Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. Review: Not many people could call an album Genius and get away with it but you'd be hard pushed to find anyone who disagreed that Detroit beatmaker J Dilla wasn't just that . His beats shaped a whole sound and scene when he first emerged and he is still just as revered many years after his death. He worked on various projects and put out plenty of solo material but her we're presented with another top collection of early cassette recordings. There are all his trademark dusty beats, soulful samples, dreamy melodic motifs and more to be enjoyed here.

Review: Here's an intriguing remix choice by Pepe Bradock, Coda Deep and Ame: 'Big Booty Express' channels hot-footed twerkage into scratchy yet weighty house beats, over the course of four exclusive mixes on 12". The original beat, which also appears here, was a solid and rather crude piece of space-age lo-fi, filled with Dilla-ey noise wreckage. It was the only Dilla beat to ever come about as a tribute to Detroit techno. And for that, the three remixes lend completely new ideas to the original, tooting and farting into a nice n' raw ether.

The E-Mu Systems SP-1200 drum machine and sampler was the first electronic instrument Jay Dee worked with while crafting the incomparable styles and sounds which defined the early stages of his legendary production. The SP-1200 was his primary tool of choice at the inception of his career. During this period, he created classics for early Slum Village, The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, among many others.

Review: Ahead of the release of the Rebirth of Detroit album which features Motor City upstarts MCing over DIlla beats, this taster 10" drops two stone cold slices of head-snapping hip hop that made Dilla such a legend amongst beatsmiths. Danny Brown is on fearsome form on "Jay Dee's Revenge", slightly delirious and completely on the attack in his flow, but it's all dressing for the utterly monstrous beat underneath. A big bass lick and nagging melodic hooks make this an unmissable reappropriation of the Dilla legacy. "Birthright" finds the excellent Guilty Simpson throwing down his laconic delivery over a sparser beat with the drums at the front of the mix.

Review: Since the sad passing of legendary Detroit hip-hop producer J Dilla in 2006, there have been plenty of posthumous releases. Even so, there's something surprisingly exciting about The Rebirth of Detroit. Featuring 21 previously unheard tracks recorded solely with Detroit-based rappers and singers (Danny Brown, Chuck Inglish, Boldy James etc) during the final years of Dilla's life, it's a formidable collection even by his own high standards. Flitting between tough rap cuts, luscious hip-hop instrumentals and glorious hip-hop soul (see the wonderful "Let's Pray Together"), there's little in the way of filler. Dilla was, and remains, a producer ahead of his time.

Review: Dillatroit is the eagerly awaited 12 track vinyl only release of unreleased Dilla material - arriving courtesy of Moodymann's Mahogani label and Dilla's family foundations some six years after the legendary producer's premature demise at the age of 32. Anyone reading this should be fully aware of Dilla's legacy on hiphop and beyond so there's no need to set the scene with any biographical background. Dillatroit features rappers, DJs, singers and musicians from the Motor City (Andres is rumoured to be involved somewhere) across the 12 hip hop orientated tracks. It runs the gamut of the Dilla style palette, with dusty head nodders (''Birthright'' and ''Ride With It'') next to sweetly soulful jams '('Let's Pray Together'' & ''Detroit Madness'') and jazzier instro cuts like "Mind Yo Business" propped up against rowdy posse cuts such as "Say My Name. " A worthy posthumous addition to the Dilla canon!
