Calender - "Comin' On Strong"
Chuck Higgins & The Wild Bunch - "Funkyfield"
Review: Few can match BBE when it comes to the funk and disco compilation stakes - the label's been issuing killer compendiums curated by some of the finest and most eminently knowledgeable DJs and diggers since the mid 90s. Soul In The Hole sees them hand the controls to Sadar Bahar, Chicago based DJ described by BBE as the city's "best kept secret". Bahar began DJing in the early 80s, a historically important time for music in Chicago and states he was driven by an "unquenchable desire to create one of the best collections ever". This 12 track compilation demonstrates Bahar has achieved that with aplomb, traversing through a colourful range of funk, soul, disco and boogie, with Frederic Mercier's "Spirit" a real gem.

Rainbow Perch (Emile Strunz remix)
Review: US label Wonder Stories follow up strong turns from Macaulay, Joe Morris and Jac The Disco with this hemisphere-spanning collaboration between Aussie producer Dawn Again and UK stalwart Rothmans. The mood on the record is squarely aimed at psychedelic strains of house music for adventurous, smooth grooving souls, whether it's the originals or the remixes you came for. "Timeless Odyssey" matches fuzzy bass with swirling pads and peppy rhythms, which Timothy J Fairplay dutifully jacks up with a wavey sensibility and plenty of dancefloor heft. "Rainbow Perch" is a synth-rich party ballad loaded with heart to match its infectious grooves. Emile Strunz delivers a remix that builds on the original's yearning qualities with a journeying spirit that would make for some great outdoors listening / partying.

Review: Given the soul-soaked and generally far-sighted nature of techno veteran Fabrice Lig's music, it's unsurprising to see him popping up on Carl Craig's esteemed Planet E label. Galactic Soul Odyssey more than lives up to its' title, too, largely eschewing dancefloor techno rhythms in favour of tracks that bristle with the positivity of P-funk, boogie, broken beat and high class synth-pop (think rubbery slap bass, kaleidoscopic synths, '80s soul vocals and bouncy rhythms). It's a deliciously positive set, all told, with just the right balance between studied retro-futurism and effortlessly melodious atmosphere. Certainly, it's something of a triumph - an accessible romp with enough musical depth to please even the choosiest of heads.

Two Far Gone (Carlos Hernandez Natural mix)
Review: With releases from Mudd, Kaos, Prins Thomas and Thomas & Eric (aka Rub'n'Tug) Rong Music are at the forefront of the nu-disco revival, and here they strike again. Woolfey serves up a healthy slice of summer Balearicism with these two songs off the LP, "Odyssey" and "1987". Odyssey's robust bassline and probing keys sound a bit like an updated Blockheads song, while 1987's electro pop tinge falls somewhere in between an early Royksopp number and a Maurice Fulton remix. Over on the b-side we have a very special remix of "Two Far Gone" by one of NYC's best kept secret's, Carlos Hernandez.

Review: If you call a compilation Ultimate Soul, it better deliver on that lofty promise. To be fair to the creators of this four-disc set, they've done a very good job in gathering together 68 tracks from the golden age of soul (think mid 1960s to the mid 1980s). Along the way, you'll find songs from almost every soul legend going - think Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Dione Warwick, Alexander O'Neal, Luther Vandross, Bill Withers and Shuggie Otis, for starters - as well as nods to key developments in the soul music story (the Motown sound, disco, boogie, electrofunk, '80s soul, and so on). Naturally, the majority of the selected tracks tend towards the well known, but there are a few curveballs, album tracks and alternative selections included to keep things interesting.

Review: Nobody could accuse Joris Voorn of lazily knocking out a big standard DJ mix on his first contribution to Fabric's long-running series. The long-established Dutch producer has used the opportunity to showcase his studio skills, combining elements from no less than 65 different tracks to create a unique musical journey that brilliantly blurs the boundaries between a DJ mix, album, and remix set. Musically, it's pretty much what you'd expect - deeper, woozier cuts morphing into tougher, harder fare as the set progresses - but it flows wonderfully well. Due to the nature of its' construction, even familiar tracks from the likes of Robert Hood, Plastikman, Deepchord and Voorn himself become vibrant new pieces, as he brilliantly melds them with up to four other cuts at the same time. It works as a mix, but as a showcase for Ableton Live's potential it's out of this world.

