nasty number with a searing bassline and horror movie strings. Not for the faint hearted.

Vicious Circle & Nocturnal - "Skylark"
Review: [Quarantine] present the third in a series of vinyl samplers preceding the much awaited [Oblivion] album that pairs tech step stalwart Fierce with some of his most respected peers. This twelve opens with "Waterboard" by Optiv, a liquid propelled juggernaut that arises from the dubby ether with nasty intent, all finely sculpted drums and jagged stabs raining down on the viscous bottom end. It's a classic [Quarantine] tech roller that harks back to the 90s heyday, as does the flipside collaborative effort. "Fiend" pairs Fierce with Jubei and Vicious Circle and is a rowdy barrage of rolling breaks, expansive rhythms and driving, devious bass work.

The Void
Review: ST Files steps out of Marcus Intalex's shadow for the inaugural release on his very own Grey Audio label. Collaborating with the legendary Calibre on "Falling Down", the pair deliver a tough, unrelenting tech step monster, with razor sharp drums, spooky FX and nasty bass frequencies. Flipping the script, solo effort "The Void" rides in on a liquid tip with smooth pads and swooping strings the order of the day here. This will undoubtedly become an imprint to look out for - sheer quality all the way.

Cern, Dose & Teknik - "Huntville"
Break - "Freak"
Mindscape & Jade - "Orion"
Calibre - "Student Music"
Review: Klute's imperious Commercial Suicide proffer the third double vinyl sampler pack from the excellent label compilation CD that slipped out in the final moments of 2011. Across the 48 inches of wax present there are some exclusive and naturally heavyweight contributions from some of Commercial Suicide's finest artists with Cern, Dose & Teknik teaming up on the opening track "Huntville" with suitably explosive results - not least the nuclear strength bass line that ripples throughout menacingly. Alongside it Break goes all 25th Century tech step on the quite brilliant "Freaks" whilst "Orion" occupies similar space whilst focusing on a more grinding bassline. The ever excellent Calibre ensures that age old adage about best till last is pertinent here with the paranoid steppahs delight of "Student Music" a considered highlight.

Feedback
Review: A lucky few have been teasing drum & bass audiences with the VIP version of Fierce & Vicious Circle's 2010 collaboration "Section" for far too long, so the arrival of it on this limited vinyl pressing via Fierce's Quarantine imprint is good news! Despite the delay in release, this version has lost none of its rippling potency, all industrial strength metallic riddims angled with unrelenting pressure, darkly menacing sub growl and just the right dash of Soundclash swagger. The junglist style continues on the stupendously good rinse out that is "Feedback" housed on the B Side, a Vicious Circle cut that featured on Fierce's recent album Oblivion.

Not ones to fire out releases willy-nilly, they've toiled hard to curate an immaculate compendium that celebrates drum & bass's most timeless, enduring aspects. Over three plates we're treated to some immense cuts that will tickle all D&B DJs flavours. Break's outrageous sub session "Slipstream", Calibre's dubcentric stepper "Clipper Man" and Serum's ghetto-bang drama screamer "Vendetta" are just three of these gems. Get tuned in or go home!

Simple Emotion
Review: Put your hands up if you remember Calibre's exceptional "Steptoe" from a few years back! Deep hypnotic dub made with a D&B mindset, it resonated with true sub low funk and that unique soul the Belfast producer has always maintained. Well here's another track cut from a similar sonic cloth; "Temple Step" is like "Steptoe's" meaner, moodier brother. More spacious than a Hummer glove box, darker than a Frankie Boyle joke, this is deep and deadly material. Meanwhile on the B "Simple Emotion" takes up back up the swift, lightfooted hats and fat kicks Calibre is best known for. With a warped bass groove and dark, minimalist production approach, this is guaranteed to add great texture to your next set.

Silence
Review: Signature drop Calibre's best work to date with "Steptoe." A deft halfstepper that displays rigid programming and sumptuous bass weight, this is a subtle killer from Calibre. It has hint of jungalism and the peaceful melodies set it apart from the rest of his work. B-side "Silence" is less refined but rolls out a worthy number in itself.

Reds - "Green Lanes" (feat Tehbis & Fee Lups)
Review: After the uncertainty that has surrounded the Fabric Empire in recent months, it's heartening to see a new Fabric Live mix drop. At the controls for the fifty second edition is Dublin D&B don Zero T, with a selection that veers from the confines of junglist workouts into dubstep, house and ends with some hip-hop tinged drum and bass. It's the familiar vocals of a legendary rapper that open Zero T's mix with the bass atmospherics of Paradox's "A Certain Sound" being taken over by Jeru The Damajah's guest spot on the ruff VIP mix of "Watch Your Step" from Kabuki.
