Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. You've heard it in the dance, now get it on repeat.

Review: Calibre's brand new drum & bass album Rudy comes in a minty-fresh contrapuntal breath, following hot on the heels of a new white label reissue of his earliest and most enduring works from the mid-to-late 1990s. The sudden time-warp back into the present day proves just how far he has come since then, yet also just how much he has retained what worked, too; Rudy begins in an orthodox liquid jungle fashion with the likes of 'Stunted', before breaking away into impressionistic vocal free-associations like 'The Game' (with Dominic Martin) and halftime reese-swellers like 'Heaven'. All the tracks originate from the same aetheric stratosphere - imagine if drum & bass had kicked off not on a terrestrial, but totally gaseous planet - yet Calibre still gleans enough variation from this potent condensate to either pack both more vacuumy punches ('Cousin') or more laid-back but cerebral inhalations ('Dumb Bum').

Predictably, this fifth volume in the series not only hits the spot, but also contains some genuinely grade-A material. Many will naturally gravitate towards high-class DRS hook-up "City Life" and the sought-after Marcus Intalex collaboration "Bluesday" (a typically warm, melodious and soulful affair), but there are plenty of other highlights amongst the 12 tracks on. These largely tend towards the more sun-kissed and breezy end of the D&B spectrum, though there are some tougher and darker workouts (see the low-slung sci-fi growl of "Jaboc") amongst Calibre's waves of dancefloor positivity.

Review: Calibre on Digital's Function. Life doesn't get much better than this. The Belfast doyen has brought along his mate Jet Li for the ride and the results are every bit as golden as you'd expect. "Push Through It" is an immaculate string affair with that classic Signature poignancy while "Trees In The Wind" echoes with a marbled synth texture, sudden flickers of piano and yearning guitar twangs. A match made in soulful roller heaven.

Review: This is a heavy one; "Salvation" and "Cookie Monster" are the first Spirit tunes to be released after his tragic passing in August 2018. Created during a session with longstanding compadre Digital and mates Smithy and Quiff, both sides hit hard both sonically and poignantly. The former has Spirit's signature smashed all over it as the pads breathing deeply over the rolling breaks and bulbous subs. The former has a little more funk in the mix with an equal sound of all four dons on the track. Essential but you already knew that. RIP Duncan Busto.

Review: Calibre on Marky's Innerground - do we need to say any more? Once again the Belfast auteur sends us dizzy with his broad strokes across the D&B spectrum. "Typical Things" plunges us into his darker dancefloor side, similar to that of his killer "4AM" EP on 31, with a pulsating bass warp and stripped back architecture while "Simple Sa" dusts off the steel string for more of a sunset lullaby loaded with his own gilded dulcets. A match made in heaven.

Kicking off with a crucial new remix of their classic "Nosher" by their new hybrid gang comprising of themselves, DLR and Hydro, full breadth and variation abounds as we dip into the gilded soul of Zero T & Phase's "Talk To Me", the gnarled grizzles and dubby danger of their own "Devils Gate" with Scar member Script and the grand finale; a heavyweight purring roller from two of the most respected newcomers in the game right now: Ill Truth and SATL. Review: Shogun knows how to throw a party... Their "100" celebrations started in March and they're still going strong three months later! A chance for the label's artists and friends to stretch their skills and signatures, there's been some really exciting, subversion work throughout the series. This final piece in the puzzle is no exception; Fourward deliver their funkiest track to date, Karma gets all soulful, Total Science get all drifty and ethereal while Break simply reminds us why we love him. All four cuts glistening with long-lasting gold, Shogun can carry on celebrating their 100th release for as long as they like as far as we're concerned.

He seems to be at his best when concentrating on musicality, as the delightful "Close To Me', soulful "Wilderness" and summery "Do Not Turn On" prove. There are, of course, rawer moments (see the tech-tinged "Simple Things" and dubstep flex of "Start Again"), but these don't hit nearly as hard as his effortlessly soulful compositions.

Review: Drum & Bass legends Total Science add the Shogun Audio label to their stacked discography here, debuting in style with the double plated See Your Face EP. Longtime Total Science collaborator Riya lines the opening title track, adding a lush vocal element to a typically crisp arrangement from Smith and Greenhalgh, which contrasts nicely with the fractured Jungle abstractions of B Side ruffhouser "Hush Ya Mouth". Onto the second plate and the mood remains grizzly with the decidedly old skool business that is "Just Want You" whilst Side D sees Alix Perez turn in a remix of another Riya collaboration "Suspicious" trading the dark garage vibe of the digital only original in favour of something truly soulful.

Review: Scene stalwarts and undisputed D&B legends Total Science head over to Blackout Music for their next release, which comes in the form of "Trespass" - a tough, menacing cut with acerbic breaks, hissing hi hats sitting on top a rumbling b-line and disorientating ragga vocal sample and cooing SFX adding a touch of old skool jungle to the proceedings. Then it's over to Metalheadz's finest, Jubei, who goes in on the remix of "No Justice" with just the aplomb you would expect - sweeping synths, crackling SFX and the gnarliest Icicle-meets-Enei-esque bassline. Killer!
