Review: Utrecht label Blackout first released Edge by German production team Neonlight and Wintermute as a five track digital EP back in March. The transition to the vinyl format for this 12" release sees the trio's work lose three of the tracks but the remaining two are potent enough to satisfy the needs of those craving some darker arts. Up top "Influx" rolls to a traditional drum and bass groove but Neonlight and Wintermute do it so well, but it's "Guinea Pig" that will delight the freakier selectors out there. Here the trio carve up all manner of broken beats, ragged percussion and razor sharp synths with the sort of aplomb that leaves you gasping.

Review: Having launched the Disco Bloodbath imprint with the killer house throwback of That Ain't Right, label boss Damon Martin is back with some more full-bodied and red-blooded house heat, heavy on the analogue sounds and locked into powerful grooves. "Feel It" has an electro grumble to the bassline, but the beat is pure vintage jack, with a deadly reverb on the clap and a subtle shuffle that slots the hits in perfectly. "Wintermute" opts for a more flamboyant swing, but avoids standard 90s house tropes and finds a rougher kind of funk to play with that sits neatly with the flecks of Detroit synths. Hardway Bros get into a more cosmic frame of mind with their "Gravity Well" remix of "Wintermute", slowing into a disco groove and letting the synths carry you to the heavens.

Review: German duo Neonlight have been carefully crafting a unique rainbow neuro signature over the years on labels such as Lifted, Bad Taste, Eatbrain, and Close 2 Death for almost ten years now. Their debut album is long overdue... And boy it's been worth the wait. A concept trip around the lesser known galaxies, we're treated to their full narrative spectrum that's soundtracked by pure cinemtica ("Neon City"), creepy techy rollers ("Microbots"), manic tripletty funk ("Triple B") and Vangelis-level synthtopia ("Bad Omen"). Musical, heavyweight, sci-fi: this really is a serious piece of work. D&B albums like this don't come around very often.

Review: Given that they've now been bulldozing dancefloors with their distinctively dark, fizzing, tech-tinged take on drum & bass for nigh on 20 years, few will be surprised to hear that Ed Rush and Optical's contribution to the FabricLive series is a bombastic, full-throttle affair. Packed to the rafters with growling basslines, skittish jungle rhythms, subtle nods to rave and nightmarish textures, FabricLive 82 is little less than a lesson in D&B's murkier margins. While there are few surprises - the duo found their niche years ago and have been happily working it ever since - it's nevertheless a hugely enjoyable excursion, somehow squeezing in 39 tracks along the way.

Review: Dark D&B favourites Blokhe4d have been associated with Bad Company UK's Bad Taste Recordings imprint for some time, so it's no surprise to find them at the helm for the fifth edition of the Bad Taste compilation series (for the record, they were also behind volume 4). Musically, Bad Taste Volume 5 bears few surprises, but plenty of balls-out D&B rollers laden with twisted noises, addictive stabs (see Telekenisis' "Parallel Universe") and, of course, bowel-bothering basslines. Highlights include Blokhe4d and Receptor's decidedly old skool "Bass Dust" and Dubapes spooky dubstep roller "In The Jungle", but in truth there's very little in the way of filler.

Review: For their first ever LP, Matthias & Modex's Foundation label presents INTRO's Odyssey Of Shifting Emotions, a collection of unreleased tracks recorded in the early '90s by Madrid-based legends Francisco & Nacho Sotomayor, almost entirely released on the now defunct Quality Madrid imprint. Featuring some seriously celestial expressions in acid trance like on 'No My Friend' or 'Wiz' that are a true zeitgeist of a golden era in electronic music, through to the progressive breaks of 'Hiperaccessibility', to the slamming peak time euphoria of 'Wintermute' and the loved-up ambient house of 'Mblem'. For the uninitiated, Odyssey Of Shifting Emotions is a fantastic.. intro.. to some underrated heroes of the Madridillian scene.
