Cat: WVFRM 03. Rel: 18 Apr 24

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Waveform 05 (5:32)
Waveform 06 (5:27)
Review: Waveforms is as a brand-new label from ASC and Presha who are already well known and respected for their work with Spatial/Auxiliary and Samurai Music. It's a new outlet that will specially tap into the sounds of 90s jungle and serve up new tunes on 10". Tim Reaper has been behind one, and Eusebeia is now on this one on blue-marbled vinyl. A-side cut 'Waveform 05' is a cavernous cut with pulsing bass and spine chillingly ethereal vocals up top while 'Waveform 06' keeps the pressure on with more throwback jungle realness and unrelenting breakbeat pressure.

Review: Waveforms is a brand new label spearheaded by ASC and Presha who the already revered minds behind Spatial/Auxiliary and Samurai Music respectively. They say they are on a mission to dive deep into the menacing world of early 90s jungle and cook up tunes reminiscent of that era and then serve them up lovely slabs of 10" wax. And right from the off the man who never misses, Tim Reaper, transports us back to the driving breakbeats and raw energy of that time with a pair of tunes that layer up a flurry of snares and booming low ends with wiry synths the sense of futurism that still holds true to this day. Sure to captivate old-school heads and new listeners alike.

Herbalist (4:26)
Review: Pixel and Mystic Pulse join the Rasta Vibez crew for some skunk-skanked jungle fun. First up is a storming rifle-flex twist on Pato Banton's fun-but-firm statement on herbal legalities. Complementing his rapid fire chats with equally thundering amens, it's got reload written into every red groove. Flip for more smoky sonic sermons as they take on another spark-up standard "Herbalist" with such authenticity you could easily be convinced it's 1992 again... Especially if you've practiced the lyrical content so much you think time travel is a thing. Pure Vibez.

Review: Get unstuck with these two delicious refixes from Unglued's debut 2021 album Interplanetary Radio as two of the most highly respected beat carvers apply their scalpels to one of Hospital's most exciting new-generation stars. The ravey 'Total XTC' is perfect fodder for Exit's Fixate as he winds up the 4x4s and laces it with his own special hardcore essence. The super sweet soul of 'Way Back When' is also a perfect fit for its remixer as Halogenix brings a whole new hazy shade to the dreamy vibes. Far out.

Review: Vinyl only and lucky if we see one release a year; Moonshine's Dubwise Revolution always keeps us keen with their white label 10s. This is no exception. Crafted by an anonymous source, these spicy versions join the dots in a contemporary, high grade way. Sleng tenging it out with plenty of molten low end, 'Garnedd' brings the soul while 'Ghetto Living' slugs it out with swagger. Grab it while you can.

Review: Deep Jungle have delivered once again as some seminal sounds from Lucky Spin have been unearthed and reissued. Destination 1995; a West Country trio named Orca are making their name for themselves in the jungle phenomenon. Featuring early sounds from Decoder (one half of the chart-topping Kosheen years later), each of these breakbeat bust-ups carries a certain air of Bristol grit and euphoric rave energy. 'Intellect' is all about the savage drum chops while 'Sample & Hold' goes in more for the deep swing. Timeless vibes. Have yourself a whale of a time. (Not sorry)

Review: It is the Yellow Machines camp that is behind the Modified Magic label. It started way back in 2015 and is only now up to an eighth release some nine years later, but why rush things? This is another quality outing for fans of straight up, no frills jungle. It is helmed by Champa B who kicks off with 'Bleeps' which is indeed riddled with bleeps from a fax machine in meltdown and is powered by bristling amen breaks with drilling bass down low. 'Wake Up' then rides a bumpy and quick stepping low end with rave stabs, crashing snares and fizzing pads all re-wiring your brain.

The Cruel Sea (5:00)
Review: Now for something completely different! Forever ahead of the game, Hidden Agenda's role in leftfield jungle soul has been undeniable and hugely influential since the mid-90s and it's amazing to see Jason back now and on such a maverick edge. Both of these cuts hit with a unique vibe and flavour that's so refreshing to hear. 'Dust' is a psychedelic wonderland that slides along with shimmering layers of percussion, guitar and keys. 'Cruel Sea' takes things a little darker as an edgy, unpredictable drive takes the lead. Think Krust's recent work on Crosstown Rebels and you're on the right planet. AKO Beatz never miss a punch.

Rinsa (5:47)
Review: Bristol jungle lynchpin Dead Man's Chest is usually found steering the good ship Western Lore, but back in 2017 he did a series of drops for Ingredients billed as Trilogy Dubs. Originally available on the label's Bandcamp site, now the first volume is pressed up on 10" for some deck-based air time. 'Tears (Fantazia Version)' on the A-side leads with a sad-eyed r&b sample and some lingering piano, but when the drop comes its pure Reese power with a slant towards d&b rather than the jungle DMC's more commonly associated with. 'Rinsa' on the flip is a rowdy slice of Mentasm trickery - the perfect counterpoint to the lead track's solemn vibe.

