Editor's Kutz #7
Editor's Kutz #7 (yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: EDITORSKUTZ 007. Rel: 31 Mar 16

Disco/Nu-Disco
VinylAddicted - "Shining Bright" (6:23)
Dan Johnson - "Love Affair" (6:18)
Get Down Edits - "Stop On By" (6:21)
Osmose - "Get Ready" (6:09)
Review: Saying that Editor's Kutz is going string would be an understatement, and although the label are only on their seventh outing to date, it feels like much longer that we've been graced with their inimitable style of disco editing. There's four cuts this time, a timeless bunch of disco groovers that have been re-moulded for the modern ear and its need for a steady but of 4/4. "Shining Bright" from VinylAddicted is any disco lover's dream come true, while Dan Johnson's "Love Affair" is a solid, fist-pumping bomb with one mighty bassline. On the B-side, "Stop On By" is more laid-back and cooler in its approach, but "Get Ready" is the shining star here, a deep, wet slice of dynamite funk that you could leave on repeat for hours on end.

NYM (VinylAddicted & Jean Claude Gavri edit)
Caught Up In The Rapture (PIXELATED Anita On Acid re-edit)
Day To Day (Alkalino edit)
Hidden Rung (The Silver Rider edit)
Review: Disco Meze is the latest platter served up by Sleazy McQueen's evergreen Whiskey Disco operation, and it's a various artists affair with contributions from Vinyladdicted, Jean Claude Gavri, Pixelated, Alkalino, and The Silver Rider. It's Vinyladdicted and Seaside Edits don Gavri who are first up with a lovingly filtered exercise in peak time disco with "NYM" - just wait for that synth solo to burst out!! Up next, Pixelated goes deep into the disco with the fine "Caught Up In The Rapture" which is pretty much an endless tease, whilst "Day To Day" from Alkalino could easily be laid over a bumping DJ tool. The Silver Rider's effort, "Hidden Rung", will appeal to fans of the Whitney tweak Genius of Time did a few years back.

Roberto Lodola - "Feeling Of The Sun" (Adriatic Seaview remix)
Alien Disco Sugar - "Sea Delights" (Aegean Seaview rework)
VinylAddicted - "Sun Shadow" (Balearic Seaview rework)
Disco Tech - "Cool Breeze" (Baltic Seaview rework)
Review: Editor's Kutz is back with a killer four-tracker, this time focusing on chillin' disco vibes. Sea viewing with relaxing and nostalgic mood is the basic theme. Starting things off with the Italian funk & afrodisco stallion d.j Roberto Lodola, who's recruited by the label for remixing his own "Marimba Do Mar" track since 1986. "Feeling Of The Sun" is full of original percussion by George Aghedo and a crispy rolling beat, stunning synths, rhodes and wonderful, carefree vocals by Antonia Coda. Next we have Alien Disco Sugar, hailing from Samos, the beautiful and sun-drenched Greek Island. "Sea Delights" is a mid-tempo chillin' rework on a track that we all love by William Pitt. Extra keyboards and bass chords make this rework so live and vivid, as Alien Disco Sugar enjoys his cruising on the Aegean Sea. Flip it for another tip by VinylAddicted, who's so keen on unearthing forgotten gems and reworking them with tenderness. This Balearic rework on a rare track since late 70s hosts some extra percussion by Roberto Lodola, while nice lyrics and a slo-mo beatline, accompanied by the sax and the female vocals will definitely take you by surprise. Leaving the Mediterranean to go north, where Disco Tech, based in Stockholm, closes this EP with an indulging Cool Breeze coming from the Baltic Sea. A careful and elegant retouch on the maxi version of Jeremy Spencer Band's homonymous track. Nothing better than a little bit of Fleetwood Mac to accomplish this 3rd "Editor's Kutz" mission!

