Badmarsh & Shri - "Signs" (Calibre remix) (5:46)
Calibre - "Soul 80" (6:00)
Review: Just as they were likely originally intended, two of Calibre's said-to-be most coveted productions come remastered fresh from the vaults, and reissued on black vinyl via the sonic conservationists over at Signature. First comes the 2001 remix of Badmarsh & Shri's 'Signs', to which Calibre lends an extra rolling signification, its no-nonsense industrial break and tensing, two-note pads doing most of the legwork here. Then there's the original 'Soul 80', a unique fusion of dub-delayed chipmunky vox splices, modular synth piques, and a massive, untechy breakbeat.

Review: Calibre as we all know is a machine. The man has produced thousands of records, each one as exceptional as the next, across drum & bass, house and bass music. His latest album Rudy shows no dip in quality with another a masterful display of his signature sound making it another timeless classic. Each track is a journey into his famously lush melodies, intricate rhythms, and soulful vocal touches, all of which showcasing Calibre's unmatched skill in crafting emotive drum & bass compositions. From dreamy atmospheres to the pulsating low ends, heart aching samples and driving drums, every moment captivates with its depth and keen sense of musicality.

Somethin Heavy
Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. You've heard it in the dance, now get it on repeat.

Review: Dominick Martin's Shelflife series takes us back into the very core of Calibre over the past 20 years, finally sharing tracks which were previously only aired in his DJ sets. It's testament to his rigorous approach to the music he released over that time, given how incredible some of these cuts are, but it's also a relief to finally be able to cop the likes of 'Breather', 'Home' and 'I Don't Care What U Say'. The range of d&b on offer here is remarkable too, from moody, heads-down tech steppers to gorgeous, soul drenched swooners, with an unerring quality which lets you know it's Calibre at the controls.

Review: Calibre's brand new drum & bass album Rudy comes in a minty-fresh contrapuntal breath, following hot on the heels of a new white label reissue of his earliest and most enduring works from the mid-to-late 1990s. The sudden time-warp back into the present day proves just how far he has come since then, yet also just how much he has retained what worked, too; Rudy begins in an orthodox liquid jungle fashion with the likes of 'Stunted', before breaking away into impressionistic vocal free-associations like 'The Game' (with Dominic Martin) and halftime reese-swellers like 'Heaven'. All the tracks originate from the same aetheric stratosphere - imagine if drum & bass had kicked off not on a terrestrial, but totally gaseous planet - yet Calibre still gleans enough variation from this potent condensate to either pack both more vacuumy punches ('Cousin') or more laid-back but cerebral inhalations ('Dumb Bum').

Review: While Calibre's studio albums are invariably superb, his periodic Shelflife compilations of unreleased tracks and tried-and-tested dubplates are often even better. Predictably, this fifth volume in the series not only hits the spot, but also contains some genuinely grade-A material. Many will naturally gravitate towards high-class DRS hook-up "City Life" and the sought-after Marcus Intalex collaboration "Bluesday" (a typically warm, melodious and soulful affair), but there are plenty of other highlights amongst the 12 tracks on. These largely tend towards the more sun-kissed and breezy end of the D&B spectrum, though there are some tougher and darker workouts (see the low-slung sci-fi growl of "Jaboc") amongst Calibre's waves of dancefloor positivity.

Review: Calibre has been on fire this year, serving up two albums, a swathe of killer collaborations and a handful of fine solo singles. Here he rounds off 2018 in fine style with a pair of polished cuts on his own Signature Records imprint. A-side 'Taciturn" is as musically vibrant and expansive as you'd expect, with poignant piano motifs, sustained chords and breathtakingly beautiful, high register soul vocals rising above punchy breakbeats and warm but weighty bass. Flipside "Butter Love" operates along similar lines, with Calibre wrapping spacey electronics, melancholic strings and liquid synths around a snappy, bass-heavy groove. It's perhaps a little more sub-heavy than the A-side, though both tracks are equally as polished and glassy-eyed.

