Review: For all her otherworldly talents, even hardcore fans of Joanna Newsom will likely be relieved to hear that 'Divers' marks a very slight move back from the artistic brink compared to 2010's 'Have One On Me', an exhausting triple-album embarrassment of riches which few ever made it though in one go. Yet there's no hint of compromise on the deliriously thrilling 'Divers', despite its slightly more concise approach - the elegant yet baroque wordplay, ornate and innovative arrangements and Newsom's unique voice are all present and correct - yet more, these emotive and engaging ditties may mark the most accessible thing this iconoclastic and mercurial artist has thus far summoned from the ether.

Anita Barrows Recites Selections From Rainer Maria Rilke's 'The Book Of Hours' (17:40)
Joanna Macy Recites Selections From Rainer Maria Rilke's 'The Book Of Hours' (20:49)
Review: If you're looking for rousing music to get you going in the morning let's make it clear right now - Be Earth Now ain't it. If you've been looking for a recording of Joanna Macy and Anita Barrow's translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's 1899 poem, 'The Book of Hours', then you, friend, are very much in the right place. The prose itself is as deep as they come, touching on mysticism, the depth of emotions humans are capable of, our loss of connection to the planet (well ahead of its time, then), and ideas around achieving some degree of spiritual satisfaction. Made at a time when industrialisation had already transformed Europe and increasingly large swathes of the US, in many ways the sentiments expressed are just as relevant now, at a point in time when the journey to modernism is pretty much complete across the world, and the repercussions of that are only just starting to be acknowledged.

Review: Sounds of the Sea was one of the first albums from Joanna Brouk, a West Coast sonic explorer who emerged somewhere around the boom in DIY tapes of ambient music in the early 80s. Brouk distanced herself from the platitudes of new age music and instead probed at more mysterious moods in her pieces, best captured in this highlight from the run of cassettes she first released. Numero Group have taken up the mantle and reissued Sounds of the Sea for the first time, bringing the swathes of pads and cascading flute to the attention of a much wider audience, finally.

Review: Joanna Brouk perhaps doesn't get the recognition she deserves as a pioneering spirit in electronic music. In the early 80s, she released a run of new age recordings which helped define the emergent genre, and now stand proud as landmark works which reach beyond the usual sonic platitudes to strike some compelling chords.1981 album Sounds Of The Sea is now being reissued for the first time by Numero Group and its relevance feels all the more pointed in the wider appreciation and prevalence of ambient music in the present day. Mysterious and captivating in equal measure, it's a marvel of dense pad drones and soaring flute that perfectly evokes its aquatic muse.

Review: The late Joanna Brouk's legacy as an electronic music pioneer is a mysterious one, given her rejection of industry conventions in favour of a more heartfelt connection with her craft. Her run of new age releases in the early 80s were landmarks of the genre, and now Numero Group are reissuing one of the finest of them now. Sounds Of The Sea originally came out in 1981, and it's never been reissued since. Making its first ever appearance on vinyl, this captivating, mysterious album remains wholly out of time and place, existing in its own sphere inhabited by flute, drones and whale song alike.

It finds Alvarez delve into the core essence of his music, capturing the raw energy and authenticity that define his sound across eight party ready cuts. Review: From their early jazz roots to their pop picking party time peak via their late 70s dabbles with disco, Kool & The Gang have dominated airwaves and dancefloors en mass for over 50 years, and this is one of most comprehensive collections of their work ever curated. Obviously all the big hits are present and correct but it's the lesser spotted (but still just as floor poking) jams that really make this collection shine; the hip wriggling "Slick Superchick", the swooning mournful chord changes of "Too Hot" and the sleaziest bassline they ever laid down in the form of "Higher Plane" are but three stone cold killing examples. Good times...

Review: Compilation maestros BBE are back with another gem, this time from Belgian DJ and tastemaker Lefto. His The Beauty is Inside is a 19-track gem from across the musical spectrum with sounds from all over the world. It shines a light and shows respect to everything from Ethiopian singer Alemayehu Eshete to South African singer and actress Patience Africa via Spanish composer Pedro Ruy-Blas. All these original tracks are from up-and-coming artists who Lefto feel deserve a bigger platform. It makes for a fascinating listen and serves up plenty of red hot talents.

Review: Ben Carr is Carrtoons, a much hyped multi-instrumentalist and producer from New York. He has some mad skills on the electric bass and brings that to all of his tunes which range from innocent dance-pop ditties to loved-up new soul slow jams and late night hip-hop all with superb samples adding extra class. After a fine debut album Drink Edition, he is back with another full length that will soon swell your heart and make its way into your affections as well as your summer playlists. Saturday Morning has guests like Rae Khali and Topaz Jones and coupled with the well informed and original production they make for a standout record.

Review: In truth, not all DJs are genuine "tastemakers", but Lefto most certainly is. Like the similarly minded - if far older and more experienced - Gilles Peterson, Lefto gets as much pleasure from introducing people to new and obscure music, as he does from rocking clubs. It's for that reason The Beauty Is Inside, a terrific, lightly blended mix of eclectic, far-sighted sounds hand-picked by the Belgian, is such essential listening. It naturally contains some slept-on tackle from the past - see the cuts by Ethiopian singer Alemayeu Eshete and South African artist Patience Africa - but even more killer contemporary fare, with highlights including the contributions of Qur'an Shaheed, Elisa Bee, fellow Belgians abrahamblue and contemporary jazz hero Makaya McCraven.

Review: Sky Girl is the work of two noted (but arguably under-appreciated) crate diggers, DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery, and gathers together a veritable treasure trove of obscure material loosely connected by (in the label's own words) "the same longing sentiment". Its' fifteen tracks touch on a variety of hazy, down-tempo styles, and were recorded at various points between 1961 and '91. There's much to admire throughout, from the folksy psychedelic pop of The Rising Storm's "Frozen Laughter", and spoken word eccentricity of Scott Seskind's "I Remember", to the dreamy, eyes-closed ambience of Nini Raviolette & Hugo Weris' "Slow" and string-laden samba-folk of Nora Guthrie's "Home Before Dark".
