Review: Since the early 90s, Ministry of Sound's yearly Annual compilations have done an excellent job in chronicling crossover dance hits, mainstream dancefloor killers, and popular underground workouts that make their way into the wider public consciousness. This year's edition (confusingly dated 2024, despite being released in late 2023) continues the successful franchise via two unmixed discs of radio-friendly dance favourites. It naturally ticks all of the usual boxes, contrasting breakout big room hits by underground heroes (Young Marco, Adelphi Music Factory, Ewan McVicar) and sizable tracks from established dance heavyweights (Chemical Brothers, Sub Focus and Dimensions, Rudimental, MK), with gigantic EDM works (Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding) and the odd out and out dance-pop hit (Kylie Minogue).

Review: Alton Ellis is known as the Godfather of Rocksteady and has put out several key albums such as Mr Soul Of Jamaica from 1967. The genre innovator has the smoothest of smooth voices and shows that again on Sings Rock & Soul, which is actually heavy on the soul and light on the rock. This limited edition reissue on Studio 1 sounds superb and all of the 12 tracks are gorgeous things with unhurried reggae rhythms and his soaring vocals backed by sympathetic guitar riffs and neat chords.

The record won the United Nations's Time For Peace award for outstanding artistic achievement and for "contributing to world peace." It features standout tunes like 'People Get Ready' and 'Brotherly Love' composed by Curtis Mayfield, as well as a guest spot from Pharoah Sanders on tenor-saxophone on the title song 'Timepeace' and seven other wondrous tunes that showcase soul, jazz, folk influences. Review: Two years on from the release of her acclaimed mixtape-style full length debut, What We Draw, Kathy Yaeji Lee returns to XL Recordings with her debut studio album With a Hammer. Conceived (lyrically at least) as an examination of the singer-songwriter-producer's relationship with anger, the album sees Lee expand on her house/hyper-pop-influenced trademark sound via nods to trip-hop, rock, drum & bass and more, with the addition of - for the first time in her career - live instrumentation. Of course, amongst the musical tweaks and collaborations (Lorraine James, Nourished By Time, K Wata and Enganet all feature), there are still plenty of nods to her pop-leaning productions of old, not least bi-lingual vocals (she often sings in Korean as well as English) and a sense of sonic style that has always been one of the aural hallmarks of Lee's work.

Review: Jah Thomas's Shoulder Move dropped in 1983 and was one of some 200-plus released the veteran Jamaican producer and Midnight Rock label was involved with in a career that spanned from 1978 to the present day. He worked with legends like King Tubby, The Roots Radic Band, Scientist and plenty more but head up this one alone. His deadpan vocal style is rhythmic and compelling as he rides the stripped-back dub rhythms below through the nine superb cuts on this newly reissued record. It's pure reggae and it really hits the spot.

UK Garage
Can't Stop (4:42)

Wildcat (5:09)
Review: The Vivid label is yet another one from Burnski who also runs Constant Blanc and Instinct. He is s single handed garage hit making machine and he knows how to tap into the next gen, too. Here he calls upon Peaky Beats for a naughty and nasty three track affair that has retro feels but contemporary style. 'Can't Stop' opens up with a 2-step shuffle and steely hits, then 'Get Ready' gets more free and melodic with some boxing little melodic patterns and oscillating bass. Last of all is the most menacing and dark - 'Wildcat' flips into a dub wise swagger mid-way through that is going to blow up the clubs.

Review: American singer Eva Cassidy released Nighbird posthumously in November 2015. It came 19 years after her death and was recorded at the Washington club Plus Alley in 1996. Some of the tunes had already been released as part of a live album the same year but for this album the recordings have been remixed and remastered from the original tape. It has some big jazz standards such as 'It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)' and 'Fever' as well as eight tunes that were previously unheard at the time. An exceptional record from one of the best female jazz singers of all-time.

Review: While lots has been written about the influence of Black American soul and R&B artists on Britain's most successful (white) bands of the 1960s, little focus has previously fallen on the music of black Britons - and others from elsewhere in the Commonwealth who called the UK home - during the same period. Gotta Get A Good Thing, which tells the story of black music in Britain in the "swinging sixties", is therefore long overdue. Musically, it skips through soul, rhythm & blues, ska, rocksteady and more besides, offering up tracks from both well-known names and overlooked artists. Throw in extensive liner notes - including an introductory essay from Fitzroy Facey of the Soul Survivors - and you have a genuinely essential compilation.