These four tracks alone are perfect examples; Villem adds a little mystic touch to last year's collab with Quardran & Iris "False Alarm", Critical Impact bring the iconic smoky tones of Jakes to the blend with the heads-down "Geeks & Geez", the boys themselves take us for a heart-eyed trip down liquid lane on "What I Need" while Arcatype continues the dreamweaving right the way through the last B-side groove with the soulful swoons of "Cascade". 21 gun salute!

Review: Majestic album from Calibre, who has long been heralded as a genius in D&B circles. His sixth studio album does nothing to dispel this belief and signals a return to his early noughties heyday when he knocked out sublime and understated but fully formed musical gems for fun. "Condition" has a slightly sunnier disposition than his 2010 long player Even If, but still retains the beautifully melancholic touch that has become Calibre's trademark. Standout tracks "Who's Singing" and "Mirage" are both haunting lessons in liquid and the tougher edged "Garbage Man" and "Schlager" are built for maximum impact. A must have.

Review: One of Break's most consistent and striking vocal collaborators, Kyo gets the Symmetry spotlight with this A-list collabo EP. "Who Decides" sparks up the dance with an electrified high voltage sneering bassline and loose percussion that only Break can cook up. "Murder Tonight" is a lot sexier than its title suggests thanks to Kyo's surging tones and Total Science's expert manipulation of the think break. "Where I Stand" sees Kyo teaming up with Mikal for the most stripped back and steppy affair while DLR and Mako's OneMind unit join her for the final, and darkest, chapter of the EP "Play To Lose" where Kyo hits her gutsiest, rawest soul notes. No decision necessary.

The Belfast doyen has brought along his mate Jet Li for the ride and the results are every bit as golden as you'd expect. "Push Through It" is an immaculate string affair with that classic Signature poignancy while "Trees In The Wind" echoes with a marbled synth texture, sudden flickers of piano and yearning guitar twangs. Review: Calibre has always displayed an affinity for sounds beyond the confines of drum & bass, but he's never gone as far out as he does on his latest album, "Planet Hearth". Leaving the club behind altogether, he's brought piano-led composition front and centre, folded in an ample dose of ambient and struck upon a cosy Autumnal mood that feels perfect for the time of year. There are still beats to be heard here and there, but this is a personal expression first and foremost. There's a catchy pop tint to "Eratik" while the title track is more concerned with minimalist composition and cathedral reverbs - that's the kind of range he's exploring on this accomplished departure from his usual comfort zone.

Review: One look at who's involved here should raise any drum and bass head's eyebrows. All genre A-listers, it's one of those release schedule entries that's guaranteed to get everyone excited, and thankfully the pudding is just as tasty as those ingredients. Break & Kyo lead the charge with 'Past North', a summertime anthem-in-the-making opening on acoustic guitar chords that wouldn't sound weird on a Me One record. Definitely one for festivals, boxfresh percussion ensures it fully fires off once the poppier elements temporarily subside. That said, DJ Marky's 'Hard Hands' trumps it for crisp drum work, delivering some typically exotic vibes. Ill Truth and Satl's 'In Your Soul', or at least its Lenzman remix, keeps the sexy and smooth warmth alive, with '3 Way' closing out on a dub-influenced tip courtesy of Total Science and FD.

Review: It's by Calibre and it has balls in the title... Does any more need to be said? Not really, but credit where it's due - no artist comes close in consistency, proliferation and out-and-out distinctive style than Calibre. Here he is in "Posh Boy" mode - all sizzling in the bass and hazy in the chords - "Iron Balls" is nasty but restrained, cruel but kind, furious but funk. "Angel Breach" takes us even deeper into Calibre's darker side with a ricochet drum set and bassline that ploughs deeper and deeper into the abyss. There's no mucking around here - just up dark style Calibre.

