Review: This Record Store Day 2023 exclusive Carole King album, The Legendary Demos, pulls together 13 demo recordings of hers from between 1962 and 1971 on nice milky clear vinyl. It was first put out over a decade ago in 2012 and remains a cult favourite amongst fans who appreciate the realness and the rawness of the recordings as well as hearing the slightly different takes on a number of well known songs of hers. The pop rock queen includes the likes of 'Crying in the Rain' from early 1962 right up to several 1971 tunes from her hit album that year, Tapestry. A must have for fans old and new.

Review: Future Music 9/10: "What we have here is two CDs of loveliness, one relaxed and one more up-tempo. The whole package is enjoyable from start to finish." This deceptively simple titled album conceals a devilishly complex and ambitious musical construction as you would expect from the mind of the man Yokota. An absolutely unique trawl through the Lo back catalogue which manages to span much of its expansive breadth to create a dizzying aural collage that delights and intrigues. Mixed in Yokota's unique free-flowing style and featuring exclusive tracks by Yokota and others, this is an album sure to find favour with Yokota and Lo fans alike. The first CD features mainly vocal tracks while the second CD is a very different beast, focusing more on Lo's up-tempo electronic output.

Bobby Marin - "Cisco Kid"
Review: A unique snapshot of 60s New York: decorated compiler Dean Rudland has spent four years exploring the Latin boogaloo movement of the city where echoes of soul, deep funk and rock n' roll were heard via cover versions and homages by bands such as Los Africanos, Machito, Richie & The PS 54 Schoolyard. Much of the output leads back to the legendary Bobby Marin - a golden resource for DJ Premier samples - who worked just as hard behind the scenes as he did with his own Latin Blues Band. Loaded with a rich, physical party sound, it's the rough and raw counter to the smoother, larger productions released by Fania at the time. Highlights include the crazed synth jams on "It's A Feeling", Machito & His Orchestra's emphatic covers of Sam & Dave's "Hold On" and Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood". Complete with detailed liner notes, this really is an exceptional, insightful project that's a joy from start to finish.

Review: Joey Negro's "Soul Of Disco" series has always been a great source of forgotten disco gems for those who like their dance music rich, stringy and soulful. This third two-disc selection from the Z Records boss is no different. For disco diggers, there's plenty to enjoy, be it the rich, horn-drenched instrumental grooves of Board Of Directors' "Hanging Tough", the raw, clavinet groove of Loi's "Body Contact" or the wobbly synth bass and perfect percussion of Phenomenal's "One Two Three". With a smattering of bonus re-edits from Joey Negro himself for those who like their grooves a bit more DJ-friendly, "The Soul Of Disco 3" is nigh on essential.

Turn It Out
You Got Me Open
Review: Some fun acid house from the Robsoul Recordings archives available for the first time digitally. Originally out back in 2004, School Of Acid sees veteran French producer Chris Carrier tee off against Robsoul boss Phil Weeks and Bay Area house music staple Hector Moralez under their Fries & Bridge nom' de plume The title track is an all bouncing, all jacking acid house house work out, with .Hector's 'This Is Acid' vocal refrains riding the 808 drum pattern and undulating acid lines as neat little scratch noises drop in the mix. 'Turn It Out' sees Fries & Bridge drop a loose kick drum pattern that gets overwhelmed by a pulsing sub bass before a scattergun of hats signal a further onslaught of bubbling acid synths. Finally, 'You Got Me Open' sees Carrier fly solo and a lot deeper, crafting a solid groove aided by neat vocal edits.

Press Conference & Awards Ceremony, Hawaiian Village Hotel (March 25th 1961)
Review: Back in 1961, before taking a break from live performance for eight years, Elvis Presley played one last gig - a benefit concert for the USS Arizona Memorial Fund at the Pearl Harbor naval base in Hawaii. It was a legendary gig, with Presley delivering an energetic, enthusiastic and memorable performance in front of a similarly over-excited audience. This CD presents the performance in full - complete with such classics as 'I Got a Woman', 'All Shook Up', 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Hound Dog', 'That's All Right' and 'Heartbreak Hotel', as well as plenty of on-stage chat - alongside a previously long-buried recording of a press conference given by "the King" following his arrival in Hawaii. A genuine must-have for Elvis fans!

Review: 1995 original repress with full colour picture sleeve and shrink wrapped! This is the 2nd album from DITC charter member Show & AG and it's slightly darker than their debut album Runaway Slaves. Probably the best known track here is "Next Level" which was exceptionally remixed by DJ Premier. At the time of this release in 95 East Coast rap was pretty much drenched in the 'Gansta' identification of hip hop. Although "Goodfellas" is no hard core hip hop it isn't all swing jack either. This album still was able to maintain the East Coast stamp of approval to the crowds and be part of the current sound.

