Burial (Ray Keith The Tearing Terrorist mix) (6:48)
Review: Limited edition gold vinyl repress of Leviticus' monumental track, 'Burial', remastered for 2023 and back on its original home Philly Blunt. This release resurrects the original mixes alongside some iconic remixes from the 90s, encapsulating a significant chapter in the jungle movement. A landmark release, not only signifiying a pivotal era in jungle but also marking the inaugural release on Philly Blunt, kicking things off as they were meant to go on. Crafted in Dillinja's home studio under the collaborative genius of Jumpin Jack Frost, in turn operating under the moniker Leviticus, the original mixes appear in full force here - 'Madamoselle' and 'Lovers Rock' - resonating with rare groove and reggae influences that each propel the track to Notting Hill Carnival fixture status, eventually catching the ear of Pete Tong who facilitated a mainstream release on FFRR the following year.

Review: Is the d&b world ready for the return of Chase & Status? We think so, as the major label duo bounce back in double quick time to follow up on last year's What Came Before. As the title implies, Ruff Cuts finds Saul Milton and Will Kennard digging in for some rapid response bombs that build on their reputation as stadium-sized breakbeat bossmen. With big MC guest spots from the likes of Hedex and ArrDee and the drops that make you check you've not stepped off a cliff, this is the sound of top tier d&b from a duo who have changed the game like few others.

Review: Kruder & Dorfmeister's Conversions mix album takes you right back to 1996, when the Austrian duo were taking inspiration from the UK d&b pioneers and giving the sound their own lounge-y twist. For the first time since the mix was released, it's being presented as a partially mixed double vinyl edition, giving you access to some of the seminal cuts which make the mix such an enduring classic. From the easy lead in of DJ Unknown Face's 'Dat's Cool' to the soulful vocal licks and skittering breaks of Omni Trio's 'Nu Birth Of Cool' on to the cosmic jungle of Space Link's 'Time Zone', it's a masterclass through and through.

Neighbourhood (Dawn Raid remix)
Review: Long time underground UK stalwart Zed Bias dropped this - one of his many seminal cuts - back in 1999. Now, the dark garage classic 'Neighbourhood' gets reissued alongside some remixes. In its original form, it has an alluring vocal charm with unsettling chords over a grinding bassline and sharp percussion. The El B remix brings fleshier low ends and more swagger and shuffle while the vocals remain in place to blow up your spot. To close out the EP, Dawn Raid remixes with a high-energy jungle sound full of old-school signifiers. A proper EP for proper dance floors.

The Horn Track
Review: Strap yourselves in for the return of Missile Vintage with a fifth transmission and this one is a track from the boss himself. Missile Records founder Tim Taylor crafted this banger back in 1992 and released it on the legendary FFRR imprint. It soon made its mark on the rave scene of the time and has remained influential to generations of DJs, dancers and producers ever since. Now it comes back to vinyl in original form, as well as next to a huge Foghorn mix from Micky Finn and a more physical and breaks-lead remix from Blade. A great package that joins the dots between then and now.

The Man Of The Street (feat Mike Tansella Jr) (5:17)
Hasta La Vista, Baby (5:08)
Review: DJ Plant Texture aka Bari's Donato Basile makes a Return to Disorder with four blistering cuts of jungle, electro, techno and acid. He is a versatile producer who takes no prisoners and considers no sounds off-limits. This one kicks off with the brutalist beats and casuistic synths of 'The Other World' before funky, acid-laced techno bouncer 'Preserve The Rave' takes you to the next level. 'The Man Of The Street' (feat Mike Tansella Jr) is then a deeper, more cosmic cut with thinking synths but still plenty of powerful rhythms and last of all are the dark jungle breaks of 'Hasta La Vista, Baby.' These are highly charged and guaranteed dance floor destroyers from this ever-on-point wizard.

Review: Here comes an exemplary slice of dub/drum & bass hybridization from Congo Natty, who has been helming up slick fusions of these genres since the early 1990s. His first album in eight years, 'Ancestorz' as a title should be indicative enough. The LP explores the indigenous roots and influences of jungle music, from its historic use of African rhythms to samples of Native American flutes. Collaborations with artists as far-flung as Eva Lazarus, Blackout JA, Akala, Maverick Sabre, Courtney Melody and Shabaka Hutchings are all in tow, showing off Natty's love for contemporary bass music and maturer sounds in equal measure.

