The standouts of this EP were always 'U' and 'Set It Out'. Review: Desmond Dekker recorded some of his best known songs together with his backing group the Aces. Their single '007 (Shanty Town)' made him Jamaican music's first outernational superstar, reaching the 14th place in the UK charts. The Leslie Kong-produced Double Dekker was first issued in 1973 and consists of the best material Desmond recorded during his early years. In 1969 he scored a number-one hit with the legendary song Israelites. You'll hear how the Ska music from the mid-60s developed to the Rocksteady sound. This was 'Ska' or 'Blue Beat' - (or its new name for the slower tempo rocksteady) - and the lyrics come from the Calypso-Mento method of telling about current events in music. He was really at his prime from 1969 to 1971 and recorded classics such as 'It Mek' (1969) and 'You Can Get It If You Really Want' (1970), which you'll both find on this record. Even before Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff Jamaica already had their own international superstar, Desmond Dekker was his name.

If not, we recommend digging for it. Now here's part two, a 2024 update which takes that idea much further, presenting a more expansive track list and platforming some brand new projects to boot. Timeless stuff comes thick and, quite often, pretty fast, with plenty of driving garage rock to feel propelled by. Old favourites are here, for example Even As We Speak and Secret Shine, Action Painting! and The Hit Parade. Review: Skep Wax's first Under The Bridge compilation, released in 2022, reunited the bands, songwriters and producers who populated cult early '90s indie label Sarah Records. This hotly anticipated follow-up repeats the trick, presenting 20 recently recorded cuts from the Bristol-based imprint's original roster of artists. Review: In some ways (well, at least one way), The Artwoods epitomise what's wrong with popular music, and pre-empted how malignant their problem would become, eventually spreading to every other group that can't churn out new Best Ofs and guarantee huge sales. As a band, the 1960s rhythm & blues outfit were a big draw on the gig circuit, ranking alongside the likes of The Animals in terms of shifting tickets. On the other hand, surprisingly weak numbers for albums and singles tells a very different story, one all-too-familiar in the 2020s. Given this was back then, though, when flogging records was the holy grail, it proved to be quite the undoing, with the guys only managing to convince labels to back a clutch of singles, LPs only coming retro-retrospectively. I Take It All kind of proves how wrong people were, with tracks that stand up to the best of the era.

Review: Given how prolific he was earlier in his career, the relative silence of Dizzee Rascal of late has been surprising to say the least - though nobody would begrudge him a break from the music industry treadmill. By the sounds of Don't Take It Personal, officially his eighth album, the four-year break has done him good. He's in prime lyrical form through, skipping between mutations of the grime blueprint he helped draw up and the kind of dancefloor-focused fare that he's periodically served up since the success of 'Bonkers' all those years ago. It's a smart move, meaning that hook-ups with fellow grime stars JME, D Double E, P Road and BackRoad Gee sit side by side with UK garage and bassline-leaning club workouts such as 'How Did I Get So Calm', 'Sugar & Spice' and 'What You Know About That'.

Review: SNTS and Sacred Court are staunch fixtures of the German hard techno circuit, and this reputation is more than topped up on this latest addition to the repertoire, 'Everything In Distance'. Taking on a vampiric theme, titles like 'I Absorb You', 'Biting My Skin' and 'Double Heart' land like clawed blows to the neck, confounding with their unrelenting kick thrums and surrounding industrial atmospheres, gothic and miasmic as they come. More texture than usual is heard on this record than most pummelling-techno artisans abide, with the four-by-four kick drive almost sounding to have completely gotten lost in the fog by the time we reach track three.