Review: A standout score for a standout animation, Sierra the visual treat offers an insight into creator Sander Joorn's childhood: a father's obsession with rally driving turning his child into a car tire. A surreal idea many can get on board with given the predisposition of parents to pressure youngsters into rekindling their failed dreams, Estonian producer Misha Panfilov's sonic accompaniment is just as original.

If you're familiar with the artist's aural palette then the contents here will not come as much of a surprise, albeit this is still wholly original stuff. There's a playfulness that makes you think the genius in question would likely be a laugh riot to meet at the bar, with audible depth meaning the live show that follows will transports you to another dimension. Here, moments of bouncing, childlike electronica meet grander ambient classical, with the occasional 1960s elevator pastiche thrown in for good measure.

Review: Cleveland Francis, the stalwart of US black folk, coined the term "soulfolk" to describe his uniquely bleak style of acoustic music. Growing up and coming to prominence in the state of Virginia, he rarely missed an opportunity to play at every college campus, coffee shop, bar and odd corner he could find. Now some of his earliest and most important recordings get compiled into this double 21-track anthology, 'Beyond The Willow Tree', which, like no other, does wonders in chronicling the experience of black segregated youth in the 60s and 70s.

Review: Motown might well be up there as one of the greatest labels of all time - although maybe Blue Note would have something to say about that - and so a collection of its most classic cuts is always going to be worth hearing. The famous and original music factory was a real production line in the 60s, turning out hit after hit that reigned soul and pop for a new generation. All the most iconic gems are here by the lies of Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & The Miracle, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and Billy Preston & Syreeta amongst many more.

Review: DJ Junk is ironically named because all of the joints on this new 12" disco edit label are superb. Each one adds a house feel to some classic tunes from days gone by. 'Right In The Socket' kicks off with leggy drums and slapping hits next to jumbled toms and congas. It's a real cosmic crowd pleaser. 'Ready Get Down' then ups the ante with some taught and tight drum kicks overlaid with noodling guitar funk and big vocals. On the flipside, things get deeper with 'What I Got Is What You Need' which is a soul drenched stomper with heartfelt feel coos and last of all comes the more spaced out and spacious 'If You Want Me' which builds in teasing layers of well-filtered funk.

Review: In 1971, in the midst of America's conflict in Vietnam, the US army held a 'battle of the bands' contest and showcased the two winning bands in a promotional album. East Of Underground, the gritty runner-up, managed to capture the spirit of America with their sweet-soul covers of Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield and Funkadelic. The quality of the recording is superior, as is the musicianship: the falsetto harmonies, the gritty guitar, and the devouring drums...

Review: No one makes house music as steamy and rapturous as Floorplan aka Detroit's Robert Hood and his daughter Lyric. And there are few better labels for it than Classic, who now serve up this superb three tracker. 'Get My Mansion Ready' is family in structure - chunky but simple drums with a sermon-style vocal over the top and warm organ chords. 'Out Of Control' gets a little more loose with clattering hits broken bass loops, but still a church-like vocal. To finish off, Hood serves up a dub of 'Get My Mansion Ready' that has more turbocharged chords and even more uplifting energy.

Review: Live in Detroit was a 1970 show by American psych and blues rock band the Doors, recorded at the Cobo Arena in May of that year during the same time when they were recording their last studio album, LA Woman. It was one of the longest ever live gigs the band played and amongst the 25 tunes they offered up, there were eight big blues standards including 'Back Door Man', Junior Parker's 'Mystery Train' and 'Crossroads' by Robert Johnson. Because the gig played so late, it got the band banned from the Como Arena. The album was mixed and mastered by long-time Doors' sound engineer Bruce Botnick.

Get Ready (Ben Liebrand Classic Groove) (6:36)
Review: The SOS band is one of disco's most loved outfits. They always bring plenty of funk and soul to their work and have a signature sound that is feel good and sultry. This time their latest comeback single 'Just Get Ready' gets a fresh lick from legendary remixer Ben Liebrand. His opening funk groove version is all glossy vocals, rich chords and nice fat bass riffs. Michael Grey then offers an even brighter, more optimistic version before Liebrand then closes out with a Classic Groove. It's slowed right down, has brilliantly old school 80s production and a killer b-line.