Kingz Of The Castle (5:05)
Review: What happens if you take a big vocal sample and drop it over a rinsing, old school jungle break beat? The first tune here, 'Opus III', that's what. It's a high energy affair that might well raise some eye brows given the vocal, but you can't help but admire it's all out joyousness and air of celebration. Flip it over and you'll find something just as divisive - another clattering jungle tune filled with kinetic kicks and flurries of snare, and once more a well-known vocal from Whamdo Project's 'Kings Of The Castle.'

Enei & Mefjus - "Crawlers"
Review: A tasty little teaser piece from his album Machines, here Enei calls up Eastcolours and Noel to revisit their 2011 hit "Cracker". Spacing out the darkness with a pneumatic bass plunge and more emphasis on the percussion it's more than worthy of its VIP status. Meanwhile on the B we find a brand new, non-album track "Crawlers". A tag-team with Mefjus, there's added edge and paranoia that gives it more than a faint whiff of Black Sun Empire. Tasty!

The Perfect Blues (Jacques Greene remix)
Review: Recent Ninja signing and all round great New York soul hope Jesse Boykins gets some choice remix treatment from a pair of artists who lend themselves to diverse assignments outside their common generic fields. Jacques Greene brings a whisper of his house leanings to bear, but focuses more on intricate reams of warm melody to work around behind Boykins' breathless vocal. Machinedrum meanwhile brings a more kinetic flavour with his inimitable drum programming, crafting a stunning syncopation with the vocal that leaves the tune running in two directions yet sounding utterly fluid at the same time.

Review: Sam KDC seems like a perfect fit for the Samurai Red Seal label, the UK producer having previously proved himself more than capable of crafting finely judged atmospheric soundscapes for exemplary labels such as Auxiliary and Nu Directions. Between Dreams is a natural progression for KDC, with Samurai Red Seal granting him the freedom to burrow deeper into elegant and emotive layers of sound, with the title track an all too woozy and intoxicating blend of blissful textures and contemplative moments. "Downpour" introduces an element of darkness and could quite easily be mistaken for one of Demdike Stare's more rhythmically driven moments. Superb.

Halogenix - "Raya"
Review: What a trio! Each one of the players involved in this EP has had a storming year so far... And this cute little Dispatch 10 incher is only going to bolster their presence as impeccable emerging artists. There's a great balance across the release, too, with both tunes countering each other with true style. Skeptical & Dub Phizix's "Lastik" is a raw, metallic stepper that glistens with early tech step charm. Meanwhile Halogenix adds balance with more full-bodied, atmospheric number. With icy pads, glitches and a resounding bass technique, it's the perfect foil for the grimier antics on the A.

Lead track 'Creation' twists the Amen and Mentasm together into a Escher-like contorted riff while the MCs exhortations of "When The Crowd Says Rewind!" and "Bizzy B!!" before it goes all dub interlude... 'Deep, Dark and Nastie' is just that, 'Bless This Sound' features the heaviest Amen created in conjunction with none other than Equinox (with edits supplied by blast from the past TDK), rounded off with '2099 Dub' reprising '1099 Dub' which was rinsed on dub back in 94.

Castaway
Review: Veteran Jungle professors Total Science continue their fruitful production partnership with the prodigious whippersnapper known as S.P.Y. - dropping two more cuts of pressure on this rather smart looking clear yellow ten inch. "Stay" will have the jungle purists all misty eyed with thick gloopy bass excursions reverberating from the nether regions amidst a delicious steppah's riddim augmented by evil sub bass deviations - a superlative example of drum and bass at its most dark and danceable. On the flip "Cast Away" proves just as crucial, laying down a dubbier rhythm over sprawling Detroit chords and tinny beats before dropping into the core segment of f***ed up, growling machine funk. Every bit as worthy as their recent Ghost Rider drop.

Mode - "Stepping Stones"
Review: Exit Records drop a second tantalising Mosaic Vol 1 ten inch sampler ahead of the main course which is set top drop at the end of the month. Instra:mental plough deep into the bowels of downtempo machine funk drum and bass experimentalism on "Scene 3", with a decidedly neon tinged synth hook swirling around the spaces between cascading industrial percussion and spurts of sci fi bass menace. On the flip, Mode works at a similar tempo on "Stepping Stones" with the barbed electronic pulses and intermittent bursts of sub bass dynamics that ride the half step stutter, offset by pads rich with ethereal detail. Big tip!

