Waveform 05 (5:32)
Waveform 06 (5:27)
Review: Waveforms is as a brand-new label from ASC and Presha who are already well known and respected for their work with Spatial/Auxiliary and Samurai Music. It's a new outlet that will specially tap into the sounds of 90s jungle and serve up new tunes on 10". Tim Reaper has been behind one, and Eusebeia is now on this one on blue-marbled vinyl. A-side cut 'Waveform 05' is a cavernous cut with pulsing bass and spine chillingly ethereal vocals up top while 'Waveform 06' keeps the pressure on with more throwback jungle realness and unrelenting breakbeat pressure.

Review: Waveforms is a brand new label spearheaded by ASC and Presha who the already revered minds behind Spatial/Auxiliary and Samurai Music respectively. They say they are on a mission to dive deep into the menacing world of early 90s jungle and cook up tunes reminiscent of that era and then serve them up lovely slabs of 10" wax. And right from the off the man who never misses, Tim Reaper, transports us back to the driving breakbeats and raw energy of that time with a pair of tunes that layer up a flurry of snares and booming low ends with wiry synths the sense of futurism that still holds true to this day. Sure to captivate old-school heads and new listeners alike.

Review: Pixel and Mystic Pulse join the Rasta Vibez crew for some skunk-skanked jungle fun. First up is a storming rifle-flex twist on Pato Banton's fun-but-firm statement on herbal legalities. Complementing his rapid fire chats with equally thundering amens, it's got reload written into every red groove. Flip for more smoky sonic sermons as they take on another spark-up standard "Herbalist" with such authenticity you could easily be convinced it's 1992 again... Especially if you've practiced the lyrical content so much you think time travel is a thing. Pure Vibez.

Review: Get unstuck with these two delicious refixes from Unglued's debut 2021 album Interplanetary Radio as two of the most highly respected beat carvers apply their scalpels to one of Hospital's most exciting new-generation stars. The ravey 'Total XTC' is perfect fodder for Exit's Fixate as he winds up the 4x4s and laces it with his own special hardcore essence. The super sweet soul of 'Way Back When' is also a perfect fit for its remixer as Halogenix brings a whole new hazy shade to the dreamy vibes. Far out.

Review: Sir Hiss and 4AM Kru set up a dialogue between London and Bristol, a stellar dialectic giving rise to a supreme form of lo-fi jungle. 'Earshots' samples a bhangra vocal cry, mixing it up with the scratchy factory movements of cut-throat jungular breaks. It marks a break from Sir Hiss' usual grime parlance, and adds to a refreshingly-named new series handled by their parent label Embrace The Real, called 'No More Mailouts', an explicit callout of PR in the electronic music industry which aims to lead by example. Review: DJ Solo's stone-cold classic tune 'Darkage' was remixed masterfully by DMS and now the original EP gets a direct, limited edition repress on 10". The tunes have both been remastered for the job and both sound as good now as ever. A-side gem 'Darkage' (DMS remix) is awash with trippy and psychedelic melodic patterns with a pitched-up and soulful vocal that brings the standout element to really make it bang. 'Axis' (DMS remix) then has a similar mix of hardcore and soulful vocals over crispy drum breaks and rave pianos for all out dance floor euphoria.

Review: There's seemingly no end to ASC's offerings to the drum & bass world and so it continues on this beautifully packaged black splattered yellow 10" from the Waveforms series. 'Waveform 03' is an airy jungle excursion with explosive amens set off against vast expanses of pads, while 'Waveform 04' locks into a sleeker, techier approach where the icy atmospherics have more space to stretch out. No one is even close to the quality and quantity of ASC, and this is yet another essential addition to his huge legacy.

Review: ASC's Waveforms series is yet another outlet for one of the most prolific producers in any genre you care to mention. For the completists it's hard work keeping up, but how are you going to argue with tracks as fire as these? 'Waveform 01' has a lighter feel thanks to the aqueous synth tones slipping and sliding around the crisp breaks, but it still kicks off in earnest when the amens come knocking. 'Waveform 02' is a more heads down affair, but as always ASC creates scintillating atmospheres around the drums which make the listening experience that much deeper.

Renegade Horns (Nookie remix) (6:35)
New Horizons (DJ Crystl remix) (8:32)
Review: Two of drum & bass' most rabid underdogs, Nookie and DJ Crystl, the latter returning only recently after a two decade hiatus - make a triumphant return to the foreground, joining Suburban Architecture in aid of the third edition of their Architecture Dubs series. A fresh fusion of old and new motifs, Nookie's remix of 'Renegade Horns' pays homage to a select juncture in the genre's evolution, recalling the era of "intelligent" drum & bass while nonetheless playing into the freshness and cleanliness that could only ever have surfaced after the 2010s. Crystl's version of 'New Horizons', meanwhile, is more refractive and dreamy, taking its required time to bask in its artisanal padwork, in contrast to its raw b-boy sample and frank Amen breaks.

