Review: And the award for most apt compilation title of the year goes to... While on face value it may seem like the USA's Pacific North West and UK's English North West have very little in common, this collection of tracks confirm there are similarities. And they go further than the damp conditions both regions often have to endure. Cheshire-born Burgess and West Coast native Stanley have been friends for 30 years, and their respective homelands collide here. Tim Peaks Diner, established by the former as a festival pop up, apparently owes much of its stylings to "Twin Peaks", and that series-cum-movie-cum-legend has inspired much of the soundtrack to said eatery. New Wave (The Chills), opiate folk (Gwenno), psychedelic country (Blue Orchids) and plenty more help capture the mood of a fantastical waypoint on some fictional road trip.

Review: A couple of years ago French crate digger Charles Bals invited us to "Club Meduse", an imaginary Riviera club where the music was always obscure, European and decidedly mid-80s. Here he opens the doors once more, delivering an open-air friendly soundtrack heavy on rare private press gems, overlooked beauties and the kind of cuts that most would consider Balearic (even if they may have been more popular in Italy and France). Highlights are plentiful, from the eccentric instrumental of Voyage De Charme's fretless bass-powered "Hotel Des Savanes" and the soft-focus, flamenco-tinged bliss of Claude Miss' "Paco Ye Adama", to the sun-kissed jazz-funk/synth-pop fusion of Marc Et Frank's "Cap'tain Coke" and the reggae-zouk quirkiness of Les 36 15's "Zoulous! (Remix)".

Review: It's been three years since Session Victim's last album, the rather fine "Listen To Your Heart" on Delusions of Grandeur, so this fourth full-length excursion is definitely well overdue. As you'd expect, the music contained in it is as warm, musically rich and intricately detailed as ever, though there are fewer nods to disco, boogie and Balearica than we've come to expect. Instead, they've delivered a smoky, atmospheric and intoxicating collection of cuts that attractively shimmies between drowsy late night house, dreamy electronica, jazz-fired downtempo jams, dusty breakbeat shufflers and the kind of stoned, ultra-deep fare that used to get showcased on F Communications' ace "Mega Soft Office" compilations back in the 2000s.

Review: Veteran producer, selector and all round champion of impeccable grooves Alex Attias is back on BBE with a second volume of his "Lillygood Party" collection. These are some seriously tasteful jams skirting house but with an emphasis on soul. Peven Everett sounds resplendent on Stacy Kidd's "How Bad I Want Ya" while The Elements Of Life's "Children Of The World" is a soaring slice of jazz funk strapped to a smooth house beat. There's even Pharoah Sanders jamming his sax over a peppy rhythm section and spiritually charged house meanderings from Universal Tongues featuring Elle. It's a collection that surprises and satisfies at every turn.

Review: Reissues don't come more significant than this. Jon Hassell's work new and old has been enjoying plentiful appraisal in recent years, with his outlook on Fourth World music finding fresh relevance with a modern crop of artists. While much of his catalogue has been given a fresh lease of life, they've been saving one of his most seminal works. Vernal Equinox was originally released in 1978, one of Hassell's first albums alongside Earthquake Island. It's essentially the blueprint for outernational music - a heady brew of global signifiers stewing together in one unclassifiable pot marked out only by Hassell's inimitable trumpet style. From ambient heads to sonic explorers, you won't want to miss the chance to own this most precious of albums.

Review: Big-room house maestro David Penn has been doing his thing since the early '90s, but his increasing presence in the Defected family has pushed the Spanish DJ and producer into the stratosphere. Across two discs on this definitive collection, we're treated to a tidal wave of huge original tracks and some remixes of seminal classics. Jon Cutler's "It's Yours", Pete Heller's "Big Love", River Ocean's "Love & Happiness" - just some of the anthems that get the Penn treatment on here, but also watch out for "Stand Up" featuring Ramona Renea and "Losing You". They're but two of the smashers from Penn's own studio. Peak-time pumpers don't come slicker than this.