Review: Fresh from announcing a Digital Soundboy/Polydor partnership that should see a lot more support for rising artists within the drum and bass community, label boss Shy FX drops this heavyweight 10" featuring vocal drops from Kano and Donaeo as well as a refix Breakage. "Raver" is an overt nostalgic nod to jungle in its prime, with the riffing on Barrington Levy's "Many Changes in Life" a neat throwback touch. Equally brilliant is the drop into Soca at the end which is truly complemented by Donaeo's distinctive flow. On the remix front, Breakage win out with a slick amen heavy refix that will have the nostalgic junglists amongst you adopting the Benga brap in no time!

Review: Drum & bass collectives don't get any bigger than dBridge, Loxy, Skeptical, Resound and Kid Drama. With nary an announcement they've just dropped a superb album Legacy and this very special limited edition one-track 10" "Meltdown" is the album's understated finale. Rolling at a slightly slower - you might argue classic jungle - BPM, every element in its lean mean make up is essential. A salubrious analogue bass that flickers and develops almost organically over a pristine two-step, it's nine parts future, one part heritage... And a good reason to check out the whole album.

Review: The mighty Digital introduces a brand new Function off-shoot Function Dubz with a focus on ragga/vocal based jungle. Naturally, it's a hefty launch release: "Zion" is straight out of 1993, all head-twisted amens, crazy-sharp edits and evocative dub vocals. "Bad Bwoy Talk" brings us back to the future on a sleazy bubbly halftime roll and full badman chats from YT and Solo Banton. A full jungle history lesson in two tunes; few artists do it like Digital.

Review: DJ Monita's Skeleton Recordings presents this ferocious double header. On the first side, London based Tristan May aka Antidote's brutal drum and bass rager 'Angry Fist' takes influence from the more extreme sounds of the scene pioneered at the turn of the millennium by Dilinja or Loxy & Ink. More heavy artillery awaits on the flip, with the darkside roller 'The Caution' by veteran producer Threshold (Dub Clinique/Str8 From The Bedroom) with its eerie and subdued moments throughout adding to its overall tension and suspense - reminiscent of classic Optical or Johnny L. Definitely one for the heads!

On what is the second release for DJ Stretch's AKO Beatz this week, 'Watercolors' is jazzy and ethereal drum & bass on the more intelligent side of the spectrum. Unlike most other explorations in the genre thus, far this one really stands on its own - soothing, soulful and emotive. Review: Amazingly, despite founding 117 Records in 2013, DJ Trace only now puts out a first solo record on the label. On it, he gets deep into a rolling techstep sound that harks back to a 90s rave but with very modern production. The beats hit hard, the synths drill deep, and the energy is kinetic. These darkened tunes reflect the dystopian and uncertain world in which we live, but at the same time offer a great place of solace from it all. This sampler actually comes ahead of a six track 2x12" gatefold that will be presented on clear vinyl, and is a great taster.

It's a sweet 10-", too, with drums that rock back and forth on their heels, muffed ragga toasts stitched deep into the mix and plunging bass that takes you into freefall over and over again. On the flipside is a fully speaker busting, distorted remix by Yazzus. The drums are manic, the echoing vocals barely decipherable, the fuzzing, fizzing, brain melting bass turbocharged and powerful. Review: The AKO label has dropped not one but two super sweet 12"s this December. After one from Immortal Minds comes this equally smooth and seductive roller from Specialist X. 'Mind Signs' is a classic soulful gem - the pads are airy and golden, the drums as smooth as silk and the vocal is an aching one from a tender male. They come on fuchsia pink transparent vinyl that's nearly as nice as the tunes themselves. 'No More Mind Games' is super smooth, the deft design and subtle motifs that peel off the groove providing lyle anchors as the beats roll on a heart aching vocal soars up top. 'Lost In Love' then pairs a vocal you will recognise with super spacious drums and cosmic synths that are directly from the heavens. When it drops, you're locked in for the ride and there's nowhere you'd rather be.

Both writhing in the dark art of break craft, these are straight up jungle jams tailored for the dance. "Outta London" is the most forthright track of the set with its heavily layered breaks and dynamic flips from soft to savage while "Be True" nods back to the hardcore era with its euphoric pads, classic rave vocal line and more drums that were carved straight from the leathery soles of the devil's dancing feet. The music itself brims with quality: "Track 1" is a real roller, with a haunting top line that could be an oboe for the way it drifts so enchantingly up top. The drums are clean and crisp, with diffuse synths bringing warmth and soul to this deepest and dopest of tracks. "Track 2" is more aggy with its rattling fills and hardcore drum breaks bringing a more menacing feel to the dance floor. At once old school but also decidedly forward looking, this is classy drum & bass that is sure to get plenty of attention.

