Jungle Classics EP
Cat: APH 68. Rel: 24 Mar 22

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Style From The Darkside (6:11)
Navigator (95 Lick) (6:08)
Bomber (6:57)
Basslights (6:01)
Review: Buckle up for this one because Aphrodite Recordings serves up four stone-wall jungle classics from the eponymous Aphrodite. First up is 'Style From The Darkside' with its crunchy drums and darkened bass powering onwards. 'Navigator' is then a silky trip with a flurry of snares and some heavenly melodies helloing up top while dirty bass does its thing down low. On the reverse is the face-melting and unrelenting 'Bomber' which will rattle ribs and walls and last of all 'Basslights' comes on strong with stepping rhythms and elastic bass.

Bad Ass (12")
Cat: URTAKE 055. Rel: 04 Jan 12

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Bad Ass (Slum Dogz remix)
Bad Ass (Serial Killaz remix)
Review: Those of a particular vintage will remember well the jump up sounds of Mickey Finn and Aphrodite which found particular favour with Mary Anne Hobbs in the early days of her Breezeblock show. Released in 1996, "Bad Ass" was perhaps the most ubiquitous track from the duo and its dragged all the way into the 21st Century thanks to this pair of remixes from perennial red liners Slum Dogz and Serial Killaz. As you'd expect when Doctor P is involved, the Slum Dogz effort is caked in epicness, successfully balancing their own distinct production touches with elements of the original. The Serial Killaz effort takes an industrial approach with equally screw face inducing results.

Aladdin (remastered)
Cat: APH 69. Rel: 17 Nov 22

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Mash Up You Know (6:40)
So Good (5:58)
We Enter (Heavenly remix) (6:25)
Geni (Lost In Zanzibar) (5:48)
Review: Welsh jungle legend Aphrodite had a momentary sideline working with QED on the Aladdin project, and it yielded some truly legendary material. Now he's gathered some of the best joints together on this 12", buffed up with a fresh pressing which sounds positively compared to an OG copy getting on for 30 years old. First up you get the iconic 'Mash Up You Know' with its classic double bass drop, and then we slam straight into moody roller 'So Good'. 'We Enter (Heavenly Remix)' is another stone cold classic full of deft break edits, and then 'Geni (Lost In Zanzibar)' edges towards a techier sound which hints at the direction Aphrodite would head in as the 90s wore on. This is quite simply high grade stuff that's been out of print for too long.

Raw Motion (reissue)
Cat: RAPH 001. Rel: 23 Jun 20

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Raw Motion (5:23)
Dub Motion (5:05)
Review: Here's a piece of history right here; Aphrodite goes back to his first ever release. Fresh from 92, both sitting in the hardcore breakbeat chapter of the UK rave explosion, "Raw Motion" has a big beat hip-hop energy to it while "Dub Motion" is a full-on bongo roller with dreamy detuned rave sprinkles and a vibe still set to max 28 years later. Firm foundations.