Funkyjaws - "World Spin" (5:53)
Martin Hayes - "Eternia" (5:32)
Vinyladdicted - "Felt So Good" (6:28)
Review: Having previously established the Diggin Disco Deep formula - think sumptuous, sun-kissed deep house revisions of old disco and Balearic cuts - with a trio of 12" singles, the crew gathers for a fourth vinyl missive. Junktion gets the party started, layering eyes-closed electric piano lines and glistening guitars atop a suitably hazy deep house groove, before Funkyjaws moves further towards filter disco-house territory on the jazz guitar-clad shuffler "World Spin". On the reverse, you'll find some bumpin', locked-in loop funk from Martin Hayes (the DJ tool style "Eternia"), and the swinging, Balearic trance influenced positivity of Vinyladdicted's "Felt So Good".

Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee - "Stellar Dub" (5:11)
The Silver Rider - "Good Luvin' Baby" (7:19)
Doc Jam - "In Your Eyes" (5:28)
Review: There's usually plenty of A-grade material to be found in the Editor's Kutz EPs, and this sixth volume in the popular re-edit series is no different. Chief amongst these is The Silver Rider's "Good Lovin' Baby", a chunky disco-funk roller - slightly straightened out for contemporary dancefloors - that boasts a terrific, string-drenched breakdown. There's also something deliciously glassy-eyed about Doc Jam's "In Your Eyes", a tasty, house style loop-jam that expertly cuts up a familiar disco classic. Elsewhere, Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee provide a dubby take on Marcos Valle's Brazilian boogie classic "Estrelar" ("Stellar Dub"), and Vinyladdicted joins forces with Sleazy McQueen for a trip into groovy, AOR disco territory.

Stay 2Gether (Jean Claude Gavri Soulful Relief) (4:43)
Review: Number #5 in VinylAddicted's popular Editors Kutz series has been split into two parts with this first 12", arriving on rather dashing pink vinyl, featuring contributions from Luvless, Trujillo, Jean Claude Gavri and Sleazy McQueen who collaborates with the label boss. Indeed they call shotgun with a breezy disco number "Lonely D", complemented well by the star struck strut of the Luvless rework of "My Luvin". Trujillo's edit of "Get Up And Dance" has one of those grooves that will rescue any dancefloor whilst Monsieur Gavri offers some Soulful Relief with a nice closing tweak of an unknown disco cover of Al Green classic "Stay Together".

Disco/Nu-Disco
Eddie C - "Cut Chop Roll Skate"
Scott M - "Get Up"
VinylAddicted & SMQ - "Another Love"
Pontchartrain - "Get Over You"
Review: A fantastic foursome from boozy beat peddlers Whiskey Disco, the "Another Love" EP features label mates old and new. Eddie C ignites proceedings with a chubby electro boogie fused jam that pops and rolls with big disco bubbles and obese synth bass. Slide down deeper to meet label newbie Scott M who's done some serious dancefloor damage with a well-known Vernon Burch track. Further on we hit the EP title track, a Chi-town-style jacker with filtered flurries and a timeless disco house message. Finally we end on a well-spaced, loopy deep disco twist on France Joli's "Gonna Get Over You" courtesy of Pontchartrain.

Review: For anyone who missed out on the RSD 3LP release from Diggin' Deep Disco, cast your frustration aside as the label have elected to reissue that hefty selection of edits over three 12" samplers. Part One here - pressed on yellow vinyl no less - scopes out the contributions from Cassara, Loz Goddard, Vinyl Addicted and Mystep. Of the four it is still the latter's subtle Moodymannisms on the twilight house strut of "Get Over" that makes the biggest impression.

Review: Four years deep into its disco, beatdown and edit adventures, Smokecloud's status is nigh-on impeccable. Here we find them uniting four of their most creative craftsmen for four straight-up dancefloor pacifiers. Highlights include the sludgy slo-mo Edwin Starr on acid flavoured "Caught Up" and the Diana Ross homage that is the sun-skanked reggae party jam "CC Tribute" by VinylAddicted & SMQ. Instant smiles.

