Review: The latest missive in the evocative and open-minded Late Night Tales series comes from Agnes Obel, a Danish singer/songwriter whose fragile, pastoral songs seemingly join the dots between traditional folk music, neo-classical and early music. Fittingly, Obel's selections, while more diverse than many may have expected - see the soulful reggae throb of Nora Dean, the creepy jazz of Yello's "Great Mission" and the whispered synth-pop shuffle of Lena Platanos - are every bit as atmospheric and ethereal as her own work. It helps that she's included several of her own compositions, alongside inspired cuts that touch on Berlin School ambient, hazy easy listening, neo-classical, psychedelia, lo-fi art rock and, of course, folk.

Ennio Morricone's legacy is well known across the world, or at least the world of cinephiles. The legendary film composer is responsible or no less than 400 movie and TV scores (in fact, he's made a few more), with a 100-strong oeuvre of classical compositions to add to that storied back catalogue. Sadly lost last year at the age of 91- unrelated to coronavirus - much of his work is now rightfully returning to the release schedule.

Of course, none of his output can match the music he created to accompany Spaghetti Westerns - Italian made cowboy movies from directors such as another late-great, Sergio Leone, including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars. 134 of the finest arrangements from that part of his life are included on this mammoth collector's item, which proves you don't really need visuals to be transported to the wild frontier towns of yesterday.

Review: Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - Cole, Blair Cowan, Lawrence Donegan, Neil Clark and Stephen Irvine - were formed in Glasgow in 1982, where Buxton-born singer-songwriter Cole was studying Philosophy and English at the University. A paragon of 'well-read pop music', this might be considered an form of art pop, being the debut that cemented Cole's intellectual reputation, and perhaps a prototype of the popular 'softboy' trope from the early 80s. Crisp soft proto-indie rock and haunting, near gothic synths underlie hits such as 'Forest Fire', sure to rouse emotions even in the coldest and most book-shy of listeners.

Review: New York maestro and Loose Control Band member DJ Spun has served up a superb compilation for Above Board here. It is his third such collection and one that focusses on the specific subject of West Coast breaks, rave and electro funk from the late eighties to mid-cities. It was a fertile scene by this account and one that still sounds current today, right from the blistering open eats and trance-like synths of Tasti Box's 'San Francisco' to Deep2's old school house jacker 'Sphere' which closes out the double pack. In between are plenty of gems, not least the deep and dreamy sounds of Hawke's '3 Moods In A Purple Garden' (Robbie Hardkiss mix).

Review: It could be said that the work of Aussie label Anjunadeep doesn't really get the spotlight it deserves. It's been serving up some fine deep and progressive house sounds for many years now, serving as a launch pad for artists like Dusky amongst others. This new album from former pizza delivery driver CRI is a follow-up and spiritual successor to his debut album Juvenile which was also released on this label. Review: Considered by some to be one of the greatest IDM albums of all time (though we'd argue that it's really an electro set), Drexciya's 2002 set 'Harnessed The Storm' has been given the 20th anniversary reissue treatment. Pressed to striking silver vinyl and housed in freshly redesigned packaging, it's certainly an alluring album. It was part of a series of conceptually linked sets the pair recorded in 12 months (most of the others were subsequently released under other aliases after the surprise death of member James Stinson), and it has a typically atmospheric, other-worldly sound - underwater sci-fi electro that twisted standard Motor City tropes into a variety of futuristic directions. Highlights include the fizzing 'Digital Tsunami', the beautiful and widescreen 'Under Sea Disturbances' (a freakishly sub-heavy affair) and the clandestine shimmer of 'Lake Haze'.

Review: Having previously celebrated dance and pop hits of the 1980s, the long-running Now That's What I Call Music series - itself established that decade - has turned its attention to "alternative". Review: Based in Bristol, Habitus is a beat-maker, rapper and DJ from the Canary Islands. "Mind De Sample" is his debut album and it's really rather good. Featuring dusty, sample-heavy beats reminiscent of some of the greats (Dilla and DJ Premier, who both mined the hazier end of funk, soul and jazz spectrum) and an impressive cast-list of Spanish and British MCs (Verb T, Goose, Chillman, Res One, Datkid, Sadomas, Holly Flo Lightly, Emblema, Talia, Dr Syntax, Mac Lloyd and Bill Next all feature), it's the kind of laidback, soulful and sunny set that should warm the heart of anyone who appreciates quality underground hip-hop.

Four decades after first release it remains a classic of the genre that Mondo, Backlot Music and Howe Records now serve up for the first time ever on vinyl. It was produced by Howard Shore and Alan Frey and comes on original artwork by Rich Kelly, with great liner notes by Annette DiGiovanni and pressed on 180 g vinyl.
