Review: Marina Herlop's latest album Pripyat is a striking addition to the intersection-canon of effected sound, piano and voice. Every track on the album, from 'abans abans' to the choral version of 'miu', recalls glitching piano swirls, high-intoned wail-songs, and references to every electronic-musical microgenre from lowercase to footwork to Carnatic Konnakol. For us, it's giving Bjork, chiptune and Principe, styles which are somehow all exhaled in the same breath - though maybe we should stop trying to draw too many comparisons, as Herlop brings them all neatly together in an impressive seven-track move that clearly defies overt categorization.

Review: The Nunorthern Soul label heads into its second decade of operation and does so by welcoming back label regular Benjamin J Smith. He's a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer whose sound tick all of the textbook Balearic boxes but with a little extra magic. He shows that again here with 'Marina Del Rey', a gloriously sunny sound with lavish and lush strings and gently swaying grooves with a mix of 60s and Library vibes. On the flip is the even more horizontal 'Big Sur' with its romantic melodic breeze and intoxicating instrumental leads all backed by rich vocals.

Review: Relative newcomers Infradisco blend a Balearic sound of disco and house for the Italian label Archeo Recordings. Aqua Cheta is a blend of proper electronic examples of Balearic and chill out influences. 'Caduca' (Hear & Now remix) is ideal for the late-night scene with a blend a perfect blend of 80s and 90s but still sounding futuristic. Manu Archeo's remix of 'Dulcis' is a beautiful laid back downtempo jam that shimmers like a hazy day on the beach. We think you will like the organic and mystical 'Fluminea' as well. This EP couldn't finish any better than on the ambient tip with a soul warming float on the marina remix by Ocean Moon. Fans of Balearic, Cafe Del Mar and chill out music will treasure this EP no doubt. This 12" comes with a CD as well.

If the name is anything to go by, then the aim of the game is to offer a sonic blueprint for artists trying to quietly, subtly, resist the status quo, while also keeping the family close and remaining level-headed and happy. Examining her past and present, James offers with everything from transstep trances made with RiTchie and George Riley, to math-rock and emo-infleuenced tracks ('One Way Ticket...') and even self-sung ballads ('2003').

Review: Loraine James continues to trust her instincts and serve us some of the most honest and original music within the leftfield electronic sphere right now. Having recently paid tribute to the work of Julius Eastman on Build Something Beautiful For Me, now she retunes to Hyperdub with the record she claims the teenage version of her would have made. The label text makes explicit reference to the likes of DNTEL and Telefon Tel Aviv as well as math rock, but James is also way out in her own zone metabolising such influences into unique expression. There are some wonderful guest spots from the likes of RiTchie, Marina Herlop and Eden Samara, while James herself centres her voice for some of the album's most poignant moments. Gentle Confrontation is another outstanding chapter in James' ever-intriguing story.

Multi Faith Prayer Room is their most ambitious album to date, including collaborations with Mykki Blanco, Azekel, Marina Herlop, Kom_I, Sophie Hunger and Duane Harden. It flaunts a mastery over a certain modern, hybrid approach to making electronic music, combining drumming, bass, piano and vocals with drum machines and synths. A diverse, sprawling, border-melting, widescreen take on many dance genres out there.

Review: Gerry Anderson's Stingray is one of those superbly nostalgic and cult TV shows that, when thinking about them now, transports you right back to your childhood - unless you're lucky enough to be too young to have seen it first time around that is. The series followed the World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASPs) on several underwater adventures with a superb soundtrack from Barry Gray adding style and drama to the aquatic odyssey. From minimalist electronic pieces to lush strings, jazzier motifs and driving military marches, this gatefold silver vinyl version of the completed soundtrack is a real doozy.

Review: 2024 has begun pretty much as 2023 left off - a shit show on a 23.5 degree axis, hurtling through space on an orbit around a ball of fire which will one day destroy everything on it. And plenty of news suggesting humanity won't be around to see that happen. Perhaps ironically, though, in terms of music it's been incredibly strong, with a slew of excellent albums gracing our shelves in the first few weeks of the year alone. 33EMYBW's Holes of Sinian is one for that list, with the Shanghai producer making a very strong case for futurism. Sonically, then, this all feels advanced, tracks that might pre-empt where dance music is heading next, flitting between the cyber glitchiness of 'Fielda', the deep, Far Eastern ambient of 'Blood Child', and organic, percussive synth-folk-step on 'Holes of Time'. An amalgamation not just of noises, but schools of musical and its history.

Review: DJ Vadim's Feel Up Vol 2 was, we're told, inspired by things as different and unusual as Nassau, Covid and Grace Jones. It is an album that he lured himself into when the world shut down during Covid and has resulted in a vibrant record that mixes up dub, hip-hop and reggae. It is said to reflect the "tropical music festival" he created in his mind while in lockdown and brings pop, soul and African influences to the fore. Plenty of guests feature such as Rayjah45 & Javada, Queenie & Syross and Lasai & FABjustfa amongst many more across four sides of superb wax.

Review: Reposado aka Tequila Funk brings more Latin and Afro flavours magic to this new 7". It makes a perfectly international soundtrack for global dancefloor fun with A-side 'All You Got To Do' bringing an uptempo soul vibe with some legendary guitar from the one and only Jimmy James, while some soulful background cooing comes from Alex Rose. It's a feelgood gem that will unite all who hear it and then the reverse is a salsa-tinged delight. 'Original' has masterful piano from Marina Albero and is an irresistible gem that completes a fine two-tracker.
