Mason Collective X Bipolar Sunshine - "People In Love" (6:53)
Arielle Free - "Feels So Good" (5:35)
Bob Sinclar X A-Trak X Mele - "Deep Inside Of Me" (5:08)
Review: Defected's vinyl series continues to commit the label's biggest digital releases to wax for the first time, and this special twentieth edition has been created in partnership with Shelter, the housing and homeless charity. Together, in July 2023, the label and charity launched 'From House To Home', which pioneers an ingenious idea; taking 'house music' to its utmost logical conclusion, deploying reworks classic house tracks as fundraisers for helping secure actual housing for the homeless. On this latest edition to the series, Germany's Jonathan Kaspar remixes Breach's revered deep house anthem, 'Jack'. Then comes the bubbling Mason Collective and Bipolar Sunshine collab 'People In Love', shortly followed by the recent pop hit by Arielle Free, 'Feels So Good', before a round-off in the form of a generational collaboration between production pioneers Bob Sinclar, A-Trak, and Mele with 'Deep Inside Of Me'.

Cola (Mousse T Glitterbox mix) (6:43)
Review: There's a fair chance you'll already have heard "Cola", experienced production duo Camelphat's collaboration with vocalist Elderbrook. The original version, with its rumbling bass, atmospheric builds, subtle bassline house influence and "she sips the Coca-Cola" refrain, has become something of an anthem since first appearing on digital download earlier in the year. For this first vinyl release, Defected has packaged the now-familiar original mix with a trio of reworks. The most impressive of these comes from German veteran Mousse T. He brilliantly re-casts the track as a bumpin' chunk of celebratory disco-house complete with thrilling piano riffs and an elastic bassline.

Review: Ben Westbeech and Kon are The Vision, an accomplished musical duo who first came together having made a chance meeting at Southport Weekender. Between them they have covered all dance styles from classic to contemporary and so it's no surprise this album is a special one with fine craftsmanship and exemplary mixes of disco, soul, house and funk over 14 lush tracks. The list of collaborators is also high class with Roy Ayers, Honey Dijon, Andreya Triana, Dames Brown and Nikki-O all adding their own excellence. It all adds up to a record that gets form dance floor delights to funk laden gems, soul drenched jams to heartfelt odes.

Review: Defected gather together some big hitters for this VA release which will appeal to all those who like their house music pitched for the biggest rooms possible. John Summit takes us to the top with 'La Danza' and Dennis Ferrer & Disciples get some epic remix treatment courtesy of Summit once again. Ferreck Dawn and Izzy Bizu face off on the B side with 'Life', which brings some powerful pop hooks into the mix atop a catchy as hell house beat. That leaves it to Dawn to tackle Jem Cooke for a version of 'Back Tomorrow' that's just as anthemic, giving you everything you need to move a massive crowd.

Review: Get ready for a rush-inducing dose of proper soulful vocal house from the mighty Dames Brown. On this record for Defected, Detroit's foremost trio of Athena Johnson, Lisa Cunningham and Teresa Marbury linked up with the mighty Amp Fiddler and Andres for a rip through house music as real as it gets. The original 12" mix of 'What Would You Do?' is hard to beat for raw, heavy-hitting groove and production, but there are some choice remixes included here for those who have different needs, whether it's the bouncy jazz funk of Two Soul Fusion's version or the smoother sound of Folamour creating a sleek disco house variation for the peak time crowd.

Review: Some of tech house's biggest names feature on this new Defected 12" alongside a trio of more contemporary talents. Butch & Nic Fanciulli are very much in the first category and they offer the happy hosue and big samples of 'I Want You' before new schooler Hannah Wants rolls out a chunky house groove with blissed out Ibiza vocal energy on 'The One' (feat Ara). Archie Hamilton pairs old school Chicago energy with a fresh vocal on the anthemic 'Let The Light In' (feat HQA) then Dutchman Ferreck Dawn shuts down with the crossover dance sounds of 'Better' (feat Jena).