Review: From the late nineties onwards, the Tito Lopez Combo has been serving up their fresh take on funk across six albums and a bunch of EPs. Now they serve up a brand new and red hot 7" for Swiss label Burning Sole. 'Get Ready Everybody' features Mel Superbad Day and has hard horn, taught guitars and fluttering flutes bringing the soul way up top over the tight rhythm section. Flip it over and you will get the more loose limbed groove of 'Do Your Funky Strut' with its suggestive horns and elastic bass lines.

Review: Earlier this year, Defected offshoot Glitterbox Recordings delivered its first documentary, Where Love Lives, a loving tribute to the power of "dancefloor expression and liberation" which was filmed over 18 months in Paris, Ibiza, New York and London. This expansive three-disc set showcases cuts from the film's soundtrack, with Defected boss Simon Dunmore and Glitterbox A&R chief Seamus Haji acting as curators. The 52-track set is little less than a whirlwind tour of revivalist disco, nu-disco and modern boogie, with reworks of classic cuts sitting side by side with celebrated contemporary cuts and future classics - all rippling with a mixture of squelchy basslines, electrofunk synths, sweeping disco orchestration, crunchy cowbells, fluid piano solos and heady, life-affirming vocals. If you dig disco, you'll definitely dig this.

It was a gig a year after they had their big break thorough, which had marked them out as the only English acid jazz band who could play tight, kicking tunes without slipping into bland lift music. Shibuya 357 is the only live capture of this vital era, with all the big tunes played including 'Never Stop', 'Dream Come True', 'Stay This Way' and 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head'. Add in some extra funky fun and you have a real classic on your hands that has preciously only been available in Japan.

Review: Jimmy Edgar has been an ever present talent over the last decade. The Detroit artist has a range of styles in his arsenal and explores many of them on the s new album on Innovative Leisure, which is where his J-E-T-S project with Machine Drum also found a home. Recorded over the past few years in multiple cities including Atlanta, Detroit, and, of course, L.A., Cheetah Blend draws on the sounds of those cities as well as his love of rap and is packed with fresh perspective and magical sound design. West Coast boogie, glitchy beats, experimental pop, it all features and it all bangs.

Review: There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album. Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. The included hardback book is brilliant, too, and packed with first-hand accounts of the creation of a now iconic LP.

Review: Is DMX one of the rest rappers to ever do it? Many think so. His lyrics are as vital as his delivery and now for the first ever time the legendary Def Jam label and Ume have put together some of the Yonkers icon's most poignant hits and hardest bars. There is eventing here from his tongue in cheek party anthems like 'Party Up' to introspective and personal tales of love, loss, and life, such as 'Slippin.' This definitive double 12" collection is a must for fans, and a fine overview for anyone who needs convincing that this rap dog is up there with the very best of them.

Review: Red Dwarf star turned soap actor and longtime BBC Radio 6 Music funk master Craig Charles has put together a first volume of classics for your delectation. On a double vinyl collection that spans 20 tracks he traverse every conceivable style from the earliest days of the genre right up to today. The cuts remain pleasingly underground and carefully dug out rather than veering into obvious filler territory and there are up-tempo cuts with more deep and pained offerings. It also includes two 'Trunk Of Funk Edits' that are 100% exclusive to this compilation and not available anywhere else.

They've pull together various unnamed artists to pay tribute to Bob Marley in various weird and wonderful ways - hymnal remakes with electric Rhodes chords and big rock riffs, live sounding cover versions and various other reworkings of the reggae legend's biggest tunes from "Get Up Stand Up" to "I Shot The Sheriff" to "Is This Love?". The music sounds modern, crisp and fresh, and certainly puts a different spin on these tried and tested classics.

Review: Revolution Records has always been one of reggae's most intriguing labels, in part because it was not based in Kingston, Jamaica, but rather a recording studio in South London. The imprint was the work of Dave Hadfield and John Harper, and between 1968 and 1970 released a wealth of British-made rocksteady and reggae that stands up to this day. Aside from showcasing over 40 tracks from the label's catalogue - painstakingly restored from records and tapes - "Unusual Reggae" also comes with a fine 28-page booklet that tells the story of the previously mysterious label in vivid detail. A must-have for reggae fans of all ages.

Review: Renowned studio wizard Prince Fatty finally follows 2015's "The Clone Theory" album with a second studio long player jam packed with heavy dubs and top notch guests. "In The Viper's Shadow" is a real hotlist of dub kingpins with the likes of Tippa Irie, George Dekker, Earl 16 and Horseman all contributing to a melting pot of sounds that spans multiple eras and influences. Many of these tracks have been popular during Prince Fatty's live shows over the last couple of years, from the soul infused cover of the Temptations' "Get Ready" to the sun kissed and lumpy drums and endless reverb of "Everything Crash". Timeless stuff.