Review: By 1997 Photek had already marked himself out as a wild card in the rapidly evolving d&b scene. He'd had three years to carve out some frankly dizzying displays of break editing wizardry and such was the innovation on display there just had to be an album coming. Modus Operandi smartly stepped to one side of the dancefloor, offering a smoky reflection on where jungle and d&b had got to, highlighting the compatibility between half-speed downtempo and breakneck drums and bringing inherent jazziness to the forefront of the beats, which avoided all the usual cliches. It's a masterpiece which hasn't dulled with time and here it's getting a heavyweight reissue across three slabs to ensure the loudest cut. All the better to blow your mind with, all over again.

Review: Perhaps the spiritual successor of the Rage LP that made waves several years back, 'Generation Liquid' is a new series of compilations of soulful drum & bass tracks curated by Fabio, one of the pioneers and godparents of the genre. The 12" celebrates the legacy of his Speed, Swerve, and Liquid Funk events, and channels the spirit of his radio shows, collating works from Marcus Intalex, High Contrast, D Kay, and more. The mood of the compilation is unmistakable, and not one usually trodden in the world of nostalgic drum & bass reissues, with most of these tracks consisting of radio-ready emoters of the more polished kind, rather than the 'realist', 'raw' favourite of the day, liquid jungle.

His past two solo albums were released on longtime stadium d&b pushers Ram Records, but now Andy C's label has moved on to a major, he has followed suit with 'Evolve'. The album features 14 tracks which draw on a unique crock of influences for the normally insular contemporary d&b sound, containing allusions and inspiration from The Chemical Brothers to early hardcore and jungle music. Review: Constant Sound is one of the many labels Burnski aka Instinct is heading up right now and they are all as good as each other. This one focuses on house and tech sounds and welcomes Adam Pitts to the fam with three standouts. 'Gadget Crew' opens up and has a big, high-energy groove with plenty of oversized drum sounds and a retro melody paired with an intriguing soulful vocal. It has a dark garage tinge and is perfect for late-night action. 'Just This Once' is tough and physical, with warped and naughty bass and thwacking great hits irresistible to all. Last all comes a Skins Junglist Crew remix which is exactly that - a fine one for the jungle heads.

He has more than a quarter of a century of experience in the game and of eyeing new talents and helping them to shine and has always had a collaborative approach to music that will continue to define this label's MO. Zed is minting the label with a new single alongside award-winning d&b MC Inja. 'You Should Dance' pairs his warming tones with infectious garage drums and smeared, soothing chords that radiant heat. It will, indeed, make you feel good. D&b mainstay Bladerunner serves up a remix that has been doing the rounds for a while now and never fails to make an impact.

Review: While many artist bios say an act has 'taken the scene by storm', Rudimental truly did. The Hackney band of well-educated and skillful musicians quickly turned themselves into an internationally renowned live act who transferred the energy and drive of drum & bass into festival and gig environments. Home was their debut album a while decade ago now and two of its first four singles took the number one slot in the UK charts. It was highly anticipated and didn't disappoint with a wide range of sounds from dusty soul to steamy r&b, Balearic bliss and plenty of big beats.

Review: Vibes 93 is having a whale of time rinsing out all kinds of upfront drum & bass and jungle, but this takes the fun to a whole new level. The Dutch producer isn't making any attempt to mask the source material on his summer-scouting new release, calling on hip-hop and r&b legends for vocal samples in the midst of straight-up, feel good rollers. Eschewing his rowdier, underground material for something more universal, this is the kind of record which will bring a massive swathe of people together for some proper moments, but more to the point it's done with panache.

Review: Krust has been more than generous in opening up the archives and letting die-hard junglists get access to some of his most prized plates from the glory days of Full Cycle and V Recordings. Okbron have been a great conduit for such wares over recent years, and so it continues with these deep-cover diamonds from one of the genre's greatest. 'I Believe' is a tightly clipped bit of drum flair with razor sharp programming, film noir chops and swooning pads - a truly soulful excursion for those who like their beats steeped in jazz. 'Accepted Meaning' is a rougher breakbeat workout which is just as next level, with bright and bold synth pads that join the dots between Detroit and Bristol in powerful fashion.

And that is the extended mix of Luude & Bru C's 'TMO (Turn Me On)' (feat Kevin Lyttle) which is a big drum & bass anthem with ragga vocals, unrelenting and steel plated drum funk and naughty bass. A slightly more sweet and soulful Borai & Denham Audio remix also features as do Luude & Mattafix's anthem and festival friendly jungle anthem 'Big City Life' and similarly epic and accessible 'Oh My' with Issey Cross and some blissed out keys from one of Moby's classics.