Review: Given that Defected's multi-arist EP series was designed as a way for vinyl DJs to get hold of some of the imrpint's biggest digital download hits, you'll be unsurprised to learn that volume nine contains some seriously sizable material. Riva Starr kicks things off with a remix of Dennis Ferrer classic "Hey! Hey!" that turns the track into a Moroder style electro-disco throb-job, before Ferreck Dawn delivers some big room vocal house pleasure. Over on the flip, John Summit's "Deep End" is another beefy big room workout built around sweet female vocals and a thickset bassline, while Offiah's "Play It By Ear" is a 21st century update of the muscular, mid-90s MK sound.

Review: It's a case of old school meets new school on this fresh new slice of house from Defected. Representing the vets is the one and only Louie Vega, while in the contemporary corner are New York's finest, the Martinez Brothers. Marc E Bassy also pops up on vocals for this feel good deep house gem. His part sung, part rapped delivery comes over soul drenched beats and nice singing leads, which have long been a hallmark of the great Masters at Work man, Vega. A TMBLV mix is more pumping, Honey Dijon cuts loose on elastic bass and rugged rhythms and Dom Dolla offers a more energetic and main room version.

'Heaven' is something of a modern house gem that has picked up worldwide plays from tastemakers like The Blessed Madonna, Groove Armada and Eli Escobar. Next to the sax-laced and loved-up original which cannot fail to bring joy to your life are three mixes. Danny Krivit brings out the jazz and soul, Kon keeps funky and the Groove Assassin Supernova edit is all about shuffling garage energy.

MoBlack, Emmanuel Jal & Henrik Schwarz - "Chagu" (MoBlack version) (7:16)
Review: Over the last three years, DJ/producer Mimmo "MoBlack" Falcone has turned MoBlack Records into arguably the World's leading label for African house music. Defected clearly thinks so, because the label has decided to put out this EP featuring tracks from remixes from Falcone and some of his regular collaborators. On side A Falcone joins forces with Armonica to deliver two sparkling, rubbery, positive and heavily electronic reworks of Fela Kuti classic 'International Thief Thief'. Both hit the spot, though it's the Dub, with its extended vocal breakdown and trippy effects, that floats our boat. Over on the flip we're treated to two versions of MoBlack, Emmanuel Jal and Henrick Schwarz hook-up 'Chagu': a bouncy Afro-tech take from Schwarz and a warmer, deep Afro-house interpretation by Falcone.

The Dangerfeel Newbies - "What Am I Here For?" (original NDATL vocal - Danny Krivit edit) (8:45)
Review: Since the 1970s Danny Krivit has been a prolific re-editor. We're used to him cutting up classic cuts - think disco and soul, in particular - but he's never been afraid to turn his talents to contemporary cuts. That's what you get on this surprise Defected release. On the A-side he turns his attention to "Heaven", the killer gospel-inspired modern disco single from The Vision and Andreya Triana, turning in a version with plenty of drops, instrument solos and more emphasis on the righteous, life-affirming vocals. He's in a smoother mode on side B, extended and rearranging the rich and soulful dancefloor treat that is Kai Alce's Original NDATL vocal mix of The Dangerfeel Newbies' "What Am I Here For?" - a gem from 2016 that has previously been criminally overlooked.

Review: Defected once again have the main room at peak time in mind - with these four scorchers aimed squarely at said dancefloors. From current scene favourites Camelphat: the masked crusaders teaming up with the man with the golden voice Ali Love, on the adrenalised "Dopamine Machine" (club mix), Argentinian producer Offaiah rounds up the A side with the deep and sexy bounce of "Work It Out" (club mix). On the flip, Northern tech house hero Josh Butler shows he can do vocal house too on the very Kerri Chandler influenced "Feels Good" (feat Hanlei - extended mix) while Spanish veteran David Penn does for that classic Defected style of funky house on the uplifting "Nobody" (club mix).

Review: Todd Edwards is affectionally known as Todd the God because of his skills. Those skills are two fold - he famous fomented this own style of garage with quick beats and cut up vocals used like an extra instrument in the mix. But he is also a badass DJ who can slam through house and garage with high energy and plenty of charger. As such, he is rightly celebrated here with an overdue entry into Defected's long running House Masters series. Review: Last time out Andreya Triana and The Vision (AKA KON and Ben Westbeech) took us to "Heaven" and back. For their latest single they've asked us to gape in wonder at some suitably sizeable "Mountains". In its original "Extended Mix" form (side A) the track is soulful, slick and seductive, with Triana's superb vocals rising, mountain-like, above a musical panorama rich in dreamy chords, jazz-funk bass, gospel pianos and club-ready beats that sit somewhere between deep house and disco. Danny Krivit is the man at the controls for the flipside remix. He stretches out the track impressively, making a bit more of the spacey synths, guitars and bass while re-framing the track as a soaring slab of piano house brilliance.

