1993 vs 1995 EP
1993 vs 1995 EP (12" + insert)
Cat: SMR 003. Rel: 05 Aug 20

Minimal/Tech House
Prejection (5:07)
Isolation (4:31)
Living Without You (6:33)
Be One (5:48)
Review: Here's something rather special from Parisian imprint Steppin' Motion: an EP of previously unheard tracks produced by Italian scene stalwart Enrico Mantini during the early stages of lengthy career. They don't say which is which, but we know that some of the cuts were recorded in 1993, while the others were laid to tape in 1995. Mantini first offers up "Prejection", an undeniably bass-heavy affair that peppers a Bleep-influenced, sub-heavy groove with echoing, New Jersey style organ stabs, before exploring a funkier vibe on the similarly low-slung and swinging "Isolation". Over on side B, "Living Without You" boasts chiming lead lines and a more lolloping, acid-flecked groove, while closing cut "Be One" is a lusciously warming, sax-laden shuffle through hybrid tech-house/deep house pastures. It's a fittingly fine finale.

Review: Long-serving Italian deep house producer Enrico Mantini has been in the game for a long time, first dropping bombs back in the early 90s, but his career has enjoyed a powerful second wind in the past few years with appearances on Half Baked, 4 Lux and more besides. Having released the Inner Heights EP on PURISM earlier in 2017, Mantini returns with an album of immersive, tripped out grooves supposedly recorded live at Tresor in Berlin. The vibe is consistently deep, refined and just a little bit trippy for the minimal house crowd to go head first into.

Socials Distraction (6:16)
807 (6:32)
Luv N Hate (6:36)
Review: Much to the surprise of many younger audiences on here, Italy's Enrico Mantini is to Italy what the likes of Pepe Bradock and DJ Gregory are to French house music. Legends. Since the early 90s, Mantini's tunes for imprints like the legendary UMM proved fundamental to the development of the scene, and to the birth of what we now refer to as 'deep' or 'tech' house. Since the end of the noughties, Mantini has gotten back to the studio and, in the process, released some pretty banging dance trax to teach the youngsters a thing or two about 'swing'. Out through the fledgling Detroit Side, from Ireland, "Socials Distraction" is a fuming house joint with a masterfully constructed percussion that puts the 'm' in 'minimal'. On the flipside, "807" is a bumpy house trax laid bare and full of jacking funk direct from the source, while the title tune "Luv N Hate" gets deeper than deep thanks to a dreamy palette of washed-up melodies and mild-mannered beats. Gorgeous.

Try To Get Out Of This (9:21)
What U Do To Me (5:54)
Dub Vandalo (5:41)
Review: The Purism label has already worked plenty with Enrico Mantini, but this time he's brought a friend along to help represent the Bologna-based team. Flavio Vecchi sounds right at home co-steering "Try To Get Out Of This", a devastatingly simple and deadly deep cut for heavy lidded house heads to get lost in the smoke machine to. Whether early in the evening or very very late, this is a big tune. "What U Do To Me" finds Nudge opening up the B side with a dreamy breakbeat house flavour for the after party crowd, and then "Dub Vandalo" maintains the stripped back but utterly punchy approach that makes this whole record so damn effective.

Hypnotizer (Virtual Hypnosis) (5:52)
Hypnotizer (Nostalgic All track) (5:42)
Hypnotizer (Da Groov' Moov mix) (5:35)
Review: Portugal's Assemble Music return with more carefully curated house music - this time courtesy of Italian veteran Enrico Mantini. For those who don't know, Mantini is internationally renowned as one of the founders of the deep house sound. Making his debut in the music industry nearly three decades ago, he's since appeared on cult labels such as UMM and Smoothsounds, runs the wicked Veniceberg Records and these days is an acclaimed mastering engineer. Originally released in 1995, the Hypnotizer EP gets a worthy reissue here and it still sounds as good as it did 23 years ago, we must say. From the old school swing of the Virtual Hypnosis mix, through to the deep and sexy late night mood lighting on the Nostalgic All track - don't sleep on this highly sought after classic.

Nudge - "Howl012.2" (6:26)
616 - "Howl012.3" (8:41)
Enrico Mantini - "Howl012.4" (5:54)
Review: Minimal house heroes Verrina & Ventura aka Howl Ensemble return, with the twelfth edition of their eponymous imprint and they are joined by some current Italian scene favourites. The boss duo step up first to represent, on the deep and rolling hypnotism of "Howl012.1" (the rest of the track titles follow in suit) followed by a funky, dusty deep house jam by Bologna's Nudge - which will appeal to fans of the Robsoul sound. On the flip, Brindisi's 616 follows up a great release on Manitou last year with his offering; an infectious, swing-fuelled tech house tool in the vein of iO Mulen or Jack Wickham. Finally, be prepared for some classic rave unearthed on the euphoric and uplifting "Howl012.4" by the legendary Enrico Mantini - most likely dug up out of his extensive archives.

