Review: Few can match BBE when it comes to the funk and disco compilation stakes - the label's been issuing killer compendiums curated by some of the finest and most eminently knowledgeable DJs and diggers since the mid 90s. Soul In The Hole sees them hand the controls to Sadar Bahar, Chicago based DJ described by BBE as the city's "best kept secret". Bahar began DJing in the early 80s, a historically important time for music in Chicago and states he was driven by an "unquenchable desire to create one of the best collections ever". This 12 track compilation demonstrates Bahar has achieved that with aplomb, traversing through a colourful range of funk, soul, disco and boogie, with Frederic Mercier's "Spirit" a real gem.

Two Far Gone (Carlos Hernandez Natural mix)
Review: With releases from Mudd, Kaos, Prins Thomas and Thomas & Eric (aka Rub'n'Tug) Rong Music are at the forefront of the nu-disco revival, and here they strike again. Woolfey serves up a healthy slice of summer Balearicism with these two songs off the LP, "Odyssey" and "1987". Odyssey's robust bassline and probing keys sound a bit like an updated Blockheads song, while 1987's electro pop tinge falls somewhere in between an early Royksopp number and a Maurice Fulton remix. Over on the b-side we have a very special remix of "Two Far Gone" by one of NYC's best kept secret's, Carlos Hernandez.

All That You Do (Emperor Machine Special extended version)
All That You Do (Joe Goddard remix)
All That You Do (The Rhythm Odyssey mixture)
Review: Andy Meecham and Dean Meredith's Chicken Lips project seems to be one of the most enduring production partnerships in recent times. The classic bassline of their seminal "He Not In" was recently the subject of major label excavation by Defected, whilst the duo's talent for new original material has found itself a home on Southern Fried. Having debuted on the South Coast operation last year with the appropriately titled D.R.O.M.P. 12", Chicken Lips make a worthy return here on All That You Do which comes backed with some stellar remixes. The original finds Chicken Lips in full out disco form, bouncing all manner of analogue tweaks and a soaring vocal from Charmaine Baines off the rubbery groove. Both Meecham and Meredith also contribute remixes under their respective Emperor Machine and The Rhythm Oddysey aliases and its hard to choose a winner between their remixes and the accompanying effort from Joe Goddard.

Ma Body
Review: Waze & Odyssey are dealing in a lean kind of old-skool flavoured house music which has made its way onto Southern Fried and Wolf Music in 2012. Launching their own imprint to put out their cool and deadly deep house, "Love That (Burns Hot Enough)" kicks things off with a straight-up pumper full of DX7 bassline vibes and light and summery piano chords. It's a simple trick finished off with a snappy diva vocal hook. "Ma Body" is a marginally moodier affair, focusing more on the rhythm section and keeping excessive elements held back until a Casio keyboard line comes in, shredding everything down to pure bliss.

Review: Honey laced future retro boogie antics from The Rhythm Odyssey aka Chicken Lipper Dean Meredith - presenting the second off-cut from his meaty LP Metaphysical Transition. "Right On Up (For Love)" is presented here in elongated 12" mix format and brings the best out of Charmaine Baines soulful tones which rides the dubbed out main section rhythm with aplomb. The accompanying Main Stem version strips things down to a pleasant Balearic bump, waiting an age to drop the vocal, whilst the Emperor Machine cuts down the tempo and fully flexes his inner Moroder with a glorious arpeggio heavy chug of a remix. To round things off nicely there is an additional Rhythm Odyssey Warehouse relick of "Amsterdam Boots" to try on for size.

Move Groove (Vermin's Blackout remix)
Review: Chicken Lips main man Dean Meredith presents the first fruits of his new Rhythm Odyssey project and if you like bottom heavy throwback flexors that sound like they're lifted straight from a late eighties warehouse party in Chicago, then you want to be checking this. Meredith's own Warehouse Mix of "Move Groove" hogs the A Side, gradually teasing out an energetic piano melody that hugs the heavy analogue bass tightly, whilst a thumping jack groove aided by subtle flecks of cowbell and drum machine fills provides the requisite sweat inducing thrust. This is backed with a remix from Dr Dunks that slows the pace, ramps up the bass frequency and adds a delightfully reverberant beat to proceedings for a hypnotically narcotic version which reacquaints the piano melody with the depths of the mix before being thrust into your attention on a brilliant drop. Newcomer Vermin opts for a Model 500 meets Vibert perma retro electro reimagination that goes overboard on the 808 kicks and acid squiggles.

