Review: U2's latest album finds the iconic rock band re-recording some of their back catalogue songs. The whole record has been produced by The Edge and in all there are 40 tunes coming in companion to famous bespectacled front man Bono's memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, from last year. The record took two years to record during the pandemic and after reviewing demos arrangements were tweaked and in some cases reinterpreted and often redone in a more acoustic setting. Fans have received the album well and it is fair to say there is plenty to like about it.

Review: In many ways it's hard to get a fix on U2's 90s period. It's as though they folded time between their breakthrough 80s albums and the comfortable middle age period post the turn of the millennium. However, Zooropa remains a wildly exciting album which saw Bono and his buddies weren't afraid to mess with the formula and embrace what was happening outside of their mainstream rock bubble. There are some surprising risks taken and yet their gargantuan song craft remains undiminished. On this 30th anniversary pressing there's also some bonus remixes tucked onto side four, bringing Oakenfold's equally supersized Perfecto sound into the mix.

Review: Has it really been 40 years since we saw Bono clad in a black sleeveless tee and brown waistcoat, mullet-topped and leading his band of equally early-80s looking musos to the rooftop of a Dublin building to perform one of their finest songs? Well, based on this limited edition release, the answer is clearly 'yes'.

There are a lot of different phases to dig into, but if you want the exhaustive run through his breakout years, look no further than the Hits 1 and 2 collections. Put together by Warner in 1993, as their relationship with the famously strong-willed artist was going south, this pair of compilations feature every hit that matters from 1979 through to 1992. Review: Ace Records continue their series of compilations from Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, tapping into unique niches of British music culture under titles like English Weather and The Tears Of Technology to arrive at this latest joint, Fell From The Sun. This is a specific trip into the downtempo, after hours sounds prevalent in 1990-1991, as the acid house wave broke and Balearic selector ethics seeped into studio practice. The selections are absolutely on point, from The Orb's majestic remix of Primal Scream's 'Higher Than The Sun' to Saint Etienne's own moody roller, 'Speedwell'. It's bouncy and boundlessly optimistic as well as being supremely chill, absolutely of its time but still ringing with an eternal charm that feels ready for a revival. Let this compilation be your guide.

Review: We seem to be in the middle of a run of Prince reissues right now, with the focus being on those he released through Warner. The relationship eventually went sour and Prince knocked out plenty of records in quick succession to see out his deal but that didn't dint their commercial success. Albums from the entire 16-year period are being put out into the ether on vinyl and now it's the turn of 1988's Lovesexy, which came on the heels of Sign O' The Times and might be the last of his imperial phase. 'Alphabet Street' is the most noted of the singles here in an album full of seriously steamy funk sounds.

Review: The Purple One had many different official aliases but in 1995 came one of his best/worst - he was asked to be known by the unpronounceable symbol shown on the album cover of this record. Known amongst fans as the "love symbol" it was credited with this album, The Gold Experience, his impressive seventeenth studio long player overall. The whole record was produced by the legendary singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist himself and as with most of his works it reached the upper end of the Billboard chart. Standouts include the likes of 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the World', 'I Hate U', and 'Gold'. One of many essential albums in his oeuvre.

Review: In the wake of her shock passing, it is of course a logical time to reconnect with the incredible legacy of music Sinead O'Connor left behind. It all began with The Lion And The Cobra, a brilliant jewel of late 80s rock and pop which announced the beloved Irish singer and her distinctive artistry to the world. There's a remarkable range to the album, even in its biggest hits, as the breezy AOR jangle of 'Mandinka' gives way to the epic orchestrations of 'Troy' before the sprightly synth funk of 'I Want Your (Hands On Me)'. It's a classic through and through, absolutely of its time but a fitting reminder of how incredibly gifted O'Connor was and how much she will be missed.
