Review: Miles Davis's Seven Steps to Heaven album came in 1963 and was recorded in two different studios at a vital time in his career. It was the first new work in a year (back then he had released thick and fast since debuting in 1950) and can be rightly thought to be the first time his second great quintet really came together and showed their mettle. The album got two Grammy nominations and is also noted for being the last time Davis mixed up standards with original works. It's one of his most expressive and well-played oeuvres. This special edition reissue has been remastered from the original analogue master tapes so sounds of the highest quality and is backed with detail, tone and definition.

With the rise of successful greatest hits albums, the label at the time pressured the young band to bring out a collection of previously released music, with then 12 songs featured here the result of collecting three songs per prior album that the band felt were their strongest. This album features some of the most beloved live songs by the band like 'Buck's Boogie'. It still sounds like a work well ahead of its time as it blends auto-tune singing and rapping seamlessly across the 11 tunes. Frequent collaborators Metro Boomin, Southside, TM88 and DJ Spinz handled production and The Weeknd guests on 'Low Life' with its day-lo synths, trap beats and swirling, late night and narcotic induced atmospheres. Now you can grab the accompanying tracks on neon pink vinyl, which features the vulnerable "You're A Fighter", celebratory 80s synth pop stomps of "Starcourt" and meditative charms of "The Ceiling Is Beautiful" amongst other nuggets of gold.