It's a track that packs a lot in, from old school high energy breaks to reversed stabs, warped bass and some playful MC work all run through with plenty of alchemic studio tricks and effects. It's the sort of naughty tune that will send crowds wild, and on the flip 'Culture Vibes' is a more straight up jungle workout with unrelenting drums and retro liquid motifs that slowly ride up through the mix to bring the soulful vibes.

Switch (6:53)
Sorrow (6:26)
Review: Two serious paths of momentum clash right on this hefty wax slab; Italian producer Enjoy has been enjoying a rich vein of form on labels such as AKO and Transmute while Criterion have just shelled us with 12s from the likes of Alaska & Paradox and Drum Cypha. Here the on point label and artist collide for two jungle insurgencies; "Switch" lulls us into a false sense of atmospheric security before throwing us to the breakbeat lions while "Sorrow" is much more of a slow burner that raises tension much more gradually by way of loose jazz drum layers and ice cold pads.

Ultra-Boogie (5:23)
Searchin (5:16)
Review: Shadowy skanks as Dubplate Championz return with another cheeky vinyl-only mission. Already championed by the likes of J:Kenzo, "Ultra-Boogie" has been a big summer hit for those lucky enough for dub access thanks to its wry reference to Roy Ayers mid-way. "Searchin" refocuses the perspective back onto the drums with much more of a heads-down roll-out feel. Crisp.

Tears (Fantazia version) (6:21)
Rinsa (5:47)
Review: Alive, kicking and whipping up the ghosts of rave, Eveson's Dead Man's Chest project continues to tap deep into the roots with modern day production muscle and dynamics. "Tears" is one for the rush crew: a one-way ticket to 1991, complete with authentic MC samples and breath-taking R&B vocal harmonies. "Rinsa" is more your 3am darkside joint. The type brock out Gachet or Doc Scott would have dropped back in the foundation era. Pranged, barbed and mean - your floor won't know what hit it.

Open Your Eyes (6:41)
Westworld (6:26)
Review: DMC's trilogy hits midway with two more essential rave odysseys. "Open Your Eyes" really plays with layers of time distortion as the grainy mix adds a warmth and realness to the detuned synth hook and classic vocal sample. "Westworld" on the B is more jungle than rave thanks to the rolling break focus and abyssal pads floating and waving over the top. For the heads... And souls and arms and legs and dancing feet. Horn crew?

Calavera (4:12)
Review: In case you didn't get the memo: TMSV has been killing it on whole new levels in recent years. Working with the likes of Artikal and Cosmic Bridge, his breadth has expanded and his roots have dug deeper and deeper into the purest jungle source while he burns all rule books in sight. "Jazz Error" is a mystic flute snapping blend of contemporary tribal jungle "Calavera" is unashamedly grizzly with its system-melting harmonic roar of a bass hook and rolling halftime drums. Of your floor aren't attempting the biggest ever skanking world record when you drop this, you're playing it all wrong.

Dead Already (5:29)
Forward (5:43)
Review: Don't fear this Reaper... Reaper Recordings is a mysterious brand new label with little information besides their dedication to the jungle craft. If this launch release from Ghosty (AKA Hungry Ghost) is anything to go by, they're not mucking around. "Dead Already" is a powerful subby slammer with eerie top lines and drums that could pierce concrete while "Forward" takes more of a sassy soul approach on the musicality but still drops deep into gully science when it needs to.

Control VIP (5:27)
Mindgames VIP (6:04)
Review: A piquant side-dish to the epic feast that is his debut album Dispositions, Emperor delivers two delicious VIPs that aren't on every format of the LP. "Control VIP" subverts the bassline while our emphasis is still fully squared on the mechanical snare slaps. "Mindgames VIP", meanwhile, is just mental incarnate. An absolute molten lava belter of a track, the levels of distortion on this are just unreal. Obscene.

Babylon Pressure (4:33)
Review: Vibez almighty! Another skank-packed doublet from Dutch soundsystem crew. This time Gunmen and Mystic Pulse are at the controls... The former gets his digidub dancehall vibe on with rapid-fire MC toasting and booty-busting halftime switches ("Greetings") while the latter carves out a soulful sun-kissed shaker that skanks so sweetly it could make Aries blush. Highly limited... Don't sleep.

DLR - "Thinking About Tomorrow" (5:54)
DLR & Total Science - "On The Edge" (4:32)
Review: Two titanic names on one massive 12" - Dispatch don't mess around do they? DLR takes the lead with a wriggling, sinewy acidic number where the elements are tightly woven but have stacks of space between them at the same time. Flip for the deliciously wonky funk cut from DLR and Total Science as "On The Edge" does a really far-out springy off-beat thing that sound odd to begin but grows on every listen... Just the way all old D&B records were created. Proper.