I'm Not Nintendo (Nutaike Magnavox Odyssey)
Review: Birmingham duo Free School cut an impressive swathe with Ranting & Raving, their debut release for the Tirk imprint last year, which successfully introduced them as shoegazing cosmiche wizards who dabbled in prog disco. Returning to the London imprint with the excellently named Unravelling after the Lottery EP, Free School have further developed that sound, with the title track an astounding slab of synthesizer heavy groove material filled with delicious reverb, motorik analogue tones and big slabs of percussion. Mark E steps up with his first remix offering of the year, transforming the track into a fizzing deep bumper that retains core elements yet still is indelibly stamped with the Merc boss's slow building touch. Flipside Free School excel even further with the calm of the opening bars to "I'm Not Nintendo" betraying the sudden explosion of analogue colour and ever swerving rhythmic texture that makes the track shine.

Review: Honey laced future retro boogie antics from The Rhythm Odyssey aka Chicken Lipper Dean Meredith - presenting the second off-cut from his meaty LP Metaphysical Transition. "Right On Up (For Love)" is presented here in elongated 12" mix format and brings the best out of Charmaine Baines soulful tones which rides the dubbed out main section rhythm with aplomb. The accompanying Main Stem version strips things down to a pleasant Balearic bump, waiting an age to drop the vocal, whilst the Emperor Machine cuts down the tempo and fully flexes his inner Moroder with a glorious arpeggio heavy chug of a remix. To round things off nicely there is an additional Rhythm Odyssey Warehouse relick of "Amsterdam Boots" to try on for size.

Native New Yorker (Ashleys Beedle Big Apple Uptown Story part 1 & 2)
Inside Out (DJ Friction extended disco mix)
Inside Out (PBR Streetgang remix)
Review: For the uninitiated, Odyssey are a band who thrived in the 1970s disco boom thanks to an insouciant blend of live funk, soul and Afro Caribbean rhythms. Recently Yam Who's ISM imprint embarked on the Legacy project, which will see the band get back together in the studio to record a new album that includes updated versions of past hits alongside new material. In addition to this, ISM have commissioned a number of remixes, with expertly selected knob twiddlers turning reimagining Odyssey material for contemporary dancefloors. On the first edition, "Native New Yorker" - the first true Odyssey smash hit - is given a thorough disco treatment from Ashley Beedle with his "Big Apple Uptown Story" rife with piano keys, funky guitars and soaring string sections. On the flip, two upbeat and feel good remixes of "Inside Out" from DJ Friction and PBR are both pure disco euphoria. Bells chime, vocals bounce and the irresistibly groovy bass keeps them well and truly alive.

All That You Do (The Rhythm Odyssey mixture)
Review: Andy Meecham and Dean Meredith's Chicken Lips project seems to be one of the most enduring production partnerships in recent times. The classic bassline of their seminal "He Not In" was recently the subject of major label excavation by Defected, whilst the duo's talent for new original material has found itself a home on Southern Fried. Having debuted on the South Coast operation last year with the appropriately titled D.R.O.M.P. 12", Chicken Lips make a worthy return here on All That You Do which comes backed with some stellar remixes. The original finds Chicken Lips in full out disco form, bouncing all manner of analogue tweaks and a soaring vocal from Charmaine Baines off the rubbery groove. Both Meecham and Meredith also contribute remixes under their respective Emperor Machine and The Rhythm Oddysey aliases and its hard to choose a winner between their remixes and the accompanying effort from Joe Goddard.