Review: Defected's numeral EP series is up to a 13th edition but this one is in no way unlucky for anyone. It collects together some of the biggest and most widely heard tunes of 2022 across two sides of wax. First up is the summer banger 'Rise Up' from Harry Romero & Inaya Day which dropped in June and was never far from a big moment. The Deep In Jersey remix of 'Rise Up' is more deep and dubby and then on the reverse Spanish artist David Penn offers 'Push The Feeling' with vocals from Leon Stanford. Review: When it comes to gospel-powered 21st century dance music, Detroit trio Dames Brown have been involved in many of the most memorable records - not least Sophie Lloyd anthem 'Calling Out' and Horse Meat Disco hook-up 'Message To The People'. Here they join forces with fellow Motor City musician Waajeed for another arms-aloft classic in the making. In its original form, 'Glory' blurs the boundaries between gospel disco and gospel house, with the trio's powerful vocals rising rubbery bass guitar, loose-limbed beats and riotous organ licks aplenty. It comes accompanied by two fine remixes: a stomping, piano riff-powered gospel house take from Rob and Lyric Hood's Floorplan project, and a stomping, thickset gospel disco 'dancing club dub' courtesy of Kelly G.

Review: Though mostly known for their colourful and soul-drenched house, Defected can also do more physical and tech-leaning sounds as exemplified on this new EP. It features a mix of new school tastemakers with Jansons opening up with the old school breaks and bars of 'Hypnotic' (feat Dope Earth Alien) then American star LP Giobbi layers up the freewheeling melodies and punchy drum loops on 'Giodisco.' Sam Divine gets for a deep and driving house sound on 'Take My Hand' (feat Josh Barry) and Oden & Fatzo X Camden Cox close things out with a more light and airy vocal sound on 'Lady Love.' Review: Doing the leg work at the Miami Winter Music conference this year pays off for Defected yet again as they give dj's around the world a superb collection of the biggest and freshest tunes from this annual shindig. Available unmixed and ready to go, these all of these tunes hae been tried and tested and guaranteed to go off.

Riva Starr's mix of Tear Down The Walls (featuring the inestimable vocals of Labelle's Nona Hendryx) kicks things off in just the right direction - soulful, jacking and anthemic to the max. Shapeshifters have a ball with the gospel-like vocals of disco dame Candi Staton, who interpolates lines from You've Got The Love into Musical Freedom - "sometimes I feel like... it gets harder every day". The effect makes your ears stand up and a broad smile break out over your face.

Major names obviously abound in this stellar collection - Crookers and Miike Snow colabborate on Remedy, Steve Angello's makes the cut with the lush vocals of La Candela Viva while Dj Gregory and Sidney Samson's Dama S Salon continues to become essential party food for dj's. One of the unexpected gems though is from Defected newcomer Ridney, whose At Night gets the nod here and has all the hallmarks of a future classic, a funky yet deliriously epic worker. As with most Defected compilations, this is a one-stop shop for summery greatness.

Review: Having expanded from a single impressive beachside venue in Miami to a global club brand, it was probably only a matter of time before Nikki Beach got the Defected treatment. Here the brand's numerous global venues are celebrated with a two-disc mix of typically slick and funky house. Defected stalwart ATFC takes the reigns on disc one, laying down a versatile, globally-themed selection that takes in tracks from Osunlade, Green Velvet and The Heartists, whose late 90s classic "Belo Horizonte" gets a re-dub. Roman Rosati handles disc two, mixing up percussion-laden goodtime jams from Aeroplane, Joris Voorn, Roy Davis Jnr and The God Men. The sound of summer all year round.

Review: The renaissance of US garage stalwart Marc "MK" Kinchen has been one of the more pleasing aspects of the recent 1990s house revival. Kinchen was always one of American dance music's most reliable producers, able to straddle trad US garage, tougher NYC house (particularly in his excellent, cut-up heavy dubs) and breezy, soulful flavours. This timely retrospective for Defected's ongoing House Masters series does a good job of covering all bases, showcasing a variety of familiar and unfamiliar favourites from his bulging back catalogue. Pleasingly, there are plenty of those skippy, organ-heavy dubs (formidable rubs of Chez Damier, 4th Measure Men, The Reese Project and Masters At Work), and a smattering of original productions. A worthy blast from the past.