Did Wanna Talk (0:41)
Many Years (5:46)
Waves Of Madness (7:15)
Review: Italian legend Enrico Mantini returns, this time for Gua Limited for the Many Years EP. The Pescara native serves up three cuts of trippy deep house that are quite worthy of your attention: this guy has been producing for 25 years under aliases such as Transitive Elements, The Fast Runna and Deep Choice so you're in good hands. Take for instance the tough swing and shuffle of opening groove "Did Wanna Talk" which uses that MPC to its full potential. The deep hypnotism of the title track gets some basic trance induction happening much in the same vein as Baby Ford while "Waves Of Madness" gets back to the stripped back rhythmicity again in great style, beneath a mind altering dialogue dealing in amnesia, electro compulsive therapy and all other kinds of psychiatric delights!

4 Strings Love
Unparalleled Consistency
Review: Italian producer Enrico Mantini has been his thing for longer than most, with releases reaching back to the early 90s when deep house was first surging in popularity in Italy. This new label Purism opens up with Mantini showing off his years of experience via some warm, undulating tracks that should sit comfortably with any lover of true deep house. "Inner Heights" is as laid back as they come, harmonious and buttery synths oozing over gentle machine beats. "4 Strings Love" is a peppier affair with a bumping rhythm and dubby melodic touches, and then "Unparalleled Consistency" strips everything back to a minimal core, showcasing the range within Mantini's learned palette.

Review: Dusseldorf tech house imprinted Gua Camole offers up some more Latin, summery tech house on its Gua Limited imprint this time with some stunning and reliable grooves. Tracks "Drink" by Masomenos or "Urself" by Enrico Martini will satisfy fans of Desolat and Fuse London. Wheres theres the more underground flavours of "Simonya" courtesy of Edward, known for hsi releases on White or Giegling. Label head Gua Camole himself closes proceeding with some mid noughties style minimal house on "Monsieur Schmitt"

Low End Walker
Needin U
Review: Nomadic London events crew Half Baked settled nicely into life as a record label last year, issuing 12"s from Birdsmakingmachine and Mike Shannon after launching with a split release featuring Le Loup , Yakine and Seuil. There's a sense of expectation surrounding the label then, and it's nice to see standards maintained on their first release of 2014, with Italian DJ and producer Enrico Mantini behind the buttons. There's a sense of pedigree that comes with Mantini, who has been producing since the early '90s and his class shines through on the three productions on Overflowing, with "Low End Walker" a considered highlight.

Just A Dream (1993 original mix)
Flow With Me (1993 original mix)
Man In The World (1992 original mix)
Get Infatuation (1992 unreleased)
Review: Before there was the Analogue Cops or John Swing there was Enrico Mantini - an Italian house producer which in 10-plus years of releasing music, sounds as contemporary now as he did in '92. The Rough Times EP brings four of his earlier productions forward a decade, starting with "Just A Dream" originally released in '93. Drawn pads slide in and out of busy drum machine arrangements, while moist vocal shouts add some sexy swing. "Flow With Me" - also released in '93 - is a simple drum track of a basic kick drum and bass combo, with sketchy snares and the odd crash cymbal thrown in. "Man In The World" from '92 sees more traditional 909 sequences swing to Yankee stadium Rhodes and cut vocals, while the previously unreleased "Get Infatuation" is cruise piece machine funk with a 10 year analogue hum you can almost taste.

Can't Take (5:25)
Review: Four smacking deep house cuts from Enrico Mantini, whose nostalgia-tinged glasses are cast all the way back to 1992, when the bulk of his 'unreleased gems' were produced. All set to tape and nearly forgotten, the vibe of these bits is unparalleled, recalling the rough n' readiness of our two favourite Todds, Terry and Edwards. 'U Feel It' waterfalls through resampled soul sample cut-ups, while 'Loca' continues to bubble outwards via a restrained organ and 808 hue. Sexy, Mr. Fingery styled basses ensue on the cloudier 'Life Wine', while 'Can't Take' closes on dubbier and grottier territories.

Review: Originally released back in 1994, this was Italian house veteran Enrico Mantini's last appearance on UMM before Flying Records ceased to exist. One of his most highly sought after releases on the secondhand market, it has been played by underground heroes such as Zip over the years. On the A side, we have the deep and emotive mood music of "What U Want" (2021 Late Nite cut) with its classic Stateside swing - a true zeitgeist of a golden era. Over on the flip, new school heroes Chris Stussy & Djoko remix get onboard for a modern reshape followed by the original.

Review: Dorian and Olaf's Raum Musik has just turned 20. Yes, we feel old, but we also feel privileged to be able to bring this tidy compilation to you; after all, we have been fans of the imprint over the years, and it has been a solid source of innovative house and techno sounds for its entire lifespan. For these two decades of raving, they've put together sounds form both new faces and favourite oldies, kicking off with Franco Cinelli's raucous "Cyrux", a hybrid house tune that will suit any type of DJ, and bringing more and more vibes through with peeps like Phil Evans, John Dimas, and the mighty Lee Burton - the latter being a constant source of BADNESS. If you're keen on some ethereal house business with an experimental edge, then this is the double-pack for you.
