Review: Black Rainbows is the latest sure-to-be-a-smash album by Corinne Bailey Rae. Her fourth to date, Bailey Rae ups the conceptual ante, channelling recent material inspirations - referencing the objects and artworks collected by artist Theaster Gates at the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago - to produce a musical, visual, and literary exploration of Black culture, history, and identity. Across ten tracks, Bailey Rae recounts her encounters with the many artifacts - books, records, sculptures, and photographs - at the Arts Bank. From the upbeat and funky 'New York Transit Queen' - a tribute to the first African American Miss New York Transit in 1948 - to the haunting and atmospheric 'Loophole', inspired by the story of Harriet Jacobs, an enslaved woman who hid in a tiny attic space for seven years to escape her master - these songs carry the rightous weight of history with them, all while nodding to genres from city pop to gospel to Afrofuturism.