Review: It's quite shocking it's been six years since the last Caribou album, 2014's knockout "Our Love". Dan Snaith has never felt the need to rush his music out, and there was an interim Daphni album in 2017 to be fair to the guy, but here we are with a new set that sees Snaith returning to a little of the delicate songwriting and winsome electronica he forged his reputation on in the early days. There's a lot going on in here, from smooth as silk yacht rock-isms to deliriously modernist cut ups and more than a few wild pitch shifts to keep listeners on their toes. It's playful and heartfelt, and rarely lingers in one place for too long while still retaining a sense of calm. It may be not at all what you expected from Caribou's return, but we'd wager it's even better than you hoped.

Review: For anyone with even the smallest interest in gospel music and its relationship with black American dance music, Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's "Praise" series of mix CDs should be essential listening. Volume six, subtitled "A Prayer For Peace, Love & Wisdom", is every bit as inspired as its predecessor, with Clausell moving between traditional choral gospel music, gospel soul, and soul-jazz, deep house and disco (including Crown Heights Affair's incredible "Say A Prayer") featuring suitably righteous lyrics. To tie the whole thing together, Clausell has also included a number of inspirational and thought-provoking spoken word samples taken from recordings of preachers and black community leaders. It's a brilliant touch.

Review: Brian and Roger Eno have their own accomplished legacies in music - Brian as a polymath producer and artist, and Roger as a composer. Now the brothers have pooled their talents into their first collaborative album, Mixing Colours, which has taken shape over a 15 year period. The overall process involved Roger recording piano parts in MIDI to send to his older brother for processing, resulting in a mass of work which they finally whittled down to this exquisite collection. Lovers of both artists will be immensely satisfied, as the fusion of classical piano composition and adventurous ambient electronics merge for an engaging, hypnagogic listening experience.

Review: If there's one label to trust with presenting a faithful and knowledgeable overview of the '90s garage house sound, it is surely Z Records. Joey Negro's evergreen stable has been a bastion of the music since its inception, and this second volume of gold standard tracks is as well-informed as the first. Serious cuts and mixes from the likes of Satoshi Tomiie, Kings Of Tomorrow, Kerri Chandler, Marshall Jefferson - the list of big hitters goes on. But it's not just marquee bookings - there are some seriously headsy jams in here that will even have connoisseurs learning a thing or two. Bursting with musicality, soul and grooves by the pound, this is exactly how a comp should be done.

Review: Almost four years have passed since the last studio set from Pantha Du Prince (real name Hendrik Weber), a producer whose output has steadily shifted from club-focused minimal techno to more melodious, atmospheric and experimental electronic compositions. "Conference of Trees" continues this trend, delivering a ten track set whose melodious, otherworldly and alluring compositions were partly created using all manner of specially-created wooden instruments (some of which he hand built himself). While it's undeniably a Pantha Du Prince album - even with the assistance of wood-created sounds there is still a reliance on his usual electronic approaches - "Conference Of Trees" feels somehow different, more human even. Given the spellbinding results, it's a departure we approve of.

Review: Dub techno magician Yagya (real name Aoalsteinn Guomundsson) has been releasing music on other people's labels for almost two decades. Now he's taken the logical step and launched one of his own: Small Plastic Animals. The debut release is an album from the man himself, his ninth in total. Many of the tracks on "Old Dreams & Melodies" are underpinned by metronomic, dub-fired techno and house grooves, but it's the various musical elements layered atop - string quartets, cheery synthesizer melodies, hushed spoken word vocals, fluid piano motifs, delay-laden clarinet lines and so on - that really catches the ear. It's a formula that results not only in a string of fine tracks, but also a strong album that's undoubtedly the Icelandic producer's most accessible and expansive set to date.

As such she makes a wonderful choice to compile this new collection on Rush Hour, which travels through a rich tapestry of grooves from the tender and funky to the electrically charged and feisty. The cast of characters is huge, from 2000Black's magisterial broken beat to Nu Era's dazzling techno, Mr Fingers in an especially mellow mode and Georgina Ann Muldrow's captivating soul. Everything's bound together by effervescent musicality and a cool mood it's all too easy to sink into, like all the best Sassy J sets.

