Review: With a snaffled picnic basket under one arm and an MPC in the other, Yogi (AKA Sam Rose) invites us to "Jellystoned Park" to discover why he is smarter than your average beat-maker. It's the little-known producer's first solo set - or at least the first of his lone albums to be pressed onto vinyl - and an unassumingly impressive affair at that. Utilising a wide range of ear-pleasing samples (from quirky easy listening and AOR, to jazz, funk-rock and folk) and his own skittish, often off-kilter hip-hop beats, Rose delivers a series of short sketches, interludes and blink-and-you-miss-them workouts that tend towards the stoned, bleary-eyed end of the spectrum. The result is a hugely entertaining collection of instrumental hip-hop jams that's a cut above many of its competitors.

Review: Interestingly, having reinvented themselves in the 80s with the help of Trevor Horn and various other members of the team, accidentally spawning the pioneering legends Art of Noise in the process, when we come to 2023, a trip back to their 70s heyday is more what the doctor ordered. With their guitarist Steve Howe at the production helm they are fancy technology-free, sounding as live as ever, and have restoered everything from the long songs - two of the 13 here top nine minutes - to the old logo and sci-fi artwork. They've even got a new Jon in to replace the old one. and Davidson does a good job of impersonating Anderson, apparently with the help of a female singer double tracking his vocals. You don't need a PhD to work out this is a nostalgic trip, but as attempts to relive former glories go we have heard a lot worse.

Talk about albums that make you realise how fine the line is between 'must buy' and 'lost forever'. Everyone who heard the first instalment in this series fell head over heels in love not just with the music itself, but the yarn it comes with. JCR was a sub-label of D-Vine Spirituals, both run and founded by none-other than the Baptist Pastor Juan D. Shipp. A radio DJ, Air Force veteran and major figure in the Memphis gospel and soul scenes, he set to trying to address the sound quality differences between the major sacred soul labels and smaller local operations. In doing so, the boss met Sun Records artist Clyde Leoppard, and found his Tempo Recording Studio. Together they would record more than 75 acts there, over 13 years. Those tapes would then be found, decades later, in a shack outside Olive Branch, Mississippi.170 or so reels pored over and restored to create this album, and its predecessor.

Review: Having delivered a string of loosely themed collections of extended mixes and 12" versions from the 1980s, the long-running NOW compilation strand has launched a new series focusing on music released in specific years across the decade. 1980, the inaugural collection, is relatively light on pop, 'alternative' and new wave extended mixes (though OMD, Spandau Ballet, Sparks and UB40 all appear), but big on soaring disco hits, crossover club classics and chart-bothering dance numbers from the dawn of the decade of Thatcher and Reagan. Review: Always impeccably curated and sumptuously presented, the seemingly endless Soul Jazz compilation series turns its attention to first generation punk and post-punk, with the years 1997-1981 their relatively strict boundaries. A short space of time, perhaps, but one that witnessed a massive outpouring of original, fresh sounds as the independent record label movement really got going. As you'd expect, this collects the best of the stuff that went under the mainstream radar - no Pistols or Clash here - but the quality level remains high. Jonny Moped's 'Everything Stops For Baby' is speedy and thrilling and very punk, sample lyric: "walking down the road with my incendiary device / Looking for an ear to blow it up with gelignite". 'O' Levels, meanwhile, set fire to the Surrey suburbs with 'East Sheen', all wiry guitars and couldn't give a toss backing vocals, but the double vinyl set also showcases the experimental advances that followed after punk, with 23 Skidoo's 'Last Words' proving to be the kind of gritty British funk that Section 25 and A Certain Ratio would be making their own shortly afterwards.