A singular 10" record houses these twin audio-imps, with the titular 'Triple Menace' occupying older-skool junglist territories, and the latter bringing things forward in time to a future-soundsy rave minimalizer.

Review: The latest drop in the Mysticisms Dubplate series welcomes back Persian for another round of reggae-inspired electronics. Once again the artist draws from across a spectrum of bass, digidub and breaks and also throws some jungle into the melting pot. Opener 'Survival Dub' is powered by classic breakbeats and great mic work that is sure to liven up any party. 'Smoke Mari' then slows it down to a fat dub with a vocal sample from a well-known smoker's anthem with plenty of mind-melting effects and stepping rhythms. On the flipside is 'There Is No Love' with a prime junglist drop and last of all comes 'Zatoichi's Troubles' which has devastating bass.

It's a high energy affair that might well raise some eye brows given the vocal, but you can't help but admire it's all out joyousness and air of celebration. Review: Now for something completely different! Forever ahead of the game, Hidden Agenda's role in leftfield jungle soul has been undeniable and hugely influential since the mid-90s and it's amazing to see Jason back now and on such a maverick edge. Both of these cuts hit with a unique vibe and flavour that's so refreshing to hear. 'Dust' is a psychedelic wonderland that slides along with shimmering layers of percussion, guitar and keys. 'Cruel Sea' takes things a little darker as an edgy, unpredictable drive takes the lead. Think Krust's recent work on Crosstown Rebels and you're on the right planet. AKO Beatz never miss a punch.

Originally available on the label's Bandcamp site, now the first volume is pressed up on 10" for some deck-based air time. 'Tears (Fantazia Version)' on the A-side leads with a sad-eyed r&b sample and some lingering piano, but when the drop comes its pure Reese power with a slant towards d&b rather than the jungle DMC's more commonly associated with. 'Rinsa' on the flip is a rowdy slice of Mentasm trickery - the perfect counterpoint to the lead track's solemn vibe.

Review: There's no denying the quality (or quantity, for that matter) of Tim Reaper's mid-90s style jungle workouts. His bounding, floor-friendly cuts have been everywhere in 2018, or at least a dizzying array of retro-futurist record labels. Here he provides more quality dancefloor ammunition, with four fine cuts stretched across a dubplate style ten-inch double-pack. Highlights include the intoxicating skank of "The General", where hazy toaster vocal samples and jumpy reggae riffs ride heavy dub bass and skittish jungle beats, the all-out sub-bass assault of "The Walls of Jericho" (another dub-powered peak-time blinder) and the slowly building jungle dub madness of closing cut "Jarreau Dub", which includes some seriously snare-heavy drums.

Here the on point label and artist collide for two jungle insurgencies; "Switch" lulls us into a false sense of atmospheric security before throwing us to the breakbeat lions while "Sorrow" is much more of a slow burner that raises tension much more gradually by way of loose jazz drum layers and ice cold pads.

He has had previous releases on the likes of Brotherhood Sound System, Tessier-Ashpool and Durkle Disco. It is a rowdy concoction of breaks and smack-to-the-jaw bass. Whiney is first and layers in some devastating bass to BCee's 'Sincerely Yours', which repurposes it as a heavyweight peak time flex banger. With the backing of Stretch, on his fast-developing 10" label AKO 10, this is one of the biggest moves yet. The music itself brims with quality: "Track 1" is a real roller, with a haunting top line that could be an oboe for the way it drifts so enchantingly up top. The drums are clean and crisp, with diffuse synths bringing warmth and soul to this deepest and dopest of tracks. "Track 2" is more aggy with its rattling fills and hardcore drum breaks bringing a more menacing feel to the dance floor. Review: He's not alone in flying the flag for revivalist '90s jungle flavours, but few D&B retro-futurists are quite as prolific as Coco Bryce. We've lost count of the number of releases he's had this year, though we do remember that they all contain some seriously potent material. That's the case with this two-tracker, too. "Gunna", for example, is an Amen-powered nu-jungle roller whose warm chords, cut-up vocal samples and mid-90s synth stabs recall the early days of UK garage. "A New Mind", meanwhile, revolves around a punchier, more stop-start break and relentless, elongated sub-bass tones. This bottom end pressure provides a perfect platform for the producer's musical elements to sparkle, namely a suitably cosmic vocal and some proto-liquid synthesizer sounds.

