Review: Laugh Track is The National's most freewheeling, all-hands-on-deck album in years. If Frankenstein represented a rebuilding of trust between group members after 20+ years together, the vibrant, exploratory Laugh Track is both the product of that faith and a new statement of intent. Revelling in the license to radically upend its creative process, The National honed most of this material in live performances on tour this year and captured those invigorated versions in impromptu sessions at producer Tucker Martine's Portland studio, Flora Recording & Playback. The nearly eight-minute album closer 'Smoke Detector' was recorded in June during a Vancouver soundcheck, completing a body of work bristling with spontaneity and vintage rock energy that makes a perfect complement to the songs found on its more introspective predecessor.

Review: Ohio five-piece The National present their latest, most affecting statement to date, Laugh Track. The 12-song LP is a follow-up companion to, and features material originally started in, the same sessions as First Two Pages Of Frankenstein, also released by 4AD back in April. While the parent album was a brooding genesis of post-COVID anxiety channelled into indie rock, this child is a higher-res re-rendering of the same headspace, lending the National clarity in hindsight. Like its predecessor, it features from the same ilk of collaborators - Phoebe Bridgers, Rosanne Cash, Bon Iver - and is an infectiously pristine indie-pop-rocker, dedicated to "bailing out of your head".

Review: Musician, painter, sculptor and ceramist Henri Guedon was known affectionately as the grandfather of modern music from the French Antilles. His standout album angst more than a dozen was 1975's Karma. An OG copy is hard to find and pricey when you do, so thankfully Outre National Records have secured the rights to this limited edition and remastered reissue. It is an impossibly lively fusion of soul, funk and world, jazz-rock and reggae, Afro-Cuban rhythms and indigenous African sounds like beguine and gwo ka. Guedon's vocals ride over all the many bristling drum and instrumental tracks to make for a real carnival sound.

Review: English heavy-metal band Diamond Head was formed in Stourbridge by guitarist Brian Tatler and drummer Duncan Scott in 1976. Part of the new wave of British heavy metal, even the most famous bands in the category - Metallica, Megadeth, etc. - acknowledge Diamond Head as among the few pioneers to popularise the sound after a long nascence, not to mention their creditors. On Borrowed Time, one can hear that Diamond Head are still informed by ballad rock, highlighting the mid-heyday developments of the sound in the 1970s. Now reissued by Music On Vinyl, this edition is faithful to later versions, adding their signature song 'Am I Evil?' into the mix; the cherry on top to an already amazing, formative heavy metal album.

Review: Blur were always the posh, private school answer to the more streetwise cool of Oasis during the heyday of Brit pop during the mid to late 90s. Their second album Modern Life Is Rubbish got them back into the affections of the public after their debut album somewhat turned people off (with many thinking it was a cash in on the popular but fading Manchester sound) and saw the band fall behind the likes of Suede. Part of the raisin for the return to success was the sonic makeover which brought more tradition guitar-pop sounds back with lush melodies and poignant humour in the lyrics from lead singer Damon Albarn. On its 30th anniversary the album now gets a full reissue as part of National Album Day 2023

It's one in a series of compilations that have been put together to appeal to vinyl lovers and features two sides packed with tunes hand-picked with TLC from Ace and compiled by Dean Rudland, who has also penned the liner notes that one with it. Review: With each album, Daft Punk threw down something new for their mammoth fanbase to deal with. Never ones to repeat themselves or play it safe, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo ruffled feathers when they followed up the pop-tastic heights of Discovery with the rock-tinted stylings of Human After All. It plays out like a rollercoaster from the Soul Train days to the modern Top 40 with plenty of epic covers of all the greats like 'Ain't No Sunshine', 'What's Goin' On' and 'Never Can Say Goodbye.' The record was his eighth for Atlantic and the eighth produced by Joel Dorn ad is the one with the most soul. Review: A posthumous Lee 'Scratch' Perry box set is here, designed to co-incide with the anniversary of the dub pioneer's passing, courtesy of the star's main advocates Trojan Records. Including a digital version, a CD and a 4xLP version, it also comes with a 50-page fully illustrated book written by Perry's official biographer David Katz. It contains rare and unreleased mixes and tunes alongside some of his best known work, with Junior Murvin's reggae staple 'Police And Thieves' and the Upsetters' boss reggae classic 'Return Of Django' numbering among the 109 tracks included .

Review: Early 90s eccentrics Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine were a crucial force in establishing of a certain brand of chart-bound power pop informed by post-punk; fusing scratched-up, sample-heavy beat progressions with histrionic ballads dealing with every topic from queer identity to late Thatcher-era alienation. By then a Rough Trade fixture, 1992: The Love Album was then their grandest project to date, though this one saw them break from the Cartel to join the majors with Chrysalis. It's now re-issued as a four-side behemoth producing parodic London-centric highlights like 'The Only Living Boy In New Cross', substituting Simon & Garfunkel's American big smoke for historic, humble ole' Hatcham.

Review: It's now 25 years since Echo and the Bunnymen reformed (the Liverpool-born band initially disbanded in 1993) and recorded 'Evergreen', their seventh studio album. While reviews were mixed at the time, there's no doubt that it's as jangly, timeless-sounding and sonically gorgeous as any of their more acclaimed albums of the '80s and early '90s. Given that it was released at the height of 'Britpop' (Liam Gallagher provided backing vocals on 'Nothing Lasts Forever', a by-product of Oasis recording in the studio next-door), it's sound is far baggier, looser and warmer than much of the music being made by their younger rivals. On this expanded anniversary edition, the original (if remastered) set is joined by a disc of live recordings, both from their own shows and promotional radio sessions, all of which were laid to tape between 1997 and '99.

Containing a godlike 100 or so tracks on it, it includes lost rarities like 'Psychedelic Hypnotist Daydream (Demo)' and 'The Deterioration Of The Fight Or Flight Response" (B-side Fight Test UK CD 1)' and Flaming Lips fans surely have their work cut out for them. A must for all obsessive collectors of the UK psychers' work, hoping to salvage their most obscure sonic trips - the ones that never came back.

Review: For many to whom the inaugural question, "where were you in '92?", is posed, the answer will simply be: in Love. Or at least, captivated and entranced by the Love Album, the seminal third LP by alt-dance post-punk masters Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine. An authentically London band, the indie rockers / synth poppers came up in the miasmic heyday of charity gigs and demo tapes, and blew newfound fans away with their live ambition, which became known for their walls of white stage lights, which psychically implanted the suggestive seed: gyrate or else. This album is ludicrously varied, centring on the impassioned Dylan-esque vocals of Jim Bob fused together with huge synth bass arpeggiations, rhythm guitars courtesy of Fruit Bat and emotive lyrical interludes, centring on themes of knightlike chivalry, beautiful London souls, and dreams frittered away in the crowd of youth.

Review: The very next year after the original Oi! The Album compilation was released in 1980 saw the second instalment Strength Thru Oi! dropped onto the heads of the masses, and more than four decades on, it looks like folk might need another reminder. A topic of controversy upon initial release due to the use of an image of Nicky Crane, a British Movement activist who was serving a four-year sentence for racist violence at the time, on the cover art, original pressings are like gold dust these days as the release was withdrawn from publication by Decca Records. Now that the smoke has cleared, we can all wet shave our scalps, lace up our steel-toes, grab our dirtiest combat jacket and punch the ever loving shit out of the air to anthems from the seminal likes of The 4 Skins, Cock Sparrer, The Toy Dolls and The Last Resort (to name but a small handful), with little in the ways of reprimand.