And with its dreamy cosmic synths, surging vocal and classic snare rolling jungle break, we know whose orders we're going to believe. The fun doesn't stop there as the all star cast continues... Break joins the party for the bone-rattling Headzy tear-up "Big Time Winners", Calibre jumps on the remix tip with a delicate lilting twist on the Riya-fronted "Walk The Same Lines" and DLR taps in for the heads-down, purring-sub stepper "Too Close For Comfort". Review: When it comes to making drum and bass that strikes a balance between the needs of DJs and home listeners, few are better than Dominick Martin AKA Calibre. It's for this reason that the album format suits him so well. The Deep, his 12th full-length in total, could well be his best set yet. Jam-packed with effortlessly soulful moments, evocative piano flourishes, rich live instrumentation and yearning vocals, it's a far more expansive and ambitious set than most D&B albums. It also supplements his trademark, club-ready rollers with tracks that look to modern soul, jazz breaks, dub and R&B for inspiration. Throughout, Martin barely puts a foot wrong, delivering a set that more than stands up to repeat listens.

Review: This is a heavy one; "Salvation" and "Cookie Monster" are the first Spirit tunes to be released after his tragic passing in August 2018. Created during a session with longstanding compadre Digital and mates Smithy and Quiff, both sides hit hard both sonically and poignantly. The former has Spirit's signature smashed all over it as the pads breathing deeply over the rolling breaks and bulbous subs. The former has a little more funk in the mix with an equal sound of all four dons on the track. Essential but you already knew that. RIP Duncan Busto.

Ed:It and Pennygiles's 2014 firecracker gets the treatment from Ulterior Motive, adding just a lick or two of shade to the already solid groove. ST Files and Response follow with a beautifully restrained deep stepper that's not dissimilar to erstwhile ST collaborator Marcus Intalex. In that time he's hammered hard across Metalheadz, Commercial Suicide, Fokuz and Renegade Hardware with his trademark twistedness keeping us on our toes from release to release. And our toes aren't set to rest any time soon... "Marching Machines" lives up to its name with a deep droning bass and a really cool Nicholson sample. It's backed by two major collaborations: with DLR he goes all heads-down, gritty and mildly tribal on "Affliction" while with Total Science he goes all bouncy and funky with "Forward Motion".

As with previous editions, the whole collection rolls like an album due to his consistent, spacious signature. Highlights: How about every track? You need specifics? The piano-slapping sunny-side opener "Latin Way", the big jazzy washes and lolloping rolls on "Model Way", the pushy, gritty breaks on "Spirit Catcher", the wriggling drums, stark minimalism and mid 2000s techno feel to the hook on "Underfire". We could go on and on. It's Calibre - you know what to do.

Soul For Sale (5:57)
Contraband (5:15)
Review: One of the most consistent production outfits across D&B's 25 year spectrum, Total Science pay homage to the most crucialist of crucial eras: Blue Note. The lead track takes us right back to the mid-'90s with cavernous space and sheet metal scrapping textures. "Soul For Sale" is a jazzier jaunt with spasmodic synth flurries and a two-step so sharp you'll lose your lobes. "Contraband" weaves such strong drum magic you could be convinced you've gone 20 years back in time while "All Massive" is a straight-up heads-down affair. Noteworthy.

Dream Of You (5:32)
Review: After a stupendously prolific 2013 and 2014 (wherein he delivered no less than four albums), Calibre appears to have taken his foot off the gas and slipped into a more comfortable release-rate. Following his "Strumpet" EP on Exit comes this ace four-tracker that represents all his drum & bass styles: "Boogeyman Bullshit" is Dominick Martin at his darkest and most mischievous, all wobbly bass and slippery. "Smother" (featuring long term compadre Marcus Intalex) slaps with big washy chords that chime with an almost Detroitian hypnotic affect, "Multi Tasking" is a swam of sonic bees that have set up a nest in Metalheadz HQ circa 1997 and show no sign of budging. Finally, with its twinkling arpeggios and major chords "Dream Of You" is Calibre at his dreamiest and most emotional... Then drop comes and, once again, his sub bass melts your cones. Immaculate.

