Review: Whilst there are plenty of producers from Detroit who command the 'legendary' prefix, Sherard Ingram is more worthy than most. His work as Urban Tribe - which includes the album The Collapse Of Modern Culture produced in tow with Carl Craig, Anthony Shake Shakir and Moodymann - has marked Ingram out amongst the second wave of Detroit techno acts. Ingram also pioneered the usage of electro tracks at 45rpm whilst playing in clubs as DJ Stingray. The Loyal Oppostion EP sees Urban Tribe resurface on the Planet E imprint (with a spot of help from C2C) and gives you four tracks of abstract mutant techno. On "Micro Manager" lush Detroit soundscapes are given the jackhammer treatment by uptempo kicks, whilst "Sycophant" offers up brooding motor city soul at its best. The punishing jagged industrial funk of "Apathy" and the abundance of lackadaisical synth washes on "Insolitology" round off a return to form for Planet E.

Review: As with pretty much all Kenny Dixon Jnr releases, Moodymann - his eleventh full-length - has caused something of a stir, with vinyl copies selling out in the blink of an eye. Now on CD, the album remains one of his best - a kaleidoscopic, fast-paced sprint through soul-soaked deep house, baked drum machine jams, jazz-flecked interludes and low-slung grooves. Dixon's distinctive drawl is more prominent than on some previous excursions - no bad thing - while fans will notice a slew of alternative versions of KDJ classics - "Freeki M*thaf*cka" being perhaps the best known. Best of all, though, are the more downbeat moments - see "Heaven" and "Stupid Cosmic" - which allow Dixon to indulge his atmospheric tendencies. In a word: essential.

KDJ - "Untitled 1" (4:00)
KDJ - "Untitled 2" (5:35)
Rick Wade - "Thought Process" (6:35)
Rick Wade - "Forever Night" (6:34)
Review: The Moods & Grooves Classics series - in which vintage, long deleted gems from the back catalogue get another airing - continues with a strong quartet of tracks from Kenny Dixon Jnr and Rick Wade. The two untitled tracks from Dixon, under his occasional KDJ moniker, originally slipped out way back in 2000. Both are superb, with the goodtime shuffle of "Untitled 2" (all jangly house pianos and looped disco-influenced grooves) just losing out to the slower, African-inspired "Untitled 1" in the "EP highlight" stakes. Wade's two contributions - deep, spacious, blazed and deliciously melodious - are taken from his 1999 Quantum Expression EP. Of these, it's the enveloping, jazz-flecked warmth of "Forever Night" that stands out

Emotional Content (TPs Emotionally Deep remix)
Review: New music from Kenny Dixon Jnr is a rarity these days so the chance to reacquaint oneself with a classic from his sizeable archives should not be passed up. Terrence Parker's stormingly soulful rendition of "Emotional Content" originally surfaced on his own Intangible Records & Soundworks label back in 1995; commencing with the opening phrase "I said Emotional Content, not Angerbitch," this mid 90s Detroit jammer helped to establish the mythical status of Moodymann, and has been an out of print and highly sought after gem for some ten years. Licensed and fully remastered by JD Records with full and kind permission of Intangible Records & Soundworks, Parker's 'Emotionally Deep' remix has not lost any of it's emotional depth despite it's vintage and that's a clear hallmark of a true classic.

Review: Given the brilliantly simple concept behind this fine compilation - contemporary Detroit producers remix Funkadelic - we're rather surprised nobody's done it before. With 17 varied re-rubs stretched across three slabs of wax, there's naturally plenty to enjoy. Highlights come thick and fast, from the deep house/P-funk fusion of Alton Miller's take on "Get Your Ass Off and Jam" and Andres' loose, hip-hop influenced revision of "Music For My Mother", to the thrusting loops and heady late night hypnotism of Anthony Shake Shakir and T-Dancer's version of "Standing on the Verge". While many of the versions stay relatively faithful to the original, the more "out-there" interpretations - see BMG's outer-space ambient dub of "Maggot Brain" and Moodymann's epic revision of "Cosmic Slop" - are also consistently impressive.