This new collection on BBE celebrates nearly 20 years since Satva first emerged with his debut album, spanning a whole host of career highlights and collaborations. There are some equally legendary figures involved here, from Afefe Iku and Alton Miller to Abel Tabu and Maalem Hammam, but the constant is Satva's style throughout. It's deeply rooted and spiritual, but also immediate and infectious like the best house music should be. At 30 tracks strong, this is a perfect primer for one of the finest forces in global dance music culture.

Review: In 2016 saxophonist and clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings established the "Ancestors" collective of South African musicians to perform live and record debut album "Wisdom Of Elders", a journey into the spiritual and avant-garde side of jazz inspired in part by the struggles of previous generations of black musicians. Four years on, the Sons Of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming member has reassembled the collective for album number two, "We Are Sent Here By History". It treads similar musical territory to its similarly essential predecessor, with Hutchings and his South African collaborators presenting tracks that, in his words, "meditate on the fact of our coming extinction as a species". While the music is nowhere near as doom-laden and miserable as that may suggest - it's very entertaining, thoughtful and spiritually involved - as albums go "We Are Sent Here By History" is certainly hard hitting.

Review: Kompakt have a knack for calling on their impressive pool of talent and pushing them in interesting conceptual directions. So it goes on this second volume of Velvet Desert Music, where the mysterious allure of arid climes meets with the slinky grooves of the 70s and 80s. It's a style the likes of Michael Mayer and Superpitcher can turn their hand to in style, and likewise the likes of Mount Obsidian do a stunning job capturing a dusty soundtrack atmosphere on "Ride". Look out for the jangling death funk march of Sascha Funke's "In Der Tat", a clear highlight.

His was the accessible, soulful side of the genre, captured most effectively here on his career highlight from 1976, House Of The Rising Sun. From seriously funky wig outs like "Theme For New York City" to the catchy version of "House Of The Rising Sun", every track is a hit on here. Review: After the wild revelations of the first Irreversible Entanglements album back in 2017, this vital new force in jazz and beat poetry returns to International Anthem with a new set. Once again the interplay between the players and lyricist Camae Ayewa is electric, not least on the fraught title track. The subject matter weighs heavy but all too familiar - racial tension and inequality in America given an urgent voice by Ayewa, and perfectly accented by Keir Neuringer's saxophone, Aquiles Navarro's trumpet, Luke Stewart's double bass and Tcheser Holmes drums. This is essential stuff, both in message and in sound.

Review: Welcome back Tycho, on a productive roll and ready to dive straight back in after 2019's stellar "Weather" album for Ninja Tune. This follow-up continues in the vein of Scott Hansen's creative arc to date, fusing traditional band dynamics with electronics in the most fluid of ways, and making a heart-stirring brew out of the resulting interplay. The drums bite with urgency on tracks like "Outer Sunset", but never at the expense of the winsome guitar lines and swooning synths. The tempo ups and the beats diversify on "Easy", but the overall mood remains consistent throughout "Simulcast". It's a cohesive world that wraps around you from the first bars to the last, and it's a very pleasant place to be.

Review: It would be fair to say that "The Adventure Of Kohsuke Kindaichi" is a "cult album". While many will have heard snippets of some of its tracks in hip-hop tracks and via dusty disco re-edits (a number have been given the scalpel treatment in the past), few outside of Japan have been able to get the album since it was released way back in 1977. The premise is odd - composer Kentaro Haneda created the disco and jazz-funk set as a soundtrack to a series of detective novels - but the music is superb: a zany but hugely entertaining mixture of nods to various soundtrack styles underpinned by killer disco grooves and swirling orchestral movements. We'd heartily recommend checking out the clips ASAP.

Review: There are few signs of 'difficult second album syndrome' to be found on "Through Water", Lapsley's confident and assured follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2016 debut "Long Way Home". This time round the former teenage prodigy has written and produced pretty much everything on the album, delivering a suite of songs that effortlessly blur the boundaries between glacial electronica, off-kilter synth-pop, R&B and folktronica. There are some moments of real beauty scattered throughout - see the rather fine "Leeds Liverpool Canal" for starters - while the way her distinctive vocals are matched by inventive and enjoyable musical arrangements is mighty impressive. Sure, there's nothing as rush inducing as club hit "Operator", but what's here is every bit as alluring.