Review: Run by the people behind the now near legendary Zouk club, Zoukout is Singapore's premier annual outdoor music event - a beachside festival focused on good house and good times. This two-disc set celebrates this year's event and boasts full-length DJ mixes from both Karizma and local hero Hong. Predictably, it's the former whose mix stands out, offering a typical mix of the tried-and-tested and the little known, with pleasing diversions into broken rhythms, global grooves and smart, soulful flavas. Hong's mix is less subtle but no less enjoyable, moving through better-known cuts from the soulful and funky house canon.

Review: Having moved from Bristol to London, London to Berlin and Berlin to California, veteran Brit house producer Jesse Rose isn't a man short of native influences. Musically, such globetrotting has clearly influenced his approach to house, which has shifted over the years from broken beats and fidgety bump to emotion-rich, bass-heavy deepness. Made For The Night aptly proves this point, offering both a mix CD of current favourites (entitled "Mixed For The Night") and a disc of his own productions and remixes. Taken as a whole, it's rather revelatory, showcasing both his current approach to DJing (deep, bumping, heavy on bluesy vocals) and the production skills that propelled him to international A-list status. As career summaries go, it's near faultless.

Review: Given Kevin Saunderson's status as one of electronic music's all-round legends, it was probably inevitable that he would, at some point, be asked to mix an installment in Defected's long-running In The House series. Since Saunderson isn't a regular on the mix CD circuit, this is something of a rare treat. For the most part, it's a highly enjoyable journey, with Saunderson slickly moving between deeper, melodic fare, tougher, drum-laden percussion workouts, jaunty Latin and Afro-house and, of course, tracky, funk-infused techno, all the while retaining a strong element of soul. There's also a smattering of Saunderson's own productions, including a piano-laden 2011 version of "Good Life".

Review: Given the length of his career and his strong contribution to San Francisco's breezy deep house scene, it's little surprise that Defected have decided to honour Miguel Migs with his own installment of the celebratory House Masters series. While it doesn't include many of his dubbier efforts - a regular feature of his releases on NRK and Naked Music back in the day - House Masters: Miguel Migs does give a decent overview of his career to date. Musically, it flits between synth-heavy, electrofunk-meets-house jams, smooth West Coast deep house and disco-flecked workouts. It also includes some classic remixes from the Naked Music era, some of which haven't been given an airing in well over 10 years.

Review: Given their long history, this is surprisingly the first official mix CD from Chocolate Puma (their only previous effort being a contribution to Defected's Amsterdam '09 set). It's actually surprisingly diverse, touching on many different flavours of house over two entertaining discs. There's plenty of big room fare, of course, but also forays into fuzzy, bass-heavy groovery (Rampa's "Everything", a wobbling Martin Brothers remix of Riva Starr and Major Lazer), carnival beats (their own "One More Time"), classic US deep house (Chez Damier), low-slung breaks (Duke Dumont) and even a dash of revivalist punk-funk (Phil Kieran).

Review: It's a mark of Derrick Carter's status that Defected have afforded him the luxury of a lucrative House Masters retrospective. Carter, of course, was one of the driving forces behind Chicago's "boompty" sound, a formidably energetic, swinging take on house that seems to have fallen from favour in recent years. House Masters: Derrick Carter offers a neat reminder of the qualities of the boompty sound, and more specifically Carter's own production highlights. While all the obvious cuts are present - "Where U At", "Square Dancin", Sound Patrol's superb "Trippin Among The Stars" - there are plenty of lesser-known gems, many featuring Carter's distinctive scat vocals.

Review: Rene 'Noir' Kristensen is arguably a producer whose time has come. Having enjoyed a decade-long apprenticeship, releasing comfy deep and tech-house blends on a variety of labels, he seems ready to take the step up to the next level. Recording this mix for Defected's long-running In The House series will certainly help. It's something of a breezy winter warmer, offering a slick journey through the words of sumptuous deep house and melody-driven tech-house, with a smattering of '90s flavoured cuts thrown in to keep things moving. Kristensen's extensive use of loops, accapellas and drum tracks leads to some memorable blends, too, with his fusion of Sandy Rivera's "Changes" and his own "Satisfied" standing out.

