Review: 2016 is going to be Transmat's 30th anniversary. Derrick May's Detroit institution is going to celebrate in style with a bunch of new releases this year starting with this new one by Tokyo's Hiroshi Watanabe. The title track nails the Transmat sound perfectly in all its high tech and soulful glory. "The Leonids" is evocative with its emotive strings and epic piano melody; you could just imagine May's joy when he first heard this one. On the flip "Soul Tranitions" is just that; there's one razor sharp synth lead on this one, check it out. Finally "Aperture Synthesis" is the perfect combination of "Strings of Life" and "French Kiss" if we've ever heard it!

Paradox (4:30)
Review: Since launching their career with a hypnotic 12" on Crosstown Rebels back in 2014, Swiss duo Azimute has done their own thing, establishing their own label in order to further their cause. Clearly, Derrick May was impressed, because he's decided to put out their latest track, "Paradox". In many ways, it's an unusual release for Transmat, as it contains little of the label's trademark retro-futurism, and instead delivers the kind of restless, late night techno grooves more associated with German imprints. It is, though, rather good, building in intensity throughout via creepy riffs, unsettling electronics and a moody bassline.

The Leonids Strings (8:05)
Into The Memories (7:33)
Review: For his first release of 2018, Hiroshi Watanabe has reworked one of the unarguable highlights of his 2016 album Multiverse. In its original form, "The Leonids" was a soaring slice of futurist techno perfection rich in bubbly synthesizer melodies and sweeping strings. It's this orchestrated aspect of the track that's explored in greater detail on "The Lenoid Strings", a beat-less, neo-classical string quartet cover that heightens the original version's rush-inducing positivity. It's stunning and - as both Derrick May and Watanabe have proved in recent DJ sets - sounds great when dropped over the top of the album mix. On the flip, Watanabe dusts down the drum machines and synthesizers to deliver "In To The Memory", a poignant and melancholic chunk of sci-fi techno deepness.

Icon (Vince Watson remix & reconstruction) (9:49)
Kao-Tic Harmony (Vince Watson remix & reconstruction) (9:36)
Review: Vince Watson is arguably one of a handful of European producers whose approach to techno matches the original ethos of the sound's Detroit pioneers. It's probably for this reason that Derrick May asked him to "remix and remodel" two timeless Rhythim Is Rhythim classics. Pleasingly, Watson's versions of 1991's "Icon" and "Kao-Tic Harmony" (the latter an early collaboration between May and Carl Craig) are both superb, getting just the right balance between respecting the original versions whilst bringing something new to the party. While the evocative, string-drenched version of "Icon" is superb, it is the fizzing, sci-fi fuelled melodiousness of Watson's "Kao-Tic Harmony" revision that really hits home hard. Naturally, both versions sound like breezy Motor City classics.

Stella
Review: Derrick May's seminal Transmat opens it's storied book on a new chapter with his record from French producer Karim Sahraoui. Founded way back in 1986, Transmat was one of the original wave of Detroit techno labels alongside Juan Atkins' Metroplex and Kevin Saunderson's KMS imprint. Although KMS has been releasing music quite consistently over the past few years and Metroplex returned to life last year with a collaboration between Juan Atkins and Mark Ernestus, Transmat has been dormant for a few years now, with Greg Gow's Twilight Soul EP in 2011 being the label's last release. Sahraoui's Eternal Life EP Part 1 is the start of a new chapter in the Transmat story devoted to "multiplying emerging artists' productions," done with classic artwork recalling Transmat's early days, with each record delivering "modern interpretations of Transmat's distinctive sounds." The two tracks from the French producer live up to such billing and then some, with "Stella" filled with star gazing Utopian bliss.

Chuuch (6:27)
No Enemy No Table (6:56)
Here To There (6:55)
Review: Hot on the heels of the release of their first album in 17 years, Underground Resistance affiliates Scan 7 return with one of their funkiest and most accessible EPs to date. Opener "Chuuch" is a riotous and righteous affair that sees main men TrackMasta Lou and Mr Hooper peppering a funky techno beat with killer samples from a wild and celebratory gospel disco classic. It's one of those tracks that will have even the most miserable clubber throwing their hands skywards in celebratory release. The pair continues on a similar vein on the organ-driven gospel techno stomp of "No Enemy No Table", before moving in a deeper and more relaxed direction on the equally as impressive "Here To There".

Dimension Seven (6:04)
Return (5:43)
Onward (5:48)
Review: Chicago's Jon Hester spent years as a dancer before he even touched the decks and that shows in his floor facing cuts for Transmat, which follows other high grade outings on taste-making techno labels Dystopian, Deeply Rooted and Rekids. Infectious rhythm is at the core of Hester's work and all the tracks here: "Dimension Seven" is epic techno that surges to the cosmos on warm solar synths and chattery percussion from the Windy City. "Return" is deeper and infused with a warm sense of machine soul then "Onward" has some fantastic drum programming and pinging kick drums that sweep you up and along for a most thrilling ride.

Set Me Free (6:02)
Don't Stop (5:02)
Autumn Blues (5:43)
Review: Since first emerging in the late 1980s, Peter Elmaloglou has been one of the mainstays of the Australian techno scene. Derrick May is a fan and has decided to offer Elmaloglou the opportunity to showcase his wares on Transmat. A-side "Set Me Free" offers up an impressive fusion of soft-touch European tech-house tropes (fluid, delay-laden synthesizer motifs, tactile beats etc.), Chicago style psychedelic acid lines and the kind of rumbling, elongated bass tones that were once a feature of Kevin Saunderson's late '80s/early '90s work as Reese. Over on side B, "Don't Stop" is undulating, hypnotic and minimalist in tone, with percussion that both hisses and clicks, while "Autumn Blues" sees him pepper a squeezable techno groove with heady ambient chords and glassy-eyed electronic lead lines.
