Review: In cahoots with the annual (not to mention excellent) Liverpool Disco Festival, celebrated editor and remixer Rahaan has been let loose on the West End Records catalogue. Happily, his new versions are rightfully respectful to the chosen disco and boogie classics with the Chicagoan simply adding choice effects here and there as well as some cranky old drum machine beats and occasional synthesizer flourishes. This is particularly evident on his raw but deep and slightly dubby take on Brenda Taylor's "You Can Have You Cake It Too", but also comes to the fore on the standout remix of Mahogany's spacey boogie jam "Ride on The Rhythm". String-laden disco bliss is provided via a bass-heavy re-arrangement of the Chuck Davis Orchestra's "Spirit of Sunshine", while Rahaan's Billy Nicholls rub is a high-octane, shirts-off treat.

Review: Mitch Wellings is the founder of Space Tours Records and The Sound Kitchen studios and he's been impressing us with his 12"s for a while so we're glad to hear an album from him. This new conceptual release says it was "created to honour the brave passengers on the first ever Space Tours flight." It's a cosmic trip made using "real interview footage" and has some very lovely artwork to help heighten the illusion. The music itself is futurities and melodic tech with wispy electro rhythms and celestial chord sequences. It's an expansive mind movie, a deeply immersive and escapist soundtrack that makes great use of the long-player format while also offering up plenty of great moments for the dance floor. A real triumph.

Review: Following a couple of low-key EPs and mini-albums on tiny independent labels, Cousin Kula's debut full-length has been snapped up by Rhythm Section International. It was a shrewd move by boss man Bradley Zero, because Double Dinners is undeniably lovely. Lusciously executed and pleasingly laidback, it sees the Bristol band effortlessly join the dots between horizontal, soft-focus jazz-rock, shuffling downtempo grooves and dewy-eyed soul. It's a far more warming, comforting and meditative affair that some of their more raucous and upbeat output, something that band puts down to composing it during lockdown, when meditative music was a necessity. Even as society begins to open up, it still feels essential - a sign of the album's timeless class.

Review: Desmond Dekker recorded some of his best known songs together with his backing group the Aces. Their single '007 (Shanty Town)' made him Jamaican music's first outernational superstar, reaching the 14th place in the UK charts. The Leslie Kong-produced Double Dekker was first issued in 1973 and consists of the best material Desmond recorded during his early years. In 1969 he scored a number-one hit with the legendary song Israelites. You'll hear how the Ska music from the mid-60s developed to the Rocksteady sound. This was 'Ska' or 'Blue Beat' - (or its new name for the slower tempo rocksteady) - and the lyrics come from the Calypso-Mento method of telling about current events in music. He was really at his prime from 1969 to 1971 and recorded classics such as 'It Mek' (1969) and 'You Can Get It If You Really Want' (1970), which you'll both find on this record. Even before Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff Jamaica already had their own international superstar, Desmond Dekker was his name.

Review: Under The Bridge was a compilation of work by artists who had, at some point or another, recorded on the cult imprint Sarah Records. It should already be on your radar. If not, we recommend digging for it. Now here's part two, a 2024 update which takes that idea much further, presenting a more expansive track list and platforming some brand new projects to boot. Timeless stuff comes thick and, quite often, pretty fast, with plenty of driving garage rock to feel propelled by. Old favourites are here, for example Even As We Speak and Secret Shine, Action Painting! and The Hit Parade. And there are also new groups, such as Michael Hiscock of The Field Mice leading an act called Gentle Spring, and a collaboration between Mark Tranmer and James Hackett, both usually of The Orchids (who also appear on here), but recording as Vetchinsky Settings. As such, Deerhoof's 19th long player should be a cause for celebration and praise even before we dive into the incredibly high standards they're once again setting. Appreciation shown, let's get to the nitty gritty of the Miracle Level, an eccentric, unpredictable, and resolutely non-conformist record which - by those definitions - is everything Deerhoof are about.

Breaking from their English-speaking past, Satomi Matsuzaki's Japanese vocals only add to the playful atmosphere coursing through the very veins of this effort, naive and innocent, either contrasting the cacophonies and crashes of the most furious moments, or accentuating the calm and delicate movements. Review: In some ways (well, at least one way), The Artwoods epitomise what's wrong with popular music, and pre-empted how malignant their problem would become, eventually spreading to every other group that can't churn out new Best Ofs and guarantee huge sales. As a band, the 1960s rhythm & blues outfit were a big draw on the gig circuit, ranking alongside the likes of The Animals in terms of shifting tickets. On the other hand, surprisingly weak numbers for albums and singles tells a very different story, one all-too-familiar in the 2020s. Given this was back then, though, when flogging records was the holy grail, it proved to be quite the undoing, with the guys only managing to convince labels to back a clutch of singles, LPs only coming retro-retrospectively. I Take It All kind of proves how wrong people were, with tracks that stand up to the best of the era.

The focus of these albums was the 60s psychedelic explosion, when every town was teeming with kids in garages experimenting with music (and, er, possibly the odd refreshment or two). Volume two of the series is just as seminal as volume one, as we get treated to some seriously heady gear from helices of The Lovin' Spoonful and The Sonics amongst many other lesser-spotted gems.

Review: Emeralds really are the gift that keeps on giving. And giving. tTe Cleveland, Ohio-trio have around 40 releases out, which landed in rapid succession over a period of about four years. Many are self-facilitated CDs and cassettes, nodding to a 'record everything' mentality that keeps them front of mind, and invites listeners into their development, wrong turns and staggering successes. Within that insanely long oeuvre, formal releases bookend mini eras, each showcasing a slightly refined, retuned and rethought sound. Does It Look Like I'm Here? is no different, offering the most beautiful and crystalline music this outfit has made to date. Up against the epic-dominated preceding outings, where ten minute tunes abound, things are more 'standard album format here', with a couple of exceptions. But the tracks are not bound by uniformity or rules of this or that, and instead feel just as expansive.