Review: As DJs, record label executives and promoters gather on Miami's South Beach to test their rave endurance in the city's annual backslapping gurn-a-thon, house granddad Pete Tong joins forces with festival favourites Groove Armada for a celebratory mix-up. Tong handles mixing duties on disc one, mixing up hyped, soft-focus house fare and tech-tinged groovery from the likes of Jamie Jones, Subb-An, Deetron, PBR Streetgang and Hot Chip's Joe Goddard. Groove Armada, meanwhile, offer up a more goodtime selection on their disc, fusing disco/house crossover hits from Maxxi Soundsystem and others with vintage deep house (Fingers Inc, CLE), revivalist fun (Bingo Players covering "Devotion"), hyped bizniz (Nina Kraviz) and forgotten gems (Stacey Pullen).

Review: Given his long association with Defected - and in particular Strictly Rhythm - it was probably only a matter of time before Yoruba Records chief Osunlade was asked to mix an instalment of the long-running In The House series. Those expecting Osunlade's usual African rhythms, organic soul and shuffling grooves are in for a treat. The first disc, in particular, scratches this itch, offering a string of world music-inspired treats from himself and like-minded producers Ame, Marcus Wogull and Atjazz. Disc two pushes thing up a notch, wandering into soulful garage flavours whilst retaining the loveable deepness to which Osunlade is most associated.

Review: It's been nearly 20 years since Madrid-based darkroom tribalist DJ Chus dropped his first 12". The time seems perfect for a career retrospective then, with mainstream clubbing behemoth Defected duly obliging. House Masters is a suitably hefty two-disc selection of his finest productions and remixes, which should have a feeling of familiarity to those that. have followed the career trajectory of DJ Chus.. Expect sweaty, percussion-heavy workouts that sit somewhere between the shirts-off pump of golden era Tenaglia and the handbag-friendly soulfulness of classic Defected releases. It's arguably the "Iberican" phase stuff (circa 2000-2005) that stands out, though there's plenty of newer material that also passes muster - most notably a near-anthemic remix of Kevin Saunderson's most recent Inner City outing.

Review: Having previously impressed with last month's Beach Album, Ibizan hotel turned venue Ushuaia once again joins forces with Defected, this time for a two-disc trawl through main room dancefloor pastures. Like the previous album, the tracklist is perhaps a little more interesting than you'd expect, with the likes of Scuba, Maxxi Soundsystem, Jay Shepheard and Recloose making appearances (the latter with the still brilliant "Feels Like Magic"). Sure, there's the usual Defected big tunes - remixes of Inner City and Storm Queen, plus cuts from Nic Fanciulli, Mark Knight, Blaze and ATFC - but they're relatively few and far between. As a result, The Club Album is surprisingly good.

Review: Beachside hotel Ushuaia - home of the Swedish House Mafia every Wednesday throughout the summer, fact fans - is the latest venue to enter into the world of branded compilations, thanks to a tie-up with Defected. Cynics will be surprised to learn, then, that The Beach Album is actually rather good. Sure, there's some typically soft focus house and a dash of Defected standards, but also some brilliant nu-disco, nu-Balearica and on-point deep house from the likes of Tornado Wallace, Todd Terje (whose "Inspector Norse" will no doubt be everywhere this summer), Bonar Bradbury, Mark E, Behling & Simpson and Tiger and Woods. There's also a chance to revel in the majesty of John Talabot's "So Will Be Now", arguably one of the tunes of 2012.

Review: Faced with a deluge of ultra-serious industrial techno, Noir & Haze pushed in the opposite direction. "Around" is a spacey but catchy arrangement, its billowing chords sweeping along the melancholic vocals. Solomun from Diynamic provides two top-quality remixes which turn the original into a dubby groove laced with trancey riffs, while the extended instrumental version is more techno-centric, glistening with shiny synth solos. On this much needed Defected reissue, we even get the Sub-Ann remix (another scorcher), and the MURKed vocal mix, focussing more on electro elements and chopping those famous vocals left, right and centre. Big? No, MASSIVE!

