Review: Ariel Zetina does something irrevocably fucked up to techno on 'Cyclorama', their debut album. This is what happens to techno when it dares to venture into the Green World from A Midsummer Night's Dream; nine medleys through blossoming kicks-and-breaks-centrism render it a psychotic-flowery vision of the dancefloor, exploring dastardly sounds few artists have dared explore before. Zetina describes the LP as inspired by the cyclorama - cylindrical (or semi-cylindrical) images used in threate shows to provide the audience with a 360-degree sense of setting. Soft and adventurous, 'Chasers' and 'Smoke Machine' are our highlights.
Review: Having already caused a stir with their various solo releases, old friends Klein Zage (real name Sage Redman) and Joey G (Joe Gillick) have decided to join forces on an EP inspired by their time living together in South London. While the EP is musically varied, there's a sonic coherence to the three original tracks thanks to the presence of Redman's spoken word vocals throughout. We're particularly enjoying the deep, emotive beauty of 'A Little Dissonance', though punchy, shuffling and spacey opener 'Folks Not Guys' pushes it close. Over on the flip we're treated to a trio of remixes: Ariel Zetina's intense, trippy and high-tempo take on 'Folks Not Guys', Local Artist's warming and rolling, Rhodes-sporting 'Disco Dub' of the same track, and DJ Python's pleasingly weird, mind-mangling version of 'A Little Dissonance'.
Review: Following two tasty 12" singles from Joe Gillick's Yasha project, the Orphan label delivers a quietly impressive debut single from previously unheard artist Klein Zage. The producer's original tracks reside on the A, with the slipped, sub-heavy 21st century synth-pop of "Womanhood" being followed by the rumbling two-step garage-pop of "Absolutely" and the weighty 8-bit house hustle of "She's Out There". On the flip the very same cuts are given the remix treatment. DJ Python's version of "Womanhood" sits somewhere between spacey ambient pop and smacked-out dancehall, while the Local Artist Cult re-make of "She's Out There" re-imagines the track as a rolling dub-house treat. If that's not enough to set the pulse racing, Ariel Zetina's version of "Absolutely" is a thrusting ghetto-house slammer rich in mind-altering wobble bass.
