Hong Sau (3:22)
Elephant Walk (3:05)
Review: A gentle psychedelic downtempo single offering from 10-piece Californian Afro-funk group In Motion Collective. While there are too many musicians to sing all their praises equally, Joe Harrison and Dillon Casey do fantastic guitar work on side A with 'Hong Sau', featuring a reverse guitar solo. The track is mellow and not too far removed from the realm of Lo-FI Hip-hop, it's cinematic and beautiful but still packs a punch despite its gentle nature. 'Elephant Walk', as the name would imply, is more forceful with its guitar riffs and percussion, done by the talented Mitchum Yacoub. The track is a theatrical groover that doesn't take itself too seriously, despite its rich and detailed instrumental. You can listen to these songs over and over and hear something new each time - or so I would hope with it being 10 people and all.

In Motion (11:23)
Don't Play (feat Ava) (10:07)
Review: Theo Parrish is one of those characters who manages to unite lovers of both house and techno, indeed producing offerings that seem to make the distinction utterly redundant. How does he doe it? Well, if this pair of new tracks are anything to go on, it's the simple trick of making tracks that combine the soufulness and rootsy earthiness of house with a trippy sense of the futuristic and psychedelic that elevates them out of the ordinary.
Take, for instance 'In Motion's simple piano stabs and the subsequent off kilter groove that builds up around them. Or, equally, the cheeky bass keyboard manoeuvres that form the backbone of 'Don't Play' featuring Ava, funky enough to be Stevie Wonder but then matched with caustic, scything hi-hats that have more than a hint of the surreal and robotic about them. Best of all, it doesn't feel like a compromise, it feels like a full on creation that acknowledges both traditions but refuses to follow either slavishly.

Vanity (feat Rachel Goswell)
Cape Perpetua
The Skin & The Glove
Yield To Force
Review: Described by their label, Dais, as "a stirring new chapter" in their musical story, 'An object of Motion' has its roots in a coastal break main man Deb Demure made back in 2021. It was material recorded there, largely using a vintage, bowl-shaped 12-string guitar, that formed the basis of the four-track mini-album. These recordings were then expanded on with help from collaborators Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Ben Greenberg. It's a decidedly psychedelic set all told, with Demure and company blurring the boundaries between neo-folk, psychedelia, the Cure, shoegaze and the sort of saucer-eyed, turn-of-the-90s bagginess associated with the Stone Roses. Most impressive of all, though, is 'Yield To Force', an undeniably cosmic, layered and effects-laden instrumental that ebbs and flows over 15 magical minutes.

Review: Drab Majesty was first set up by Andrew Clinco in the beating heart of the US music industry, Los Angeles. It's here, in a metropolis defined by both glitz, glamour and plastic, and wild experimentation and unconventional thinking, that the artist once best known as drummer in Marriages adopted a new androgynous persona, Deb Demure, and then drafted Mona D (Alex Nocolaou) as keyboardist and vocalist. That was 2016. Now here we are today, a few albums deep and faced with their latest offering. An Object in Motion takes bold strides in many directions, from the beautiful, natural ambient of 'Cape Perpetua' to goth-shoegaze worthy of Gary Numan himself, 'Vanity', the EP moves away from typical readings of genres like dark wave and takes us on a journey to a place defined by synthesised ethereality.

Review: Casino Times is a London-based project of producers Joseph Spencer & Nicholas Church; a partnership that is rooted in house & techno since 2010. The duo have released on labels like Wolf Music, Mireia and their own Casino Edits. This one's courtesy of Swdens Omena imprint, the new label run by Tooli of Local Talk fame. A Change In Motion Part 2 sees the pair enter a new phase sonically, experimenting with the more experimental side of the spectrum. There's some punchy and futuristic electro to be heard on 'Ultra Synthetic' and 'Unfold', as well as sublime downbeat offerings like 'Tides' and 'Run Mods' and some swung-off kilter beats offered up on 'Something Else' (feat DUANE).

Review: Norm Talley's Upstairs Asylum label only arrived in 2021 but is already up there with the great Motor City imprints. The boss has been busy putting together a trio of new EPs for the first half of 2023 that showcases a wealth of Mid-West talent. House hero Boo Williams kicks off this one with his typically tight drum programming and party-starting synth work on 'Tickin Clock.' Eric Johnson keeps it raw, deep and loopy on 'Melodic Gruv' then Reggie Dokes brings his signature Atlanta house sound to 'Mother's Child' with its melancholic lead sax and 'End of Time' is a broken beat bliss out.

Review: Drab Majesty's latest EP 'An Object In Motion' is a deep mix of blackgaze and goth psychedelia, consisting of just four tracks flirting with a mystical, guitar-driven spirit. Don't let the number of tracks deceive; the project clocks in at just under half an hour, in large part thanks to the long-form number 'Yield To Force', which pits strange distant alarm sounds against graveyard-shifting fingerstyle guitars, in what amounts to a night-drive around old town suited well to any atmospheric surrealist crime flick. Only your first and last tracks use vocals, and when they do, the combination of deeply high-and-low-end registers are great complements for the artists' lyrical musings on misery and wonderment.

Review: Contemporary LA cold-punks Drab Majesty bring together coldwave and and shoegaze for their latest EP, An Object In Motion. The four tracks therein are examples of those styles' most atmospheric and ethereal facets, showing off the distinctive vocals and guitarwork of the project's mastermind, Deb DeMure, the androgynous alter ego of one Andrew Clinco. A swirling, emotive fusion, something between Slowdive (enlisting the help of Rachel Goswell one track) and Romo, emerges.

