Review: Aparatec is 21-year-old electro wonder kid Ryan Lee West. From Leicester, England, Aparatec is influenced by impressionists like Claude Debussy and modern electronic artists such as Autechre and Venetian Snares. His own signature style is a playful and brutal mix of electronic beats and emotive synth string arrangements. This is music that touches all senses - irresistible and impossible to predict.

The Leonids Strings (8:05)
Into The Memories (7:33)
Review: For his first release of 2018, Hiroshi Watanabe has reworked one of the unarguable highlights of his 2016 album Multiverse. In its original form, "The Leonids" was a soaring slice of futurist techno perfection rich in bubbly synthesizer melodies and sweeping strings. It's this orchestrated aspect of the track that's explored in greater detail on "The Lenoid Strings", a beat-less, neo-classical string quartet cover that heightens the original version's rush-inducing positivity. It's stunning and - as both Derrick May and Watanabe have proved in recent DJ sets - sounds great when dropped over the top of the album mix. On the flip, Watanabe dusts down the drum machines and synthesizers to deliver "In To The Memory", a poignant and melancholic chunk of sci-fi techno deepness.

Esoteric Thing (feat Derrick May)
Review: Derrick May's Transmat, a legendary label that has been producing some of the best, most mind-altering electronic music since the late 80s, returns with a highly unexpected album by Luxembourg's Francesco Tristano, an artist who has always had one foot in electronic music and the other in neo-classical. Although this comes as a surprise, it's easy to understand why May would want to associate himself with such a talent; the producer's music is both so varied and well-consrtucted that it must be a dream come true for any artist to remix. In fact, aside from Tristano's own masterful productions on here, from the opening "Sakamoto: Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" to "Rocco's Bounce" or "Xokolad", Derrick May himself appears across four tunes, all of them reminiscent of his Detroit golden days, and it's great to hear that he hasn't switched to an all-digital set-up. In fact, all the sounds on this superb album sound organic, full of life and, although the arrangements recall many of May's classic tunes, there's something new and compelling about them. Recommended!

Set Me Free (6:02)
Don't Stop (5:02)
Autumn Blues (5:43)
Review: Since first emerging in the late 1980s, Peter Elmaloglou has been one of the mainstays of the Australian techno scene. Derrick May is a fan and has decided to offer Elmaloglou the opportunity to showcase his wares on Transmat. A-side "Set Me Free" offers up an impressive fusion of soft-touch European tech-house tropes (fluid, delay-laden synthesizer motifs, tactile beats etc.), Chicago style psychedelic acid lines and the kind of rumbling, elongated bass tones that were once a feature of Kevin Saunderson's late '80s/early '90s work as Reese. Over on side B, "Don't Stop" is undulating, hypnotic and minimalist in tone, with percussion that both hisses and clicks, while "Autumn Blues" sees him pepper a squeezable techno groove with heady ambient chords and glassy-eyed electronic lead lines.

Rhythm Is Rhythm - MS
Long Ago - A Relic
Long Long Ago - Another Relic
Longer Than Long Ago - A Relic
Review: With techno celebrating its 25th birthday in 2010, Rush Hour pick an opportune time to reissue some vintage Derrick May. Here we see four slabs of raw analogue machine funk from the outspoken producer and DJ - one under his Rhythm Is Rhythm alias, with three .relics' squeezed onto the B Side. "MS" predates the current vogue for stripped back house and techno music by some two decades, while the so-called .relics' on the flip offer a fascinating insight into May's nascent output. Simply put, this is a must for all Detroit completists and another opportunity to recognise the sheer importance of Derrick May in shaping the modern electronic music landscape.

Paradox (4:30)
Review: Since launching their career with a hypnotic 12" on Crosstown Rebels back in 2014, Swiss duo Azimute has done their own thing, establishing their own label in order to further their cause. Clearly, Derrick May was impressed, because he's decided to put out their latest track, "Paradox". In many ways, it's an unusual release for Transmat, as it contains little of the label's trademark retro-futurism, and instead delivers the kind of restless, late night techno grooves more associated with German imprints. It is, though, rather good, building in intensity throughout via creepy riffs, unsettling electronics and a moody bassline.

No UFOs (D-mix) (8:19)
Review: Juan Atkins takes another dive into his vast back catalogue and offers up a new pressing of one his most influential early works, second single 'Night Drive (Thru Babylon)'. A punchy, star-gazing electro workout with crunchy drums, acid-style electronic squelches and a typically evocative spoken vocal, it's like an Afro-Futurist's take on Kraftwerk. The nod to the Robots is even more obvious on the more vocoder-heavy 'Time Space Transmat' (a rework of 'Night Drive' featuring input from Cybotron partner Rick Davis) and the 'D-Mix' of previous single 'No UFO's', a revision that some have argued drew up the Motor City techno blueprint (crucially, the beat is 4/4 rather than an electro one, the first example of this on a Model 500 record). A genuinely essential record.

Review: New Aural Discourse holds four fresh, futuristic and far-sighted British takes on Detroit techno by arguably one of electronic music's best-kept secrets. This is N.A.D.'s comeback release after over 25 years and it's a proud salute to the classic sounds of the Motor City. Starting off with the hi-tech soul of "Ontologic", they're then into some UR style intergalactic transmissions on "A Sense Of Finitude". The flip features what we thought was a highlight in the form of "Transmatting" with its complex drum programming, funky bassline and evocative strings: it sounds like an old Transmat (hey, hang on!) style jam. Initially, the duo of Tony Thorpe and Mustafa Ali released one album entitled The Dawn Of A New Age, which was on sale for little more than a week before it vanished from record store shelves. Decades after it was created, their forgotten debut album became something of a 'must-have' for electronic music collectors.

Review: 2016 is going to be Transmat's 30th anniversary. Derrick May's Detroit institution is going to celebrate in style with a bunch of new releases this year starting with this new one by Tokyo's Hiroshi Watanabe. The title track nails the Transmat sound perfectly in all its high tech and soulful glory. "The Leonids" is evocative with its emotive strings and epic piano melody; you could just imagine May's joy when he first heard this one. On the flip "Soul Tranitions" is just that; there's one razor sharp synth lead on this one, check it out. Finally "Aperture Synthesis" is the perfect combination of "Strings of Life" and "French Kiss" if we've ever heard it!