It does a good job at that, even if some of the selections tend towards the lesser-known end of the commercial disco spectrum, with all three discs showcasing such disco must-haves and part-starting sing-alongs as Dan Hartman's soaring 'Relight My Fire' (famously covered by Take That in the 90s), Diana Ross's 'I'm Coming Out', Chaka Khan's inspired 'Young Hearts Run Free', Grace Jones' punk-funk Roxy Music cover 'Love Is The Drug', McFadden & Whitehead's epic 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now' and Cheryl Lynn's peerless 'Got To Be Real'.

Review: Spacemachine is the new imprint from Johnny 'Chingas' Hiller (Lasermagnetic/Tropical Spacemachine) and Pete Herbert (Maxi Discs/Reverso 68/LSB), an audio showcase for their London-based Spacemachine nights and JC's fortnightly radio show, The Tropical Spacemachine. This first outing, 'Odyssey' features reworks from the duo of two classics from the vaults. The a-side kicks things off in true carnival party style, beefing things up and spacing out a well known classic from one of the UK's best known disco outfits; whilst the flip side heads straight for some deeper, heavy, afro-voodoo disco business. Both tracks are aimed straight at the dancefloor and have already been going down a treat over the summer months. Early DJ support from The Glimmers, Greg Wilson, Rub N Tug, Horse Meat Disco, The Revenge & Todd Terje.

Love Attack (Mark E remix)
Review: Waze & Odyssey step up for Disco Bloodbath's fourth release with an EP that harbours all that is required for a club hit. "Love Attack" shares in the house-simplicity that made Brawther's MLIU imprint a la mode; sustained and sidechained strings, groovy bassline, phone filtered vocals, sampled party atmospherics and power chords. "She's A Hooker" pitches a dub-steppy melody on top of a beefy Mike Dehnert sounding bass-kick combo and Fachwerkian dub stabs, which are later blessed by "yep-yep" vocal snaps and glutinous house hooks. The Mark E edit of "Love Attack" disco downs the original for a slightly slower Balearic burner.

Review: Bringing one of those vocals that will be nagging in the noggin long after the lights have come up; Ali Love and Kali are in prime pop-picking mode with this new single on Crosstown Rebels. The structure of the track is still in keeping with the label's slick take on house music; while the vocals intone a message of massaged ego that translates smoothly to Waze & Odyssey's more brooding remix. Maceo Plex comes in with a more romantic vision for the track, laying out thick reams of synth in a seductive late night style that can bleed outwards to fill a space large or small.

Review: Glance at the ocean deep discography of former Chicken Lipper Dean Meredith and it's easier to count out the labels he hasn't been involved with in one shape or another over the years. Delete from that list Matt Edwards Rekids imprint, with this debut EP under The Rhythm Odyssey following Meredith's recent tweak of Nina Kraviz for the label. Despite the odd sensation of Rekids and The Rhythm Odyssey conjoined in 12" harmony, the Celestial Vibrations EP is a typically flawless interpretation of no nonsense, analogue warehouse music that Meredith has done so well of late. The tripped out, pitch bent "Raw Nerve (Dub)" is the favourite in the Juno office!

That Ain't Right (Waze & Odyssey Friend Of A Friend remix)
That Ain't Right (Legendary Children Friend Of Mine remix)
Review: Famed East London basement dwellers Disco Bloodbath are no strangers to the art of production, having cut their teeth on all manner of high profile remix commissions in recent times. This clearly laid the foundations for the collective's remaining members Ben Pistor and Damon Martin to branch out and establish a record label. The latter is on the buttons for the debut release "That Ain't Right", a decidedly moody slice of 90s US vocal house that brings to mind Murk at their murkiest. What the Bicep boys might call a "right pumper" is complemented by two well chosen remixes with the recently de-masked Waze & Odyssey subjecting the vocal to actual body harm over a groove that finds more space for the thick bass line. It's left to the Legendary Children - a set of DJs and fledgling producers responsible for a club night every bit as good as Bloodbath in its pomp - to embellish the track with just the right dash of acid for a more throbbing variation.