It does a wide range of styles from sold out in a flash r&b edits to rollers for the club. They have helped make the label head Focus a mainstay of the scene and now he's back with another top nugget on nice blue vinyl. 'Take Me As I Am' launches with hyper-speed breaks and ice-cold hi-hats before the lush and romantic 'Do 4 Love' soothes mind, body and soul. The man behind it celebrated its anniversary last year with various different projects and now follows that up by handpicking a selection of remixes to take his most treasured material. There is a mix of old school dons and new school talents from all over the world here, each adding their own unique spin. Searchlight, aka Irish drum and bass producers ZeroT and Beta2, are signed exclusively to Goldie's Fallen Tree 1Hundred label and bring some lush jazz and broken beats to 'State of Mind' and later 'Sensual' while Metalheadz tastemaker J Kenzo brings dark, minimalistic and tribal sound to his Tribute remix of 'Jah'. Review: Seba and Paradox return to offer up twin atmospheric, deep and breaks-driven drum & bass gemstones, 'I'll Wait' and 'Hexagon'. Quietly powerful and with enough drive and soul to shatter windows like terrestrial sonar, the A-sider 'I'll Wait' is a masterfully crafted track, proving that, while many drum & bass tracks might technically fit the bill, it takes a much greater deal of extra care and attention to really perfect the style's pacing. B-sider 'Amara', meanwhile, is much looser, albeit no less trigger-happy on the vocal oneshots, and it comes with a entrancingly time-losing rhythm to boot.

Review: It's never easy keeping up with Vibez 93 and his all-out assault on the D&B scene, from the roughest jungle cuts for the underground through to canny crowdpleasers like this record right here. 'Video' is a no-nonsense flip of India.Arie's 2001 soul classic, with a righteous lyrical message which sits perfectly atop some fresh and funky breakbeats. 'Westchester Circles' meanwhile doffs its cap to Adam F's none-more-iconic 'Circles' and its source material, 'Westchester Lady' by Bob James. No prizes for guessing the reference material on 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine '23', but this is a different version to the Roy Ayers classic which is going to be peak festival fodder this season. Then cap it off with a perfect slice of sunshine rollage in 'Brasilia' and you've got a record primed for tonnes of fun wherever it gets dropped.

Reaching back to 2020 and the early days of the label, they've hit on a winning streak with Good Looking veteran Big Bud, notching up four 12"s thus far and now reaching a fifth. Evolve is his new LP, charting a new feel for 1990s influences and various musical homages to the acts and songs that contributed to his sense of musical evolution and maturity as a musician. Nods to the Chemical Brothers and early jungle and hardcore are conveyed through contemporary collabs with the likes of CamelPhat, Gene Farris and LOWES.

It's an EP inspired by the sound of the English club scene in the nineties and noughties, labels like Good Looking Records and artists such as Mike Millrain. Opener 'Losin Control' sure is a compelling mix of electro and breaks that soars on cosmic lines with euphoric vocals in the distance. 'Come To London' has a distinctly garage feel to it with its crisp broken beats and there is more high energy but melody-rich breakbeat action in 'Dark Gravity' while 'Space Jazzy' is s super sweet and deep jungle cruiser.

This compilation on Wonder Palace makes the case in no uncertain terms, taking a broad view over his work and delivering some stone cold classics alongside harder-to-find bits and pieces. Review: After the success of the first volume, Fabio returns to curate a second round of Generation Liquid featuring the absolute pinnacle of the liquid d&b sound. As a genre which gave rise to a tidal wave of imitators and formula followers, it takes the authority of a legend like Fabio to sift through and present the real deal, whether it's widely hailed classics or hidden treasures that help paint the picture. Soulful, uplifting and driven by d&b's relentless energy, this is another testament to liquid's vital role in the story of breakbeat evolution, featuring legends aplenty from High Contrast to Calibre, DJ Marky to Alix Perez.

Review: We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records do thorough justice to their name by putting out this new LP from Pizza Hotline, a rather mysterious, no less keyword-optimised producer who makes liquid drum & bass inspired by PlayStation-era video games. With its formerly digital version described by the label as 'the craziest album of 2022', it's got eight tracks evoking blippy nostalgia and unbridled adventure via melodic synths, atmospheric pads and chirpy breakbeats. In other words, this is a riveting listen for anyone who might self-identify as a 'child of the internet', or whom at least grew up with videogames. Technically a reissue, this LP version also includes a previously unavailable track, 'POLYGON DREAMSCAPE'.