Move Groove (Warehouse mix)
Move Groove (Dr Dunks remix)
Move Groove (Vermin's Blackout remix)
Review: Chicken Lips main man Dean Meredith presents the first fruits of his new Rhythm Odyssey project and if you like bottom heavy throwback flexors that sound like they're lifted straight from a late eighties warehouse party in Chicago, then you want to be checking this. Meredith's own Warehouse Mix of "Move Groove" hogs the A Side, gradually teasing out an energetic piano melody that hugs the heavy analogue bass tightly, whilst a thumping jack groove aided by subtle flecks of cowbell and drum machine fills provides the requisite sweat inducing thrust. This is backed with a remix from Dr Dunks that slows the pace, ramps up the bass frequency and adds a delightfully reverberant beat to proceedings for a hypnotically narcotic version which reacquaints the piano melody with the depths of the mix before being thrust into your attention on a brilliant drop. Newcomer Vermin opts for a Model 500 meets Vibert perma retro electro reimagination that goes overboard on the 808 kicks and acid squiggles.

Review: Waze & Odyssey are dealing in a lean kind of old-skool flavoured house music which has made its way onto Southern Fried and Wolf Music in 2012. Launching their own imprint to put out their cool and deadly deep house, "Love That (Burns Hot Enough)" kicks things off with a straight-up pumper full of DX7 bassline vibes and light and summery piano chords. It's a simple trick finished off with a snappy diva vocal hook. "Ma Body" is a marginally moodier affair, focusing more on the rhythm section and keeping excessive elements held back until a Casio keyboard line comes in, shredding everything down to pure bliss.

It does a good job at that, even if some of the selections tend towards the lesser-known end of the commercial disco spectrum, with all three discs showcasing such disco must-haves and part-starting sing-alongs as Dan Hartman's soaring 'Relight My Fire' (famously covered by Take That in the 90s), Diana Ross's 'I'm Coming Out', Chaka Khan's inspired 'Young Hearts Run Free', Grace Jones' punk-funk Roxy Music cover 'Love Is The Drug', McFadden & Whitehead's epic 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now' and Cheryl Lynn's peerless 'Got To Be Real'.

Review: On his first album for Hospital Records - and third solo set in total - Rouen Wilkins AKA Voltage has created a more widescreen musical vision than anything he's previously releases. Balance Over Symmetry begins with a sparkling, synth-heavy tribute to mid-80s NYC freestyle ('So Close'), and ends with a weighty, dubstep style collaboration with Demolition Man ('The Life of a DJ (Rockers Mix)'); in between, the fast-rising producer breathlessly rushes between typically heavy and ear-catching, club-focussed drum & bass jams, revivalist ragga-jungle workouts (Sweet Irie hook-up 'Natty Love'), stunningly atmospheric ambient interludes (see the spacey 'Consciousness'), immersive experimental D&B ('Moonshine'), and up-beat synth-wave goodness ('Endless Dreaming', with Belgian Goddess). Review: Rough House Rosie is back with another selection of sublime tones in the adventurous corner of the deep house playground. The Silent Movie Sounds series never fails to present a fascinating array of producers, and so it is on the fourth volume as Nemanja Krstic seduces with the melodic delights of "Bass Odyssey" and Lady Blaktronika heads into blissed-out territory with the spiritual wonder of "Ringo Oiwaka Heaven". Miruga's "White Moon" is a mysterious, dubbed out affair and Seal Bient heads even further out with the scuffed and muffled flutter of "Slavery". As ever, the vitality of the tracks on this 12" can't be ignored for open-minded diggers looking for original, contemporary deep house.

Review: Isaac Prieto is Mexico-born but Detroit based and that is presumably where he hooked up with the Motor City's assured house auteur Javonntte. The pair take a trip through scuffed-up deep house brilliance here with the chattery claps and blurting bass of spaced-out opener 'One Take' before 'Brothers In Rhythm' is a more dance-y cut with pinging kicks and detuned synths stumbling about the mix to make for a brilliant sense of mechanical funk. 'High Energy' brings edgy chord stabs over busted beats and bass and 'Lost & Found' is more kinetic analogue madness with hurried techno hi-hats, spangled pads and punchy kicks all bringing an utterly fresh type of sound.