Created during a session with longstanding compadre Digital and mates Smithy and Quiff, both sides hit hard both sonically and poignantly. The former has Spirit's signature smashed all over it as the pads breathing deeply over the rolling breaks and bulbous subs. Powerful chords, minimal dynamics and an emphatic vocal that seeps genuine sentiment, it's strong enough to get the biggest non-smokers in the dance raising lighters they didn't even know they had. For added guts flip for Breakage's very own VIP. Old school breakbeats a-go-go; this will slice a roof clean off any venue on the planet. Massive.

Joker (with Spirit & Nomine)
Review: 2014 has had Digital sprayed and stamped all over it... The jungle don has returned and he's done so with serious creativity and muscle. "Damage" is home to a hundred basslines, each one vying for attention over a robust, rusty breakbeat. Watch out when the classic rips and sneers drop mid-way. Carnage. Flip for a slab of modern minimal mastery as Digital reconnects with Spirit and brings dubstepper Nomine into the fold. Steppy, stark and slinky with huge dollops of dub dynamic, fans of Exit and Cosmic Bridge will be all over this.

DLR - "Pain"
Hydro, War & Mateba - "Entropy"
Review: Following "Issue One" in September, Veil returns with another collection of wildly future-focussed creations. Sam KDC goes all techno with "Ascetic". Double kicks a go-go, it's the genre at its funkiest. ASC, meanwhile, sets phasers to stun with his startling slow breakbeat number that tips a nod to the early prog chapters. For serious sonic sickness head for "Trapped Within The Circuit", a muffled lo-fi paranoia jam that sounds like a really early Chemical Brothers track that been rusting in acid for the last 20 years. Method One completes the set with the trembling, emotional "Under The Same Stars". Quintessential electronica.

Running Cold (Roni Size remix)
Review: Taken from Swindle's incredible, truly unique album Long Live The Jazz album, "Running Cold" sits somewhere between Parliament and Bugz In The Attic. Soulful, cheeky, funky, it ticks every single box. Fittingly, Deep Medi have turned to a pioneering producer for the remix: Roni Size. Naturally the genre-shaping Bristolian has delivered with a mindblowing rub. Boasting about four different grooves, he switches from classic Full Cycle bass thumps to full vocal sexiness via contemporary glitches with ease and mischievous creativity. A non-stop riot presented with class, as you'd expect from Deep Medi, Size or Swindle.

Emperor - "Control"
Review: 2014 sees Kasra's Critical Music reach its twelfth year of serving up crucial future thinking drum and bass for the heads and the hips, and the label are opening proceedings for a landmark year in requisite fashion. The 19 track Underground Sonics label compilation is out later this month across various formats and features contributions from Noisia, Dub Phizix, Enei, Phace, Sam Binga and Kasra himself. This 12" sampler is a nice vinyl shaped taster for that compilation and long term Critical Music fans will be pleased to see the Kasra and Enei collaboration "Breath" sitting on the A Side, with the track a long time request for release! Down below Emperor drops the pressure with the low riding roller "Control".

Review: Special Spearhead off-shoot SIDE revisits S.P.Y's 2010 classic with two stunning modernisation. Keeno & Whiney emphasis the cinematic drama and string-surged soul of the original, allowing the vocal to remain full focus. Hybrid Minds, meanwhile, add a great old school subby texture to the blend. Chopping up the vocal neatly and laying it softly over an energetic skippy breakbeat, it's Hybrid Minds at their heaviest and most driving. Make sure this record is by your side at all times.

Break 'Em
Review: After shattering the world's dancefloors on Civil Music, Reso returns to Hospital with four more incredible journeys to the furthest realms of the bass cosmos. "Sprite City" is 100 per cent drama as we ride the crest of the Hudmo synth rainbow well into the next century. "Unexist", meanwhile, flips back to the mid 90s D&B jungle heyday thanks to its sharp two-step rhythm and Metalheadz-style tears and sneers. Elsewhere "Pulse Code" jitters with footwork flavoured funk and "Break Em" hits hard with a sizzling glitch hop groove. Four contrasting jams all packed together with muscular production consistency, Reso has smashed this well and truly out of the Hospital parking lot. Essential!

