Review: A favourite of John Peel's - they ended recording no less than five sessions for his revered show - the Hebden Bridge-formed band saw success in the 1980s with a heady mix of rhythmically-propelled post-punk and Hartley's distinctively wired vocals. Review: The 1982 glam-rock swan song for British rock group Roxy Music sees another limited reissue, a departure from the more edgy and abrasive sounds the group went for prior. The word that people constantly use to describe 'Avalon' is mature, in multiple senses of the word. At its core, the record is sensual and seductive make-out material, a 10 track package pining on romance named after the fantastical romantic gesture of King Arthur's body being sent to the titular island. It's plain to see why 'Avalon' is the band's most acclaimed and influential project, spawning off other New Wave acts like Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and Tears for Fears. 'More Than This', the title track, has stood the test of time and is still playlisted and cited as one of the greatest British New Wave tracks of all time. 'Avalon' is accessible, seductive and, without doubt, a classic.

Review: In hindsight, the summer of 1997 saw the release of some genuinely brilliant and ground-breaking dance albums - not least Chemical Brothers' second studio set, Dig Your Own Hole. As this expanded 25th anniversary edition proves, the album was the musical high point of the often painfully shallow big beat movement - a thrill-a-minute ride that races between funk-fuelled, break-heavy hits ('Block-Rockin' Beats'), rock-tinged heaviness (the title track), fuzz-fuelled post-techno hedonism (''Electrobank'), La Funk Mob-influenced trip-hop ('Pikup'), heady ambience ('Lost in the K-Hole') and riffs on the Beatles' 'Tomorrow Never Knows' ('Setting Sun' and the incredible 'My Private Psychedelic Reel'). CD two will delight fans, featuring as it does a quintet of previously unreleased tracks and alternate versions, with the opioid pulse of 'Cylinders' and the slamming 'It Doesn't Matter (alternate mix)' standing out.

Review: Celebrated Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo was still in the relatively early stages of his career when he recorded this live album for the Impulse! label in 1967. The sessions took place at The Jazz Workshop in Boston, when Szabo was joined by Jimmy Stewart on guitar, Lajos Kabok on bass, Marty Morell on drums and Hal Gordon on percussion. As Douglas Payne commented in a review of the celebrated album, "the interplay within the group is something to behold" and when you take in their versions of such classics as 'The Beat Goes On' and 'What Is This Thing Called Love?', you'd be hard pressed to disagree.

Review: After their first round was such a success, Gary Crowley and Jim Lahat have been tasked with pulling together another essential collection of punk and new wave from the 70s and 80s, and you can rest assured they've done it again. There are some major, familiar names here like The Clash, The Slits and Ramones, but there's also a hell of a lot of rare delights from the likes of The Limit, The Art Attacks and The Newtown Neurotics. Musically, there's plenty of range too from spiky three-chord pub rock and punk through to Linton Kewsi Johnson and Dennis Bovell's crossover dub as Poet & The Roots. That's just a tiny overview of this mammoth six-disc set, which takes you deep into the heart of a vital, thrilling period in alternative music.

Review: Heatwave's cult classic debut album Too Hot to Handle is a glorious ode to funk-disco sounds from the American outfit. It was recorded from 1975 to 1976 and arrived that same year in the UK, a year later in the Us, and remains a much-loved album all these decades later. The Dayton., Ohio-formed band features well over 10 different members in its time but this album was written exclusively by songwriter/keyboardist Rod Temperton who hooked up with the band when the founding member, Johnnie Wilder, had relocated to London, England after being in the services and based in West Germany.