He serves up a killer modern revision of a certain Air Power classic on "Taking It Back" powered by his tough drums and allowing some nifty filter sweeps to harness the energy of the loops. There's also a sexy boogie down vibe that's straight outta the '80s on "Get Down" and some smoky emotive deep house for loves on "Downtown" closing out another top release by this rising star.

Review: Fred Peterkin has decided that his latest full-length excursion should be credited to Captain P, an occasional alter ego first introduced on 2010 debut album The Incredible Adventures of Captain P. Musically, Escapism includes nods to many of his previously explored influences - slick Detroit hip-hop, Motor City techno, luscioius Chicago deep house, and so on - as well as audio musings on the effects of the Internet-driven news agenda (the superb, collage style cut-up "Social Media") and the nature of art itself ("21 Century Artist", a superb chunk of rubbery, soulful techno). For all the variety, it's the dancefloor-ready cuts that really sparkle, with the dreamy "Escapism", soul-flecked "All I Want To Say" and "These Times"- a brilliant hook-up with Lady Blaktronika - standing out.

Raw, upbeat and charged by turbo harmonies, highlights include the sweet soul of "Keep Moving", the sprightly organ hits and driving beat of "Love Is The Answer", the resounding thumps and fervent choir calls of "Don't Let Your Heart Be Trouble" and the hazy midday heat blues of "Anyway". Say yes!

Review: Two years after Congo Natty announced the jungle revolution on Big Dada, he's back with yet another paradigm shifting selection. Effectively this is a remix album but the artists have been hand-picked to ensure the same consistency and complete finish as the original. Dub maestros old and new lay down some serious twists; Sukh Knight fires up "Get Ready" with bellowing synths, Jinx In Dub adds an obese bulbous digidub version of "Nu Beginningz" while the hugely influential UK pioneer Adrian Sherwood unleashes his inner ragamuffin with the skank-happy junglist "UK Allstars In Dub" shakedown. Another smooth and explorative session, the revolution will be dubwised.

Review: In 2013 Nicole Wray's Lady project shook speakers, massaged dancefloors and melted hearts the world over with its authentic soul and surging sentiments. Two years later, Truth & Soul re-amp the power with this collection of instrumentals; from the life-affirming, northern soul stomps, horns and strings of "Hold On" to the epic bluesy swoons of "Karma" to the big band motifs of "Please Don't Do It Again", this collection of instrumentals is a showcase of the attention to detail that went into the entire album's production. Seductive.

Review: Williamsburg-based Truth & Soul Records is fast becoming one of the most reliable sources of modern soul and revivalist deep funk. Should you be unfamiliar with their output - and you should be, given that they set up shop in 2003 - this double LP trawl through the label's bulging back catalogue should be an essential purchase. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the Cuban and Caribbean influenced instrumental brilliance of Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band's "Pimp", and the stripped-back deep soul of Beau Williams' "I'll Be Home Soon", to the raw, Hammond-heavy 60s jazz-funk of The Fabulous 3's "Night Bird" and fuzzy analogue afro-funk of Zafari's "King Masuru".

Review: London's Horse Meat Disco club really has beaten all comers in the -disco stakes: if a decade of packed parties, international DJ gigs and bringing the disco sleaze to Rinse FM isn't enough, they now deliver their fourth(!) compilation for Strut Records. James Hillard, Jim Stanton, Luke Howard and Severino all share the selection of a 16-strong tracklist, which also appears in mixed form too. Highlights include the quirky Chaka Khan-esque "Ain't No Way" by Opal, the sumptuous luxury vibes of "Stop" by Valery Allington and the legendary low-slung bass-fest "Barah" by Cleavage. Full marks again, how do they do it?!

Review: Romanian powerhouse All Inn returns to its intermittent Limited series for another pair of anonymous edits that pile the hooks on with a deft touch to create a fiery atmosphere in the context of the stripped down house scene the label operates in. Billed as a tribute to Eva Cassidy and Curtis Mayfield, "People Get Ready" takes a deadly piano loop and works the respective vocals with the skill required to make an edit stand on its own two feet. The dub mix on the flip homes in on the melodic loops for a more heads-down end result, but whichever side you pick the results are likely to be rapturous in the kind of parties that last for two days or more.