Review: Afterdark: Los Angeles is the 9th volume in Afterdark series. These compilations spotlight the grown-up sound of house music emanating from the world's most cosmopolitan cities and are designed for sophisticated music buyers who value credible music in a high-quality package. Following recent excursions to Europe and Canada, the Afterdark series comes back home to America. For this edition the city is Los Angeles, a place where music, movies, fashion and art all collide against a backdrop of perpetual sunshine. Handling mixing duties are two of Los Angles' finest DJs and Producers. From the southern outskirts of LA comes Jamie Thinnes and his Seasons Recordings imprint. Founded in 1996, Seasons has become synonymous with quality house music, releasing albums and singles from the likes of SUMO, Franck Roger, Fred Everything and The Rurals. On the second disc, the Groove Junkies takes us on a trip from the past, to the present to the future with classic tracks and unreleased gems.

Review: Five years after their inaugural Motown compendium, UMC jump aboard the RSD Express with a sophomore set comprising 19 stone cold soul gems. While it features a number of evergreen classics ("Machine Gun" anyone?) there's a strong theme of less obvious tracks from some of Motown's myriad legends. Highlights splashed across these delicious yellow 12s include Kendricks' glock-busting "Keep On Trucking", Stevie's yearning, driving 1967 b-side "Every Time I See You I Go Wild", Puzzle's immense jazz dream-piece "Haiku" and a whole load more.

Review: In the wake of the Chicago revival, this compilation was surely a long time coming. Before his Green Velvet identity was so well known, Curtis Alan Jones was more concerned with the bump and grind of his Cajmere alias and the Cajual imprint that carried classics by himself, Dajae, Glenn Underground and many more. Of course this compilation just touches on a few key moments (after all they couldn't miss out "Percolator" could they?) but there are no shortage of classics in this package. Just head for "Feelin' Kinda High" if you need more proof that this is an essential purchase for house heads everwhere.

Review: To mark what would have been Desmond Dekker's 80th birthday, Trojan Records is serving up a variety of celebratory releases. The King of Ska takes us back to the formative years of the Jamaican superstar's career between 1963-67, when he was an aspiring young singer signed to producer Leslie Kong's Beverley's Records imprint. Loosely chronologically arranged, disc one begins with Dekker's celebrated debut single, 'Honour Your Mother & Father', and continues to chart his efforts in the first couple of years of his career - both alongside unnamed studio bands and with the backing of The Cherry Pies and The Four Aces. On CD2, we hear a more confident Dekker belting out the singles that would turn him into an international star, including rude boy anthem - and his first UK top 50 smash - '007'.

Review: "Disco Juice" is a handpicked collection of tracks that came out of Peter Brown and Patrick Adams' Harlem based P&P label. This Counterpoint release is compiled by DJ/record dealer, Nick The Record, who has one of the best 12" single collection in the world, and owns most of the P&P catalogue. This compilation makes the point that disco was very much a street level thing. Many of it's greatest moments came out on independent labels, and were geared primarily towards a marginalised audience. This is a world away from the anaemic generic disco fodder that poured out in the wake of "Saturday Night Fever".

Review: For his third album, Sky Islands, Jacques Renault decided to create an action-packed set inspired by the classic DJ megamixes that were once a huge part of dance music radio in his home city of New York. It's a simple idea, but one he's executed beautifully. It plays as a continuous mix on each side of this vinyl version, with the Let's Play House co-founder using at as an opportunity to flit between short tracks that variously touch on quick cuts built around rescued disco breaks, heady loop-house, sweaty percussion workouts, proto house, Bobby Konders style deep house and sleazy, basement-ready club jams. It's very dusty and sample-heavy, but that's kind of the point: this is an excitable, energetic concoction that's more about the finished product than the short and sweet individual tracks.

Review: Originally released way back in 1974, Hugo Montenegro's Hugo In Wonder-land album has long been seen as a quirky and colourful delight. Original copies are hard to find these days, and with good reason. The set, which has finally been given the reissue treatment in honour of Record Store Day 2020, sees the American bandleader and Latin-fired easy listening specialist offer-up eccentric cover versions of tracks from the Stevie Wonder songbook. It includes some terrifically cheery and colourful covers, including a surprisingly synth-laden take on 'Living in the City', a low-slung, Blaxploitation influenced re-imagining of 'Superstition', and a suitably intergalactic, other-worldly version of 'Higher Ground' that sports more deep space Moog sounds than your average obscure library music set.

Review: When disco started to fade in the late seventies and early '80s, subtle - and not-so subtle - mutations started emerging from New York studios. According to the compilers behind this essential collection, Spring Records and its Posse offshoot were at the forefront of this movement, a movement that effectively paved the way for NYC's later garage and house sounds. While this version of history can be debated, there's no doubting the quality of the boogie, electrofunk, freestyle, proto-house and early US garage cuts included on the collection. It includes a wealth of must-have cuts, with highlights including Fonda Rae's celebratory 'Live It Up', C-Brand's boogie killer 'Wired For Games' and Feel's electrofunk slayer 'Got To Have Your Lovin'.

Review: Revolution Records has always been one of reggae's most intriguing labels, in part because it was not based in Kingston, Jamaica, but rather a recording studio in South London. The imprint was the work of Dave Hadfield and John Harper, and between 1968 and 1970 released a wealth of British-made rocksteady and reggae that stands up to this day. Aside from showcasing over 40 tracks from the label's catalogue - painstakingly restored from records and tapes - "Unusual Reggae" also comes with a fine 28-page booklet that tells the story of the previously mysterious label in vivid detail. A must-have for reggae fans of all ages.

