In some fashion, be it production or oversight, Studio One founder Clement "Coxsone" Dodd was surely behind these gems and curios, most of which carry the enduring weight and force of history into the present era. Twelve sweet classics play out across the album's two yellow sides, cycling through the vocal and instrumental incantations of Alton Ellis, The Saints, Jennifer Lara, and Marcia Griffiths, and all are mixed with heavy, yet sweetly raw, frequency balance. Review: Devin Townsend was always going to have his work cut out with whatever came along next. 2019's Empath was a striking record for many reasons, but none as vivid or inescapable as the sheer scope of the thing. Capable of painting many images with broad-yet-specialised genre brush strokes, to say Lightwork had monumental expectations foist upon it while still at the conception stage is putting it mildly.
Finally, then, the difficult follow up has arrived. And, reassuringly, this is no disappointment. Yes, to an extent it lacks the scale and vision that went into its predecessor. Nevertheless, it's classic Townsend stuff, delivering dynamic metal with elements of industrial by the track-load, rarely pausing for breath among the fury, grit, and impassioned emotions. More evidence to back up the artist's legendary status.

Review: Imagination was both an obscure German jazz-rock band from Dusseldorf who recorded a series of rather good records in the late 1970s as well as being a fine UK electrofunk act. Review: Straight from that mythical realm of private press records comes Rick Mason & Rare Feelings, one of those half-hidden near misses that attain holy grail status with second hand prices to match. Sometimes the hype and rarity outweigh the music contained within, but that's absolutely not the case here as Mason leads his band into an especially cosmic, adventurous kind of funk which tips over into jazzy territory more than a little. The production has a raw charm to it, and that doesn't stop the record from lifting into the stratosphere on a swirl of jammed-out instrumentation that by rights should have landed Mason more fame than he seemingly received when he originally released the album in 1977.

Review: Translated into English, The Novice is a 1975 Italian movie about a young chap returning to his provincial hometown to visit his dying uncle, who is being cared for by a night nurse who also happens to be a novice nun, played by the remarkably beautiful and seductive Gloria Guida. An erotic comedy, you can guess where the plot goes, but the casting of Lionel Stander as ageing relative is interesting.
The US actor was memorialised in Eric Bentley's play Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been after his famously uncooperative testimony before the House of Un-American Activities, responsible for exposing communists in the early days of the Cold War. Subsequently blacklisted from TV, film, and radio in his homeland, he eventually moved to Europe, first setting up shop in London, where he would make flicks for decades, often pretty obscure ones. This is one, and the music is wonderfully kitsch, Wurlitzer-packed elevator stuff, so if that's your bag so is this.

Review: Formerly known as Non-Human Persons, NNHMN (or Non-Human) are a duo from Berlin who sound every bit like stereotypes of synth-twiddling tag teams from the German capital. Which is no disrespect, more to celebrate how long the city has been known for embracing noises plucked straight from the future, and then combining those with mechanical hyper-emotion. Androids or not, on Deception Island Part 1 NNHMN show off deft skills at creating strangely sensual and sexual soundscapes from plugged-in things, offering up five stand out tunes that straddle club scenes and twisted romances, or obsessions, each perfectly poised to move bodies while also enveloping us in mysterious atmospheres thick enough to drown in. Review: Originally released in 1994, Biosphere's second album Patashnik, as we would later find out, was only the beginning. Geir Jenssen's Biosphere project has since become a name that rolls off the tongue alongside Brian Eno when talk of ambient comes to the table, and the use of vocals in tracks like "Phantasm" and "Startoucher" are as memory jogging as Marshall Jefferson's "Mushrooms". The music here provides a snapshot of Biosphere's sound before he committed a decade's worth of albums to UK label Touch. For a '90s take on things, you could day "SETI Project" has aged better than "Mestigoth", while the nebulous to deep classical tones and bluey-hues of productions like "Decryption", "Patashnik" and "Mir" remain timeless.

Review: If you didn't catch The Summer of Soul on the big screen then we're really, truly, very sorry indeed. The documentary was one of the most fascinating and evocative, not to mention poignant box office releases of the immediate post-pandemic lockdown period, and in our opinion is up there with the best non-fiction flicks we've ever seen.
Centring on the Harlem Cultural Festival, which took place over successive weekends in 1969, it tells the story of how this Black-run, and predominantly Black-billed event welcomed hundreds of thousands and hosted groundbreaking performances, but was quickly forgotten and lost in the shadows of the much more mythologised and predominantly white Woodstock, which took place at the same time. The long-overdue reappraisal is a musical feast, with great archive footage of numerous greats, and asks serious questions about who owns and decides on which narratives survive, while this album offers a fantastic overview of the sounds and names involved.
