Review: Pearl Jam's 12th album, Dark Matter, sees the veteran rockers returning to their roots with a renewed sense of vigor. Departing from the reflective tone of their previous release, Gigaton, the band opted for a more spontaneous approach to songwriting, gathering in a room to craft material that feels refreshingly loose and live. The album as a whole delivers some convincing arguments for a classic Pearl Jam collection. Tracks like "'Scared Of Fear,' 'Wreckage,' and 'Setting Sun' showcase the band's trademark grandeur, with muscular guitar leads, powerful drumming, and Eddie Vedder's unmistakable vocals leading the charge. Many long time fans will appreciate this album as a fiery rebirth after a series of more stilted releases. Review: 10 years on since their smash No.1 hit 'Pompeii', a song that has solidified itself in UK pop history in its own right, British singer-songwriter Dan Smith's brainchild Bastille's Bad Blood X still packs the same punch. Review: On Evolve, Nick Douwma has gone back to the future, offering up an album that giddily mines the music that inspired him to fall in love with electronic dance music in the first place. So, while it's undoubtedly a radio-friendly, 21st century big-room dance album, the collected tracks include nods to many classic dancefloor anthems (see 'Fine Day', an EDM-d&b re-make of the Opus III classic that also inspired Orbital's 'Halcyon'), crossover acts of old (the Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers), vintage hardcore and jungle, and 90s house. Review: American alternative rockers and, if you're anything like us, teenage favourites the Smashing Pumpkins, dropped their second album Siamese Dream in July of 1993. Frontman and vocalists Billy Corgan produced it with Butch Vig and the sessions were reportedly marked by difficulties and tensions but that didn't stop the record from debuting at number ten on the Billboard chart and going on to be certified quadruple Platinum. For the way it brings alt-rock, metal, shoegaze, indie and psychedelic influences to commercial rock it is often regarded as a gold standard of its era with high production values and ornate arrangements at odds with many of its peers.

Review: Despite her superstar status, gained in the years following her 2002 debut, Norah Jones has refused to stick to the same musical script, instead choosing a wide range of collaborators while applying her song writing talents to a variety of genres. On Visions, she's once again evolved her sound further in cahoots with producer Leon Michels - founder of revivalist funk-soul stable Big Crown Records and long-time member of the Dap-Kings. What's on offer is pleasingly fuzzy and nostalgic in tone, with the pair conjuring up songs and sound worlds rooted in late 60s garage-soul, psychedelic dream pop, and a brand of Americana rooted as much in black American music as country. For proof, check superb recent singles 'Running' and 'Staring at the Wall'.

Review: It's hard to believe that a full decade has passed since the debut LP from Glaswegian synth-pop trio Chvrches weaved its way onto a myriad of end-of-year lists while being praised as one of the best breakout albums of the 2010's. Combining John Carpenter-esque retro 80s synthwork with coldwave precision and vocalist Lauren Mayberry's lilting yet singular cadence and opaque lyrical vulnerability, The Bones Of What You Believe served as a highpoint of modern pop and alternative rock by drawing on nostalgia to craft a bevvy of refreshing material falling somewhere between an emo Kate Bush or Kraftwerk turned pop producers. Bolstered by their continuing progress over subsequent full-lengths and a legion of avid fans, the trio have rarely ceased to capitalise on the momentum set by their much adored debut, with singles such as 'Gun', 'Recover', and the anthemic 'The Mother We Share' still retained as live and festival essentials. If this isn't already in your collection, then this latest tenth anniversary edition leaves you no excuse.

Review: The original sleazy stars of the synth-pop boom, Soft Cell made their presence felt in an instant when they debuted with Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret and their perennial classic cover of Northern Soul standard 'Tainted Love'. Marc Almond and Dave Ball had a widescreen vision of what their music represented, leaning in on a neon-lit, night-walking vision of early 80s Britain which was more candidly outrageous than most were prepared for. The record has picked up plenty of positive reviews already and that should be no surprise given the heavyweights included.