Studio 9 (Just Like That)
Review: Manchester's XXXY has been causing quite a stir in bass circles over the last couple of years. Now based in London his move towards the housier end of things appears to continue with this newie on Rinse. Deep and melodic, "Got Me So", conjures up melancholic warehouse parties of the late 80s, but updated with a big swirly breakdown and pitched up vocals. "Get Ready" is campy and retro and before you know it you're dancing on a pedestal with RuPaul at Sound Factory circa 1993, but "Studio 9" is the most badass track on here, with seriously attitude-heavy, jukey drums, laser stabs and hypnotic vocals. Awesome.

Review: There's a mad story behind this 70s funk covers album... East Of Underground were a group of disillusioned GI's waiting to return from Vietnam. Knowing this gives the set a real sense of gravitas. But even if you didn't know that, the covers are a captivating listen, laced with raw unpolished musicianship and emotive harmonies. Highlights include the faltering highs of their version of Carole King and the dusty, crackly grooves of Rare Earth but it's all worth checking. And indeed owning.

Review: It's hard to imagine what minimal techno artists like Gary Beck and Spain's Paco Osuna are doing on a Defected compilation. However, Beck's contributions display none of his usual white knuckle fury, and the rolling grooves of "Hands in Mine" and "Get Down" are full of seductive vocals and filters. The same can be said of Osuna's collaboration with Daniel Sanchez, a deep, summery groove propelled by a sexy filter. There are darker moments on this compilation, like Riva Starr's own bleepy, analogue version of Cajmere's "Percolator", but in the main, it focuses on the style favoured by Osuna, Beck and the ivory tinkling, jazzy nuanced tracks from Guti & Dubshape, Santos and Deniz Kurtel.

Review: The Get Darker crew are back with their second instalment of This Is Dubstep. Featuring 40 of the biggest tracks and artists on the scene, this is the most comprehensive collection of dark dubs out there.

This Is Dubstep Vol 1 has gone on to become the biggest selling dubstep compilation of its kind, prompting Get Darker to follow up with a sequel whilst the iron is hot. This time though, they take the series to the next level by showcasing more angles of the dubstep scene. Throughout the 40 tracks, the compilation journeys through a multitude of moods, tempos and influence whilst maintaining a healthy balance between rave tracks and songs more geared towards listening at home. It is an all encompassing snapshot of the scene, showcasing the artists at its forefront and its biggest anthems including upfront tracks, unreleased gems and classic anthems.

We see ragga influence on Caspa & The Others' remix of Breakage, delicate bass structures on Skream's "Memories Of 3rd Base" and the slower dubs of Benga's "Eye Tunes." Benny Page & Zero G deliver psychedelic bass twists, we get some tribal action from Ruckspin & Planas, some rolling future bass from Hatcha and even some blissed out, spacey dubstep courtesy of Ironika. The true rave smashes come from the likes of Chase & Status, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Sub Focus, Nero and Caspa.

Featuring all the most important names and touching on all the sounds that are making the biggest waves in the scene at the minute, this compilation is like an audio time capsule of dubstep in 2010. Get stuck into this double CD package to become part of it now.

Review: Showing off the dearth of electro talent that French label Boxon has uncovered has become an annual event. Last year's compilation, Boxon Makes Me Happy, showed off 2008's best in show and now they're back to show off their most recent discoveries with Boxon Makes Me Crazy. It's a global effort, with artists from around the world released on the label, and a lot of different styles to boot.

Bryan Shower's Intro kicks things off nicely with some heavy riffing distorted keyboards, similar to Daft Punk's Aerodynamic, and a break into what could well be a violin solo (heavily distorted too of course). Bernard Blade's Dogs Anthem again breaks out the distortion box to provide some fun and furious electro goodness. Andre Conde's From Jupiter To The Moon is a real highlight, complete with a kick ass 80's-styled vocal and oodles of sequenced slap bass bouncing up all over the track.

Elsewhere, the space-age sounds on Elomak's Biometric is well worth a listen, as well as the incredible walls of sound on The Louder Lads'

Full Throttle. United Chemical's Fidget Paradize is exactly that - a treat for fans of wobbly synths set against a tough 125bpm beat that features some huge chunky build-up's. Hungry Sam's Get Paper meanwhile has more of an indie club feel, courtesy of vocals by Punkin, while Breaking News' Get Ready For This is probably the most unexpected thing on the whole compilation - a cover of Dutch Europop gods 2 Unlimited! There are some really great electro nuggets on here though
- thank heavens Boxon have done the leg work and sought them out yet again.