Review: Spacemachine is the new imprint from Johnny 'Chingas' Hiller (Lasermagnetic/Tropical Spacemachine) and Pete Herbert (Maxi Discs/Reverso 68/LSB), an audio showcase for their London-based Spacemachine nights and JC's fortnightly radio show, The Tropical Spacemachine. This first outing, 'Odyssey' features reworks from the duo of two classics from the vaults. The a-side kicks things off in true carnival party style, beefing things up and spacing out a well known classic from one of the UK's best known disco outfits; whilst the flip side heads straight for some deeper, heavy, afro-voodoo disco business. Both tracks are aimed straight at the dancefloor and have already been going down a treat over the summer months. Early DJ support from The Glimmers, Greg Wilson, Rub N Tug, Horse Meat Disco, The Revenge & Todd Terje.

Review: Waze & Odyssey appear to be on a quest to rack up record number of label appearances in 2013 (keep up Ejeca!) and their latest release sees the pair descending on New York once more to helm the debut release on the LPH WHITE series. A further expansion of Jacques Renault and Nik Mercer's Lets Play House operation, LPH WHITE sees the label take it's "cue from those mysterious, classic, unmarked dance records of years past." Unsurprisingly, Waze & Odyssey are in upfront mood on both original cuts here, though lead cur "Feelin' You" demonstrates a new found percussive subtlety in amdist all the chopped vocals and dancefloor shredding chord stabs. A hint at the label's future is offered by a remix from London-by-way-of-Southern California up-and-comer Urulu who will be gracing the second WHITE EP with four original productions.

Review: After brushing the dust off their fingers accrued from compiling that excellent Magik Sunrise compilation for Leng, Psychemagik return to their Discotheque Wreckers series for the final 12" installment. Lead track "Balearic Girl" allegedly originates from a super rare Swedish hairspray advert, with the summery vocal hook and heavy bassline augmented by Psychemagik's subtle mastery of dancefloor tweaks. On the flip, "Spiced Oddity" finds the pair in cosmic chug territory and is a sublime way to round out the series, though we hear whispers that a Disco Wreckers CD compiling the series along with two bonus cuts will arrive later this summer.

Love Attack (Mark E remix)
Review: Waze & Odyssey step up for Disco Bloodbath's fourth release with an EP that harbours all that is required for a club hit. "Love Attack" shares in the house-simplicity that made Brawther's MLIU imprint a la mode; sustained and sidechained strings, groovy bassline, phone filtered vocals, sampled party atmospherics and power chords. "She's A Hooker" pitches a dub-steppy melody on top of a beefy Mike Dehnert sounding bass-kick combo and Fachwerkian dub stabs, which are later blessed by "yep-yep" vocal snaps and glutinous house hooks. The Mark E edit of "Love Attack" disco downs the original for a slightly slower Balearic burner.

Review: When it comes to excitable club fodder rooted in club sounds of the late 80s and 90s, the Tone Dropout crew consistently delivers the goods. They're at it again on their 11th multi-artist extravaganza, which giddily sprints between acid-fired breakbeat house with glassy-eyed melodic motifs and spacey bleeps (Sween and Alphonse hook-up 'Downfall'), trancey early progressive house revivalism ('Odyssey T3D' by XOTR), intergalactic electro-bleep fusion (the punchy, Kraftwerk-on-pills excellence of Samuel Padden's 'Teslas Still Alive') and classy bleep and breaks nostalgia (Kostas G's pleasingly sub-heavy, funk break-driven 'Spectrum').

Review: Another big remix package from ISM, who continue their homage paying endeavours for legendary NYC disco troupe Odyssey. This latest 12" sees remixes from Faze Action, Toby Tobias, Leftside Wobble and Ron Basejam. Opening proceedings on the A-Side you'll find Faze Action's thumping proto-house version of "Going Back To My Roots" - this one is made for sweat-drenched Sunday nights at Horse Meat Disco! Mr Tobias goes deep on his version of "O DJ KO", with the swampy bass, echo laden vocal cuts and bleep-fuelled melody a pleasing contrast to its raucous predecessor. The two remixes on the flip maintain these lofty standards, with Soundcloud don Leftside Wobble turning in a twinkling refix of "Lonely Star", while Crazy P man Ron Basejam turns "Ain't No Dubbin' Us Now" into a beefy, conga-led traipse through shimmering, Balearic soundscapes.