Review: One of the most prolific and consistent men in drum & bass, Calibre returns to Total Science's CIA with a quartet of golden rollers: "Another" hums with silky subs and perfectly positioned vocal echoes, "Posh Boy" reminds us of Calibre's darker underbelly as alien bass tears squiggle and sneer over crisp two-steps, "Dreamz Dub" opens up with beautiful strings and distant horns before switching into an immense classic jungle retrospective while "Believe It" closes the show with another simple vocal sample that wraps itself around his lean skippy beats. Perfect.

Review: Drum & bass's most unique gentleman Calibre plunders his vaults to compile a new collection of unreleased gems through the ages. As you'd expect, the end result is a timeless assault of lush grooves, soulful sonics and sweet skippy riddims. From the soft jazz insistency of "Honey Dew" to the hollowed harrowed bass tones of "Bellamee" via the harder, rave-referencing "Sagan" and the deep bass gurgles and DRS's reggae-style vocals on "Eschaton", the only issue here is the fact Calibre hasn't released them sooner. Unarguably incredible.

Review: Given his status as one of drum and bass's true heavyweights; you'd expect this eighth Calibre full-length to be one of the most hotly anticipated jungle sets of the year. Certainly, it's a fine effort, packed with emotion-rich atmospherics, fizzing rhythms and intricate, occasional beautiful, musical touches. He seems to be at his best when concentrating on musicality, as the delightful "Close To Me', soulful "Wilderness" and summery "Do Not Turn On" prove. There are, of course, rawer moments (see the tech-tinged "Simple Things" and dubstep flex of "Start Again"), but these don't hit nearly as hard as his effortlessly soulful compositions.

Review: Drum & Bass legends Total Science add the Shogun Audio label to their stacked discography here, debuting in style with the double plated See Your Face EP. Longtime Total Science collaborator Riya lines the opening title track, adding a lush vocal element to a typically crisp arrangement from Smith and Greenhalgh, which contrasts nicely with the fractured Jungle abstractions of B Side ruffhouser "Hush Ya Mouth". Onto the second plate and the mood remains grizzly with the decidedly old skool business that is "Just Want You" whilst Side D sees Alix Perez turn in a remix of another Riya collaboration "Suspicious" trading the dark garage vibe of the digital only original in favour of something truly soulful.

Review: Remix alert! Zero T's been given the keys to Total Science's 2002 stonker "Lightweight" and he's nailed it with distinction... Where once the percussion was the main attraction, Zero's taken the bubbling bassline and made it much juicier and warpish. Adding a whole layer of additional FX and sounds, it's the perfect complement. Meanwhile on the B Mutated Forms add just a teensy bit more welly to their already walloping "Best Served Cold". Heaviness.

Review: Calibre has always been one of the more thoughtful members of the drum & bass fraternity, with a passion not just for rumbling rhythms, but also pleasing musicality. It's these two sonic traits that come to the fore on FabricLive 68, his first contribution to the London super club's long running mix series. While there are plenty of sublime moments punctuated by punchy percussion, it's the more fluid, musically complex tracks that stand out (see the twinkling pianos of DRS's "Keep The Faith", Marky & SPY's carnival-tastic "Yellow Shoes (Calibre Remix)" and Zero's "Inner City Life"-ish "Refusal"). As a result, FabricLive 68 is a loose, languid journey through D&B's greener pastures.