Review: South London d&b brothers Sean and Mark Roberts created Probe-One after growing up on pirate stations, inspiring Sean to buy a deck and mess around himself. It goes that the siblings were frustrated at the drip release of d&b cuts and took the initiative themselves. 'Aether' and 'Expanse' clock in at just over 15 minutes combined, the long and winding ambient buildups giving way to ginormous breaks on 'Aether', or receding into a more atmospheric direction circa the Playstation 1 'IDM' era. The A-Side is for the breakbeat inclined, filled with intensity and volume against its ethereal synth waves. Side B is for the late-night Pulse FM listeners, the gentle percussion of dawn breaking - it's almost relaxing if such a thing were possible.

Review: There is a mix of old-school dons and new-school talents from all over the world here, each adding their own unique spin to Goldie's timeless. It's a record that remains a drum & bass benchmark, but also one of the most seminal in all of electronic music. The man behind it celebrated its anniversary last year with various different projects and now follows that up by handpicking a selection of remixes to take his most treasured material.

Review: Montreal-based producer Priori steps up to Midgar label and helps mark its ninth anniversary with his new EP Pareidolia. It's a sordid techno affair to start with as 'Hazard' layers up sludgy bass with menacing leads. The rolling drum transport you into a dark underworld before 'Pareidolia' then plays with deft and hyperactive minimal rhythms next to watery synth droplets. There is a broken beat brilliance to 'Glass Shards' with its skittish loops and dubbed-out rhythms then last of all, 'Memory Palace' glows with backlit and heavenly synths as minimal rhythms unfold and float you through space. It's a fantastic tune for 5AM wig-outs.

Review: Simon Huxtable's Aural Imbalance project remains as productive as ever some 25 years on from the first releases, and now newer labels like Okbron are stepping up to carry his work after taking so much inspiration from his approach to atmospheric drum & bass. Despite Okbron's capacity for reissues it seems these two joints are new transmissions and they certainly have a sparkling finish which speaks to Huxtable's experience and precision in the studio, but there's also a gritty bite to the breaks and some rich depth to the synth work which ensures there's a generous dose of personality in these luxurious excursions into the deeper end of d&b.

He shows a very different side off the back of plenty of top edits that bottle up plenty of disco and Bossanova vibes. Here he has teamed up with Russia's dubplate don BR Selecta for an EP full of energy and joy. 'YEAH YEAH' is happy-go-lucky garage with pitched-up vocals and lively drum, 'Get My Gruv' is a kinetic two-stepper and 'Cyberrave' is just that with its all-out synth madness and flurries of breaks, then 'Serious Talking' closes out on a darker jungle tip. A varied and vital 12' for sure.

Review: Given Okbron's focus on atmospheric d&b new and old, it's logical they'd want to do something with the mighty Peshay. Following his long-serving peers like Digital, Big Bud and DJ Trax, we're treated to two previously unreleased gems from one of the masters of beautifully crafted jungle. There's no word so far on the provenance of these cuts, but whether they're vintage material dug out of a box of DATs or something more contemporary, they sound like quintessential Peshay at his deepest and best. 'Celestial' lives up to its name with its soaring keys and pads atop a rowdy amen, while 'Latitude' heads into golden era Good Looking territory with its oceanic chords and new age sound palette.

J Laze - "Memoryz" (6:21)
Kyro - "Looking Back" (7:58)
Review: Breaks-jungle defibrillators Okbron Records return for another white label offering, conspiring with producers J Laze and Kyro in laying down two dreamy and somnambulant new ones, which err on the cleaner and serener sides of things - and for their quality alone are limited to just 300 copies. On the A, we've got Laze's 'Memoryz', which plays out in linear dolphin-jungly fashion, scoping out the mids in favour of one singular, sizzling amen, which skirts above a certain augmented bass-pad-stab, all while a semantically vacant femme vocal sample acts as a kind of vanishing mediator between these two elements. Kyro, meanwhile, breaks all the rules on 'Looking Back', eschewing drum & bass' usual insistence on snappiness in the drums, preferring a much more washed-out waterfall of sound, returning the blue thematic notes of jazzstep in the process.

