Review: Times Are Ruff is back on Tommorow Is Now, Kid! with a whole album's worth of that fiery, soul-stewing business for deep house heads who want a little spice in their sauce. On one hand "Wingman" is a brash, stomping cut shaped out by snappy drums, but on the other it's a smooth Rhodes laden affair soaring to the sky - the best of both worlds. "Treehouse" is a more flowing affair peppered with illustrious instrumentation, "Funky Town" gets locked into the New Jersey swing and "In Between" cools things down with a sweet instrumental. "What About Samira" gets right back to it with a rattling jazz funk excursion, "Seven" takes things in a tougher electronic direction, "Behind The Curtain" gets reflective in its lingering chords and then "Nero Verde" finishes the bumper pack of jams off on a pointed, modernist house tip.

Review: Parisian duo Acid Arab are men with a plan: namely, to get friends from the house and techno scene to create tracks that mix the stripped-back intensity of analogue acid house with the intoxicating rhythms, sounds and instrumentation from the Orient. It's a devilishly simple formula, but one that offers plenty of scope for experimentation. The results, as showcased on this first compilation for Versatile, are rarely less than superb. From the Middle Eastern-goes-cosmic disco pulse of Professor Genius and Exotic post-punk shuffle of Hanaa Ouassim, to the ragged but humid stomp of I:Cube and thumping, psychedelic electronics of Renart, Acid Arab Collections is full of weird, wonderful and downright thrilling surprises.

Review: Seattle's Sublime Frequencies never fails to impress with their eclectic compilations from all ends of the globe, and they've done it again with this latest collection of obscure hits from the Iraqi pop dynasty, one end of the music spectrum which many collectors dream to be more knowledgeable about. With an unsurprising total of twenty songs, there's something in here for everyone, and although we can't even begin to start giving you details on the artists within, we certainly can pick out some hot tracks! The opener itself is pretty incredible, with wacky percussion shots going off like there's no tomorrow, but we also instantly fell in love with "Bezikh Introduction", a track which can serve any purpose and fit in just about any DJ set. Recommended, as per usual! Don't miss it!

Review: Before a hard line religious government seized control of Sudan via a 1989 coup, the country had one of the richest musical scenes in the world. This fine two-disc compilation from Ostinato brilliantly chronicles the various strands of this scene, focusing especially on music made in the capitol city, Khartoum. Fired by tum tum and Nubian rhythms, the set shuffles through the Arabian-inspired violin and accordion-heavy orchestral music of the 1970s, synthesizer and drum machine-driven cuts of the 1980s, and more polished later recordings produced by local artists who had fled persecution in the 1990s. There's naturally much to enjoy throughout, including a clutch of rare live recordings and some of the most beguilding, heart-felt songs ever to come out of East Africa.

Review: Ostinato Records is still in its infancy but the label has well and truly impressed us since they first launched last year. That initial string of reissue material from Cape Verde was sensational to say the least, and we're doubly impressed to see that the label heads have now sprawled out to Sudan, a corner of Africa that is comparatively less known in terms of music. With 16 tunes that have been selected for this essential double album, there is so much to explore and take in, especially given that this music is not something to be consumed superficially; let's the rhythms take you, revel in them, learn your surroundings. This is you being launched in Sudan. Hotly tipped!