Review: Calibre on Exit... Need we say more? Four tracks deep, each one as subtle and classy as you'd expect. "Strumpet" balances swooning somnambulant strings, distant harmonies and a bumping bass that billows with the perfect amount of gruff. "Stranger" is a sharper, steppier blend with metallic twists to the undulating subs, "The Sweet" is all about the rhythm thanks to insistent percussive jungle shakers and a drum dynamic that switches from lean to mean at the drop of a snare. Finally we hit "Concrete". The hardest track of the pack; here we find Calibre in a more unrelenting mood as an array of bass tones ebb and flow over a thicker, more robust rhythm. The clue's in the title... Calibre is indeed a sonic strumpet of highest order.

Review: Dominick Martin AKA Calibre has made many fine albums in his time, but even by his standards Feeling Normal - his 17th solo set - is something special. While naturally rooted in the soulful, emotive style of drum & bass that he's become renowned for, the album's 13 tracks also incorporate rhythmic and musical elements drawn from two-step garage, the sub-heavy end of UK techno, ultra-deep house, dub techno and dubstep. As a result, the vast majority of the cuts on show neatly sidestep convention, delivering hybrids that gleefully celebrate the impact of soundsystem culture on the UK bass continuum while also offering something new, fresh, melodious, hugely listenable and exceptionally entertaining.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

One look at who's involved here should raise any drum and bass head's eyebrows.

Review: Northern Ireland's Dominick Martin, or Calibre, to the drum & bass buying public, has a reputation for bringing new angles on this well-worn sound and these two new sides of vinyl are no exceptions. The VIP version of Falls To You sees his crisp, irresistible beats doing their magic but the piano, reflective vocal and minimal electronic flourishes lend this roller a spooky, eerie quality. The flip track End of Meaning has a slightly warmer, more optimistic vibe but is still reflective, the vocals being sent through echoey dub effects for maximum atmospherics. Definitely ploughing his own furrow, as ever, Calibre demonstrates here why those in the know will always check what he's up to.

Living For (5:44)
Review: Calibre aka Dominick Martin pairs up with DRS, each taking one side of this 12" and each more than holding their own. Martin continues his current obsession with the pure sound of the real piano, a powerful antidote to the more synthetic sounds we're more used to hearing in the genre. Add a supreme male vocal in plaintive mood,. declaring "I've been looking for love in all the wrong places" and you've got something that really stand out of the crowd. Living For by DRS is more of straight anthem, with reggae influences and a hip-hop vocal giving it a proper lighters-in-the-air atmosphere, its conscious lyrics very much echoing the mood of Britain in 2020. Two very different tracks, for sure, but this package is strong in its diversity.

Review: Blimey CIA aren't messing around with these remixes. Two big tunes from two very different ages both get serious treatment right here; label bosses Total Science give the parts to their 2003 bongo roller 'Lightweight' to the mighty maestro Break for some frankly ludicrous level-upping while on the flip we find Phaction's breakthrough track from 2017 'I Have You' getting rubbed up in all the right ways by men-of-the-moment Ill Truth. Maintaining the jazz and soul of the original while giving it a little extra 2020 beef, it's another superb remix execution. We expect nothing less from CIA.

Review: Although he's released tons of albums and singles, it's Calibre's long running "Shelflife" series that tends to get fans going the most. That's mainly because each volume contains sought-after cuts from his personal stash of productions that feature only in his DJ sets. As you'd expect, there's tons of brilliant fare to be found on volume six, which drops two years after its sold-out predecessor landed in stores. Our current favourites include the deep, warm and soulful roller "Years", the serious sub-bass pressure of the more skittish "Guide You Through", the futurist, mind-altering bass and hazy vocal samples of "Troible" and the dub-influenced weightiness of bustling deep D&B gem "Puppet". That said, all eight tracks are of the highest quality (as you'd expect given Calibre's record and reputation).

On the A side of this 12", they're rolling low and nasty with the hardcore stylings of 'Universe 92'. It's a new production, but it sports the gnarly stylings of a vintage track in every possible way. Meanwhile they turn to a classic on the flip, offering up a remastered version of early 00s roller 'Jungle Jungle' which is in fact more of a sharp-shooting D&B masterclass that's been out of print for far too long.