Review: Every so often, a compilation comes along and delivers a snapshot of a city's underground music scene at a given moment in time. That's what compilers Rick Wilhite and Delano Smith have achieved with Parabellum Detroit, an expansive and predictably high-quality collection of cuts from some of the Motor City's finest producers. They naturally provide a couple of collaborative cuts of their own - the spacey, late-night techno hypnotism of '11 Minutes of Funk' and the intergalactic deep house drift of 'Neo Solaris', while there are also top-notch contributions from Javontte (the warm, soul-flecked deep house of 'Late Night Love'), Marcellus Pittman (beatdown chugger 'Everybody Party'), Gerald Mitchell AKA Soul Saver (the incredible 'Kaori'), the Moodymann Kenny Dixon Jr ( 'I'm Goin' Back') and Omar-S (a tidy Godson remix of 'VAT 69').

Review: Since its' initial release back in 2000, Theo Parrish's Methods Of Movement mix has attained cult status. 16 years on, the set has lost none of its' potency, or for that matter its' ability to entertain. An exercise in classic dancefloor eclecticism, it offers a sprint through dusty disco, soul, funk, Afrobeat, boogie, Detroit techno and deep house. It's effectively the kind of set you'd expect Parrish to play at a house party, laying down favourites from Tullio De Piscopo (the Balearic classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)", Luther Vandross, Tony Allen, Incognito, First Choice and pal Kenny Dixon Jr. Packed full of energy, and shot through with soul, Methods Of Movement is Theo Parrish at his mercurial best.

Review: Jerome Derradji's In The Dark compilation, a fine collection of soul flecked, club-ready productions from the Motor City, first surfaced back in 2012. Happily, Derradji has decided to reissue it, allowing those who missed out first time around a chance to revel in its hazy warmth and jazz-fired beauty. There's naturally much to set the pulse racing, from the lo-fi deep house shuffle of Marcellus Pittman's "A Walk Thru Osaka" and Delano Smith's breezy, dubby, piano-heavy "Hot 'N' Funky" - think '88 at the Paradise Garage - to the undulating Latin rhythms, rich chords and fluid melodies of Mike Huckaby's "Melodies From The Jazz Republic". "Bosmos", a jazzy and hypnotic co-production by Rick 'The Godson' Wilhite and Kenny Dixon Jr, is also superb.

Review: What the deuce? !K7 return with yet another essential DJ Kicks mix. Hot on the heels of Matthew Dear and Michael Meyer comes ace-serving selector DJ Tennis. Famed for his deep drawing style and ability to whip up atmospheres like some type of DJ sorcerer, his debut mix album was always going to be special. Perhaps not this special, though. Two CDs ranging from the most startling and serene contemporary ambient (Bauri - "Twinkle Stars"), to fluid body-shifting machine funk techno (Robert Hood - "Escapes") via warm house laced with subtle layers of sleaze (Oval - "Textuell") and crackling theatrical breaks (Jon Hopkins - "Vessel"), Tennis has taken his club chops and presented them in a much more timeless and flexible context. Just as all the best DJ Kicks mixes do. Love.

In The Dark: Voices (DVD)
Review: Chicago based imprint Still Music earn a hearty slap on the back from all at Juno by reissuing the killer In The Dark: The Soul Of Detroit compilation they originally put out back in 2005. This CD version contains all twelve tracks from the original release as well as some must see bonus material in the shape of a previously unreleased documentary on an accompanying DVD. "In the Dark: Voices" is a 30-minute piece on the Motor City scene at the time of the original album release, featuring the testimonies and footage of some key figures, such as Ron Trent, DJ 3000, Wilhite and Huckaby on two slabs of vinyl. On the CD are seminal tracks from Motor City deities like Delano Smith, Moodymann & Rick Wilhite and Keith Worthy. For our money it's the cuts from Malik (aka Marcellus) Pittman and Mike Huckaby that elevate this release from the merely very good to the downright brilliant. Essential.