Review: Paul Webb could not have picked a more apt name to release music under. An old time-y mood drips from every part of "Clockdust", which is packed full of tracks that tell real and very recognisable narratives - forsaking complex metaphors for heart on sleeve honesty. Perhaps best exemplified on the single 'Jackie's Room', a shuffling, jazz-nuanced number that tells us about a relationship in which the yarn spinner explains his view that his partner will never grow old so long as he desires her. While the words may often cut straight to the chase, instrumentally this is a far denser and more complicated beast. Even when the arrangements are comparatively stripped, there's either an expansive or intelligent feel to things. Take the intro drop on 'Kinky Living', which sounds as though New Orleans has met the Badlands. Impossible not to love, let's leave it at that.

Review: Ratgrave is just one of the many projects Max Graef is involved in, on this occasion with Julius Conrad. The project first surfaced on Funkineven's Apron Records in 2018, and now it's back on Black Focus for another trip through oddball electronics aplenty with a healthy dose of soul and funk poured in for good measure. From the catchy sing along "World Aid" to the dusty boogie hybrid of "Instant Toothpaste", this is an album crafted by a duo with serious chops that doesn't take itself too seriously. Get down, get funky, get weird.

Review: Ian William Craig returns with a new album heavily shrouded in personal experience. The recording took place around the heavy wildfire season in British Columbia, Canada, 2018, during which time Craig lost his grandfather and felt the scepter of climate change hanging heavily over his life and those around him. In exceptional circumstances he made this album with his grandfather's piano and some tape processing, placing himself and his voice front and centre and laying bare the pain of loss and the uncertainty of the future. There is hope and love folded into the music too, culminating in a beautiful moving album that stands as a career high point for one of the most inventive contemporary singer-songwriters out there.

Review: Library music maestro and original member of The Shadows Brian Bennett has a raft of sought-after records to his name, but this is surely one of the most prized. As with the best library music, the execution of the compositions is impeccable - like slipping on silken luxury leisurewear for your ears. The record has been a rich source for sampling over the years, so half the joy is in spotting licks and loops from your favourite tunes, but equally these disco-fied delicacies funk all on their own. Lovers of the Black Devil Disco Club vibe will be more than happy getting down to these tasteful cosmic groovers, unbelievably repressed for just the first time on Isle Of Jura since the original release in 1978.

Review: Here it is then. The UK's Cockney wide-boy with a penchant for old school croonerdom - or at least showmanship - delivers his long awaited sixth album, his most anticipated to date and the one that's set to cement him even further as a household name. Like the guy in the sharp, Rat Pack-esque suite you talk to down the local boozer, a guy whose eccentricities are only equaled by his (often volatile) life experiences, 'The Night Chancers' is all about observations of everyday outsiders. In many ways the tracks themselves are relatively formulaic - nobody is re-writing any of the recording rules here. Constant use of female backing vocals accentuating some of the traditional pop roots at play here. Nevertheless, everything is exceptionally well produced, with Dury's dulcet, spoken word storytelling as blunt and uncompromising as it is poetic.

Review: Ren Schofield's Container project has been quiet for a few years, but now makes a welcome return with the gnarled and freaky Scramblers. As ever a thick crust of noise is crucial to the delivery of the Container sound, but Schofield is sounding especially fired up on this new record. "Scrambler" is an outright banger that pushes electro into a strange new realm, while "Nozzle" follows suit with a cartoony palette of pings and zaps caked in distortion. This uptempo thrust maintains throughout, although the linearity of the beats gets interrupted on the artfully skippy "Queaser". No one sounds quite like Container, and long may that continue.

Review: Tireless diggers and world class reissue merchants Mr Bongo have done it again with this one. They discovered The Star Beams when one of their tracks was on a Disco Calypso compilation, then went on a mission to track down the original anymore material from the band, who turned out to be based in South Africa instead of the Carribean. The resulting record is a real gem - disco, funk and jazz all get chewed up and spat out across four fantastically timeless cuts of dance floor dynamite. "Disco Stomp" in particular you might already know as Theo Parrish has been dropping in his sets for time.