Review: "Aus" marked one of the deeper moments from Nina Kraviz's self titled debut album, released earlier this year to general applause, and it makes a smart choice for single release as the restrained emotion of those rippling Rhodes touches and organs means the track is ripe for reinterpretation. Kudos to label and artist for the chosen remixers on this twelve inch; with The Rhythm Oddysey, DJ QU and Matthew (Radioslave) E all taking the King Aus featuring icy funker in different directions. You should know what to expect from a remix by Dean Meredith under The Rhythm Oddysey moniker but the Warehouse Tape edit is named for those that don't, with the spirit of Ron Hardy at play here on a stripped back, hissing groove that's embellished with typical acid squiggles and an excellent final twist into funk. Edwards turns in a typically rolling techy version graced with some subtle analogue abstractions while Strength Music type DJ QU provides the most mind-bending remix with a richly constructed production far removed from Kraviz's original.

Sundown Drive (The Rhythm Odyssey mix)
Review: The Mind Fair trio of Chicken Lipper Dean Meredith, Ben Shenton and Alex Bradbury continue their Balearic adventures apace on the Rogue Cat Sounds label with the superb "Sundown Drive". Close your eyes and think of DJ Alfredo manning the decks at Amnesia just before Fung, Oakey and Rampling stumbled upon him and coined the genre and you'd have the sort of flamenco led groove that gently propels the opening moments "Sundown Drive" permeating from the speakers. Given the current state of the White Isle, this is probably more suited for the calmer Summer moments on the Punta Del Este. There are calmer moments right? Meredith goes solo and dons his Rhythm Odyssey alias for a superb remix that ratchets up the dirty factor exponentially without losing that sublime piano motif.

Review: Whilst it's not advisable to make any brash predictions about the genre delving of Claremont 56 and Leng given the brilliant variety of their output, this latest twelve on the latter label is perhaps a deviation towards the more rhythmic end of the electronic spectrum. And who better to provide it than Dean Meredith, whose standing in UK house predates both of the last two old school revivals. You may have enjoyed his recent Rhythm Odyssey excursions on Lip Service, and Love Potion presents more of the same electronic dub house filled with raw analogue business. The title track sets the scene with punchy kick drums and gloopy acid basslines the foundation for some energetic stabs and tear jerking chord washes. Complementing this is Drum Potion, a DJ tool which allows Meredith to demonstrate his panache at crafting cascading drum rhythms, something which is explored with equal aplomb on the B Side bump of "See In The Light".

Solid Inner City chords and crisp, bright drums abound on side A, with "Night Rays" sure to inflict some damage with its fulsome square wave bassline. On the flipside, "Never Forget" ups the tempo for a cut that dresses like tech house but moves like 2-step. Waze & Odyssey themselves bring a smoother, deeper vibe to bear on their remix of "Riddim", pulling the melodic content right back to subtle flecks for a greater dramatic impact.

Their irrepressible formula for classicist referencing house music is very much on display with lead track "Hold Up (Yeah You)" deftly matching emotive pads with a bumping groove and one of those simple yet oh so very effective vocal hooks. Another potential W&O hit in the making. How The Fly Saved The River (Lorca remix)
Review: With the sublime summer hit "Hoop Dreams" still ringing in our ears, Blacksmif returns for his second outing on the BlahBlahBlah label. Opting not to tinker with the lush post-garage formula that made his debut such a winner, he presents a similarly urgent take on melodic bass music with "How The Fly Saved The River", as rolling yet distant UKF inspired snares tumble over a collage of fractured vocals and hazy stabs, while "Kangs Odyssey" takes a slightly more laid back approach with its jazzy arrangement that recalls a slightly more focused James Blake. Remix duties for the title track fall to Dummy Records and left_blank artist Lorca, who transform it into a piece of dubbed out yet melodic house music which should go down a storm on the dancefloor, making the insistent bass stand out even more against its spacious backdrop. Fans of Jacques Greene should check this!

