Review: Black Box are thoroughly rinsing dubstep to find some of the most exciting producers out there at the moment. It's impressive. What's more impressive still is that they can switch from intricate, deeply emotive artists like Author to people like Gantz here, who plays it cool, calm and razor sharp. Crisp and methodical with only a hint of tape hiss mixed in with his hard echoing beats, Gantz clearly comes from the school of "less is more". It works a treat. Thelem's remix adds percussive layers to create his own distinct stamp but the effect is the same - deep dubstep like this needs space to work in. When it's worked as well as this, the effect is stunning.

Review: Industrial noise jazz of the highest order comes reissued by Black Editions, who cast their sights back on the late 1960s, a lesser-known golden era for unbounded experimentation in the genre. Japanese stalwart and bandleading visionary Masayuki Takayanagi was at this time in the twilight years of his life, but that hardly stopped him from scouring new musical frontiers; he formed New Direction as a means to freely upend jazz, in a way that mirrored the rapid societal changes of post-occupation Japan. Review: Ariel Kalma is a musical outsider, a visionary who combined a diverse world of sound into his own unique signature. Jazz, weird ethnic instrumentals, warm electronics, folk, spoken word and avant soul all feature in his compelling oeuvre and the visionary French musician sure had a large one. French Archives Vol III: 1964-1989 is another superb collection of material from it that comes in a lovely four LP box set with booklet and download code. It gets from astral wonderment on 'Space Pillars' to layers of harmonic bells, tropical flutes, harmoniums and drones of light on 'Muse Mirroir' with plenty in between.

Review: Steely Dan's fourth studio album 'Katy Lied' was their 1975 standout moment, capturing a moment in time when the band had gained plenty of traction, and had already ridden the wave of fame for a good time. As a result, their music had grown in creativity and grandeur, expanding outwards from a mere prog rock outfit into a studio project, necessitating a steady stream of session musicians, highest-fidelity gear and lots of money. As ever, infectious guitar hooks and R&B funk structures make up most tracks here, making this an early party rock album if we've ever heard one. Katy may be a love interest or a sumptuous muse - but the title also alludes to a katydid, a species of insect related to grasshoppers or crickets.

Review: Experimental noise rock outfit Shizuka was formed as the gothic sonic outlet of one Shizuka Miura in 1993. Known for making ghostly dolls to aid her performances, Shizuka's heyday was one of mesmerizing eerieness, with her 1994 'Heavenly Persona' being the emblem of that outlook. With haunting rock instrumentation and screeching meditations on materiality's tension with the incorporeal, this is a distinctly creepy album for those unafraid to (at least temporarily) cross over to the other side.

Review: Jim Jupp and Julian House's Ghost Box imprint has been a favourite of ours since their first releases all the way back in 2004. The English label has been at the forefront of the 'outsider' game since way before the term was even coined, and aside from releasing a mountain of interesting soundtrack sounds from all over, they've had some regulars over the years that have helped the label maintain its charisma and singularity. Among these are Pye Corner Audio, Roj, The Focus Group, Mount Vernon Arts Lab, and many others. In A Moment: Ghost Box is a stunning - and handsomely packaged - retrospective collection of some of the label's best work to date. If you're into long, trippy excursions into synths and field recordings, then this is for you. If you're already a fan of the label then it's an absolute must.

Review: Ghost Box has always been a label that's hard to pin down, despite their self-styled "hauntalogical" approach to experimental music. This essential 10th anniversary compilation, comprising 31 back catalogue highlights over two discs, reinforces this opinion. While often creepy, unsettling and unusual, their releases cannot simply be described as "ambient" or "electronica". Contrast, for example, the jaunty, kitsch grooves of Belbury Poly's "Farmer's Angle", with the folksy, slightly pagan "Hey Let Loose Your Love" by The Focus Group, or for that matter the gasp-inducing ambient beauty of Pye Corner Audio's ambient treat "Deep End", and the string-laden, modern classical-meets-horror oddness of Mount Vernon Arts Lab's "The Black Drop". These are merely four of the disparate highlights on a superb, and typically varied anniversary set.