It's a nigh-timeless track that straddles raggatek, jump-up and jungle techno in almost a single breath. Much later came the VIP (variation in production), which added far glossier and more heavenly variations and a harder-edged sheen. Now it gets a reissue. Also here comes the brand new VIP of 'Love 4 You', which is a masterclass in airy, spacious intro-work, which segues into pure drum-driving as per the formula.

Forward Thinking
Review: Okbron have been more than happy to participate in DJ Trax's renewed resurgence following his album for Over/Shadow and a string of essential 12"s. Following last years Forest Dawn release he's back with two lush new tunes which prove he's as inspired as ever in the field of atmospheric d&b. 'As Day Breaks' opens up the record with the kind of strange, misty morning mood which billows out perfectly over the agile breaks, feeling classic and yet fresh all at the same time thanks to Trax's needlepoint drum programming. 'Forward Thinking' follows suit with another set of nuanced pads that move away from the played-out formulas of the genre. The strafing synth bleeps cutting through the mix are the icing on top of this masterclass from one of the best in the game.

He manages to fuse organic and synthetic materials here as he heads down a darkly introspective path where minimal and IDM, dub and techno all collide in mutant form. 'Jangil' is a real standout with its bubbling halftime rhythms and icy synths backed by distant angelic chorals. The bewitching sounds continue on 'Galathea' which rides back and forth on its heels as subtle sines, scurrying synths and menacing pads all interlock before 'Hinam' locks you in a dense synth stasis and loopy sense of lurching rhythm.

Review: On Evolve, Nick Douwma has gone back to the future, offering up an album that giddily mines the music that inspired him to fall in love with electronic dance music in the first place. So, while it's undoubtedly a radio-friendly, 21st century big-room dance album, the collected tracks include nods to many classic dancefloor anthems (see 'Fine Day', an EDM-d&b re-make of the Opus III classic that also inspired Orbital's 'Halcyon'), crossover acts of old (the Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers), vintage hardcore and jungle, and 90s house. A string of guests and collaborators swing by to help, including ARCO (on recent single 'Vibration (One More Time)', Chicago house stalwart Gene Farris (on the throbbing, festival-friendly 'It's Time'), and hardcore and jungle pioneer Jonny L ('Turn Up The Bass').

Review: The time is indeed right for jungle and drum & bass pioneer DJ Marky to return for his second-ever LP, The Time Is Right. Coinciding with a stonking launch party at London's Jazz Cafe, in which Marky laid down a 3-hour influences set, the album channels a similar vibe of prioritising influences and collaborators. It comes as an almost entirely collaborative affair with the likes of L-Side, Makoto, Dossa & Locuzzed, and MC GQ all appearing as the star members of Marky's cast of OGs. Sonically, it's a jazzsteppy and liquid soundbath, flaunting Marky's clever use of samples and light-footed drumwork.

A-Sides) and jazzer Nathan Haines join forces once again to present their debut album, Radio Therapy. Perhaps the album's gestation period can be explained by its home on the most coveted originators of it all, Metalheadz, who must still have plenty of people knocking down their doors. 17 tracks of wild production instinct and a floor-shaking lack of compromise make for an unprecedented space-bound trip, as Cambridge draws on his taste for breaksy atmosses, and Haines on his virtuosic muso's knowhow, to produce a string of new jazzstep originals from '1980 One' to 'The Girl In Blue'. The B-side, meanwhile, celebrates legacy releases from the duo from the 90s, such as 'Whole Half' and 'Point Of Departure'.

Review: Phonica Records toasts 20 years in style with this three-disc exploration of the house and techno they're best known for. It's no surprise they were able to pull in a heavyweight cast of characters for this collection, but they've made sure to leave enough room for the stars of tomorrow, too. This is their fifth drop on Embrace The Real, and once again they've done a bang up job of bringing some fresh ideas to a classic approach. '4AMK4' is a relatively chill roller, while 'Fire Is Our Friend' dices up jazzy breaks at a mean clip and dances nimbly on top of the subs and 'Hurt Me No More' swerves directly towards hardcore euphoria, pianos n' all.

This new edition of the V/A comes at a prescient time, as many writers and original scenesters are now seeking to document the genre 'comprehensively'. Whether or not this could be seen as a worthwhile feat, it remains inarguable that the best way to truly document a genre is to look back on the music itself. A new addition to the series, Vol. 6 contains tip-top selections from lesser-cited early pioneers such as Marley Marl and DJ Dextrous, and many of the tracks have not been repressed since the mid 1990s.
