Review: Kiefer Shackleford is back on Stones Throw with more of his elevated beatdowns and dextrous piano flex. The LA-based artist first cropped up on Leaving Records back in 2017 and now he comfortably slides into his fifth album in a lean, sun-soaked dream of drums slung way down low and right to the back, leaving more room for his illustrious keys and synths to pirouette over the top. It's a simple recipe, but the secret is in the ingredients. The drums shuffle and slide with crooked flair, and the melodies burst skywards whether it's classic piano, woozy Rhodes or fluttering modulations Shackleford chooses to sing through.

Review: Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, the Compton-based rapper's first album since 2012's major label debut, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, has been receiving rave reviews. In truth, it's not hard to see why. Imaginative, soulful, and blessed with the looseness of live performance (a result of the use of jazz-minded live players as much as anything else), it sounds like the kind of album that may one day be hailed as a hip-hop classic. Review: In God We Trust is the second album from East Cost hip-hop group Brand Nubian. Industrial and boomy - the warring kind of hip-hop one might expect to hear blasted from a makeshift soundsystem at an insurrectionary revolution - the album, following their debut 'One For All' in 1993, hears the best creative synergies of its members Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar. Equating god to money is a core principle of irony at the root of much rap, and here it's on full display; 'Meaning Of The 5%' and 'Black Star Lines' are among the highlights in this vein, with lines such as "black man, change your demeanour" and "the gods must be crazy," highlighting the rightful suspicion towards Mammonism in the black consciousness of the US.

Review: The debut full-length from George Kusunoki Miller, once better known as the YouTube characters Filthy Frank and Pink Guy, came after a poised transition to move his internet celebrity status and legions of avid followers over to a rebranded, sincere musical project under the moniker of Joji. Following on from 2017's promising In Tongues EP, the Ballads 1 LP would drop in 2018 and take the entire cloudrap scene by storm with its nuanced use of vaporwave-inflected trap production, drugged out R&B and melancholic penmanship. Serving as the launching pad for the stratospheric heights the project has reached since, this five year anniversary edition arrives with new artwork in a gatefold sleeve, and boasts some of the most essential cuts from both Miller's catalogue and internet hip-hop as a mass entity, including 'Slow Dancing In The Dark', 'Test Drive' and 'Yeah Right', while also featuring production credits from Clams Casino and a guest-verse from Trippie Redd.

Leather Blvd is a woozy and lo-fi late-night trip through a range of narcotic atmospheres. The raps range from slurred and drenched in reverb to more crisp and well-defined as tracks range from short and sweet to epic and sprawling. There is a real intimacy to this record as well as a borrowing from jazz as these tracks unfurl and slowly make their way into your affections. It is another great coming together of this contemporary pair.