Review: Snoop Dogg will always be a legend for so many different reasons - his hip-hop, his devotion to smoking weed, and now his unlikely friendship with Martha Stewart on US TV. Coolaid was the fourteenth studio album by the American rapper from back in 2016. He produced the bulk of it with help from Just Blaze, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland. Guests in the mix include Jeremih, E-40 and October London, among others, while the sounds mix up his trademark Wes Coast Cali sound with more contemporary takes on gangsta rap.

Review: The music industry is full of unsung heroes. We tried to recognise that during the pandemic, when #wemakeevents trended and even the general public was talking about how much roadies get paid and what lighting technicians might do until concerts return. Songwriters are another example of professionals that don't always get their dues. Aaron Schroeder is one of them.

Well, OK, admittedly, anyone who penned five number one hits for Elvis Presley, and a further 12 classic tracks on The King's behalf, probably did pretty well out of it. And die hard fans, cultural critics and those who bother to read credits will be familiar with his name. Nevertheless, it's rare for the writers to form the focal point of a compilation album, which is the case here: a record packed with largely alternative takes on classic songs recorded between 1956 and 1962, created by Schroeder, perfected by Presley

Review: To celebrate 20 years of BBE, the label has asked Keb Darge to gather together his personal highlights from the Legendary Deep Funk series he's been compiling since 1997. Naturally, his dusty-fingered selections - which can be heard in full on disc two - are undeniably spot-on, meaning that there's little in the way of filler or fluff. In fact, highlights appear at a rapid rate, from the James Brown style grunt of Ricky Calloway and Latin-influenced cheeriness of Sandi and Matues, to the anthem-like heaviness of Zebra's "Simple Song". These dancefloor hits are put into context on disc one, where turntablist extraordinaire Mr Thing cuts, scratches and juggles his way through Darge's superb selections.

Review: The now firmly established beat-institution, Stones Throw, is simply never out of ideas. The latest ace up their sleeve comes in the form of a much-needed vinyl reissue of US artist Ras G's Raw Fruit series, a compilation of funky-as-hell, sample-laden tracks which have only previously been out on cassette and digital formats. Teaming up with Leaving Records, the original home of the series, they have compiled both volumes into one hell of double vinyl release. Imagine J Dilla after a heavy night on the town and you're not even close to what this guy's capable of. Tracks like "GMO Hoes" and "Hyksos Invaders" are as nutty as they are seductive, combining the more rigid formats of jazz fusion together with electronic improvisation and deranged looping. This is one of our favourite Stones Throw dug-outs in a while and comes warmly recommended.

Review: Like deep funk? Then you'd surely know of the legendary Keb Darge: the Scottish DJ who invented the term. Known as a leading authority on funk and soul music of the 1960s and beyond, he went from modest beginnings in Wigan, before moving to London in the '70s, bringing the sounds of Northern Soul to punters in the capital. Namely His 'Legendary Deep Funk' night at Soho's seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo's. Following up his last compilation put together with Paul Weller; 2009's Lost & Found (Real R'N'B & Soul) LP, Darge presents hits from the 'Deep Funk' series to celebrate BBE's 20th year. Diggers will most certainly appreciate appearances on here such as Soul Drifter's "Funky Brother", Kenny Dope's edit of Family Of Eve's much sampled "I Wanna Be Loved By You", Joe Washington's "Blueberry Hill" and the classic "Love Call" by Ramsay and Company amongst many others.

Review: Second time around for Saint Etienne's 2012 album "Words and Music by Saint Etienne", a typically breezy, summery and ear-pleasing affair in which Bob Stanley, Pete Wiggs and Sarah Cracknell delivered a suitably glossy, up-beat take on synth-pop that arguably owes more to the Pet Shop Boys and their own early works than some of their more celebrated albums. Highlights are plentiful, from sunny opener "I've Got Your Music" and the string-laden swell of "The Last Days of Disco", to the largely acapella "Record Doctor", baggy and Balearic "Twenty Five Years" and the attractively jangling "Haunted Jukebox". Pop perfection tailor made for sunny days and lazy afternoons: don't sleep!

Review: Long-serving music journalist and author David Hepworth knows a thing or two about the music of the 1970s - most of his excellent books in some way touch on the often 'misunderstood' decade - so it makes perfect sense that Edel have asked him to put that knowledge to good use. Packaged in a hardback book containing unsurprisingly authoritative liner notes, Deep '70s offers four CDs packed with lesser-known, infrequently celebrated musical nuggets covering rhythm and blues, glam, blue-eyed soul, jazz-rock, ARO, folk-soul, gospel, big band jazz and much more besides. There are naturally a few familiar names present -Hall & Oates, Joan Armatrading, Boz Scaggs, ZZ Top, Fairport Convention, Robert Palmer etc - but Hepworth neatly sidesteps the obvious, choosing instead deep cuts from their catalogues.