Review: Having spotted an opportunity to reclaim '90s revivalism with his rebooted Madtech label, Kerri Chandler turns to the equally hyped Waze & Odyssey to deliver some heady, late night thrills. Predictably, they deliver, offering a selection of tracks that meld cut-up vocal wails and smooth atmospherics to punchy '90s drums. Both "Be Right There" and "Ride The Rhythm" tread a similar path, focusing the action around mutant vocal samples and well-observed '90s house sonics. Citizen provides the obligatory remix of the title track, shuffling the elements around and adding some extra percussive pressure.

Review: The So Submissive EP sees some of 90s house revivalists most ubiquitous characters collide on a clear red slab of vinyl. It marks the return to Madtech for the dreadlocked Citizen following his debut for Kerri Chandler's label last year and comes backed with a remix from like minded duo Waze & Odyssey. Citizen is on typical form here, with both the title track and "Stronger With You" characterised by doleful vocal treatments, crisp drumming and pensive, soul infused melodic touches. Waze & Odyssey elect to rework the latter track, perhaps due to the more interesting vocal sample and offer a more jacking rendition that comes replete with a fidgeting undercurrent.

Psychofreud's remix is the best executed blend with searing amens and vocals that sound uncannily familiar to Skiba, Fun and Shotta's UNCZ battle-raps. If you're looking for something a lot more unforgiving then head direct to Vandal Tek's gabba remix. Dope Ammo thankfully take things back down to a more sensible D&B pace with a Hazard-style jump up riff and great emphasis on the female vocals. Need more? Review: Jam & Spoon are a quality brand name that has given so much pleasure to so many lovers of dance and trance music the world over. For well over a decade Jam & Spoon has symbolised creative and revolutionary electronic music, becoming cult figures for a whole party generation. Mark Spoon, the enfant terrible of dance music, who contributed in his unique style at all the major electronic music events, and his congenial music partner Jam El Mar, not only led the way in the dance scene but set, and kept raising, the standards for a very long time. By way of celebrating the musical achievements of DJ legend Mark Spoon, who tragically passed away January 11th 2006 (he was only 39 years old), it has been decided to release these two vinyl's with Jam & Spoon Club Classics.

Review: What impact will it have on your musical taste when you experience the Sex Pistols playing live in New York standing outside the venue as a ten year old boy? Does witnessing Grace Jones dancing stark-naked in her own club in Dallas affect your perception of disco culture? Ask Walter Jones! His latest 12" is a blend of raw disco beats and catchy old-school electro licks. The first track 'Deuteronomy Brown' is an italo-style dancefloor bomb, bound to drag people off their seats. Support by: Ewan Pearson, I-f, Sebo K, DJ Hell, JD Twitch, Diskokaine, DJ Naughty.

Review: British power duo Waze & Odyssey take a break from their always reliable W&O Street Tracks for an appearance on Edible; the Bristol based imprint by Eats Everything and Nick Harris and follows up great releases by Steve Mac and Robert Bruce aka Rhythm Masters and Merseyside's Mele. On the A side, we've got the bouncy and funked up tech house of "Down With Tha" where that very vocal loop is chopped up to perfection. On the flip, we have got the deep and sexy tribal house groove of "Seizure" which will take you back to the turn of the millennium on this west coast style groove, that calls to mind the heyday of Hipp-E & Halo or Tyler Stadius.

Review: Debut release on Macadamia Melodies from "Down Under". 4 chunky funky cuts for all the disco nuts in town. Baby Huey, Kurtis Blow and Melle Mel take turns on the mic on top a serious Lalo Schifrin groove. Dimples D raps over a Commodores funk jam and "For Dubs Sake Part 1" is a short but sweet edit.

Review: The bastard children of the infamous Dumas/Mascotte family present the first 12" in a series to come. Chopped up Sugarhill Gang cowbells give you an old school breakdance feel and at the end there’s unlimited percussion going off like a wild carnival night in Rio. Its latintechnohiphopelectrodisco or something similar. On the flipside, Pitch & Hold remix it into a 13 minute dancefloor odyssey.

