GDNCE 008 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: GDNCE 008. Rel: 13 Aug 19
Drum And Bass
  1. Ulterior Motive - "Trip Hammer" (4:58)
  2. Quadrant, Iris, Ulterior Motive - "Intuition" (6:04)
Review: Guidance strike again! Two sides, two vibes: first up the label bossmen Ulterior Motive continue their ripping vein of form with the weapon's grade stepper "Trip Hammer" that hits with serious space around every gritty funk element. Flip for a hook-up with dynamic US duo Quadrant & Iris as we're taken down a wormhole of dark delights at a white knuckle pace that doesn't let up. Huge shouts to Guidance right here.

Deep House
  1. Sidehacker (6:38)
  2. Intellect's Intuitive Waste (Garrett David remix) (6:47)
  3. Intellect's Intuitive Waste (6:15)
  4. Limited Trance (4:14)
Review: Love Notes turns its affections towards the Windy City with this exemplary 12" from Chicago producer Shmoo, who is no slouch in the energy department when rolling out the pumped up deep house delights of "Sidehacker". "Intellect's Intuitive Waste" is no slouch either, taking a brighter sunshine approach compared to "Sidehacker"s nocturnal veneer, and "Limited Trance" keeps the jack up while letting the additional tones and textures take things deeper. Garrett David gets busy with "Intellect's Intuitive Waste", creating a crafty remix steeped in intriguing percussion without losing that housey focus that defines the Love Notes approach.

Born Again In The Voltage (limited LP) (1 per customer)
Cat: IMPREC 460. Rel: 15 Aug 18
  1. Human Developers (12:43)
  2. Rendering Intuitions (6:34)
  3. How To Decode An Illusion (8:26)
  4. We Access Only A Fraction (9:00)
Review: Italian composer turned analogue electronics wizard Caterina Barbieri has always been able to create mesmerizing, otherworldly music with only a small array of instruments. Born Again In The Voltage, her latest full-length excursion, was recorded between 2014 and 2015 using a Buchla 200 synthesizer, a cello and her own voice. Naturally, the results are astonishing. Check, for example, 12-minute album opener, "Human Developers", where discordant, mournful and post apocalyptic cello motifs are slowly enveloped by trademark Buchla synth sounds. In contrast, the beautiful "Rendering Intuitions" puts subtly shifting cello parts at the centre of a heady ambient soup, while triumphant closer "We Access Only A Fraction" sounds like restless, metronomic proto-techno smothered in trippy vocalizations.

  9. Numbers - "Moonblood" (IG SOS mix)
  10. Honey Sweet - "I Put A Spell On You" (feat Cindy Mizelle)
  11. Skymark - "Finding The Peace"
  12. Harry Whitaker - "The After Life" (part 2)
  13. Tony Williams - "Lawra" (Volcov edit)
Review: Two years ago, Volcov set our pulses racing with From The Archive, a superb selection of killer cuts from the depth of his notoriously impressive record collection. Volume 2 is equally as inspired, though the focus is a little different. Whereas Volcov previously chose to concentrate on soul, funk and disco, this edition is far more widescreen in scope. So, we get soaring soul-jazz bliss (Collective Peace's "Let The Music Play"), head-nodding hip-hop soul (Eric Lau remixing Ruth Koleva), futurist jazz-funk (Ron Trent's wild but brilliant "Ori Space"), soul-fired broken beat (Volcov's own re-edit of Xantone Blacq's vintage remix of Intuit's "Planet Birth"), impeccable soundscape jazz ("Lawra" by Tony Williams) and much more besides.

Stood Beneath The Sun EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: PHO 002. Rel: 15 Aug 18
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Intuition (7:19)
  2. Soul Love (7:49)
  3. Soul Love (Rich NxT remix) (7:04)
Review: Newcastle duo Moonlit Vision are back with a right killer on new German imprint Phorus, who presented a great inaugural release by Niko Maxen a little while back. The Stood Beneath The Sun EP features the deep down and dirty groove of "Intuition" (which would go down a treat at the afterhours), while the bass driven and percussive energy of "Soul Love" is more suited to the beach party - later that afternoon. It receives a ripper of a rework by London stalwart Rich NxT, which is quite fitting as the duo appeared on his What NxT imprint earlier this year. A must have for fans of funked up and tripped-out tech house in the vein of Djebali, Archie Hamilton or Jack Wickham. Tip!