Review: Defected seem to be the go-to label for venues looking to launch their own compilation series. After putting together selections for various Ibiza and Miami clubs, Defected now sprinkle a little funky house stardust on Bloomingdale, an "exclusive beach club and restaurant" in the Netherlands. This debut two disc mix-up features CD-length DJ mixes from Franky Rizardo and Ricky Rivaro. The latter's mix, themed around "a day at the beach", features more laidback and obviously soulful fodder. The former's goes deeper into dancefloor territory, dropping tracks and mixes from MK, The 2 Bears (the really quite large "Work"), Mark Knight and X-Press 2.

Review: It's easy to sneer at a summer-themed compilation that sells itself on being superior to other summer-themed compilations, but Sunset Sessions Deluxe Vol 2 does largely deliver on its promise. Certainly, those looking for a laidback and relatively easygoing collection of vaguely summer themed downtempo beats and deep, soulful house could do much worse than pick this up. Amongst the standard Defected selections (tracks from Sandy Rivera, Copyright, DJ Gregory, Reel People etc), there are some pleasant surprises. The third disc is particularly good, showcasing a dubwise take on house through quality cuts from Alton Miller & Amp Fiddler, Joshua, Kerri Chandler and Induceve (Henrik Schwartz's excellent remix of "Time To Begin").

Review: Defected Records release the first in a new series rounding up the biggest and best house tracks of the year, bringing chart successes, dancefloor anthems and upcoming favourites together on one definitive album. Compiled and mixed by the label's A&R head Simon Dunmore, 'For The Love Of House' includes tracks from Defected's own roster of heavy hitters including Bob Sinclar (with his two hits 'World, Hold On' and 'Rock This Party'), Blaze (in the form of the re-issued 'Most Precious Love'), Martin Solveig and crossovers in waiting from Junior Jack, Mr V, Fish Go Deep and Outwerk alongside key scene smashes from Ame, Lifelike & Kris Menace and Dennis Ferrer. This is all in addition to numerous other massive tracks from 2006 such as Chris Lake, The Egg, Fedde Le Grand, MANDY and MAW, making the album a true reflection of everything hot in clubland from the past 12 months. Available on triple CD and two doublepack vinyl LPs as well as a digital format, 'For The Love Of House' is a must for any house music fan or lover of dance beats.

Tensnake - "Coma Cat"

Mount Kimbie - "Carbonated"
Armando - "Don't Take It" (Thomos edit)
Review: The first of two vinyl samplers that act as accoutrements to the Defected main course that is Tensnake's In The House mix. Naturally Niemerski's "Coma Cat" is here and everyone has heard it or seen the questionable video so there's no need to discuss that. It should be noted that the track is without doubt the crossover hit of the year though. It's complemented on the A Side by the satisfying deep acid bump of Zev's "Don't Break It" as remixed by Messrs Glasgow and White aka Art Department. The brushed warm tones of Mount Kimbie's "Carbonated" open proceedings on the flip whilst the inclusion of the reverberant acid flux of Armando's epic "Don't Take It" is further proof of Niemerski's old school credentials. Top 12".

Review: The second vinyl sampler accompaniment to Tensnake's Defected mix begins in fine style with the suitably rich and multi faceted Diskomiks version from Prins Thomas of Al Usher's "Lullaby For Robert" which is in stark contrast to the heavy house bump of Louie - a mid 90s secret weapon that hasn't been available on vinyl for a long long time. The flipside also represents Tensnake's penchant for flitting between classics and more recent tracks, with Jamie Jones' bouncing remix of Tom Demac sitting next to the deep tech pop of Michael Mayer's "Amanda" still sounding just as odd some ten years later.

Review: "Sound Of Freedom" is the next smash hit from France's finest DJ superstar Bob Sinclar. This is a massive dance track featuring the vocals of Gary Pine, who is also the lead singer of The Wailers and Dollarman. Sun-drenched reggae rhythms, a classic house hook borrowed from Rozalla's "Everybody's Free" and the smooth vocals of Gary Pine (who also featured on "Love Generation") all combine together to make another feel good anthem from Bob.