Review: Central Intelligence is back with more of his signature techno magic on Time To Panic. The old school pixelated artwork hints at the vibe inside with throwback techno and some retro melodies opening up on the mid tempo 'Virtual Visions'. 'Days Of Past' gets more busy with zippy synth flashing about the mix next to spoken word samples and heavy kicks. 'Fuck All' amps things up further with serrated leads and flashy pads all conveying a sense of urgent intergalactic space travel and the flip side jams 'Panic' - which recalls the Blade Runner soundtrack, and 'In Motion', and elastic cosmic bumper, round out in style.

Review: Max Skiba and Snax deliver a captivating journey through disco and nu-disco sounds with 'Pushing My Buttons' EP on Skylax France. Side-1 starts with 'Pushing My Buttons,' exuding a tribal mood with proto-house influences and a dramatic disco aura. 'In Motion' follows with a great vocal performance, blending disco, soul, and emotional elements into a laid-back yet uplifting message. On Side-2, 'In Motion' receives a refreshing remix by Maltitz Balearic Acid House, focusing on the melody while infusing techy moments and a captivating bassline, complemented by an added acid line. 'Pushing My Buttons' then gets a vibrant reimagining by Apollon Telefax, delivering a high-energy, hi-NRG version with both vocal and instrumental remixes. With its range of remixes and tracks, this release offers something for every mood and occasion, making it a standout addition to any disco enthusiast's collection.

Review: The Tropical Disco crew continue to show an utter disregard for the season by serving up more of their seamy and summer grooves. The super strong Various Artists collection kicks off with the funky bass riffs of 'In Motion' from Phazed Groove, who ride the riffs and fluttering flute lines to the cosmos and back again. Ziggy Phunk gets more raw and punchy with a freewheeling disco house cut that will shake your booty loose and on the backside are two more timeless tracks: 'Funky Tranky' has lush trumpets reaching for the skies and 'Calabao' brings a real Latin vibe and flailing percussive energy.

Review: Pale Jay's latest album, Bewilderment, is once again picked apart for this new single package on Karma Chief. It features two cuts from a record which again showcased his ability to craft rich sonic tapestries that are a mix of pure bliss and deep introspection. If you haven't heard it, you should, and you will want to after hearing these two singles. The A-side is a slow disco gem for extroverts and the flip has a lovely falsetto vocal over some nice and dusty rhythms. It's got pulsing bass but laid back groove and is a perfect soul sound for those who like to dream.

Review: Monchan and D Briggs are two US house producers whose involvement in the New York scene has seen to many a dazzling EP release lately. Their latest for Dailysession here is a dizzying yet loose affair, with its four tracks inspired by every sound from space disco to trance to nu-jazz. Impressive textures immerse tracks like 'Eagle Eyes' in grit, while edits from Monchan and visitor Prince Klassen revisit the formerly released 'Midnight Luv Bee' and 'Ibiza' respectively. Both make for convincingly retro, night driving disco and pop versions of two very well known songs - we'll leave the guesswork to you.

Review: There is not much more to say about Chicago's Gemini apart from the fact that he was a true house legend who, until recently, remained largely in the deep underground of the city's music, and has inspired a new generation of producers. Sadly, although he's still kicking about somewhere in the States, the man doesn't make music anymore. However, it's difficult to say whether he could have done much more these days, given how futuristic and cutting-edge his music-making was back then, and how fresh and it still sounds today. For these reasons, Germany's Chiwax have reissued a number of his EP's by now, and Shadowlust is the latest in the series. Much like the previous instalments, these four cuts are classic Gemini delivering the pure house magic - from "Log In" to "Motion", the beats are swinging, the chords heavy and pads climactic. If you've copped the other recent reissues then this is a must, if you haven't even heard of Gemini then please do yourself a favour..!

Review: French electro innovator DynArec is on a rampant run at the moment, with new releases popping up nigh-on everywhere right now. It makes sense to see him link up with Cultivated Electronics, one of the most on-point electro labels in action right now. 'Stop & Stall' opens proceedings with a limber and lithe romp through pinging, shuddering leads and hard as nails drum thumps. 'First In Motion' has a 4/4 strut which aligns it more with Italo, although the synths are far from retro endeavours. 'Specialized In Anything' is a sinewy workout which nods to the early 00s electroclash era and 'Lowest Perceived Legitimacy' slips into something sleeker, making for a varied and highly effective dispatch of machine funk from a singular voice.

Review: Bielefeld's RR brings some distinctly American house stylings to his second solo EP on the fine and fledgling Feuilleton label. There are also elements of classic house and plenty of jazz melodies here as he makes tried and tested grooves sound aged and dusty in all the right ways. 'Slow Motion' is all loose limbed and suggestive, with thinking chords and tumbling drums coercing you to the floor. 'In The Meantime' is glitching machine funk with blurts of synths and splashy cymbals, and 'My Joy' then gets the head up and facing to the stars. After the surprise and spritely electro of 'Fringe Food' comes a downbeat masterclass in 'Unity Drums.'

Review: The Meld label continues to establish itself and its sound in the murky minimal and tech house undergrowth with another fresh EP. This platter comes from Londoner Kawaii San who kicked the year with a fine outing on Magic Carpet and now builds on that with four more aqueous and innovative grooves. 'Poetry In Motion' is a thumping cut in the mould of the early Eddie Richards sound. 'More & More' has a dubber low end a little more room for trippy details and zippy synth motifs. 'Aqualand' is a smooth and serene cosmic viber and then proving he has real range, San's final cut 'Tape Display' rides on a nice broken beat.