Artificial Intelligence - "Warhosre" (feat DRS)
Loxy & Resound - "Paradigms"
Review: Has it really been over ten years since the last Platinum Breakz compilation? Ahead of Metalheadz dropping Vol 4 of the most revered compilation series in Drum & Bass, a second two track sampler arrives to further whet appetites - as if that needs to happen - with cuts from Artificial Intelligence and DRS and the Rufige pair of Loxy and Resound. Glenn and Zula sound on inspired form with "Warhorse" a powerful, snarling steppers anthem that's made all the more venomous thanks to DRS's vocal contribution. Face down, Loxy & Resound rep the Rufige sound and indulge in some vintage Metalheadz flavours on "Paradigms" which is pitched perfectly between elements of darkness (Reese drops, mangled breakbeats) and light (haunting vocal harmonies and swirling synths).

Lemonade
Review: The Dispatch LTD series continues to go from strength to strength, with their fifteenth offering featuring Dispatch debuts for Kolectiv, Dexta and Mauoq. Both tracks here demonstrate the Kolectiv trio, Dexta and Mauoq are more than suited to the Dispatch label and there's an auspicious sense of studio chemistry at play throughout that we hope will lead to more of these collaborative productions. Both "Human Sacrifice" and "Lemonade" work from a stripped back rhythmic framework, and the space allows them to really show off their skills for crafting walls of sound loaded with atmosphere - the taut steppers vibe of the latter just shades it for us.

Say What You Want (feat Amanda Seal)
Review: Two stunning slabs of sub gold from Luton trio DBR UK. "Paranoia" lives up to its name; dark, creepy and ominous, the subs ooze menace as slippery lead lines play games like random noises echoing upside your head when you're walking through a dodge area late at night. For many, though, this release is all about the startling star-gazing soul of the B-side "Say What You Want". The beats skip, the synths swoon and the bass has heaps of spacious to stutter and gurgle as Amanda Seal lays down some sensuous vocal magic. As DBR continue to gather momentum, this will be seen as a career-shaping release. Guaranteed!

Review: Sam KDC seems like a perfect fit for the Samurai Red Seal label, the UK producer having previously proved himself more than capable of crafting finely judged atmospheric soundscapes for exemplary labels such as Auxiliary and Nu Directions. Between Dreams is a natural progression for KDC, with Samurai Red Seal granting him the freedom to burrow deeper into elegant and emotive layers of sound, with the title track an all too woozy and intoxicating blend of blissful textures and contemplative moments. "Downpour" introduces an element of darkness and could quite easily be mistaken for one of Demdike Stare's more rhythmically driven moments. Superb.

Skeptical & Dub Phizix - "Lastik"
Halogenix - "Raya"
Review: What a trio! Each one of the players involved in this EP has had a storming year so far... And this cute little Dispatch 10 incher is only going to bolster their presence as impeccable emerging artists. There's a great balance across the release, too, with both tunes countering each other with true style. Skeptical & Dub Phizix's "Lastik" is a raw, metallic stepper that glistens with early tech step charm. Meanwhile Halogenix adds balance with more full-bodied, atmospheric number. With icy pads, glitches and a resounding bass technique, it's the perfect foil for the grimier antics on the A.

Review: Prolific Parisian producer Naibu has a history of experimentation. This double ten inch pack culls four productions from his recent Never Released album for Horizons, a label he's built a strong bond with since he first emerged on the drum and bass scene. The full album is a brilliant play on light and shadow of D&B - between the resonant depths of sub pressure and the glimmers of beauty in his expressive use of instruments and exotic samples that show snippets of life. And that translates well to the quartet of floor appropriate cuts that appear here, further establishing Naibu in the upper echelons of contemporary Drum & Bass' finest producers alongside Break and Calibre.

Review: Taking time out from his Ivy Lab project with Sabre and Halogenix, Stray gets his darkside on with this bad dream jungle workout. Whistling and rushing on some lovely rusty amens, the tripped out vocals and alien-landing loops on "Ginseng Smash" are a beautiful cacophony that work but in the most fragile / warped way. "Akina" is darker again; taking the juke/ghettotech template it's just as much techno as it is D&B. Truly heavy stuff. Not to be missed.

Uninvited Guest
Review: Hidden Hawaii main man Felix K links up with Drumkid on this ranging 10" of scuffed, experimental electronics. "Flanger Mouth" reveals much about its sonority before even listening to the track, which is a minimal affair that ticks along without the need for an obvious set of weighty drums, letting feathery top end percussion flutter out a mechanical pattern. "HUDR" is a softer proposition, as gentle and varied cuts of chord, note and hum spar with each other while managing to stay grounded in a teasing kind of funk. To keep you on your toes, "Uninvited Guest" opts for a juke-style rollick through rapid fire drums while the string samples that come jerking in have a staunchly hip hop air about them.