Review: There are promising signs that something of a renaissance in dance music is taking place in the greater New York area, helmed by one of the new school progenitors of deep house. As half of New Jersey based Sfere Recordings along with house legend Kerri Chandler, Dennis Ferrer can only be described as the face of hope for a new generation of producers of deep and musical electronic grooves. A real artist with an aptitude for song-writing and new production concepts, Ferrer is undoubtedly at the top of his game. Review: It's hard to imagine what minimal techno artists like Gary Beck and Spain's Paco Osuna are doing on a Defected compilation. However, Beck's contributions display none of his usual white knuckle fury, and the rolling grooves of "Hands in Mine" and "Get Down" are full of seductive vocals and filters. The same can be said of Osuna's collaboration with Daniel Sanchez, a deep, summery groove propelled by a sexy filter. There are darker moments on this compilation, like Riva Starr's own bleepy, analogue version of Cajmere's "Percolator", but in the main, it focuses on the style favoured by Osuna, Beck and the ivory tinkling, jazzy nuanced tracks from Guti & Dubshape, Santos and Deniz Kurtel.

Review: With a production career that dates all the way back to 1999, it's only fair on Marco Niemerski to take full advantage of the opportunities afforded him thanks to the monumental success of his Tensnake production "Coma Cat". The homage to Jelly Bean Benetiz has been the swiftest example of a track crossing over from the underground in recent times. The fanfare preceding its release on Permanent Vacation in January no doubt was intrinsic in the momentum that has since made the track a staple on Ibiza with celeb DJ Daveed Gueeeta having taken a shine to it. Whilst purists may sniff at Defected jumping on the Tensnake bandwagon, the label must be applauded for allowing Niemerski full reign on this In The House mix which doesn't have a single commercial concession on the track list. In fact it's more than a bit intriguing to see how the Defected faithful take to hearing a mix that begins with Mugwump and ends with the iconic 90s house of Phase II, veering between the likes of Michael Mayer, Mount Kimbie, DJ Sprinkles and Basic Soul Unit along the way.

Review: Defected's House Masters series has provided listeners with some essential trips through the extensive back catalogues of genuine pioneers - Blaze, MK, Kevin Saunderson - but also some unlikely tributes to more recent mainstream house stars (Bob Sinclar anyone?). This Chocolate Puma retrospective sits somewhere between those two extremes - whilst it's hard to argue that the production duo have been anywhere near as influential as true scene greats, they've certainly been prolific. The Chocolate Puma duo of Zki & Dobre have been providing DJs with a string of big, anthemic tracks and remixes over the course of the last decade and this three CD 'best of' features all of those dancefloor hits, alongside long-forgotten original productions and previously hard-to-find promo-only reworks.

Review: Marc Kinchen is kinda worshipped here at Juno - "Given", released in 1993 on his Area label (and soon to get re-released on Omar S's FXHE), is a classic example of the US garage sound that was taken on by Todd Edwards et al in later years. "4You", which appeared on the same 12" as the aforementioned "Given", is here treated to a repress on Defected with a brace of contemporary remixes from Maya Jane Coles and 2000 And One. Coles - who owes a great deal of her sound to the likes of MK - serves up a driving tech house retweak, while 2000 And One brings the brass to the fore on his version, indulging those late night keys. As good as they are, nothing beats the original cut. That bassline, that clipped vocal, it all still works ... brilliantly.

Review: Established in 1999, Defected records have a ludicrously huge discography, boasting some of dance music's most established and respected names as contributors. For DFTD287 (!!!) they announce German duo Dalton. Driven by 4 x 4 bass drums and claiming that they simply want to "send the party into ecstasy", Dualton are a fine choice for Defected with "Formula" (the original mix was released last year). Cadenza artist Reboot gets given remix duty on the flip, and the outcome is as darkly twisted as it is infectiously danceable, expertly blending house and techno production values to devastating effect.

Review: As part of the celebrations marking Pete Tong's two centuries (sorry, 20 years) on Radio One, the veteran DJ has put together this Ibiza-themed mix for Defected. Since he was obviously too busy to do two discs, Felix Da Housecat weighs on with a mix of his own on CD2. Tong's mix is actually pretty good, and comes packed full of groovy, underground house fodder (Cajmere, Stacey Pullen, Marco Carola, Azari & III remixed by Jamie Jones etc.). Felix's mix, meanwhile, boasts his usual oddball mix of snappy main room house, quirky electro, acid-era classics (Jamie Principle's excellent "Waiting For An Angel") and irritatingly catchy synth noises.