Sellouts - "Envy"
Review: The Sccucci Manucci label has done a fine job of handpicking artists on the rise for their releases to date, collaring the likes of Casino Times, Francis Inferno Orchestra and Toomydisco as well as the odd established name like Jacques Renault. The label's fourth release Forza Quattro is still grounded in the disco/house sensibility that has served them so well, though the presence of Waze & Oddysey demonstrates the Sccucci A & R team are willing to deviate. The elusive US pair are in the midst of a hot patch right now with releases already burning on Body Work and Southern Fried and plenty more due over the coming months, so their presence here is a real coup. "I Can't Hear You" sounds vaguely like a extra bouncy cover of the classic "RIP Groove" and definitely ranks alongside their output to date. Alongside this the white vinyl EP has tempo traversing contributions from Fil Lavin, Sellouts and Deadly Sins, with the latter's slow and chuggy "Don't You Know" a particular highlight.

Review: Glance at the ocean deep discography of former Chicken Lipper Dean Meredith and it's easier to count out the labels he hasn't been involved with in one shape or another over the years. Delete from that list Matt Edwards Rekids imprint, with this debut EP under The Rhythm Odyssey following Meredith's recent tweak of Nina Kraviz for the label. Despite the odd sensation of Rekids and The Rhythm Odyssey conjoined in 12" harmony, the Celestial Vibrations EP is a typically flawless interpretation of no nonsense, analogue warehouse music that Meredith has done so well of late. The tripped out, pitch bent "Raw Nerve (Dub)" is the favourite in the Juno office!

That Ain't Right (Waze & Odyssey Friend Of A Friend remix)
That Ain't Right (Legendary Children Friend Of Mine remix)
Review: Famed East London basement dwellers Disco Bloodbath are no strangers to the art of production, having cut their teeth on all manner of high profile remix commissions in recent times. This clearly laid the foundations for the collective's remaining members Ben Pistor and Damon Martin to branch out and establish a record label. The latter is on the buttons for the debut release "That Ain't Right", a decidedly moody slice of 90s US vocal house that brings to mind Murk at their murkiest. What the Bicep boys might call a "right pumper" is complemented by two well chosen remixes with the recently de-masked Waze & Odyssey subjecting the vocal to actual body harm over a groove that finds more space for the thick bass line. It's left to the Legendary Children - a set of DJs and fledgling producers responsible for a club night every bit as good as Bloodbath in its pomp - to embellish the track with just the right dash of acid for a more throbbing variation.

Review: "Aus" marked one of the deeper moments from Nina Kraviz's self titled debut album, released earlier this year to general applause, and it makes a smart choice for single release as the restrained emotion of those rippling Rhodes touches and organs means the track is ripe for reinterpretation. Kudos to label and artist for the chosen remixers on this twelve inch; with The Rhythm Oddysey, DJ QU and Matthew (Radioslave) E all taking the King Aus featuring icy funker in different directions. You should know what to expect from a remix by Dean Meredith under The Rhythm Oddysey moniker but the Warehouse Tape edit is named for those that don't, with the spirit of Ron Hardy at play here on a stripped back, hissing groove that's embellished with typical acid squiggles and an excellent final twist into funk. Edwards turns in a typically rolling techy version graced with some subtle analogue abstractions while Strength Music type DJ QU provides the most mind-bending remix with a richly constructed production far removed from Kraviz's original.

Review: Making all the right moves with previous form on Aus, Needwant and Tusk Wax, Ejeca is well tapped into the revivalist house zeitgeist with these hale and hearty jams for Waze & Odyssey. Solid Inner City chords and crisp, bright drums abound on side A, with "Night Rays" sure to inflict some damage with its fulsome square wave bassline. On the flipside, "Never Forget" ups the tempo for a cut that dresses like tech house but moves like 2-step. Waze & Odyssey themselves bring a smoother, deeper vibe to bear on their remix of "Riddim", pulling the melodic content right back to subtle flecks for a greater dramatic impact.