Dance The Blues Away (Em Vee edit) (5:55)
Review: Editor's Kutz on an RSD tip limited to 500 presses.... You just know this is going to be special. Apparently this has been work in progress since last October, but the hard work has paid off as an array of long lost cuts get treatments from the very best in the game. Case in point: Riccio's epic cosmic star gazer "Space Traveller" Em Vee's deep, dubby and hypnotic "Dance The Blues Away". More well-known classics to go under the knife include Jean Clause Gavri's stomping, emotion-soaked twist on a cover of Al Green with "Stay 2gether", Luvless's warm and loopy take on Stephanie Mills with "My Luvin" and JKriv's absolute dream-weaver shake up of Earth Wind & Fire's "Horizonte". Beautiful.

Review: Like its predecessor, Diggin Disco Deep #2 is an all-star affair, with all manner of established artists queuing up to contribute woozy deep house cuts infused with rich disco influences. This time round, it's a two-disc affair, with some eight tracks to enjoy. It represents great value, as there's little in the way of filler and plenty of highlights. Saine delivers some breezy, almost Balearic goodness in the shape of "Bronx Medium", while Junktion's "Sidewalk Salsa" joins the dots between early Latin house, mid '80s New York garage, and the kind of sumptuous contemporary deepness that sounds tailor-made for open-air parties. Best of all, though, is Funkyjaws' "World Spin", which comes blessed with some of the most evocative, jazz-inclined guitar solos you'll hear all year.

Let’s Make Love Tonight (Sleazy McQueen edit)
Love Massage (78Edits rework)
Let's Play around (Jean Claude Gavri & VinylAddicted edit)
Le Viole (Lillo Carillo balearic disco)
Review: This latest installment in the popular Editors Kutz re-edit series is packing some real heat, which is arguably unsurprising given the talent involved. Whiskey Disco don Sleazy McQueen steals the show with opener "Let's Make Love Tonight", a perfectly pitched chunk of sensual, horn-toting disco that should ignite dancefloors the world over this summer. 78 Edits take on "Love Massage" - a sexy head-nodder in his loopy, toe-tapping style - is almost as good, while Vinyl Addicted & Jean-Paul Gavri's sweet, delay-laden, dub disco tweak of "Can't Play Around" (here re-titled "Let's Play Around") is similarly impressive. As if that wasn't enough to impress, there's also some top drawer shuffling Balearic disco from Lillo Carillo's (the sultry "Le Viole").

Review: Pino D'Angio enjoyed an interesting career, finding fame in his native Italy as both an author and composer. Around the turn of the '80s, he released a number of fine disco cuts, including the tasty "Okay Okay". It boasted a gravelly rap in Italian, rubbery electric bass, twinkling electric piano solos, and just the right amount of bouncy disco swing. Here, Editor's Kutz have licensed the original, backing it up with a pair of fresh re-edits: a subtle, punchier touch-up from Sleazy McQueen and VinylAddicted, and a disco-house tweak from Lillo and Deaf Kick. Arguably best of all, though, is The Reflex's adjustment of Guido Minisky's re-edit of sax-laden, boogie era jazz-funk jam "Hey Ciao Tu".

Review: In recent years American imprint Kolour have fast become an institution of sorts, known for purveying quality grooves of the deeper spectrum. Their new compilation A Tale Of 2 Cities no doubt refers to both Detroit and Houston (the two cities from where the label is based) but rest assured that on this compilation their focus is absolutely global. There's a lot to cover on here, but we can tell you it's all good. Our highlights weren't limited to the bittersweet and emotive deepness of Ugly Drums & Lady BlackTronika's "Change The Key", Kiwi slo-mo house hero Frank Booker with his smooth Rhodes heavy groove "Unburdened", Canuck in Berlin Eddie C with the wicked low slung groove of "All Time Freak" and of course former Bent main man Simon Mills aka Napoleon who works more disco magic as always with the fabulous "Over & Done".

Review: Having only launched in 2015, no one was expecting DDD to lay out a Record Store Day bounty quite so soon. But boy are we glad they have. 500 copies on 180g triple vinyl from some of the nu disco and proper deep house scene's most respected and exciting individuals, it's a beautifully restrained collection of never-to-be-released-again grooves that's built to last. From the swooning Moodymannisms of MyStep's "Get Over" to the jazzy sprinkles and lighter footed filtered flavour of M Ono's "Little Fat Sparrow", these tracks will never tire. Jump on them before it's too late.