Review: Renowned label Purple Music's head honcho Jamie Lewis drafts in the irrepressible vocals of Michael Watford for a stripped down yet typically soulful affair. Switzerland's Jamie Lewis has produced many standout records for his own Purple Music imprint, including "The Light" with Michelle Weeks, "Streetlife" with Chance, "Hooked On You" with Cerrone and "For You" with Michael Watford. He has also worked with house music legends such as Bob Sinclar, Sandy Rivera, Boris D'Lugosch and Mood II Swing on various projects. As well as being a talented producer (he was nominated for his work at both the 2004 and 2005 UK House Music Awards), his DJ skills have taken him around the globe and he continues to be in high demand on this front. Lewis returns with the legendary Watford on vocal duties on "It's Over", a trademark soulful track originally available on Strictly Rhythm back in the day, incorporating a deep bubbling bassline with clean keylines and string hooks to provide a suitably classic backing to the tale of a failed relationship, delivered with power and restraint in equal measure. Recalling the glory days of US garage, the record adds to the producer's catalogue of high quality work for respected labels such as Defected, Yellow and Mn2S. Remixes come courtesy of Jamie himself, Kings Of Tomorrow main man Sandy Rivera - who takes things a little deeper without losing any of the soul drenched appeal of the original - deep garage heads 83 West out of the US and the versatile Soul Creation production team, led by Jose Burgos, who have recently released an EP on Defected. All in all, another essential Defected dancefloor bomb, and a big tune for the label and many key DJs from as far back as the Miami WMC. Jamie Lewis has also mixed the latest edition of Defected's international compilation series, which will ensure his profile escalates in many territories over the next couple of months.

Experiencing V's original productions is like taking a trip back in time to electronic music's golden age. He draws on his many influences and inspirations to create songs that are at the same time thought provoking and infectious, and encompass much heart and soul. Despite being a massive music fan with eclectic tastes, and wanting to be a DJ after his experiences in late 80s and early 90s NYC club land, it wasn't until Mr. V met superstar producer, DJ and Grammy award winner Louise Vega, that he truly found his calling. Vega saw the drive and potential V possessed and hired the aspiring Nuyorican talent as his assistant at the world famous Masters At Work label. In this position he was given a rare glimpse into the global electronic music scene and before long was taking to the decks alongside his mentor.

Review: Bob Sinclar releases his hotly anticipated 4th studio album, featuring the huge hit singles 'World, Hold On (Children Of The Sky)' and 'Love Generation’. Chris Le Friant, as he's known to his mother, adopted the name Bob Sinclar from a French spy movie, becoming an imaginary character, part playboy and part extrovert. An ultra busy international DJ and the head of his own highly respected record label Yellow, Bob has produced numerous acclaimed tracks and remixes and released three studio albums to date. Two singles from these previous albums have already dented the UK top 10 ('I Feel For You' and 'Gymtonic') and his latest album project entitled 'Western Dream' boasts even more of this obvious commercial potential, it has sold over 70,000 copies in its first month of release in France. The first single from the latest record, the UK top 15 hit 'Love Generation' (featuring ex-Wailer Gary Nesta Pine), not only reached the #1 spot in 5 territories on its way to global domination, including Germany, Australia and of course Bob's native France, but has sold a staggering 1 million copies worldwide to date, with over 100,000 of those coming from the UK. Interest in the track continues undiminished, as proved by its 25 plus week stint in the UK Top 100 and selection as the official German world cup 2006 theme tune. In light of this, only a follow up of epic proportions could reach the same heights, and with the new Bob Sinclar single 'World, Hold On (Children Of The Sky)' it seems as though he's found it. Featuring the soulful vocals of Steve Edwards, 'World, Hold On' has the rare quality of being both deep and uplifting at the same time. Including another nagging whistle hook atop Mr Sinclar's synths and drums, this follows on where 'Love Generation' left off by teaming the drops of a club smash with pop sensibilities with another lyrically special song warning of the dangers of neglecting our planet - a particularly topical theme right now. This is a track that has the rare ability to cause dancefloor devastation while possessing broad commercial appeal - in short, this is already one of the anthems of the year made with one foot on the dancefloor and another firmly in the charts. So the album is here!