Review: Bringing one of those vocals that will be nagging in the noggin long after the lights have come up; Ali Love and Kali are in prime pop-picking mode with this new single on Crosstown Rebels. The structure of the track is still in keeping with the label's slick take on house music; while the vocals intone a message of massaged ego that translates smoothly to Waze & Odyssey's more brooding remix. Maceo Plex comes in with a more romantic vision for the track, laying out thick reams of synth in a seductive late night style that can bleed outwards to fill a space large or small.

Review: Whilst it's not advisable to make any brash predictions about the genre delving of Claremont 56 and Leng given the brilliant variety of their output, this latest twelve on the latter label is perhaps a deviation towards the more rhythmic end of the electronic spectrum. And who better to provide it than Dean Meredith, whose standing in UK house predates both of the last two old school revivals. You may have enjoyed his recent Rhythm Odyssey excursions on Lip Service, and Love Potion presents more of the same electronic dub house filled with raw analogue business. The title track sets the scene with punchy kick drums and gloopy acid basslines the foundation for some energetic stabs and tear jerking chord washes. Complementing this is Drum Potion, a DJ tool which allows Meredith to demonstrate his panache at crafting cascading drum rhythms, something which is explored with equal aplomb on the B Side bump of "See In The Light".

Review: The Mind Fair trio of Chicken Lipper Dean Meredith, Ben Shenton and Alex Bradbury continue their Balearic adventures apace on the Rogue Cat Sounds label with the superb "Sundown Drive". Close your eyes and think of DJ Alfredo manning the decks at Amnesia just before Fung, Oakey and Rampling stumbled upon him and coined the genre and you'd have the sort of flamenco led groove that gently propels the opening moments "Sundown Drive" permeating from the speakers. Given the current state of the White Isle, this is probably more suited for the calmer Summer moments on the Punta Del Este. There are calmer moments right? Meredith goes solo and dons his Rhythm Odyssey alias for a superb remix that ratchets up the dirty factor exponentially without losing that sublime piano motif.

Their irrepressible formula for classicist referencing house music is very much on display with lead track "Hold Up (Yeah You)" deftly matching emotive pads with a bumping groove and one of those simple yet oh so very effective vocal hooks. Another potential W&O hit in the making. Three years on comes Cosmic Machine: The Sequel, a similarly impressive set that includes material from the early-to-mid '80s as well as the 1970s. It's naturally stylistically varied, touching on eccentric disco, kosmiche, French-made Italo-disco, soundtrack-style synthesizer instrumentals, pitched-down creepiness, and triumphant cheeriness (see "Grand Prix" by Grand Prix). While there are a few familiar names dotted throughout the track list, for the most part the label has laudably chosen to champion the unfamiliar. As a result, it should be a near essential purchase for anyone interested in the development of European electronic music.

Review: With the sublime summer hit "Hoop Dreams" still ringing in our ears, Blacksmif returns for his second outing on the BlahBlahBlah label. Opting not to tinker with the lush post-garage formula that made his debut such a winner, he presents a similarly urgent take on melodic bass music with "How The Fly Saved The River", as rolling yet distant UKF inspired snares tumble over a collage of fractured vocals and hazy stabs, while "Kangs Odyssey" takes a slightly more laid back approach with its jazzy arrangement that recalls a slightly more focused James Blake. Remix duties for the title track fall to Dummy Records and left_blank artist Lorca, who transform it into a piece of dubbed out yet melodic house music which should go down a storm on the dancefloor, making the insistent bass stand out even more against its spacious backdrop. Fans of Jacques Greene should check this!

Citizen is on typical form here, with both the title track and "Stronger With You" characterised by doleful vocal treatments, crisp drumming and pensive, soul infused melodic touches. Waze & Odyssey elect to rework the latter track, perhaps due to the more interesting vocal sample and offer a more jacking rendition that comes replete with a fidgeting undercurrent.