Please Don't Dance (Detroit Swindle Basement dub)
Review: It's hard to describe Waze & Odyssey as anything but relentless in their release schedule with this debut turn for the Dirt Crew label following a twelve month period where the duo have racked up appearances on Throne of Blood, Disco Bloodbath, Southern Fried Records, Body Work and their own Street Tracks label. Leading the way on the Please Don't Dance EP is "All For Me" which brandishes an accoutrement synthesised horns stabs and vocals that sound like they're stuck in a gravatron. Alongside it, the title track is notable for some buzz saw synth lines that can only be described as proto-fidget. Flip over and the equally ubiquitous Detroit Swindle go all deep and rhythmic on their self styled Basement Dub of "Please Don't Dance".

The Odyssey VIP (4:37)
The Illiad (4:59)
Review: Having been dormant for more than a decade, Grooverider's Prototype Recordings label has sprung back into life. While they've been selling back catalogue items via their website for a few months, this 12" marks the legendary imprint's first new release since 2004. Fittingly, the A-side boasts a brand new "VIP" version of the last cut the label put out first time round, Drumsound and Bassline Smith's ferocious "The Odyssey". If anything, this 2017 "VIP" version is, if anything, even heavier - a ground-shaking fusion of razor sharp riffs, wobbling sub-bass madness and sweaty D&B breakbeats. Flipside "The Illiad" is pretty slamming, too, but contains some seriously dreamy and life-affirming build-ups and breakdowns, too.

Review: The Normalmen are far from normal when it comes to their signature house sound, and since their debut EP for the excellent Early Sounds Collective last year, we've held them with high regard and have eagerly awaited their next moves. This time they appear for London's White Jail, the vinyl-only imprint affiliated to the club night, and they've packed a full punch of disco house vibes for the dancefloor. "Opus46" is a quirky, bouncy little bomb for the warm up hours, while "Asian Spectrum" is a little harder and 303-laced, with the "Arp Arcanum" providing the beatless experimentation. Over on side B, "The Lushifer" is a funky nu-boogie piece, "Misamoto Mansion" reminds us of pieces on Mathematics, and "Antrumm Odyssey"itself could easily be heard in a set by Moody, Theo or anyone else in the Detroit contingent. Classy.

Trueman - "Odyssey Saga"
Review: The Uducha label showcases its fifth release with a various artist EP housing cuts from a mixed bag of names. Alex Danilov, Brother G and Yuri Shulgin team up for a triple collab resulting in the track "Untitled", a swerving and fruity mix of flutes, chimes, pads and dusty drums. A5 makes use of some Ray Manzarek keys, sampling the Doors "Riders On The Storm", layering some noisy electronics over the top, while Kurvenschreiber keeps things psychedelic with some Krautrock styled synthesis in "Leitweg". Trueman then debuts on Uducha 5 with a whimsical and cool summer sounding "Odyssey Saga".

Review: Before popping up on Tirk with the decidedly fuzzy Set Phazers To Stun LP, Grid man Richard Norris was making a name for himself with a series of ultra-limited, vinyl-only albums of psychedelic rock re-edits. Like the early Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve reworks (which, of course, Norris was also involved in) after a few days on 60s-strength acid, those Time & Space Machine LPs were quite rightly much sought-after. "Turns You On" gathers together the best material from those vinyl releases, offering up a flash-fried fusion of heavy rock riffage, delay-laden percussion, backwards tape loops, strange spoken word samples, uneasy listening grooves and string-laden folk-rock oddness.

Review: Over a few short years, Tornado Wallace has gone from being a promising nu-disco producer, to one capable of creating brilliant Balearica. Lonely Planet is his debut album, and must rank as his finest work to date. The seven tracks are dreamy, trippy and atmospheric - we'd expect nothing less - and draw on a far wider palette of Balearic influences than we've heard on previous experiences. Coupled with a new-found desire to include more live instrumentation (particularly glistening, Peter Green style guitar passages, drums and exotic flutes), the result is an album that's as evocative, dreamy and humid as anything he's produced to date. In other words, it's a great album and comes highly recommended.
